SAVANNA — The Savanna City Council heard a lengthy presentation from Paul Kraemer of Kraemer North America, the contractor responsible for the construction of the new Savanna-Sabula Bridge, who presented an overview of the project, as well as a request to use portions of city property and Marquette Park in order to facilitate the smooth operations of the project. Kraemer proposed to use this property for a lay-down yard and also for barge access. It would allow the company to construct a 20 to 40 foot wide temporary aggregate haul road to construct and access Pier

11; their plans are to install a dock wall in the area in early 2016 and this would remain in place until May of 2018, with their field office and parking to be located on the north half of the Park District property. The company would need city permission to construct and access Pier 11 along the bank of river owned by the city. The impact of this project on citizens’ access to the park would mean no through traffic in the northern section of the park for this period. Kraemer assured the council that all areas would be put back the way they found it once the project was complete. He assured everyone that there would be no complete closures of traffic during the period,

24 meeting with an eye toward the Park District’s decision and other issues. “We want to be as transparent as you are,” Karemer said, urging the council to make the agreement a “working agreement.” The council also passed a resolution urging Governor Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly to release all “nongeneral fund revenues owed to local governments.” These monies would include revenues from the Motor Fuel Tax, Wireless Service Emergency Fund, Use Tax, Local Government Video gaming Distributive Fund and casino gaming. McCombie reported that a bill requiring the release of these funds has passed the House but not the Senate, and that the Senate would not meet again until January. As of September, the mayor said the state owes the city about $60,000.

VILLA PARK — Velma Grace Amling died Nov. 10, 2015 following breast cancer and later MDS. Velma was born June 13, 1936 in Chicago. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Melrose in faith at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mount Carrol. Velma graduated from Lanark High School in the class of 1954. Her undergraduate degree was from Valparaiso University’s College of Education in 1958. Velma earned a Master of Science degree in business administration from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1964. The First National Bank of Lanark was her with balancing of accounts, later a cashier, then loan a board member. Velma Robert Morris, Attorney at Law, in Lanark. Her early teaching career started in the Crete-Monee School District Crete. Followed by thirty plus years with the Glenbard School District, teaching business classes at Glenbard East in Lombard. LANARK — If you love to sing, but are only interested in dedicating a little bit of your time and talent, then the Northern Illinois Christmas Singers may be just what you are looking for. The Northern Illinois Christmas Singers will be performing their Christmas Cantata entitled “Hope for a Broken World” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Both performances will be at Lanark Church of the Brethren on the corner of Pearl and High Streets in Lanark. The holiday choir is comprised of nearly 30 talented people of all ages from the northern Illinois area. Its director is Stacy Kalina of Lanark, and they only perform once a year for the Christmas holidays. Kalina said she has always loved music, being involved in music throughout her formative years at church and school functions. She was an All-State singer in high school, majored in music at Northern Illinois University, and has directed choirs at the Rockford United Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church in Genoa, and the Pearl City Lutheran Church. “Wherever I lived, I directed a church choir! I love it,” Kalina said. Kalina said the group started several years ago as the Carroll County Singers,
with members from Mount Carroll, Chadwick, Lanark, and Shannon. She directed a community choir in Mount Carroll, but they wanted to do more performances than just at Thanksgiving. So they added a Christmas Cantata. Its membership eventually expanded to Carroll County, and now, northern Illinois. “This year, we have new members from the area, and we’re growing,” said Kalina. “That’s how we’ve grown. People come to a concert, and want to become a part of it.” Kalina said the group offers the perfect opportunity for someone who has the talent, but not the time, to sing with a formal group. “We always start pracafter Labor Day, and continue for the next 12 weeks up to the performance. If you are interested in just a little bit of music, feel free to join us next year. Or come to the concert and see for yourself if it’s something you are interested in,” said Kalina. The unique duet of Mount Carroll’s Dana Tautz on dulcimer and Selena Markley of Lanark on harp will also perform. “It’s just beautiful, and it’s a sound that you won’t hear anywhere else,” said Kalina. “We hope you will join us for an uplifting concert, sure to put you in the Christmas spirit,” said Kalina. Hello, from beautiful, sunny Thomson, Illinois! As I write this column, I am distracted by one of the items on The Heirloom Café’s menu this month - tater tot casserole. Of all the amazing meals Grandma Linda serves up, this one brings back many memories more than ever, and like Pavlov’s dogs, I begin to salivate as soon as I think about Linda’s delicious tater tot casserole. Growing up in a large family, many casseroles were served up at dinnertime. The older kids always went for the crunchy top of the dish first, so I usually ended up with a plateful of mush. But, as I got older, I got more and more of the top crust, with golden brown whole tater tots and cheese, and soon this dish was at the top of my list. As I went out on my own, this casserole was one of the first dinners I learned to make, and I was very good at it. My neighbors always seemed to stop by for a visit on tater tot casserole day. Now days, when I make tater tot casserole, even the older kids find their way to the house, some of them driving quite a ways just to belly up to the table in time for dinner. They know Thursday night is tater tot night, and they rarely miss. Grandma Linda’s version of tater tot casserole is almost the same as mine, but she has a few years of experience on me, and it shows. I don’t know if you have been to the Heirloom Café lately, but the food is amazing and the menu changes with the seasons, filled with a combination of
tried and true recipes that are a tradition in farm homes everywhere, and new heart healthy, cutting edge recipes that you only find in the big cities. My favorites are goulash, spaghetti, sloppy Joes, and chicken alfredo, all with home baked toast on the side. My wife goes for meals like white veggie lasagna, Greek chicken salad wraps, and Grandma Linda’s taco casserole. Whether you love home cooked farm meals or bistro style recipes, it’s all here at the Heirloom Café! The Heirloom Market has new hours this winter, open until 6pm, with free coffee and cider from 4-6 pm, just in time for all you holiday shoppers. Eastland earns third state title Cougars capture championship in final match for seven seniors, veteran coach By TY REYNOLDS Sauk Valley Media treynolds@saukvalley.com
NORMAL – Coming into Saturday’s Class 1A state championship volleyball match, the Eastland Cougars hadn’t lost a set in the entire postseason, and had only lost one set to a 1A school all season long. They still haven’t. In the dominant fashion that the Cougars made look commonplace, they dispatched Cissna Park 25-16, 25-16 at Redbird Arena for the program’s third state champititles in 2008 and 2009. “You always hear about dreams coming true,” said senior hitter Cassidy Logemann, breaking into tears of joy at the postgame press conference, “but this dream actually did come true.” “It’s just crazy,” added an equally speechless Sydney Guentner, another senior. “Just crazy.” When this group of seniors wrote down their plans to win a state championship way back in seventh grade, there’s no way they could have known it would be in such dominating fashion. Eastland lost one set all season to a fellow 1A school. They lost just once all year, to 3A sets; it was one of only six threeset matches the Cougars played. They also tied 3A Kaneland at their own tournament to end the season, and beat three 3A schools and a 2A team to boot. The 40-1-1 record goes down as the best in program history, top-

This time, the run came with Game 1 tied 14-14. A Guentner kill and an ace by Bubby Doubler made it 16-14, then after a hitting error, Makenzie Fink slammed back-to-back kills for an 18-15 lead. At 18-16, Fink had another kill for a sideout, then senior Bailey DeMichele stepped to the service line. Like in Friday’s semiproceeded to anchor the setending 7-0 spurt, with an ace mixed in with two kills by Logemann and a block from junior setter Ashley Beyers. The Cougars carried that momentum over into Game 2, as kills by Logemann and Fink and a Cissna Park hitting error gave Eastland a quick 3-0 lead. But 12-9 was as close as the Timberwolves (33-61) would get the rest of the way, and kills by Logemann and Fink and a block by Guentner quickly turned that three-point lead into a six-point edge. “They have a lot of weapons, and we knew that coming in – but I really thought we could match up with them,” Cissna Park coach Josh Landon said. “We talked about it being a boxing match; they’re going to get their swings in, and we’re going to get ours. I thought, ‘Oh here it is, 14-14, we’re going to hang right with them and this is the way it’s supposed to be.’ “And then they were able to crack off six or seven points and take that controlled the tempo of the match from there. Any time that you’re back on your heels a little bit and have a lot of out-of-system balls, you’re going to be at a disadvantage – and Eastland took every bit of advantage of that.” And when a block by Karalicia Kennedy, an ace by Kennedy, and another kill by Logemann made it 24-16, Eastland could taste the title. One final hitting error by Cissna Park set off a celebration with tears of joy and players jumping into each other’s arms. “At Point 24, I think could really do this,” said Doubler, who led the backrow defense with 13 digs. “We knew that it was ours, and we couldn’t wait to scream and celebrate.” “I looked at Bubby and thought, ‘We can really do this,’ and I could tell she was thinking the same

But in true teammate fashion, it was a pair of juniors who felt the achievement was even more special since they got to share it with the older girls. “This is just unreal,” Beyers said, “and I can’t put into words what it means to execute our plans and

The convention experience ended with a keynote address from Amberley Snyder, a barrel racer and roper that was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident. “Her speech motivated us to never to give up and to always accomplish what we set our minds to. It was neat to see such a strong woman accomplish so much even after experiencing an accident as bad as hers,” said Feltmeyer. “All of the members had a fantastic time and learned a lot about leadership and accomplishing goals.”

Eastland hosts Agronomy CDE and Grain Fair LANARK — The Eastland FFA hosted the Section 1 Agronomy Career Development Events and Grain Fair on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at Eastland High School, placing 5th in the contest. Zoe Strohecker placed 7th overall. Members of the agronomy team included Strohecker, Liz Kloepping, Austin Miller, Hannah Woessner, Ben Woessner, Justin Kalina, Andrew Stengel and Payton Erbsen. Cindy Feltmeyer, Eastland agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, said during the CDE contest the students had to judge six classes of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, corn silage and hay for quality. They also had to identify 25 crop seeds, 25 weeds and 10 insects.

Along with hosting the agronomy contest, Eastland also hosted the Section 1 Grain Fair. Feltmeyer said students from around the section brought in grain samples from projects they are keeping for their SAEs to be judged. Members of the Eastland FFA who participated were Connor Erbsen, Payton Erbsen, Cole

here has been talk about the new county plat book. We will be carrying the plat book that Jeremy Hughes, with the Carroll County GIS/Zoning Department, has been working on. Knowing that the correct information is right at his book the most up to date. The book will be released before Christmas. It is going to be a combination of a plat book and an atlas. This means it will include city maps as well as the plats for the country. The book is in production now but will be available for Christmas — I know how this will be a great Christmas gift for each farmer! The cost of the book will be $35. The Carroll County Farm Bureau will be holding its annual meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17 in the Farm Bureau Board room. FFA excels at Trap Shooting COLONA — The Eastland FFA Trap Shoot team aimed high, taking 1st place honors at the Fall Geneseo Trap Shooting Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Bi-State Sportsman’s Club in Colona. Cindy Feltmeyer, Eastland agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, said Jake Cline placed 2nd, and Austin Poffenberger took 3rd place. Teammates included Emily Denekas, Austin Miller and Connor Erbsen. Andrew Stengel and Collin Ruthe also competed as individuals. “Each squad had to shoot two rounds of 25 clay tions,” Feltmeyer said. “And
the team as they placed 2nd at the Section 1 trap shooting contests earlier this fall in Coleta.” Along with the trap team competing in Colona, Feltmeyer said the archery team also competed. The archery team consists of Karalicia Kennedy, Connor Erbsen and Austin Poffenberger. They shot 10, 3-D targets and four Olympic style targets from differing distances. “The Eastland FFA would like to thank the Coleta Sportsman’s Club, Clark Vanbuskirk, Smokin’ Gun Worx and the NRA for their support of the trap shooting and archery programs,” said Feltmeyer.

West Carroll FFA attend convention LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Ten West Carroll FFA members attended the 88th National FFA Convention held Oct. 28 to 31 in Louisville, Kentucky. The group, consisting of Riley Sullivan, McKenna Sullivan, Leslie Neis, Carson Moon, Shane Houzenga, Shae Williams, Emma Aljets, Ashton Wand, Dana Fee and Kennedy Rice, rode with other local FFA members from Amboy, Oregon, and AFC on a Wiersema charter bus. On Oct. 27, the West Carroll group traveled most of the day, but toured the Funk Family Farm and Gem and Mineral Museum in Shirley, near Bloomington. The York Township Library and the Thomson Sesquicentennial Committee have announced the Festival of Trees contest to be held as one of the Sesquicentennial events closing the “Year to Remember” in Thomson. LANARK — At Eastland Jr/Sr High School, cafeteria staff and students involved in the FCCLA and Student Council helped to decorate and serve the Veterans Breakfast on Nov. 11. All students in grades 7-12 participated in the 2015 Veterans Day Ceremony. Sergeant-Major Robert Kucinski and Ellis Boughton were the guest speakers in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Viet Nam War.
