Mount Carroll gets in the spirit during Pumpkin Fest by LYNNETTE FORTH for Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – Downtown Mount Carroll was colored with pumpkins during Saturday’s annual Pumpkin Fest. Organized by the Chamber of Commerce, the event offered a variety of family-friendly activities, including the Farmers Market, the pumpkin-decorating contest, and the Great PUPkin Mutt Strut pet costume contest. The old burning ground at the bottom of West Market Street was the site for the Pumpkin Sling Shot competition. Participants tested their strength and aim to see how far they could shoot pumpkins of various sizes with the three-person slingshot. Free hot dogs, chips and beverages will be provided to parade participants after the costume contest. There will be a free goodie bag for children. Trick-or-treating follows the parade; it ends at 8 p.m. Trunk-or-treating and games will be held until 8 p.m. at Mount Carroll Church of God. Lanark City Council approves renovation bid for police station By LYNNETTE FORTH for Prairie Advocate LANARK — The Lanark City Council approved a nearly $235,000 bid from Sjostrom and Sons Inc. to build the new Police Department garage at its meeting Oct. 21. The city plans to vacate 111 S. Boyd St. and build behind Lanark Municipal Building, 111 S. Broad St. “We received two bids, Diehl and Lott Construction in the amount of $267,823.26, and Sjostrom and Sons for $234,980,” Chief of Police Matt Magill said. “The project is designed to be set up in two phases, and will be started within the next 2 weeks.”
Project updates MSA Professional Services provided an update on the Blair Parkway project, including an amendment to the original contract that saved the city $2,300. “The on site time and material were less,” MSA’s Steve Haring said. John Nelson reported on a TIF application recommendation from Dave Kuhlemeier for the replacement of a new roof at his downtown tavern, Dave’s Place. The cheapest bid received was for $49,950, and the TIF committee recommended allowing 30 percent. The council approved a lump sum of $12,487, which is 25 percent.
City Attorney Ed Mitchell mentioned that at a council meeting 2 months ago, a discussion took place regarding the establishment of an ordinance to vacate alleys. Approval was granted for Ordinance 893, with notification to be placed in the Prairie Advocate. Alderman Weston Burkholder commented on the status of the wall weather proofing at 109 N. Broad St., noting that he has spoken with another contractor who recommends placing a sealer on the wall, which can be done by city workers. Burkholder will review the matter with the Streets and Properties committee. Alderman Ed Fehlhafer recommended spending $3,429 on a hot water pressure sprayer to be used by the maintenance department; the council approved the purchase. Mitchell also spoke regarding the MediaCom franchise agreement, noting, “I haven’t heard a thing from them.” Council members advised Mitchell not to pursue the issue any further. Clerk Jackie Hawbecker spoke on the renewal of the city’s health insurance, reporting that she had spoken with Rhett Coatney of Country Financial, and Mayor John Huggins, and the three recommended staying with the current policy, because open enrollment and Obamacare will cause havoc if they change.
Comments and committees The council OK’d raising Jason Rubble’s pay from $12.50 to $13.50, since he has obtained his CDL driver’s license, as requested by the city. Rubble had requested $15 an hour. Mitchell reported on the status of abandoned properties, noting that the Fox property tear down bids will be opened Nov. 18. Mitchell has discussed the Fogle taxes with State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier, and a petition will be filed with the Carroll County Courthouse by Mitchell. Fehlhafer spoke about a semi parked on Franklin Street that is left running for 1 to 1½ hours daily. “It gets annoying to the neighbors.” Huggins said he spoke with the USDA and Sharon Pepin of Community Funding and Planning Services on a couple of possible grants. One could allow funding for more warning signs in the city, possibly paying for 100 percent of the cost. Huggins urged aldermen to think about the idea. The mayor also he was approached by a member of the MAPPING committee about possibly putting up a skating rink on the empty lot. The committee would pay for the cost, but the city would have to review insurance matters. The next City Council meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Letters and Commentary Democrats care about you? It’s a myth
“Democrats care about you.” One look at Madiganistan (aka Illinois) should have killed this zombie tale years ago. Who are you going to believe, Democratic politicians who’ve ruled this state for most of my adult life, or your own lying eyes? You’ve seen jobs fleeing (Illinois has fewer jobs now than it had 20 years ago!), you’ve seen your disposable income dropping (Illinois families have seen income going down, even as taxes, prices, and more taxes, rise), and you’ve seen your kids leave the state just to more Democrat “care” I can take, but I know exactly how much I’m going to stand for - none! The tale of Harris v. Quinn is illustrative: Pam Harris is the mother of a special needs child, and chose to stay at home and care for her child. The SEIU Healthcare union represents Illinois home health care workers, and donated nearly $2 million dollars to Gov. Pat Quinn’s 2010 re-election campaign. Their money achieved the desired result; immediately after his election, Quinn issued an executive order that forced Pam Harris to pay union dues to SEIU, knowing her for his next campaign. If not for the U.S. Supreme Court, Pam Harris would still be just another victim of Democrat “care”. Vice President Thomas Marshall once said, “What this country needs is a good 5 cent cigar.” Well, 5 cents doesn’t buy what it used to; but we do have a governor who can be bought for a few hundred thousand in campaign contributions. What Illinois needs is a governor who’s so rich he’d laugh at such paltry sums, a man who can’t
be bought. What Illinois needs is a governor who knows why jobs are leaving our state. What Illinois needs is a governor who knows how to craft a real budget. What Illinois needs is a governor with a track record of success. What Illinois doesn’t need is more Democrat “care,” what we need is Bruce Rauner. In Illinois, one of our favorite complaints is “It’s run by Chicago.” Stephenson County alone has 37,000 eligible voters, but in the 2010 gubernatorial race, only 14,000 chose to vote; 22,000 eligible voters chose not to vote. Gov. Quinn was re-elected with a 19,000-vote margin. We could have been spared the failed policies of our Chicago governor by Stephenson County voters alone. If we stay home again, expect the same result. We also choose our U.S. House representative. Due to our gerrymandered district, staying home will allow our Chicago-backed representative to return to Washington. Perhaps the most important race in this election is the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Dick Durbin, a man who has embarrassed both our state and our nation for over 30 years. Help Carroll County retailers, vote no on the 1 percent sales tax
gas and fuel they buy and pay sales tax on most likely will offset any small real estate tax savings. Someday, Mike Madigan might just get sales taxes included on other farm inputs; he would love to get that done. It is hard enough for Carroll County retailers to be competitive as it is without adding 1 percent to their prices. A person can avoid the sales tax just by buying from a supplier in a lower sales tax county in Illinois. Some towns might take a total sales tax revenue hit if just a few large customers bought their fuel and LP from some other business established in a lower tax based county. The amount a person pays in sales taxes can be moved to another tax body, real estate taxes cannot. County taxpayers pay the majority of sales taxes. Tourism counts for less than 15 percent of all the sales tax revenue collected. Just think of the sales taxes paid on a set of tires, repairs to your car, gasoline, LP gas to heat your house, furniture, dog food, etc. Face it, you pay sales taxes on
more items than ones that are exempt. The projected amount of sales taxes to be collected are too high. One county school district dreams of huge sales tax revenues partly based one town. However, if you look up the state Supreme Court Hartney ruling, the days of having a remote for sales tax rebates are numbered. (http://www.revenue.state.il.us/ News/HartneyDecision.htm) You will never get a chance to remove the tax if the voters approve it. If we want to fund the schools with a sales tax, then it should be a statewide initiative with a mandated 1 for 1 reduction in property taxes. If the voters do not approve the tax increase, and if history gives us any guidance, most likely you will get a chance to vote on the issue again. Make a choice that can be changed later, vote against the 1 percent school facilities sales tax. Rod Fritz Lake Carroll
The 1 percent sales tax is an additional tax. There is no guarantee that passing this tax will lower your real estate taxes. One school district has offered to lower real estate taxes 1 year by a third of the sales tax that is collected. Even if the school board did not change its mind after the election, the offer is for 1 year, a new year or a new for all the additional money without reducing property taxes. Remember 14.4 million reasons, where did it all go? They spent it. Real estate taxes are a better source of revenue without hurting retailers. Think of a contractor based in Carroll County bidding jobs. He would need to charge another 1 percent in his bids when bidding based in another county where the tax has not been imposed. The following is a synopsis of the October meeting of the Chadwick-Milledgeville school board. MILLEDGEVILLE — After thanking Walter Donahue for his donation to the high school football program at the Oct. 20 meeting, the Chadwick-Milledgeville school board approved snow removal bids for this school year for Chadwick and Milledgeville schools. For Chadwick, Fairhaven Township will be paid $45 per occurrence to apply salt; $85 to plow. For Milledgeville, Troy Wagenknecht will be paid $70 per occurrence to apply salt, and $210 to plow, with no charge for return trips. The board then approved the PRESS Board Policy. Superintendent Tim Schurman noted that many minor changes were made to word-

Have you done your research, and by research I don’t mean listening to all the ads, but really diving in and seeing informed decision? Although it is hard to research those candidates who are not local, be sure to do your research on local issues. For instance, the 1 percent sales tax. I think in the past the reason it has been voted down continuously is
because, one, it is a tax, and two, there has been a lack of understanding of the tax. In a past column I announced our board came out in favor of the tax. It was not an easy decision, and one that received much discussion. The conclusion was, however, that yes, it is a tax, but it is also a way to spread the cost of school funding over a larger tax body. The County School Facility Occupation Tax will add a 1 percent tax to most items purchased. However, it will not add any tax to tangible personal property that is titled or registered (cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, etc.) and food that is to be consumed off the premises of where it is sold. In easier terms, it is not added to anything that is charged 1 percent food sales tax at the grocery store, but it is applied to soft drinks, alcohol and any food

Letters and Commentary Yes for school facilities tax The Carroll County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, after much discussion and deliberation, voted to support the 1 percent facilities sales tax. This proposed tax will be on the ballot next week. This 1 districts as they could use the funds collected for rehabilitation of our school facilities. While we understand most of us do not want another tax, some changes will have to be made in order for our schools to be able to update and maintain the buildings and infrastructure they have. Budgets and funding keep getting tighter and tighter. The facilities sales tax will allow everyone who spends money in the county to assist with funding instead of only those who own real estate. The sales tax does not apply to everything as it does not apply to any tangible personal property that is titled or registered with an agency of the state (cars, trucks, boats, etc) and it also does not apply to food that is for human consumption off of the premises where it is sold, (other than alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and food which has been prepared for immediate consumption) and prescription and non-prescription medicines, drugs, medical appliances and insulin, urine testing

Vote yes for 1 percent sales tax in Carroll Co. We in Carroll County again have an opportunity on Election Day to authorize a 1 percent sales tax to help fund our county public school facilities. Currently, our schools receive funds to operate mainly from local property tax and state aid. State funding has been questionable in recent years; so that leaves the responsibility for a majority of funding to make the schools operate at the feet of local property owners. The concept of the 1 percent sales tax is to spread the tax load over every person in the county, whether you buy gas and energy drinks at a Casey’s, stop at Land of Oz for a sandwich, or ride your bike to Poopy’s, everyone helps pay the bill. No one wants to pay more tax, but I feel property tax rates will continually creep higher until we our schools. I would speculate that if this is approved on Nov. 4,

Symposium explores raw milk safety issues, legal updates IDPH public hearing Nov. 6 in Springfield WASHINGTON, D.C. — A free live stream symposium on raw milk, featuring raw milk experts and activists, will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at www.fleetwoodonsite.com/wise/2014annual/ live_raw_milk. Mark McAfee, owner of the largest raw milk dairy in California and chairman of the Raw Milk Institute, Pete Kennedy, president of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, and Sally Fallon Morell, founder of A Campaign for Real Milk, will be featured. During the first hour raw milk legal updates for Canada and the U.S. will be presented by Karen Selick and Kennedy. Morell then will give a presentation on producing safe raw cheese. Cheese is a processed product, and whether
raw or pasteurized, it needs to be produced under strict sanitary conditions. Morell will share her experience as a cheese maker on sanitation, plant maintenance and record keeping, and will provide tips on how to pass an FDA inspection. McAfee then will provide a RAWMI progress report, RAWMI food safety success stories, and creating a bright and safe future for raw milk, from McAfee. The last session, A New California Raw Milk Dairy, will be presented by Cynthia Daley. It will focus on the steps required to pass through the grade A permit and licensing process, including all state and county agencies that are involved and their associated costs. Daley also will cover the details of the on-farm risk analysis and management plan to meet and exceed the needs of state standards as RAWMI works toward safe production methods for raw milk. The symposium, which also

For more than 30 years, the unlicensed on-farm sale of raw milk has been legal by policy in Illinois, and there have been no reports of food-borne illness attributed to Illinois raw milk producers going at least as far back as 1998, they maintain. The IDPH is taking the position that if there are no applicable state rules or regulations on the books, the policy is illegal.

During the initial 45-day comment period, which ended Oct. 20, the IDPH received more than 700 public comments about the regulations it is considering, Kennedy said. “This exceptional response has resulted in the IDPH holding a public hearing,” he said. “By law, the hearing must take place at least 5 days before the proposed rules are to be presented to the Joint Committee on Administrative Regulations for a second 45-day comment period.” JCAR is a legislative committee responsible for reviewing and implementing state regulations. That hearing will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Illinois Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. “This is the opportunity we hoped for to let the committee know in advance why it should reject the rules if IDPH does not withdraw them,” Kennedy said.

Letters and Commentary Response to Bork letter I am a independent voter of Whiteside County, but this is a response to Gerald Bork’s letter to the editor of Oct. 22. Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (and some older ones) didn’t know this, it’s easy to check out. Be sure to show it to your kids. They need a little history lesson on what’s what, and it doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican, facts is facts! Our Social Security: Franklin Roosevelt , a Democrat, introduced the Social Security Program (FICA). He promised: 1) That participation in the program would be completely voluntary. 2) That the participants would only have to incomes into the program, 3) That the money the participants elected to put Into the program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year, the independent “trust fund” rather than into the general operating fund would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other government program, and, 5) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income. Since then, many of us have paid into FICA pot over these many years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month, then of the money we paid to the federal government to be “put away.” Which political party took Social Security from the independent trust fund and put it into
the general fund so that Congress could spend it? It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratically controlled House and Senate. Which political party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding? The Democrats. Which political party started taxing Social Security annuities? The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the tiebreaking deciding vote as president of the Senate, while he was vice president. And my favorite: Which political party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants? That’s right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments. The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it! Then, after violating the original contract, the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away! And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it! If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully sure of what isn’t so. But it’s worth a try. Actions speak louder than bumper stickers. Can Mr. Bork tell me that this letter is wrong? Thank you for taking time to read this and remember there is a third candidate. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all broke the chain of being labeled a Republican or Democrat and vote them in? States. There is no law that allows individuals to buy U.S. citizenship. To imply this or to make statements to this effect is blatantly false. These statements have been made by Bustos, her campaign committee and political action committees that support her. If this assertion were true, it would be incumbent upon every congressman and every senator to stop it. Bustos not only voted to make the EB-5 law permanent, she co-sponsored the bill with support by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin in 2012. The EB-5 law was renewed by an overwhelming majority in both the House and Senate. (There were only three dissenting votes.) To characterize a law as a “loophole” and to state the individuals who invest through the EB-5 Program have only limited background checks is totally incorrect. Congress has put safeguards in place to ensure the integrity of the program. Aspects of the EB-5 Program are overseen by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Department of State, the FBI, the Department of Commerce and the Office of the Inspector General. She was at her desk recently with a stack of paperwork and an incessantly ringing phone, nonetheless ready to talk about what it takes to get Carroll County veterans the help they deserve.

There are also many state and local government agencies that play a role in the EB-5 Program, so to imply that the program lacks oversight or has limited background checks is disingenuous. These statements are beneath an elected official who knows the truth about CMB and the federal law in which we work. To make statements that CMB and/or Bobby Schilling are selling citizenship is false and is insulting to members of Congress and to the good people that work in these local, state and federal jobs. These are hardworking individuals with the best of intentions who are being painted with a brush that is smearing the good work that they do and the new American jobs that come from a result of their oversight. The 17th District has areas of high unemployment where new jobs through EB-5 would make a tremendous difference. CMB EB-5 investors have invested $1.5 billion of their own capital in projects where the total amount of spending exceeds $8 billion. CMB has helped create more than 90,000 new American jobs. Bustos implies it is only Chinese investors who are making these investments, which is another misleading statement. CMB investors are from 65 countries around the world. Poll update: Proposed sales tax for schools By TOM KOCAL Editor, Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com CARROLL COUNTY — An online poll at www.prairieadvocate. com asks readers their opinion of the proposed sales tax issue on Tuesday’s ballot. As of press time, the results of After previously failing twice, a referendum to implement a 1 percent Carroll County Schools Facility Sales Tax is again being presented to citizens on the November ballot. Will you support the user tax? 36% - Yes, I support our schools 100 percent 26% - No, we are already taxed too much 22% - Yes, but only if the state of Illinois rescinds the 67 percent income tax increase 11% - No, the state should make good on its state aid promises 5% - Other The two “no” selections indicate a 37 percent total, only 1 point ahead of the outright yes selection. The majority say no, but it’s too close to call. The 22 percent voting “Yes, but only if the state of Illinois rescinds the 67 percent income tax increase”, and the 5 percent “other” will have the third try at a schools facility tax, as will overall voter turnout, notoriously low during mid-term elections such as this year. Illinois’ rescinded income tax issue will greatly depend on the outcome of the election as a whole. Some candidates favor rescinding the 67 percent increase as promised by the Illinois Legislature when it was approved 2 years ago. HANOVER — Aministrators presented their reports at the Oct. 20 River Ridge School Board meeting. Area vocational representative and board member Raymie Diestelmeier updated the board on the latest AVC meeting, providing them with the 2015 course list and a potential list for 2016.
The board discussed potential agenda items for the upcoming November retreat, and received an update on the Lorado Taft field trip from fourth-grade teachers Krista Fry and Lara Walters. This was an outdoor education program attended by 40 students and eight chaperones. Elementary Principal Beau Buchs thanked the Parent Teacher Organization for paying for lodging and food;
other costs were paid with an Illinois Biodiversity Grant. The class of 2015 has selected New York City as the venue for its senior trip May 10-14; it will be a joint trip with the Scales Mound class of 2015. Graduation ceremonies will he held at 1 p.m. May 24. The board approved a motion to allow Sand Prairie Wireless to upgrade network switches to provide faster Internet speeds and greater efficiency for centralized management, at a cost of $8,745. The board heard reviews of
homecoming week activities, the ing day, which included tours of the Dura and Metform factories, and the annual craft fair. The high school will present “Hound of the Baskervilles” at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 and 8. AFS weekend is Nov. 14. The board complimented Emily Bender, Renee Schultz and the music department for the fall concert, and congratulated the middle school volleyball and football teams for earning conference championships.

Obituaries Dorothy M. Stoner
Dorothy M. Stoner, 90, of Lanark, passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014 at Liberty Village in Freeport. She was born March 18, 1924 on a farm in Carroll County, a daughter of Howard and Marie (Willson) Derrer. She attended Rowland Rural School and was a 1942 graduate of Lanark High School. Dorothy married Robert David Stoner on Nov. 30, 1944. He preceded her in death on May 23, 2011. They farmed all their lives in the Shannon and Lanark area. She was a member of the First Brethren Church in Lanark, the Home Extension for more than 50 years, and the Rock Creek and Pomona Granges. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, reading, and puzzles. Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Darrell Lyle (Carol) Stoner and Duane Keith (Bonnie) Stoner, both of Shannon, her daughter-in-law, Beverly Stoner of Lanark, eight grandchildren, Melissa (Paul) Schake, Steven (Jamie) Stoner, Stephanie (Jason) Steen, Ryan (Shelley) Stoner, Sarah (Tim) Kaus, Calli Stoner, Cassi (Chris) Sturtz, and Codie (Amanda) Stoner, and 32 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters and brothers, Ileen Knapp of Freeport, Betty Lindstrom of Lanark, Wayne Derrer of Lanark, Paul (Margene) Derrer of Roscoe and Helen Derrer of Shannon, her sisters-in-law, Betty Derrer of Shannon, Bev Derrer of Lanark, Jan (Jim) Dillow of Shannon, and Arlene (Merv) Diehl of Freeport. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her stepmother, Miranda Derrer, a son, Dennis Stoner, her granddaughters, Staci and Traci Stoner, her great-granddaughter, Ebony Sturtz, and her brothers, Glenn and Lawrence Derrer. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at First Brethren Church in Lanark. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Clair Lathrop, pastor,

Meet new senior center employee Karen Holm Hi, I am Karen Holm, the new employee at Carroll County Senior Center. I grew up in Morrison and 1978. I was working at the Atwood factory at that time, and I stayed with the company until they shut the doors in 2003. Then in 2004 I started working with my husband in the family septic pumping business. We bought our and we worked closely for the next 3 years, until 2007. In 2008 I went to school, got working at Big Meadows in Good Samaritan in Mount Carroll. During 2010 and early 2011 I went
back to school again, this time to get an associate’s degree in administration. My hus-

Carroll County Tax-Aide seeks counselors MOUNT CARROLL – AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, needs volunteers to help Carroll their 2014 tax returns. Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance to low- and mediumincome taxpayers, with emphasis on those older than 60. Volunteers receive free tax training. They must
have computer experience, because They need not be an AARP member. Last year, 645 taxpayers were helped at the Carroll County site. West Carroll 1 won the doubleelimination tournament the hard then won eight games, defeating River Ridge 2 twice in the title match. The top four teams were West Carroll 1, River Ridge 2, River Ridge 1, and West Carroll 2.
Competing on West Carroll 2 were Abbigail Law, Riley Sullivan, Ashton Wand and Shaelynn Williams. SAVANNA — The 1950-59 Chadwick High School graduates met Sept. 4 at Manny’s for a “Nifty ‘50s” luncheon and party. “There were 75 in attendance, and everyone seemed to be having a great, memorable time,” organizer Rogene Rogers said. “We had members from Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona, Maine and Iowa.” Roy Huffstetler made a cane and a bird house that were presented to the oldest graduates, Robert Stewart and Nancy Farthing Gipe. Prizes also were given for whoever came the farthest, etc. “Since we had such a wonderful time, we decided to get together again on Sept. 10, same time, same place. If you graduated in the ‘50s, please join us,” Rogers said.

Mercy Hospice unveils annual quilt CLINTON, Iowa — The 12th Mercy Hospice Quilt, titled “Seasons of Life,” was designed by Sue Tappe to convey the message of the seasons of life, love and happiness. The annual Hospice Quilt lists those who died and who had been touched, in any way, by the support and services provided by Mercy Hospice. Family members are encouraged to touch the name of their loved ones stitched in the quilt as part of a healing process. Tappe began making and donating the quilts after her husband died in 2002. “We want to thank all the caregivers that looked after these loved ones as they were taking their journey to the next life,” Tappe said. “They are family members, friends, neighbors, religious counselors and the Mercy Hospice staff. By Gloria Yoder Dear Friends Both Far and Wide, Hello from Flat Rock, Illinois! We’re having a full, yet interesting week. There are two things I’m especially looking forward to this week. One is a brand new armoire my husband is making for my birthday, and the other is a new pony that will be arriving on Friday. Hopefully in more details about the pony. When my husband, Daniel, asked me what I’d like to have as a birthday gift from him I just didn’t know what to tell him. All at once it clicked. I said I’d be thrilled to have a new armoire for all our winter coats, jackets, shoes, etc. That would be a large enough gift for me to last for two birthdays, I told him! Now with fall here and winter just around the corner we began discussing how big to make it, what kind of wood to use and what style to make it. With Daniel being an expert at building furniture, he was full of good ideas and did a wonderful job designing a print for it. On Monday he built, stained
Next the children split up into several groups, going into separate rooms with their teacher. Each class has a different workbook. The youngest ones have a Bible story and picture to color that goes with the story. They also have a Bible verse to memorize. The oldest classes have booklets that tell them which chapter to study as well as questions they have to answer about their chapter for the day, along with a memory verse. While the children go to their classes, the remaining part of the congregation has a chapter that is read by one of the ministers followed by a discussion by the men and boys about the chapter. Sunday school teachers take turns by trading off every half year. Right now it’s Daniel’s turn. He is teaching the 12- to 15-yearolds. He enjoys his class. We decided to invite the children to our house for supper while the
weather is still pleasant enough to be outside. We want to build a there. They also plan to help Daniel remove some cockleburs that we have in our pasture. So that will also give Daniel a lift. I think I’ll make pizza for their supper. That’s something that most people like. I’ll share one of our favorite pizza recipes with you. Instead of using pizza sauce, you spread the crust with barbecue sauce. To me, one of the biggest secrets in preparing a tasty pizza is making sure it’s moist enough by not overbaking the crust and adding plenty of sauces. Daniel has sharp taste buds, especially with spices, so he likes it when I use plenty of seasonings as well. Of course, ingredients may be added or omitted according to your taste. Talking about Daniel’s Sunday school class, you may or may not be familiar with our Sunday schools, so I’ll explain. Every other Sunday, we as a congregation gather for church services. On the “in between” Sunday we again all get together for Sunday school. After singing several songs, one of the men shares a brief devotional and leads in prayer.
