The Life of Christopher Columbus
C
hristopher Columbus is credited with opening the passageways between Europe and the Americas for colonization. Though his famed voyage in 1492 is widely known, many people know little about the man whose explorations forever changed the course of world history. Cristoforo Columbo was born on October 31, 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. His father, Domenico, was a middle-class wool weaver and also dabbled in cheese making. Columbus had three brothers, Bartolomeo, Giovanni, and Giacomo, and a sister, Bianchinetta. Much of Columbus’ life was spent in the world of sea and travel. He apprenticed as a business agent for important Italian families, allegedly making trips to England, Ireland and possibly Iceland and may even have made several Mediterranean and Aegean sea voyages. When he traveled to modern-day Greece, it was the closest Columbus would come to reaching Asia. Columbus’ first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean took place in 1476, not in 1492. His commercial fleet was attacked by French privateers off the coast of Portugal, and his ship was burned. Columbus survived by swimming to Lisbon, eventually settling there and meeting his future wife, Filipa. The couple had a son, Diego, but soon after giving birth, Filipa died and Columbus relocated to Spain. Columbus sired another son, Fernando, during a relationship with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana. Columbus participated in many different expeditions, including some to Africa to gain knowledge of Atlantic Ocean currents. He believed it would be easier to sail westward to reach India and China and avoid Muslim domination of trade routes in the Middle East. Columbus set out to find financial backing for a discovery voyage to determine what was west of Europe and to find uninterrupted water routes. The voyager was rejected by the Portuguese king and Serving the Community for over 125 Years!

also in Venice and Genoa. Columbus’ initial plan was also rejected by Spain. But in 1492, after Spain ended a war with Muslims, the Spaniards agreed to finance Columbus’ expedition, and in August of 1492, he set sail in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Nina as companion ships. After a five-week voyage across the ocean and a few stops in the Canary Islands for provisions, Columbus and his shipmates spotted land at roughly 2 a.m. on the morning of October 12, 1492. The crew reached land that they named San Salvador (the island now known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas). Upon his arrival, Columbus encountered indigenous people who were friendly, but he used them to find gold and other valuables. The voyagers soon traveled to Cuba and other islands of the what became known as “The New World,” before ultimately returning to Spain. Columbus made subsequent trips westward, but conditions at the Hispaniola settlement established by the explorer during his second voyage were deteriorating and the Spanish arrested Columbus, stripping him of his titles and authority. He eventually recovered some riches and respect, but Columbus’ legacy continues to inspire debate even now. While he may have opened up trade routes and furthered colonization around the world while paving the way for future explorers, he also helped destroy the customs of many native people. Christopher Columbus died in Spain on May 20, 1506. Though his reputation remains a hot topic of debate, each year Americans celebrate Columbus Day on October 12th to commemorate Columbus’ life and accomplishments.

Obituaries Alice A. Adolph
CHADWICK – Alice Arlene Adolph, 93, of Chadwick, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at Resthave Home in Morrison. Alice was born July 20, 1923, the daughter of Walter and Olive (George) Queckboerner. She married Richard Adolph on Jan. 21, 1945. He preceded her in death in 2009. Alice farmed with her husband, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chadwick. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Robert) Kappes of Chadwick and Juanita Adolph of Plains, Montana; one daughterin-law, Deb Adolph of Chadwick; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Terry Adolph; and one brother, Donald Queckboerner. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, and the funeral service at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church of Chadwick. Burial will be at Chadwick Cemetery. SHANNON – Ronald Rugland, 64, of Shannon, died suddenly from an aneurysm Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1952, to Ralph and Marilyn (Miller) Rugland. He graduated in 1969 from Shannon High School. He went on to attend Northern Illinois University, where
he received his master’s degree in art. After college, Ronald taught English to the military in Iran. He returned to Chicago and took up employment at RR Donnelley Publishing Co. as a supervisor. He then became manager of the Research Department. Ronald then moved back to the Shannon area and taught art at Dakota High School until he retired to enjoy his art and gardening. In his younger days, he traveled all over the world backpacking. He was a true artist in all he did. He was a photographer, jewelry maker and carpenter. He was known as a “jack of all trades.” He is survived by his partner of 35 years, Selwyn Leslie of Shannon; aunts, Judy (Fred) Thompson of Shannon and Linda Gronewald of Lanark; uncles, Darrold Miller of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Wayne L. Miller Sr. of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins;
and special friends, Lynn Edler of Shannon, Michelle Horner of Shannon, Connie Lien, Hiep, and Hope of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Roxi. Jensen said the city has the power to regulate such billboards, which are on vacant properties and buidings, and can amortize offpremises signs. He recommended the council amend the relevant ordinance and either provide for a 5- to 7-year amortization of the nonconforming signs or pay just compensation to the owners of the signs in return for removing them. He noted, though, that if the city tries to amortize instead of paying just
compensation to have them removed, the city would be vulnerable to lawsuits alleging violation of Illinois’ Eminent Domain Act. “We have to be prepared to pay,” Jensen said. The signs that could be slated for removal are at 208 Chicago Ave., 604 Main St., 801 Chicago Ave., 723 Viaduct Road, and 1817 Chicago Ave.

Trapping bids wanted for refuge areas Prairie Advocate staff
THOMSON – Bidding is open until Oct. 21 for a special trapping program at two units of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The programs allow exclusive furbearer trapping rights under restrictive conditions during the duck hunting season. Areas affected are the Spring Lake Unit south of Savanna, and the Pleasant Creek Unit south of Bellevue. Interested trappers can submit sealed bids at the refuge headquarters, 7071 Riverview Road. A minimum bid of $200 is required. Bids will be opened Oct. 24, and successful high bidders will before trapping will be allowed, in accordance with state trapping dates, Trappers can bid on one or both units, but separate bids must be submitted. Access to the units will be restricted to 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to reduce disturbance to waterfowl. Three helpers Vehicle access will be allowed on designated levees. No refuge trap tags will be needed, and an unlimited number of traps are allowed. A minimum of 100 trap-nights per week is required. Exclusive trapping rights will end, and all traps must be removed, on the last date of the regular state hunting season – Dec. 4 in Iowa and Dec. 13 in Illinois. National 4-H Week being celebrated by local clubs BY LEANNE RAHN Carroll County program coordinator, 4-H & Youth
MOUNT CARROLL – County 4-H members will join 6 million youths across the country in celebrating National 4-H Week, Oct. 2-8. 4-H youth development programs provide handson learning activities for youth in Illinois and throughout the country. 4-H youth programs focus on life skills. Every county in Illinois has a 4-H program which is operated through University of Illinois Extension. 4-H club membership is open to youths aged 8 to 18. Youths 5 to 7 may join the 4-H Cloverbud program. There are several ways to participate in 4-H. Youth may join 4-H clubs, coordinated by local Each club decides how often it meets, the location of its meetings, and the activities during the meeting. Members may select from more than 100 different project areas to study while they build leadership, teamwork, cooperation, decision-making and communication skills. Youth may also choose project area and join a that one project. Robotics, photography, gardening, visual arts, and nutrition, are just a few of the popular topics for special interest clubs. One may also participate in 4-H through short-term projects held during school or at after-school youth these popular groups teach youth about caring for the environment, preparing for a career, making healthy choices or other priority issues which build a person’s life skills. Savanna Rotarians spent time during a recent meeting sorting lids for Val’s Garden. Lids are being collected to help provide another bench for the garden area. CARROLL COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT CARROLL COUNTY JAIL MEAL BID SPECFICATIONS The Carroll County Jail is accepting sealed bids to provide meals for the inmates. The inmates receive breakfast, lunch, and an evening meal. The evening meal must be a hot meal. The inmates must receive at least 2000 calories a day and they must have something other than water to drink for each meal. Inmates must have 8 ounces of milk for breakfast and the option of 8 ounces of milk for the evening meal. Frozen dinners are acceptable as the hot meal. They must be at least 14.5 ounces. A variety of not less than six different entrees must be offered. Frozen dinners can be heated at the jail. If the bidder plans to provide the hot meal in some other fashion, they must prepare and cook the meals. Food must be delivered to the county jail within 48 hours of orders phoned in by the the jail staff. Bids must be sealed and labeled “Sealed Bid for Jail Meals”. Bids must be received by the Carroll County Clerk's Office no later than 4p.m., on Friday, October 14, 2016. The length of service will be for two years beginning December 1, 2016. Rolling Hills Progress Center Executive Director Brandon Rumler gets his face painted at Saturday’s Apple festival in Lanark. The festival is an annual fundraiser for RHPC with various games and activities for the whole family.
Judging by the grin on his face, Lucas Mammosser, 3, of Rock Falls was happy to win his heat Saturday in the 3-year-old division at the Sterling Park District’s Pumpkin Dash at Hoover Park. Kids 12 and under were grouped by age and dashed their way throughout the day at the park. Winners took home a big pumpkin, and the first 1,000 finishers pocketed a smaller one. Other activities included a petting zoo, bounce houses, ambulance tours, face painting, barrel rides and more. Fast times and fun weren’t the only reason to celebrate; the annual event celebrated its 25th year of giving fleet-footed kids a reason to smile.

POLO – Argument: a football team can thrive with a defense that bends but doesn’t break. Counter-argument: a team can be yet more successful if its defense doesn’t even bend. Polo was a living embodiment of that counter-argument Friday night, completely choking the offense of an upstart Milledgeville squad in a 13-0 victory. Eastland-Pearl City 14, Dakota 6: Brighton Haverland tossed a 38-yard TD pass to Skylar Fischer and scored on a 1-yard plunge to lead the Wildcatz (6-0 overall, 5-0 NUIC Northwest) past the Indians (3-3, 3-3) on Friday night in Dakota. Haverland passed for 110 yards and rushed for 87 more. Keegan Schubert rushed for 69 yards on 15 carries, and spearheaded the defensive effort with 10 tackles, including seven solos. West Carroll 42, Durand 7: Kody Plattenberger completed 9 of 13 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown as the Thunder (2-4 overall, 1-4 NUIC Northwest) handled the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-5 NUIC Upstate) in Durand.
