MOUNT CARROLL – A jury needed less than Freeport man guilty of December 2015 death of his wife. Morgan D. Hake, 50, degree murder for the death of Suzanne M. Hake, 46. She was found dead Dec. 5, 2015, at their home in Lanark, and Morgan Sentencing was set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4. Hake faces 20 to 60 years in prison. The jury of six men and six women heard closing arguments from Daniel Dalton, one of Hake’s attorneys, and Carroll County State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier. Before the arguments, Circuit Judge Val Gunnarsson asked Hake whether he wanted the jury murder, and Hake said yes. that he and Suzanne traveled Dec. 3 to watch their daughter Abigail’s basketball game, then stayed at a hotel. On Dec. 4, they shopped and drank in Galena, ending up at a bar, Suzanne then left Morgan in Galena, and he called their elder daughter, Hannah, to come pick him up. Morgan then drove his black Chevrolet Impala early on the morning of Dec. 5 from the couple’s Freeport home to their home in Lanark, breaking the front porch door before unlocking the home’s front door and heading upstairs. Obituaries Michael F. Zell
CHADWICK – Michael Fredrick Zell, 69, of Chadwick, passed away Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at home. Michael was born Oct. 19, 1946, the son of Harold and Ruth (Palmer) Zell in Waterloo, Iowa. He lived with effects of childhood polio, but never let it slow him down. Mike was a graduate of the Waterloo High School. On Dec. 4, 1979, Michael married Phyllis Johnson in Keokuk, Iowa. He and Phyllis moved to Chadwick in 1997. They celebrated 36 years of marriage. Mike began his truck driving career hauling meat. Later, he began transporting tankers of corn syrup
and hazardous materials until retiring in 2013. Mike enjoyed baking with the grandkids, watching his favorite TV shows, “The Blacklist” and “Blind Spot,” shopping, and running errands with his grandson, Elijah. He loved driving his semi and visited 49 states and Canada. Michael will be dearly missed by his wife, Phyllis, of Chadwick; seven children, daughter, Holly (Chad) Fogle of Lanark, son Michael P.(Melissa) Zell of Clinton, Iowa, stepson Cory (Stephanie) Stehl of Collinsville, Oklahoma, stepson Philip Stehl of Lanark, son Scott (Shelly) Zell of Vinton, Iowa, daughter Tracy (Bill) Norwood of Florida, and daughter Stephanie (Mark) Gossman of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; one
great-grandson, and two brothers, Blair (Joan) Zell of Chicago and John (Deb Butler) Zell of Massachusetts. Michael was preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of life service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. SAVANNA – Raelyn Michele Dickman, 59, of Savanna, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. Raelyn was born April
9, 1957, in Freeport, the daughter of Richard and Rita (Stayner) Dickman. She attended St. John Catholic Elementary School and later Savanna High School. Raelyn worked as a factory worker at Rolling Hills Progress Center in Lanark. She loved her job and was given the honor of employee of the year in 2010. SAVANNA – Funding information from the state has rarely been anything but bad news for school districts in recent years. But West Carroll got some good news of sorts recently. Superintendent Adam Brumbaugh told the school board the district will get about $140,000 more from the state than it had originally projected in its budget, because of grant money and other changes in the state funding picture. Hake describes struggle, shooting HAKE

When she came in and did this fancy dance, I said, ‘That’s a hell of an entrance,’” Morgan said. The woman kept dancing in front of the band, and in front of the Hakes. “At a point, she [Suzanne] looked at that girl, then at me, said ‘You ruin everything,’ and grabbed her coat,” Hake said. She drove them in what he called “a driving rage” to their hotel, where she dropped him off. Between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, Hake called their older daughter, Hannah, who drove him to their Freeport home. He grabbed his keys and drove back to Lanark. “I wanted to speak to Suzy, to try and get some resolution as to what tried to happen earlier. The way she drove, I didn’t suspect she’d ever make it to Freeport,” Hake said. About 1 a.m., he arrived, knocked on the locked porch door, then took hold of it and pulled loose the hinge screws, breaking the door. He grabbed a house key from the keybox, entered the house and headed upstairs,
where Suzanne was lying with her eyes closed, facing the door. “As I started to sit down on the bed, Suzy sat up,” Hake said. “She pulled a knife from under her pillow, swung it over her head, and at me. She had both hands on it and swung it toward me. When she went down, I grabbed both of her arms. I jumped on her and straddled her, took hold of both of her arms.” The couple struggled for the knife, with Hake striking her over her left shoulder attempting to get her to release the knife. Suddenly, she went limp and fell backwards on the bed. Hake said her eyes were wide open, and she was just staring at the ceiling. “Were you trying to communicate with her?” Nieman asked. “I had laid the knife down. I was holding her arms,” Morgan said. “All of a sudden, I felt a lot of warmth. There was a lot of blood, soaking my pant leg and the bed.” He tried a little longer to get her to respond, then backed up 3 or 4 feet. “My breath was gone and I bent down on my knees. I reached for my phone and that’s when it happened,”
Hake said. “It” was Suzanne pulling on a blue gun case from beneath her bed, with a gun on top of it. Hake said she was able to point in his direction, and he cowered down in reaction. “I was able to come out of my huddled down position,” he said. And she had the gun in her hand. She was taking the slide back as quick as she could,” he said. He was able to take the gun from her, then aimed the gun at her and tried to communicate with her. “I was screaming, ‘Suzy! Suzy!’ Even with the gun at her, she was looking at me,” Hake said. “She grabbed the knife and sprung out of there as if I wasn’t holding the gun. She ran toward me.” She swung the knife at Hake, who said he then grabbed her in a bear hug and was able to hold on to her arm with which she held the knife. He had the gun in his other hand, and they spun around several times as Suzanne attempted to jerk her arm free. The couple then headed toward the doorway, where Suzanne pulled her arm free and put up her arm. “When I grabbed her arm and had her in a bear hug, I just shoved her into the
banister,” Hake said. “As quick as she hit the banister, I heaved her toward the hallway. When I threw her away, I pulled the trigger two times. Her feet came out from underneath her.” Suzanne then slid down the stairs, and Hake said she lifted her head. “She was trying to look up the steps. I shot her in the head,” he said. He tossed the knife into a chair before driving off. confessing to most of them, then drove to a Circle K convenience store in Freeport and surrendered to Hake later wrote a letter to his in-laws. “I wanted to reach out to her [Mary Lu Johnson, Hake’s mother-in-law]. Because the pastor told me her and my mother were sitting in the front row of the funeral holding hands, and I felt I needed to tell her something,” Hake said, breaking down and crying. Hake will be sentenced Nov. 4. He faces 20 to 60 years or up to life in prison. He’s also charged with felony possession of a weapon, punishable by 2 to 5 years in prison. That case will be tried separately.

MILLEDGEVILLE – Carroll County Fair will recognize a Milledgeville High School track coach. This year’s Carroll County Fair Friends of the Fair 5K is in memory of Nancy Dittmar. The run will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 1 at the fairgrounds, 28374 Milledgeville Road. A kids’ fun run in memory of Dittmar will begin at 8:45. Dittmar coached track for more than 20 years at Milledgeville High School, and taught for more than 40 years. The track at the high school is named for her. Dittmar also volunteered for more than

SUNDAY CROP Hunger Walk in Thomson THOMSON – The Thomson CROP Hunger Walk will take place Sunday, with participants raising awareness and funds to combat world hunger and poverty. Funds benefit the work and ministry of Church World Service. Of the money raised locally, 25 percent will help the Fulton Food Pantry, Great River Outreach and Thomson Children’s Christmas Fund. OCT. 6 Busy Parents, Easy Meals workshop in Freeport In an effort to help busy parents plan family meals, University of Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator Diane Reinhold will present “Busy Parents, Easy Meals” a 2-part workshop series offering ideas on how to prepare easy healthy meals. The first workshop in the series, titled “Slow Cooker Meals” will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This workshop will cover the benefits of healthy eating in a fast paced world, slow cooker basics, the timing of adding ingredients, the features and designs of various cookers, and of course food safety basics. OREGON — Harley Jo Gengenbach, daughter of Kathleen Gengenbach of Lanark, attended a Special Camp in June at White Pines Ranch in Oregon, an all volunteer-run camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The camp encourages independence and self esteem and also to provide the opportunity for new friendships. Harley Jo’s favorite activity was grooming, painting and riding the horses. She did so well at this activity that she was awarded top horseback rider of the whole camp. The camp theme was Going on Safari, and daytime activities included, grooming, painting, and riding horses, swimming, crafts, sports, music and dance, wood working and talent shows. In the evenings, campers enjoyed and s’mores, a hay ride, bingo, dances, and a visit from the Blooze Brothers.

Foot Care FHN will be administering flu shots from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 21 at
the Senior Center. Please bring your Medicare card . The cost of the high dose shot this year will be $57 for people over 65 if not covered by Medicare Part B or Medicare Replacement Plan accepted by FHN. People under 65 will be given the quadrivalent vaccine with an out-ofpocket cost of $40. No insurance plan claims can be processed other than Medicare Part B or Medicare Replacement Plan. Because many participants are confused by the Medicare Replacement Cards versus Medicare Cards, our Central Business office has requested that we make a copy of all available medical cards so that the appropriate charges can be made and third-party payer identified at all locations possible. A picture ID will also be requested and copied. Medicaid restrictions preclude their acceptance of Medicaid at locations.
What do you do with your old cellphones? Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones. We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons. We have recently received $15 for phone refunds. There is one box at the Senior Center now. If the program goes well, we will increase the number of boxes and place them in other areas around the county. If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cellphones, ask them to drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. In my last Driver’s Seat, I gave you a brief history and purpose of Carroll County Transit. Since then, many wonderful events have started to unfold. First of all, CCT in conjunction with William Hanna and the Carroll County Veterans Affairs Council have opened a dialogue in how to better serve our veterans. CCT already has a special fare schedule for veterans, but we are now working with the VAC on a plan to better use the resources that Carroll County has to offer in doing so. On Sept. 22, the Region 1 Transportation meeting was hosted here at the Senior Center, as we were proud to have them see the wonderful remodeling job that has been done. On Oct. 28 there will be an Open House. If you would like to join in the festivities, such as seeing Frank Sinatra and Elvis that day, please feel free to call Carroll County Transit for a ride. And speaking of rides, ... on Sept. 15 Carroll County Transit picked up a
new 2016 Dodge Caravan 6-passenger van. We now have 3 12-passenger buses and 6 6-passenger vans. They are all handicap accessible and ready to roll over the scenic hills of Carroll County and beyond. We are promoting our ongoing advertising campaign. This includes advertising in the form of window wraps on the vehicles as well as ad space in our new Passenger Handbook. Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. SAVANNA – The Palisades Art League will host its 55th annual Fall Art Show and Sale from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 22 and noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at the West Carroll Primary School cafeteria on Wacker Road. Monetary prizes will be given for the amateur and advanced winners in Best of Show selections in both Photography and Fine Art categories, with ribbons being awarded to other competitors for excellent work. PAL members will also choose one of their own to receive the PAL Peer Award. Guests of the show will be able to vote for their favorite piece of work in both art and photography for the People’s Choice Award. All artists, whether amateur or advanced in experience, may enter, but artwork will be divided according to the mediums of painting, mixed media drawing, dimensional works, photography and computer generated art
media grouping will be subject to the discretion of the judges. This year, work from artists in kindergarten through 12th grade will be judged separately. Their entry fee will be $1 per piece. Fees for PAL members will be $2, and for nonmembers $3. Entries will be separated according to the categories, which include Portrait/Figure, Landscapes/Seascapes, Abstracts, Still Life, Portrait/ Figure, Nature and Action. Final media grouping will be based on the number of works entered and be subject to judge’s discretion. All art work must be original, never previously entered in a PAL show, and be properly framed with wire hangers, not modern back bar hangers. Nude art is not acceptable, and the PAL also reserves the right to accept, reject or re-classify any entry.
Registration for entries must be sent by Oct. 20 to Palisades Art League, P.O. Box 125, Savanna, IL 61074. All artwork will need to be delivered to the West Carroll Primary School between 5 and 8 p.m. Oct. 21. The Judge’s Critique will start at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 24 for both Photography and Fine Art. All artists and photographers entered are welcome to attend. Heartland Pet Welfare will have BBQ sandwiches and baked goods for sale Oct. 22 and 23. The Morrison Mustangs fell behind early, but seized control in the second quarter and didn’t let up in a 47-35 win Friday at Bud Cole Field. Trailing 14-6 after the first quarter, Morrison (2-3, 1-1) poured on three touchdowns in the second to take a lead they wouldn’t give back in a Three Rivers Rock victory. Aaron Deter led the rushing attack for the Mustangs with a game-high 152 yards, while teammate Cody Southern added 97. Deter also added five touchdowns – three from 1 yard, as well as an 11- and 4-yarder. Also for Morrison, Ethan Fischbach scored on a 97-yard kickoff return, his fourth of the season. Morrison gained 322 yards on the ground, and outgained the Rams 408-243. Riverdale (1-4, 0-2) got five rushing touchdowns from Parker Corson, who ran for 132 yards on 21 carries.
