Village OKs work to make wells better

Replacement of one well, fixes to another ahead By TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate SHANNON – One well will be repaired, while equipment on another will be replaced. Once the work, expected to cost about $85,000, is completed, both wells will be operating like new, the Shannon Village Board was told during its meeting June 2. The wells are part of the village’s aging four-well water system, which has seen a recent and dramatic decrease in production. Cahoy Group evaulated the pumping equipment, and regional manager Ernie to the board. He said equipment replacement on well 1 will cost between $23,000 and $24,000. Well 2 is a bit more of a project, he said, and inspection “was quite the exciting time.” The well was pumping 88 gallons a minute, Lilja said, between one-half and one-third of what it should be pumping. “All that water was cascading in from the pump’s top side and the positioning of the intake on the

Aerating water adds air, or oxygen, to the water, forming bubbles – or “white water” – that dissipates. A second major issue, Lilja said, is pump cavitation – the formation and subsequent implosion of vapor bubbles. The gas bubbles affect the pump’s operating pressure and wasted expanding bubbles instead of bringing more liquid into the pump. “Also, when we ran a camera down there we thought it was only going to be set at 240 feet as is shown in the records, but it ended up being down at 620
to the bottom, we found a string of drilling tools and pipes with couplers buried in the sediment.” He said the debris found in the well limits its depth and affects its efficiency. Lilja assured the board there are no health risks associated with leaving the tools and pipes in the well. “Part of the reason production has dropped on that well is because part of the water that should be coming in from that side is being blocked by the silt and everything else that’s down there,” Lilja said. He said there are several remedies and suggested air bursting, a more economical process than digging a new well (about $600,000) that would still provide a viable and lasting solution. Air bursting is a relatively common practice that uses compressed air to produce a 12-inch bubble that expands with enough force to fracture water bearing formations and create bigger Lilja also recommended putting a sleeve over the well’s new pump to force water down and around the pump to keep it operating at maximum

Out-of-state poultry will not be allowed at fairs this summer SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Agriculture announced Friday that out-of-state birds will not be allowed to compete in Illinois exhibitions until further notice due to the highly pathogenic affecting several states. This restriction includes county fairs, FFA and 4-H fairs, Illinois State Fair, and the DuQuoin State Fair. This summer, the Carroll County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom program will be out and about promoting ag education to children ages 3 to 12. These programs will be in various libraries throughout the county. In June, we will be learning about insects and how they help us grow our food supply. A story, “Seed, Soil, Sun: Earth’s Recipe for Food,” will be read along with an interactive hands-on activity and snack. There is no cost to attend, but we are asking for reservations to ensure we have enough supplies. On Tuesday, June 16, we will be at the Lanark Public Library at 10 a.m. and the Wysox Township Library at 1 p.m.. A SAVANNA WHODUNIT
The killings of Pulford and Berry brought to stage SAVANNA — Daniel S. Berry was an able lawyer and politician. He was murdered in front of his the Pulford Building, May 22, 1905. The news spread gathered about the scene of the tragedy vainly trying mysterious assassin, who after committing the horrible deed, made his escape without anyone seeing him. Bothwell Pulford was a progressive man who assisted in the development
of Savanna. About 1850, he built a large house where the Savanna Public Library now stands, quarrying the rock and hewing all the timber used in construction. On May 25, just 3 days after the murder of Berry, Pulford, dressed in his best suit, lost his life! Writer/director Al Cairo has assembled a cast of local and area actors who will portray the two men and other townspeople in the drama, “The Killing of Pulford and Berry.” The original play will be presented Friday though Sunday at the Savanna
Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main St. Prior to the performances, tours of the Opera House, now owned by Jerry and Vicky Gendreau, will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from noon until 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Saturday, tours of the former Berry mansion are being offered between noon and 4 p.m. Present owners, Eli and Rodney Burick-Young, will welcome guests on Saturday only. Berry served two terms in the state Legislature, several occasions.

An article found in the Sterling Library Collections, source unknown, about 1913, reported, “Mr. Berry was a man of marked ability, one of the ablest and shrewdest lawyers at the Carroll County bar and at one time had a promising political future before him had he rightly and wisely preserved it. He was the attorney for the Milwaukee and St. Paul railway at the time of his death and was connected with the biggest lawsuits ever held in Carroll County.” He had assisted in the prosecution of the Marcus train robbers and other
criminals, and had made enemies, whose friends could have taken revenge. According to the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, by Newton Bateman and Paul Selby, and “History of Carroll County,” Pulford was a hard working man who never spared himself and was noted for his business judgment and ability. He accumulated considerable wealth. Among his accomplishments, he bought built in the city, and later installed a larger plant in the opera house building. The town was rife with
rumors 110 years ago. Who killed Daniel Berry? Was the assailant a former convict who Berry had prosecuted, or was it Bothwell Pulford, once a dear animosity? Why did Pulford die? Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. A minimum donation of $5 will be appreciated. Casey’s General Store breaks ground in Lanark Store scheduled to open Oct. 18 By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com
LANARK – It’s a small town, so everyone has known a Casey’s General Store will be coming to Lanark. until the real estate deal closed and contracts were signed. Now, site work has begun on the northwest corner of state routes 64 and 73. A 3,300-square-foot convenience store and gas station is slated for opening Oct. 18. On June 2, local subcontractor Fischer Excavating in Freeport started removing about 300 loads of topsoil to get the site down to grade. “A retaining wall will be built next, on the north side
of the site, and wrap around the building.” said Jordan Way, project manager with Septagon Construction in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Then the fuel tanks will be put in and the building constructed at the same time.” Fuel tank delivery is scheduled for mid-July, when, if all goes well, the ready. Once construction begins, there will be a roof on the building within 10 days. “Usually, we turn the building over to the setup crew on a Monday, and by that Friday, everything will be ready to open,” Way said. “We build all the interior shelving, so it’s just a matter of Casey’s’ 20 people to stock the store, do training of the new employees, then in a day or two, after we make sure all the bugs are worked out, we turn it over to Casey’s.” -

STERLING – A bill that will help domestic violence victims get back on their feet after leaving their abusers is now headed to the Gov. Bruce Rauner for his signature. The bill, co-sponsored by state Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is focused on extending the amount of time victims of domestic violence have to become before making an initial deposit for utility bills. Carol Fitzgerald, executive director of the YWCA of the Sauk Valley, said that will be a great thing for domestic violence victims, both locally and statewide. “Domestic violence victims are often victims of economic abuse,” she said. “So, that means that a bad economic record can follow them. Then, what happens is, when people have a bad economic record and they go out to look for separate housing or go out to sign up for utilities, they’re not able to get that.
“Sometimes the abuser takes out credit in their name and ruins their credit, and so having more time to pay those utility bills, that’s a Fitzgerald said it was common for victims to come to the YWCA for help in getting back on moving from an abusive living arrangement can keep people in dangerous situations,” Smiddy said in a news release. “As state leaders, we need to take
hardships of victims, and allowing additional time to establish initial payments is Senate Bill 1645 requires
approved, the violence must sonnel, a law enforcement agency, a state’s attorney, the attorney general, or a domestic violence shelter.

LANARK – This summer, four area farmers markets will be a place where you can buy – and learn how to grow and cook — fresh, locally-grown produce. Master Gardeners in Carroll and Whiteside counties will spend the summer attending local farmers markets to share their knowledge about growing and preparing different kinds of vegetables and offering new recipe cards. On June 20, Master Gardeners will discuss Swiss chard from 8 a.m. to noon at the Sterling Farmers Market, 106 Avenue A in downtown Sterling; and from 8 a.m. to noon at the Mount Carroll Farmers Market, on the brick streets in downtown Mount Carroll. The Master Gardeners will be in Morrison from 8 to 11 a.m. June 27 at the Morrison Farmers Market, in the Whiteside County parking lot behind 204 E. Lincolnway. Some sites will have samples of the recipe available to try. LANARK – A new showroom for E&S Equipment, a new joint venture between Eastland Fabrication of Lanark and Stutsman Inc. from Hills, Iowa, is under construction. The partnership was announced in April. Earth moving started at the end of May. Steve Coulthard, a co-owner of Eastland Fabrication along with Mike Sweitzer and Kim “Everything they sell, we’ll be able to offer here. It’s a great opportunity to grow.” Coulthard said the expanded product line necessitated a new showroom “up the hill” and directly east of the present building north of Lanark on state Route 73.
“We hope to be in by August,” Haan said. The new showroom will feature Stutsman’s complete line of agricultural products: Fuel trailers, fuel tanks, products for grain storage and conditioning, land rollers and tillage equipment, precision planting equipment, rotary cutters and snow blowers, bulk seed tenders, sprayer and fertilizer equipment, liquid storage tanks, and the industry’s largest inventory of parts and service for Clay, Better-Bilt, Houle, Balzer and Farmstar manure handling equipment. Eastland Fabrication will continue to sell a hubs, pulleys, and sprockets, as well as replacement parts for Boss and Western snowplows, and Shur-Co tarps and accessories at its present location. It also carries

Obituaries Carolyn A. Byington
SHANNON – Carolyn A. Byington, 93, of Shannon, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Liberty Village in Freeport. She was born Oct. 7, 1921, the daughter of the late William and Laura (Moring) Nesemeier. She was a graduate of Shannon High School. Carolyn married Loral Byington on Dec. 6, 1941, in Prairie Dell; he died April 7, 2008. After their marriage, Carolyn farmed alongside her husband, and resided on the family farm. They both were members of the Flying Farmers. Carolyn was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Shannon and was active in the United Methodist Women. She loved gardening, both also enjoyed bird watching and music, especially playing the piano. Most of all, Carolyn loved
spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a very important part of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Guido) Ledergerber of Walnut; three sons, Rhett (Rebecca) Byington of Big Rock, Gene (Nancy) Byington of Lanark, and Alan Byington of Shannon; nine grandchildren, Beau (Lynn) Byington, Jarrod (Lindsay) Byington, Brenda (Pete) Holm, Ryan (Tricia) Byington, Brooke (Grant) Jamison, Ashlie (Josh) Myers, Natalie Byington, Anya (Jonathan) Barnas, Mesha (Jared Vandeventer) Ledergerber; 14 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Jan Peterson of New Port Richey, Florida; and a brother, Don (Charlotte) Nesemeier of Shannon. Carolyn also was preceeded in death by her parents, a sister, Betty Erdmier, and a brother, Stan Nesemeier. The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 3, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon. Inter-

CHADWICK — Ruby J. Kness, 90, of Chadwick, died Saturday, June 6, 2015, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. Ruby, the daughter of Melvin and Louisa (Lippolt) Bowman, was born July 19, 1924, in Mount Carroll, and attended Mount Carroll High School. Ruby married Vernon Kness on Nov. 9, 1940, in Tipton, Iowa. They spent 49 years together before Vernon’s death on Nov. 6, 1990. Besides taking care of family, Ruby was a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan Society in Mount Carroll for 7 years. Following her retirement from Elkay as a line worker after 14 years, Ruby worked night duty at the Caroline Mark Home for 17 years. Ruby was a youthful 90 who loved nothing better
than spending time with family and friends. Ruby liked to play card games, read, dine out, grow her shoe and coat collection from Bergner’s, and cook for her family. She made the best maldasha in the Midwest. Ruby will be dearly missed by her eight children, Joan (Darwin) Paddock of Sabula, Iowa, Larry (Barb) Kness of Thomson, Cynthia Fossett of Savanna, Debra (Gary) Fogle of Bettendorf, Iowa, Vernon “Bub” (Debra) Kness of Milledgeville, Norma (Mike) Brown of Marion, Dale Kness of Chadwick, and Tyra (Gregg) Hemmer of Madison, Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren, 13 stepgreat-grandchildren, and 7 step-great great-grandchildren. saving mixing time. “Ingredients will be mixed automatically instead of by hand,” he said. “It saves us time, which is better for our customers in the long run. “The new system will eliminate the grain dust for the neighborhood, and for our ag partners – the farmers.” Asche said the project is expected to be completed this summer.

LANARK – After more than 30 years in the recreational equipment business, starting with a Suzuki dealership in Freeport, Jeff Lessman and Suzuki have come full circle. Eastland Motor Sports is having a grand opening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, when it will introduce Suzuki motorcycles and ATVs. “I was service manager at a Freeport dealership, and for 2 years running we won the ‘Super Service’ award for outstanding customer service for my department,” Lessman said. “They closed over 25 years ago. There hasn’t been any Suzuki representation here in Northwest Illinois for a long time. We’re excited to build that back up.” Lessman said he opened an independent repair shop in Freeport in 1988, selling

Jeff and Patricia Lessman have owned and operated Eastland Motor Sports on state Route 64 since 2008. They have added the entire Arctic Cat line, Kimco scooters and sideby-sides, Dixie Chopper lawn mowers, Forest River trailer line, and now, the Suzuki lineup. “We are offering the whole Suzuki product line,”
Lessman said. “Everything from the fastest ‘crotch rocket’ to the fastest dirt bike, their ATVs motorcycles, everything!” Lessman said the Lanark location for Suzuki products will be the hub for Northwest Illinois and parts of eastern Iowa and southern Wisconsin. “We have a great market area. Eastland Motor Sports is not just a local company, we’re interstate. We’ve sold machines as far away as
Indiana, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin.” Lessman said they are looking for more qualipeople, but current staff has gone through retraining for Suzuki products, from computer software to the service department. “We’re up and running right now,” he said. “We’re available to order special parts, and we have integrated a shipment of products into our parts
department already. If we don’t have a certain machine you’re looking for here, we can access our locator service. And, we are 100 percent capable of doing any warranty work on any machines right now.” Lessman, who was born in Lanark and graduated from Lanark High School, said, “It’s an exciting time for our town.” He was referencing several developments underway – a new
Casey’s General Store, a new showroom for Eastland Fabrication, a telepharmacy, and several others in early stages. “I am very pleased to be able to help the community by providing jobs and added sales tax revenue,” Lessman said. “And when customers from around the area come to us, they stop and spend money in town, too. Buying gas, eating at our restaurants, it’s a good thing all around.”

Community fundraiser means good food
By GLORIA YODER Last week, our church joined together in preparing an Amish meal that was to be served at the community hall in the town of Robinson, Illinois. Several times each year, we do this as a fundraiser for our parochial school or to help pay hospital bills. These suppers are a highlight for all of us.
The meal is planned by the school board, then the ladies are assigned to prepare a certain dish. This time I was asked to make pecan pies. My husband, Daniel, was delighted. He knows that I never bake pies without making his favorite kind, apricot! I will share my recipe for that in a future column. We generally aim to have enough food for 250-300 people. We have a full course Amish meal. This time, the meal consisted of mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, noodles, grilled chicken, ham, tossed salad with homemade dressing, and four kinds of fresh bread with homemade apple butter and peanut butter spread. And for the dessert? Mmmm, it just hit the spot. We weren’t lacking,
with six kinds of pie and ice cream. In all, it took 55 pies, which included pecan, lemon, and several different fruit pies. I chose to eat lemon pie – one of my favorites. It’s always a refreshing treat. Supper is served from 7 to 8 p.m. Upon arriving, each guest makes a free will donation. Then they go into the with items of their choice. The Amish youth and youth leaders are also there to help serve the meal. Before I was married, that was something I always anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed. I love the interaction with the people who come to our suppers. Yes, it does take lots of planning, organizing, and hard work. Yet it’s well worth it. It also gives us the

Several times throughout the evening, some of the youth or whoever isn’t needed with serving gather in a little group on the side and sing several songs for those in attendance. I love being there. From listening to the songs (or sometimes helping the singers) to eating the scrumptious meal, or chatting with friends, it’s all great. By the end of the evening, everyone is ready to have the last dirty dishes cleaned, dried, and packed away. It can be quite taxing, but many hands make work light. Are you also hungry for a

2015 NOXIOUS WEED PUBLIC NOTICE CARROLL COUNTY, IL Notice is hereby given, pursuant to the ILLINOIS NOXIOUS WEED LAW Title 8, Chapter 1 Sub.f PART 220, that all owners, occupants, agents or other parties in charge or in control of any land within Carroll County’s jurisdiction are responsible for the control and eradication of all NOXIOUS WEEDS growing upon their land. As part of this act NOXIOUS WEEDS are to include: Ragweed, Musk-thistle, Canadian Thistle, Sow-Thistle, Sorghum Almum, Marijuana and Johnson Grass. If persons responsible for the control of any lands fail to comply with the provisions of the law a control authority of the county or a representative of IL State Department of Agriculture will take the action to enforce the provisions upon such land and the responsible persons.
