Letters and Commentary For the Love of Art
The Eastland Jr/Sr High School art collection is now on display at the showcased for the “Night of Possibilities� and will continue to be on display until June 21st. Thanks to John Warner for making and donating the display shelf, Dave Peterson for his donation of labor for installation, Jean Matheson (Eastland Art instructor) for having the skills to instill the love of art with the Jr/Sr High Eastland students, and hopefully giving them a lifelong passion for creativity. What a joy it is to see students bring their parents and grandparents into the new Municipal Building/Library Complex to show off their art work. I would be remiss not to mention that this partnership between Eastland and LPL began with Sue Lamoreux (active Friends of the Lanark Library member and school teacher) visualizing art on the library walls. The library board immediately liked the concept of more parents visiting the library with

does noise level become obnoxious? Sometimes I can hear a motorcycle all the way to the north entrance of the Palisades Park. I’m over 3 miles from the entrance so I don’t understand how that is right. If my truck was at that level, I would be pulled over and ticketed. I’m not sure why this is being tolerated. Revenue is not the most important thing for our county. Another fact is that motorcycle riders join groups. Those groups wear colors distinguishing themselves from the others. When people create groups like “Brothers Club� off of Doty Road, it makes me wonder what is happening and what direction is our county going. The more lenient we are the more problems we are going to have in the future. I would like to discuss an ordinance for decibel level and actually do out a solution that works for everyone living and visiting our community. We can’t have visitors who create their own rules based purely on their numbers. There are numerous examples
on the news across the nation exposing ing, injuries, and deaths that have taken place because of road rage between motorcycles and automobile drivers. Why do Carroll County citizens have to fear going to Savanna wondering when that same situation is going to happen to them? When does Savanna or Mt. One Man’s Opinion I so admire the lady Condoleezza Rice – Educator, Diplomat, Former Secretary of State, an exceptional person in every sense of the word. As children we all have our heroes. As adults, perhaps it’s more

Of course my parents instilled in me many of life’s values. Several teachers come to mind as do my military days as people who positively affected my life. In the broader picture of those on the world stage that I believe have positively affected many, Henry Ford comes to mind as the father of the assembly line. Mother Teresa and her never ending work with those less fortunate. I could go on and on with Thomas Edison, President John Kennedy, Gandhi and so many others. We all have reasons for those we respect. Then there is the sting when someone we admire is shunned. Such is the case when several weeks ago Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was invited to give the commencement address at Rutgers University, the State University of in this institution of higher learning decided that she was less than desirable. I personally was shocked and angered. Dr. Rice decided it better to step aside than create more controversy.

The controversy centered on her service as National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush and her “destruction in Iraq at the hands of the Bush Administration”, this according to Faculty Council Member Robert Boikess who presented and moved for adoption of a resolution in opposition to Dr. Rice as commencement speaker. Dr. Rice wrote, “I am honored to have served my country, I have defended America’s belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas. These values are essential to the health of our democracy. But that is not what is at issue here. As a professor for thirty years at Stanford University and as its former provost stand and embrace the purpose of the commencement ceremony and I am simply unwilling to detract from it in any way.” Not many do I hold in higher esteem than this gifted public servant. When we bow to the wishes of a few radicals, especially at such a highly regarded educational institution it saddens me greatly. In fairness to the administration at Rutgers, their invitation stood. The few radical punks and professors got their way. Free speech and the majority lost out. I understand and respect Dr. Rice’s decision. What is so disappointing is the opportunity lost to so many to hear words of wisdom from such a brilliant icon who has shared the world’s stage. The left loves free speech as long as it’s theirs.

Savanna Moves Ahead With Demolition of Dilapidated Buildings MICHAEL MILLER For The Prairie Advocate News SAVANNA — The Savanna City Council took action to demolish several dilapidated properties in the City, continuing the ongoing effort to beautify the City and enforce ordinance code violations, at the May 27, 2014 meeting of the Council at 333 Chicago Avenue. The meeting was attended by Council members Bill Robinson, Jeff Griswold, Peg Haffey, Ray Skiles, Gary Scott Law, Christine Lee, and Bill Sweeney with Lisa Robinson absent. Mayor Tony McCombie also attended, as well as City Clerk Paul Hartman, City Attorney Phil Jensen,
and department heads Michael Moon, Sheryl Sipe and John Lindeman, with Fire Chief Shawn Picolotti absent. Committee Reports Robinson once again said that he felt negotiations were going along quite well in the Collective Bargaining Committee, though because of the ongoing and private nature of the discussions he could not reveal much more. Law told the Council that seven properties (126th 4th Street, 111 Milwaukee, 29 4th Street, 123 Hill Street, 332 Oak Street, 4 Elm and 608 Cooley Avenue) were slated to be demolished because of poor conditions, and that three bids were
received for this work. McCombie explained that the City asked for bids for demolition, disposal and restoration, with the Building and Public Property Committee’s recommendation to go with Colgan Excavating for this work. The mayor noted that the owner of 4 Elm had expressed that he plans to contest the City’s demolition of that property. She also said that while $35,000.00 had been budgeted for this project, and the total quoted by Colgan was over this at $42,350.00, the City did have an additional $10,000.00 from it’s reimbursement program. The Council fully approved Law’s motion to go with Colgan for the quoted amount for all seven buildings. Law reported that the property watch list currently includes homes at 1722 Michigan Avenue, 1137 Chicago Avenue, the Chestnut Park School, 613 Broderick Drive and 620 Viaduct Road, with 35/37 4th Street being added. In addition, seven homes have been added to the FEMA list for acquisition due to several years. Chairperson Haffey highlighted the most recent Personnel/Ordinance/ Public Relations committee report. West Carroll Announces New Teachers, Administrators, Support Staff; Honors Retirees MICHAEL MILLER For The Prairie Advocate News The West Carroll School District has hired a number of new teachers, administrators and support staff for the 2014-2015 school year, as well as announcing a number of retirements and recognitions of service. Adam Brumbaugh has been hired as West Carroll High School Principal. Brumbaugh is a 2002 graduate of Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and a 2007 graduate of Western with a Masters in Educational Leadership. He is currently working on his Educational Specialist - Superintendent endorsement. Brumbaugh taught at Cambridge High School from 2004 to 2006 as a math teacher, and again as a math teacher at Camp Point Central from 2006 to 2009. He has coached varsity athletics in Track, Golf and Basketball. He was Principal of Keokuk Christian Academy for four year, and is a First Lieutenant in the Illinois National Guard. Adam, his wife, Heidi and their four children will be relocating to the district, and his starting salary
on July 1st. Abigail Bradbury has been hired as a West Carroll Science Teacher. Ms. Bradbury is currently teaching at West Carroll in a long term substitute agreement. She has been a resident of Savanna since 2013, and has taught at many laboratories as an assistant, as well as working for two years as an adjunct professor at Ellsworth Community College. She has a 2004 Bachelor’s of Science degree from Western Illinois, and is currently working on her Masters of Science at the same school. In August 2014 she will

Barb Cederholm will serve as district Superintendent’s Secretary. She has 19 years experience as a K-12 building secretary for Forestville Valley, C.U.S.D #221, as well as one year as Superintendent’s Secretary at the same school. She has experience in all Microsoft programs, as well as Skyward, IWAS, trainer of new district employees and registration manuals, BoardBook, electronic Board Policy manuals, iPads and student information manuals. Andresen Memorial Scholarships Awarded Every year since 1985, Harold and Kay Andresen of rural Chadwick have awarded Randy and Rodney Andresen Memorial scholarships to graduating seniors at Chadwick and Milledgeville High Schools. Even though they were afflicted with muscular dystrophy they still managed to attend school and graduate with honors in 1979 and ‘80. They worked hard, rarely complained and were an inspiration to their families, friends, and classmates. The last few years the family has decided to include all the high schools in Carroll County with a $1,000 Andresen Memorial Scholarship to each graduating senior student that applies from the 3 high schools in the county. The scholarships are
primarily based on the need of the student. Other things considered are scholastic ability, moral character, leadership qualities and community involvement. This year in 2014 there were 18 memorial scholarships awarded. From Milledgeville HS they were: Morgan Adolph, Samantha Feltenz, Alexandra Fink, Emily Geison, Shannon Graff, Ryan Habben, Lauren Hackbarth, Haley McAuliffe, and Kayleigh Leddy. From Eastland High School were: Korina Freidag, Jacob Gilman, Devin Hartman, Megan Janssen, and Austin Weaver. Lumberjack Festival Featured at Sawmill Museum On June 7, world class lumberjacks meet family fun at The Sawmill Museum in Clinton, Iowa. This will be the 4th annual Lumberjack Festival for The Sawmill, and the festival is a perfect mix of family fun and a professional sporting event. This year the museum has really focused on expanding the activities for children so there is a full schedule between 11a.m. and 6 p.m. With the main gate at Main Avenue & Grant Street opening at 11, the fun begins at 11:30. From 11:3012:30, visitors can battle one other in real log rolling in the Lumberjack Camp. A professional logroller will help you and a partner get on a log water. It’s up to you to see who wins. From 11:30 to 5 p.m., the Kid’s Zone will be open. The Zone will of carnival games, and a slingshot range hosted by the Boy Scouts. In addition to the kid’s activities, there will be antique tractors and a chainsaw artist on display as well. Finally, from 12 noon to 3 p.m., there will be pony rides. At 1 p.m., the main attraction begins when for the next 5 hours, 30-40 of the best lumberjacks and
jills compete in a series of heats. Then throughout the competition, the professional logrollers will demonstrate their skill. The various events will range from springboard to hotsaw. All are timed, and the lumberjacks are competing for both title and money prize. Throughout the entire event, there will be emcee explaining to the audience the different events and calling the event. The best part is all of these events are included in the price of admission. Tickets are $5 per person if bought before June 7 and $6 at the gate. You can buy tickets online or at the museum, Clinton National Bank, Citizens First Bank, or Turner Electric. Throughout the day there will be food vendors and the Jaycee’s Beer Tent at the Festival as well. In addition to the Festival, the museum will be open for regular admission, and it too has a slat of activities. From noon to 5, the International Wood Turners will be “turning” wood into fun keepsakes. Also at that time, the museum’s sawyers will be performing live sawings on the hour for 15-20 minutes. June 7 will also be the

Bivins: School Funding Rewrite A controversial rewrite of the state’s system of funding schools would dramatically cut state aid to many local schools in the 45th Senate District, according to State Sen. Tim Bivins (R-Dixon). Passed by a 32-19-6 vote of the Senate May 27, Senate Bill 16 would cut state funding for 20 local school districts and increase state funding for 22 other local school districts, for a net overall state funding gain of $3,702,203. Kanosky came to HCC in 1981 and has held a variety of positions in the areas of student services, instructional program administration, community service and economic development. He has been a Director, an Associate Dean, and a Dean. He served as Vice President for Student and Community Services from 2000 to 2003 and Vice President for Institutional and Community Development from 2003 until November of 2005. “The Board of Trustees was made aware of Dr. Kanosky’s plans to retire three years ago when his current contract was amended,� said current Board Chair Doug Block. “I think that I can speak for the entire Board of Trustees in saying that we have been very pleased with Dr. Kanosky’s leadership throughout his time as President. The College has accomplished much and is positioned to continue to build on its strengths.� Highland has seen several lasting accomplishments under President Kanosky’s leadership, most notably, the construction of two state-of-theart training facilities — the Ray and Betty Stamm Health Science Nursing Wing and the Wind Turbine Technician Training Center. The nursing wing provides 13,500 square feet of much-needed high-tech lab and classroom space for the Nursing andAllied program, while the Wind
Turbine Technician Training Center serves as a dedicated facility for the Turbine Technician degree. In 2012, a modern 1,500 square foot greenhouse was constructed off of the south side of the Natural Science and Health Center, replacing an outdated and cramped facility that was no longer serving the needs students in the natural sciences. President Kanosky oversaw the College’s successful transition to the Academic Quality Improvement program (AQIP) model of accreditation and two Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) recognition evaluations, maintaining the College’s continued high recognition status. In 2012, Highland received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer its associate of arts degree completely through online coursework. During Kanosky’s tenure, a number of new academic programs were initiated, such as the Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Industrial Training and Wind Turbine Technician degrees, as well as Customer Service and Professional
service includes being on the board of directors of the FreeportArea Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Illinois Development Alliance. On the State level, Kanosky is a member of the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents and currently co-chairs their Leadership and Core Values Committee, a position he has held for several years. He has also presented at the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators conference on several occasions, sharing his expertise on leadership and core values. By LOVINA EICHER The sun is shining this afternoon. We had a thunderstorm early this morning. The rain kept us out of the garden today. Last night Joe and the children helped get more garden planted. We didn’t get finished yet so hopefully it’ll dry up soon. Our soil is very sandy and dries fast so that helps. We now have planted onions, radishes, lettuce, peas, potatoes, red beets, green beans, cucumbers, corn,
sweet peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, banana and hot peppers. Need to plant more corn, watermelon, zucchini and more potatoes yet. So far we have potatoes, peas, radishes, onions, lettuce and corn coming up. Everything is late this year. The boys were mowing our grass for the second time this year. Usually it would have had to be a mowed a lot sooner. Daughter Lovina had a very happy 10th birthday on Sunday. We attended church during the day. In the evening we went to Jacob and Emma’s house for fried and grilled mushrooms. They had an abundance of mushrooms. Also on the menu was grilled ham, asparagus casserole, sliced tomatoes, cheese, watermelon, chocolate cake and ice cream. Tomorrow, May 22, I will turn another year older. 43 years. Sounds old and makes you dread to see your age get higher up there. Jacob, Emma,and family and sisters Verena and Susan and our daughters friends Timothy and Mose will come tomorrow evening in honor of my birthday.
School doors will be closing soon, two more weeks left after this week. Next week will only be three days of school for our children as of Memorial Day and Ascension Day (Thursday, May 29). Son Benjamin ‘s 8th grade graduation will be on June 4th. He will be finished with his school years this term. Daughter Loretta will only have one more year of schooling. Our ramp is now finished and Loretta sure is glad to not have to take steps to get into the house. It will also be nice for the older people when we host church services. Daughter Elizabeth and Susan are on 4 day work weeks now for awhile. I enjoy having them home on Fridays. They have some dresses they need to get sewed for parts in upcoming weddings. This will give them more time to get them done. Sunday afternoon we stopped in at Timothy’s house to see all his horses’s baby foals. They look so lively out in the field. While we were there we also visited with his next door neighbor, Janice. She was out in the yard in a wheel chair. She has had some health complications. It was nice to get to visit with her again.
