Route 40 closed from Milledgeville to Chadwick
Eastland Board of Education reorganizes
MILLEDGEVILLE – State Route 40 west of Milledgeville is closed until the end of September, while the bridge over Otter Creek is being replaced, the Illinois Department of Transportation said in a news release.
LANARK — Reelected school board members Lorrie Heeren and Karl Henze and newly elected members Diann Cassens and Brian Heldt took their seats at a special Eastland school board reorganization meeting. Superintendent Mark Hansen administered the
Route 40 at Milledgeville north on Shannon Road to state Route 64, and then west on Route 64 to state Route 78 at Mount Carroll. In addition, a road improvement project that started April 13 will repair 8 miles of Route 40 from First Street in Chadwick to Stover Avenue in Milledgeville. The board hired Chelsea Anderson as fourth-grade teacher and Joslynn teacher for the 2015-16 school year. Maternity leave for media specialist Erin Paulsen was approved, projected to start Oct. 13 and end Dec. 22. Sixthgrade teacher Rebecca Roethe’s maternity leave, projected to start Oct. 21 and conclude Dec. 2, also was approved. The board agreed to continue posting vacancies for substitute custodians, substitute bus drivers, yearbook adviser, head girls basketball coach, and assistant speech team adviser.

Local man arrested after high-speed chase Police: Traffic stop of former Chadwick man in Freeport results in gunfire, pursuit through 4 counties By CHRISTI WARREN For Prairie Advocate MENDOTA – A former Chadwick man was in LaSalle County Jail on Monday on more than $125,000 bond after, police said, he pulled a gun on a Freeport police Sunday morning. According to Illinois State in Freeport around 9 a.m., Alec T. Pulley, 29, pulled
triggering “a high-speed chase” that lasted more than an hour and went through Stephenson, Winnebago, Ogle, and LaSalle counties, Illinois State Police said in a news release. Pulley was arrested after crashing his car into the median on Interstate 39 in Mendota; a handgun was recovered at the scene, the release said. He was treated at OSF Saint Paul Medical Center
in Mendota, then taken to the jail in Ottawa. He was set to be transferred to Stephenson Alec T. County Jail. Resolution honors Powell brothers
SPRINGFIELD – As lawmakers continued working during the week toward a scheduled May 31 adjournment of the General Assembly, the Illinois Supreme Court delivered a unanimous opinion Friday striking down large parts of the 2013 pension reform bill. The irresponsible decisions by past legislative leaders to skip the state’s public pension payments year after year have left us with a debt that is staggering and continues to use resources going forward. that the 2013 plan was unconstitutional, as the Illinois Constitution is quite diminishments. I do, however, recognize the fact that the Supreme Court decision places additional pressure on the state’s budget, so we need to get down to reform options.

A resolution honoring the seven Powell brothers from Greene County, all of whom served in World War II, unanimously passed the Senate Friday. Senate Joint Resolution 2 names a section of state Route 67 through Greene County the “Powell Brothers Memorial Highway.” The seven brothers were scattered throughout the Western European, Russian, and Japanese theaters of combat. Arthur, Earl, Fred, and George served in the Navy. Adrian, Everett, and Max served in the Army Air Corps, the predecessor to the modern Air Force. Everett was shot down in his P-47 Thunderbolt over Belgium, and was held in a German prisoner of war camp for 18 months. All seven survived and returned home after the war. They were commended by the United States Senate in May 2014. The family’s hometown of Hillview in their honor in 1988. SJR 2 now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.
Halting expansion of taxing bodies?
State Sens. Michael Connelly, R-Wheaton, and Dan Duffy, R-Lake Barrington, are leading the charge against the expansion of taxing bodies in Illinois. House Bill 228 will prevent the General Assembly from creating any new units of government or subdividing any existing ones. Illinois has units of government that focus solely on regulating things like mosquitoes, tuberculosis, museums, hospitals, exposition halls, and airports. Illinois leads the nation with 6,963-plus units of government, double the number of neighboring
states Wisconsin and Missouri. Illinois’ other three neighbors – Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa – combined have 1,000 fewer units of government. Illinois’ total is staggering when compared to California’s 4,425 and Texas’ 5,147, considering the relative size of Illinois’ population. HB 228 does not prevent two existing units of government from combining or eliminating and consolidating services into one taxing body.
Senate considers cannabis measures Legislation to extend the state’s medical cannabis pilot program and decriminalize small amounts of cannabis advanced out of Senate committees last week. Helping reduce the number of nonviolent offenders in the state’s overburdened court and correctional systems is one of the primary objectives of HB 218. The legislation would reduce penalties for possession of 15 or fewer grams of marijuana, making the offense punishable by a However, opponents point out marijuana continues to be an offense under federal law, and a number of law enforcement organizations are concerned about the impact of a provision in the bill that establishes

They’ve introduced HB 3299, which would extend the current Jan. 1, 2018, repeal date of the program, changing it to 4 years after sary organize registration; likewise, patient registry cards would be extended from 1 year from that date. Opponents say it’s too soon to extend the program, noting that at this time there is nothing to examine to see if it is worth extending. Registration for the dispensaries and cultivation centers have been issued only recently, and patients have not yet began using medical marijuana for treatment.

Free walking tour Tuesday GALENA – A free guided walking tour of the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation’s Horseshoe Mound Preserve will be offered at 1 p.m. Tuesday by JDCF staff and Jim Louderman, collections specialist with the Chicago Field Museum.
The walk will be along mowed trails over rolling terrain. Participants will learn about the geologic features that can be seen from the top of the mound, see garden, and get to know some of preserve’s the insect residents. Wood, who owns The Kitchen Garden, said she harvested 6 pounds of spinach this week that was used in several menu items at Molly’s. “My goal is to be able to base my menu totally on locally-grown produce, year-round,” McDonough said. “Our goal is to support Molly,” Larsen said. Veggie info, recipes to be presented at farmers markets MOUNT CARROLL — Master Gardeners in Carroll and Whiteside counties will spend the summer attending local farmers markets, sharing their knowledge about growing and preparing vegetables. Kale will be the topic Saturday at the markets in Mount Carroll and Sterling; and on May 22 at the Morrison market. Recipe cards will be handed out.
Swiss chard, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts and squash will be future topics, at Twin City market in Sterling the third Saturday of the month at at Morrison the fourth Saturday of the month. Presentation dates for the Mount Carroll and Lanark farmers markets will be announced. Lanark’s Farmers Market is held Tuesdays from June 2 to Oct. 27 in Lanark City Park. Some sites will have samples of the recipe available to try.

Obituaries Donna J. Friestad
ROCHELLE — Donna J. Friestad, 66, of Rochelle, formerly of Lanark, passed away on May 2. 2015, in Rochelle. Donna was born on July 4, 1948, the daughter of James and Dorothy (Sunbom) Schomer. She married James Friestad on Nov. 15, 1969, in Mount Carroll. Survivors include her husband, James; three sisters, Christine Rice of Thomson, Maxine Lufkin of Mount Carroll and Kathleen Peters of Fulton; adopted daughter, Barbara Aleman of Rochelle; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Schomer, grandson Gustovo, brother-in-law Larry Lufkin and Martha McClurg. Funeral services were held at the First General Baptist Church in Rochelle with the Rev. Angelo Bonacquisti
Raymond ‘Mac’ McFadden
SAVANNA — Raymond “Mac” McFadden, 93, of Savanna, died Sunday, May 3, 2015, at his home. A graveside service with full military rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Center Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:30 a.m. at the Savanna Moose Lodge, 125 Main St.
Raymond was born Dec. 22, 1921, to Maurice and Elsie (Schmidt) McFadden in Savanna. He attended Savanna High School and graduated with the Class of 1939. In 1942, Raymond joined the Army Air Corps and proudly served his country as a sergeant until 1946. On Sept. 28, 1953, he married the love of his life, Lucille Hartman, in Savanna. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before her death on June 25, 2009, and there wasn’t a day that went by that he couldn’t wait to be with her again. Raymond was a lifetime farmer who worked in the Savanna area for many years. His life centered around the farm. He also worked at the Savanna Army Depot and the retirement. He enjoyed reading, cutting wood, and being outside, cherishing every moment he spent on the farmstead. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, who will surely miss his great sense of humor. He never hesitated to tell anyone that he was “the luckiest man” to have such a beautiful and wonderful family. Raymond will be dearly missed by a daughter, Lois (Bernard) Hartman of Lanark; 11 grandchildren, Ron Hartman, Jerry (Sheila) Hartman, Cathy Corey, Colleen Terry, Tom Hartman, Jim (Glenda) Moore, Peggy (Bill) Brown, Patty Jo Derrickson, Mike (Darci) Hartman, Raylene Moore, Lavonne (Scott) Sturtevant; 20 great-grandchildren; 33

“Faith is a very talented and gifted young lady,” Robbins said. “ She also plays clarinet and reads and writes music. Faith can usually memorize her music within a few days, so she does not need sheet music to perform. She performed the National Anthem at opening ceremonies quite beautifully, in front of close to ten thousand people, with news cameras aimed at her.” Faith is a talented athlete, as well. She won a gold medal for the softball throw and a silver medal for the 50 meter run, which at State Special Olympics June 12-14 in Bloomington.

Tips to preventing foodborne illness LANARK — It doesn’t happen very often, but recent news on the botulism outbreak at a church potluck in Lancaster, Ohio, has shed light that foodborne illness still remains a concern. No matter the size of a city or an event where there is food, there is the potential risk of foodborne illness if not prepared properly. The likely cause of the foodborne botulism outbreak as potato salad made with home-canned potatoes. Home food preservation has become a growing trend over the past few years motivated by the local foods movement and rising food costs. How popular has it become? The Center for Disease Control reports that
1 in 5 U.S. households are canning their own foods, with a reported 65 percent canning vegetables. “It’s great to see so many people getting into home food preservation,” said University of Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator and registered dietitian Diane Reinhold. “However, it is critical that everyone has a good understanding of safe and up-to-date food preservation practices.” Botulism, which is caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and other foodborne related illnesses remain a concern not only for food manufacturing facilities, but also for those who preserve their own food. According to the CDC, the most common cause of foodborne botulism
outbreaks in the United States occur from homecanned vegetables. In a 12-year period between 1996 and 2008, there were only 48 foodborne botulism outbreaks reported that were
caused by home-prepared foods — four per year nationwide. Eighteen of those outbreaks were due to home-canned vegetables. TIPS CONTINUED ON A22

On or about July 8, 2015, the Village of Shannon intends to apply to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for a grant from the State Community Development Block Grand (CDBG) program. This program is funded by Title I of the federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended. These funds are to be used for a community development project that will include the following activities: Village-wide water system improvements including replacement of water main and hydrants and installation of water meters to eliminate threats to the health and safety of the Village’s residents. The total amount of CDBG funds to be requested is $450,000. The amount of CDBG funds proposed to be used for activities that will benefit low-to-moderate income persons is at least $229,500.
