Church hosts Awana Grand Prix and Baking Contest BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate
Can a handmade, wooden car transport someone into the kingdom of Jesus Christ? Maybe, but the little cars certainly opened the doors of opportunity and brought the lifechanging message of the gospel Saturday, when the Shannon Baptist Church held its annual Awana Grand Prix and Baking Contest. The Awana Grand Prix is a PinewoodDerby-style racing event with a more-than45-year track record of fun and excitement. Awana club members create their own Grand Prix race cars from kits of a block of wood and a set of wheels and axles. They then go head-to-head with other clubbers’ cars on race day. The top designs and fastest cars receive special awards, while all competing clubbers earn a participation ribbon. Parents can’t resist a fun event that involves their children – and a little woodworking. Most importantly, the event is an opportunity to sow the seeds of good news

Obituaries Merl L. Ludwig
CHADWICK — Merl Leslie Ludwig, 66, of Chadwick, died unexpectedly at home on Thursday, April 7, 2016. Merl was born Aug. 29, 1949, in Dixon, the son of Melvin and Barbara (Grover) Ludwig. He married Roslyn Dyer on April 28, 1984, in Chadwick. Merl worked as a driller and blaster for Kasbohm Custom Drilling until he retired in 2013. He was a United States Army veteran, serving in the War in Vietnam. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, especially his roses, cutting wood with his
son-in-law, and hunting. He was survived by his wife, Roslyn; one brother, Nels Ludwig; one son, Anthony (Brittany) Ludwig; one daughter, Alicia (Ludwig) Moore; four stepdaughters, Lisa (Mathew) Montgomery, Jody (Mark) Sack, Nicole (Karl) Popkin and Christina (Larry) Bates; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. No services will be held. Cremation rites have been accorded with the McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Milledgeville. MILLEDGEVILLE — Alfred C. Hinrichs, 96, of Milledgeville, died Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at his home. Alfred was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Sterling, the son of Henry and Mathilda (Folkers) Hinrichs. He married

The early bird getting the worm isn’t always a good thing, especially when it comes to rushing into a decision that could affect city residents. Just ask the Lanark City Council. Its members are considering a resident’s request to allow people to own chickens inside the city limits. The pros? Amending the city ordinance to allow chickens could have more The cons? Allowing chickens now could open a can of worms later. And then there’s the noise. Cocka-doodle-doo at the crack of dawn is all well and good for people who want to get

Horse-feathers, says Nick Pontnack, who lobbied the council at its meeting March 29 for support in amending a city ordinance that keeps chickens out of the city limits. “There are dogs in town that bark all day and night,” he said. “If a chicken clucks, neighbors may hear it, but probably not. To a lot of people, they are not just chickens; they are more like pets.” Pontnack wants the city to amend Section 5-1-12-A of the Lanark City Code, which has restrictions on keeping livestock, including chickens, within city limits. He and his wife, Ariel, and

Alderman Mark Macomber said amending the ordinance could open another can of worms. “Dogs and cats are traditional pets, but your pet falls into alternative pets,” Macomber told Pontnack.

A business owner in Mount Carroll wants people to have a moment of zen – in fact, the more moments they have, the better. “I believe in positivity and helping others believe in themselves” said Heather Houzenga, owner of the Imaginarium. “I believe that when you do good, good will come of it.” Houzenga is living by those words, and she’s been doing some good things for Mount Carroll. She’s opened an art studio for not only her work, but for other artists as well; teaches classes; and runs a business out of her home that has a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and everything funky in between. And that’s just the tip of the inspirational iceberg. Houzenga, 36, of Savanna, opened the studio 6 years ago, and since then, she and her little studio have made a big impact on community. She said she’s “created a more urban environment than what this area is used to,” so coming into her of mood for locals.

Blue Iris offers treasure trove of unique, handmade crafts

Walk in, and you just might mistake Treasures of the Blue Iris for a thrift shop. Take a closer look, though, and you’ll realize the store is a repository of unique and beautiful hand-crafted items, all one-of-a-kind and exquisitely detailed. For instance, down the center aisle is a display of baby dolls in cradles that look and feel like real infants. They’re hand-colored, with individual lashes and tufts of about 5 pounds or so, and are so realistic they are also used with Alzheimer’s patients and dementia patients as therapy dolls, and in high school family-living classes. Similar dolls can sell for $1,500 to $12,000, if online prices are to be believed, but the Blue Iris’ “reborn dolls,” crafted by artist and owner Leslie Landheer, sell for $300, complete with a set of clothes. Blue Iris is owned and operated by the Scott family: Dan Scott, his wife, Landheer, his sister Debbie Scott, and his mother Marilyn Scott, all contribute their individual skills. “Debbie works mostly behind the scenes helping

It’s not every granddaughter who can say their grandpa was a cowboy, but Milledgeville native Peggy Miller can – though he was no ordinary cowboy. His steed was a boat and he wore a lifejacket instead of a vest as he rode across the ocean to help people in nations devastated by war. Today, Miller’s grandfather, Abe, is the inspiration for a children’s book published March 31, “The Seagoing Cowboy.” Miller’s seagoing journey began in 1969, after the death of her grandfather. Her father gave her some photos of Abe’s 1946 trip to Poland. He was among the men and boys recruited by the The Church of Bretheren who volunteered after World War II to tend the livestock shipped by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration to war-torn countries. As Miller writes on her book’s website, “they were students and farmers, bankers and preachers, laborers and teachers.” While she knew of the seagoing cowboys, she had never heard her grandfather’s story and she wanted to know more. history away in the back of her mind, knowing it would someday make good fodder for a book. She has been researching, writing and speaking about the seagoing cowboys since 2002, and has accumulated information through interviews, questionnaires, diary accounts, photos and
movies of their trips. She said when she gets done with her writing projects, she’ll donate the wealth of information she’s accumulated to the Brethren Historical Library and Archives. In addition to her interest for seagoing cowboys, Miller has always had an interest in writing children’s books. “I’ve been interested in writing for children ever since my twin daughters were little,” Miller said. McFadden said the book is selling pretty well so far. “We started publicizing the book last year to the congregation of the Church of the Brethren,” McFadden said. “We also sent information to hundreds of seagoing cowboys. They appreciate the work she does.” “Like my grandfather, many seagoing cowboys never talked about their experience with their grandchildren,” Miller said. “With this book, I wanted to give families a tool to share the story with the younger generation. It’s a story of how people helped to repair a broken world after a major war.”

Members of the West Carroll chapter of Highland Community College Servant Leadership participated in the seventh annual Hearts and Hands for Hunger OneMeal event Friday and Saturday at the HCC student conference center.
Students from West Carroll were among 13 area high schools, representing more than 150 students who participate in the Servant Leadership program, continuing the campaign to help feed hungry children. Highland Servant Leadership partners with Kids Around the World from Rockford, an
organization that brings the materials and supplies that are needed to package the meals. The past 6 years, Servant Leaders have provided 400,705 meals for children in need locally and around the world. “It is a great hands-on way to get people directly involved in the process of

feeding starving children all over the world,” HCC Servant Leadership Coordinator Kim Pool said. “Kids Around the World ships and distributes the meals to partners on the ground in countries to assure the meals get to the children. Guest speaker Demetrius Amparan, a teaching artist, HBO featured rapper, poet and performer from Young Chicago Authors, will lead the spoken word poetry workshop at 2:30 p.m. April 19 in the Student Conference Center in room H-201. Rotary Club to send students to Leadership Camp Prairie Advocate staff
The Morrison Rotary Club is sponsoring nine Morrison High School sophomores who will attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp in May. The students are Samantha Makl, Mackenzie Stoecker, Madison Steines and Morgan Stuhlman, Kaleb McCoy, Isaac Damhoff, Grant Abell, Derek Bush and Grant Slater, who all applied to attend. Allyssa Renner, a past RYLA camper from Morrison, will be assisting at the camp as a counselor/volunteer. The camp is at the Lorado
Taft Campus of Northern Illinois University in Oregon. At RYLA, students will improve their leadership skills as they work together in teams while meeting other students from northern Illinois. “Lasting friendships are built during this time,” said Louise Clark, Morrison Rotary president. “This camp has had an amazing effect on past student attendees. In fact, all six of last year’s students campers and one as a counselor. Other students who have attended RYLA

in the past have gone on to become outgoing leaders in all that they do.” The camp is staffed by Rotarians who volunteer their time to provide a safe, positive atmosphere for the students. About 120 students attend the annual camp. “The Morrison Rotary Club, which organizes the Harvest Hammer 5K Race and Duathlon, uses a great deal of its proceeds from the race to send students to RYLA and to provide scholarships for Morrison High School seniors every spring,” said Clark.
