SHANNON – Ken Groezinger is a drive-by shooter, but he is far from dangerous - unless you don’t like your photo taken. His tool of the trade is a camera. “For my birthday one year, the girls I worked with gave me a camera strap with bicycles on it, and the words, ‘Drive-by Shooter,’” he said with a laugh. “The last 4 years, I was working up north in Minocqua (Wisconsin), and there are such beautiful sunrises and sunsets, albino deer, and all kinds of beautiful things to photograph,” Groezinger said. “One of the girls I worked with gave me a photo book by a taxi driver in New York, called “The Drive-by Shooter,” because he took most of his pictures out of his cab window. I take most of my photos from my vehicle, too.” “Vehicle” also means his bicycle. Groezinger is an avid bicyclist. He’s traveled across Iowa 23 times in the world-famous Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, RAGBRAI. He also enjoys traveling all over Carroll County and northwestern Illinois on two wheels, taking as many back roads as possible, but does ride quite a bit from Savanna to Fulton on the Great River Road bike trail. Retired for more than a year, Groezinger, 68, inherited his interest in photography from his father and uncle, who shot a lot of 35mm photos back in “I got hooked on taking pictures at a young age. He thinks his advantage comes from his love of nature and his perspective. “I’m a bit limited for scenery,” he said. “I get up early for sunrise, and in the evening for sunset photos. There aren’t too many different vantage points, so I try to be creative with what I have, like cemeteries, unusual trees, and the like. But it is a beautiful area.” Over the years, Groezinger has developed an eye for the great outdoors, and is known for his stunning photos of sunrises and sunsets. City set to submit disaster plan to FEMA County initiative gives cities an edge for grants

MORRISON – First Ward Alderman Michael Blean has resigned from the City Council because he is moving outside the city limits. Blean, who has a realty and appraisal business in Morrison, was serving his second term on the council. He ran unopposed in 2011, and was re-elected to a 4-year term in April 2015. His resignation is effective March 25. Blean said he will continue to serve on the boards of the Morrison Area Development Corp. and the Whiteside County Juvenile Justice Council.
MORRISON – The city is planning for the worst, and hoping for the best. The worst: Natural disasters. The best: The city gets grant money that could of disasters, saving both lives and money. Morrison is preparing to send a hazard mitigation plan to a federal agency that could open the door to grant opportunities for projects on the list. The city is one of several towns to participate in devising the Whiteside County Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan, an initiative that started in July 2014 and is designed to identify and prioritize projects that could protect residents and their property in nine types of natural disasters. The county received a grant to formulate the plan, and a planning committee was formed, made up of area hospitals, emergency responders, Whiteside County Farm Bureau, and representatives of several other organizations. Cities that send hazard mitigation plan resolutions to the Federal Emergency Management Agency have better chances of receiving grants for the listed projects.

As with any board experience, there have been highs and lows, Blean said. While he’d rather not dwell on the lows, one accomplishment easily comes to mind. “Finding a site for the new wastewater treatment plant, and watching construction begin has been exciting,” Blean said. “This is a huge step forward for the city.” Mayor Everett Pannier said he hated to see Blean leave the council. “He’s always been an excellent member,
that we received a grant to start that work, and we will send it out for bids soon,” Barry Dykhuizen Dykhuizen said. The $318,000 federal grant is administered through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The city must provide a $100,000 match. “That work is ongoing, and will be done in phases, but it gets us off to a good start,” Dykhuizen said. Obituaries Letters and Commentary Sheldon C. Moll
SHANNON — Sheldon C. Moll, 90, of Shannon, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Cherry Grove Township; the son of the late Charles and Ethel (Rahn) Moll. When he was young, he attended country schools, witnessed the introduction of electricity to rural areas, and the transfer of horse-drawn to modern farming equipment. He was a 1943 graduate of Shannon High School. On Oct. 22, 1950, Sheldon married Elizabeth “Bette” Green in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a lifelong dairy and livestock farmer, and sold milk to Kraft for nearly 40 years. He was a member of Farm Bureau and of Bethel United Methodist Church of Shannon. He loved horses and was a member of various horse and pony associations in his younger years. Sheldon was known for his unmistakeable laugh, and enjoyed visiting. He was a deeply devoted father and grandfather. He was always active in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was involved in 4-H as a project leader with his children, and never missed one of his granddaughter’s sporting events.

Here at the Answer Fitness & Health, we get questions occasionally about the effect of alcohol on weight gain. While an occasional glass of wine is pretty safe and actually healthy, regular alcohol consumption does result in some weight gain. But why does this happen? First, alcohol affects certain hormones in your body. Alcohol can increase “insulin resistance” causing a blood sugar to rise and fall, altering your metabolism. “Growth hormone,” which is important for maintaining muscle mass is suppressed by alcohol consumption resulting in less lean body mass. Finally, the stress hormone “cortisol” can remain elevated, thereby increasing appetite and belly fat. Regular alcohol consumption changes our metabolism in other ways. Technically, alcohol is a toxin that is metabolized and processed by the liver. Too much alcohol can affect the way the liver performs the detoxification process leading to inflammation, an altered metabolism, and increased appetite. Also, the metabolites from alcohol are used by the body as energy before lipids (fat), so fat is less likely to be burned as energy. Finally, alcohol reduces our inhibitions, often leading to eating unhealthier foods resulting in greater calorie consumption. Also, people who consume large amounts of alcohol are less likely to be active. Lack of exercise, of course, results in an increase in fat accumulation and weight gain. For women, one drink per day is considered healthy. Men can safely consume two drinks per day. Consuming much beyond that for long periods of time can also result in other detrimental effects such as increased blood pressure, liver damage, and some forms of cancer. LANARK – Eastland School Superintendent Mark Hansen said that on Feb. 18, the district closed on the issuance of $3.5 million in Working Cash and Health Life Safety Bonds for the installation of new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The work will replace original systems installed in the 1927, 1951, 1952 and 1957 sections of the Eastland Elementary School in Shannon and Junior/ Senior High School in Lanark. At the Feb. 17 Board of Education meeting, Hansen said, “The district was able to sell the bonds through a private placement, saving approximately $25,000 in the costs of issuance.” He commended First Midstate, bond underwriters
for the issuance. The placement will be through four local banks – Exchange Mark Hansen State Bank of Lanark, First State Bank Shannon-PoloLake Carroll, State Bank of Freeport and State Bank of Lena — at a blended interest rate over the 8-year term of 1.88 percent. District architect Scott Johnson presented bids for the geothermal HVAC project at Eastland Elementary School. The low bidder was Loescher Heating and Cooling of Freeport. The board approved the bid from Loescher in an amount not to exceed $1.511 million after value-engineering and minor re-designs, including costs for architecture and engineering. Hansen will work with the architects and Loescher to develop a construction schedule and timeline. Hansen presented information on the increases to property, liability and casualty insurance premiums
Board action after closed session The board entered closed session for 46 minutes. Upon re-entering regular session, the board approved the following personnel actions for the 2016-2017 school year: • Accepted the resignation of Lisa Beach as Eastland Elementary art/computers teacher. • Hired Tyler Zumdahl as Eastland Elementary physical education teacher; Charity Hammer as a substitute teachers’ aide in the Early Step Pre-School; and approved the reassignment of Wendy Kindberg from special route driver to substitute driver, effective Jan. 27. • Approved posting or continuing to post vacancies for full-time business/computers teacher, grades 7-12; full-time K-6 art/computers teacher; head high school volleyball coach for the 2016 season; a summer credit recovery/IVS facilitator for 2016; and for substitute custodians and bus drivers. • Approved Brock Musser and Riley Asche as additional volunteers for the Eastland-Pearl City football cooperative, pending completion of volunteer screening process and IHSA coaching certification. resulting from the recent appraisal of the district’s buildings and contents. In total, the appraisal estimated replacement values to be approximately $7 million more than originally estimated and insured. The statement of values will result in a $2,034 increase in the annual premium. The board authorized Hansen to enter into lease-
to-own agreements with Exchange State Bank of and computer purchases beginning in 2016-17. Buses will be purchased on a 5-year lease at a 1.9 percent a 4-year lease at the same rate. Hansen said that the Chadwick-Milledgeville School board has informally requested to tuition-in
preschool special education students to the Eastland Special Education PreSchool in Shannon starting in 2016-17. Hansen will work with Superintendent Tim Schurman to draft a 2-year intergovernmental agreement for both boards to consider at the regular March 16 meeting, which will be at Eastland Elementary School in Shannon. The board also approved: 3-Year Strategic Plan for the district that provides status reports, challenges, and SMART goals for each of six areas: transportation, extracurricular activities, technology, and curriculum/ Instruction. The plan is the result of 6 months of work and input from staff, board and community members, and parents. “The plan will guide decision-making and allocation of resources for the next 3 years,” Hansen said. • Curriculum changes for 2016-17. New courses include basic design, drawing 101, painting 101, graphic design, intro to
computer aided drafting, intro to digital media arts, intro to industrial arts, robotics and biomechanics, sculpture and ceramics, studio art, and yearbook. The board also approved the Eastland Junior/Senior High School curriculum guide for 2016-17. for 2016-17. Teacher institutes will be held day of student attendance Wednesday, Aug. 17; Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled for Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 19-20; spring break will be March 27-31. If no snow/emergency days are used, the last day of student attendance will be Thursday, May 18, 2017. Ten emergency days will be scheduled at the end of the year from May 22 to June 5, to be used as needed; There will be no school on Labor Day, Columbus Day, Martin Luther King’s birthday, Presidents Day, Good Friday, and Memorial Day. Institute and school improvement days will be scheduled throughout the year as needed.

Going 19 rounds, Charles out-spelled 27 of the top spellers from 14 schools in Carroll, Jo Daviess, and Stephenson counties who competed for the honor of representing the Northwestern Illinois region at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, District of Colombia, in May. “I study a lot, and spend a lot of time learning the root of the words, too,” Charles said. “It can help with the spelling sometimes if you know the origin of the word.” When asked how she felt unseating her classmate for the championship, Olivia humbly replied, “It was all West Carroll!” As last year’s champion, Brennon had some advice for Olivia, who will be making the trip to Washington, D.C. this year. “The best idea is to study really well. At the national spelling bee, they have crazy words that you would never be able to study or understand.” He had nothing but praise for his classmate, in spite of losing to her.

LANARK — A 79-yearold farmer was rescued, uninjured, from his corn bin Feb. 23. Ron Sturtz was stuck in his grain bin at 23879 Straddle Creek Road north of town 2 or 3 hours before the Lanark Fire Department pulled him out around 1 p.m. “He wasn’t really trapped, just exhausted from trying to pull himself out,” Assistant Fire Chief Dan Shaulis said. “He was checking the corn, and climbed in without a longer ladder,” said Sturtz’s wife, Millie, around 12:30 p.m.

The projects are assessed in several categories including implementation analysis, and the number of residents affected. The projects are not mandated, but they are an organizational tool for budget and strategic
planning. “The main goal is to identify mitigation projects throughout the county,” said Seth Janssen, the county’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency coordinator. “When new leaders come in, this is still in place.” The federal agency uses the lure of grant money to get cities to take a more proactive approach to
natural disasters. “They would rather spend money on solutions than cleanup,” Janssen said. “Every dollar spent on the mitigation plans saves them $3 to $4 by averting a disaster.” Janssen said the plans will be updated every 5 years for FEMA, but a local policy group will meet every year for possible changes.

New CCT driver, Jeff Davis Jeff Davis of Mount Carroll is our newest driver at Carroll County Transit. He and his wife, Karen, moved here in 2006 from West Chicago. They have owned and operated Davis Custom Decorator’s since 1985. Jeff is also a substitute bus driver for the West Carroll School District. Jeff and Karen have two adult children. Son, Jon, and his wife, Lindsey, live in Taylorville with their five children that include two sets of twins. Their daughter, Samantha lives in Seattle and is a graduate student. LiHEAP application assistance The LiHEAP program began Oct. 1. The Carroll County Senior Center will be doing applications for Tri-County Opportunities Council again this year. The Senior Center will do applications from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will only assist with applications for people 60 and older and for disabled people. Bring proof of income for the last 30 days, current gas and electric bill and social security cards for everyone in the household. Call the Senior Center at 815-244-1800 to set up an appointment.
Exercise equipment at Senior Center The Carroll County Senior Center has four pieces of professional-grade equipment available: Treadmill, rowing machine, E-Force cross trainer and recumbent bicycle. You are welcome to use any of these anytime the Senior Center is open, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. These four fine pieces of exercise equipment have been donated to help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve both their physical and mental states. As anyone can tell you, a few minutes walking or riding a bike can go a long way. We have moved the exercise equipment to the downstairs area for more privacy for those who wish to use it. So bring a few friends and all of you can work out together, and the best part—it’s free!

By Nancy Gable With spring just around the corner (Yay, I love spring!), many of us will be busy projects, and garden work. And if your home is like my home, you’ll probably get frustrated with that mysterious visitor, like we do, that always manages to come around at the most inopportune times. I wrote about this visitor many years ago when we had children at home. I share it again in this issue of the Senior Grapevine because, although our children are grown and on their own, this visitor still comes around.

Every household has a silent, mysterious, unseen visitor. He gives no notice of his comings and goings but the evidence of his visits is always clear. Who is this visitor? Ask any member of a larger household, “Who took the scissors and didn’t put them back,” and a chorus of

I discover the item in a place that I had thoroughly searched and could swear it wasn’t there. of this is the bird book we lost last summer. I searched a pile of magazines, papers and pamphlets where I was sure the book had last been seen. It wasn’t there. Over time I used other items from that pile and the missing book was not to be found. One day I was idly and, lo and behold, there it was. Nobody had hidden decided to return it. Over time we have come to accept and even joke about this unseen visitor. Whenever there’s a minor problem, we place the blame where it belongs—Nobody did it.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Senior Center Gift Shop The Gift Shop at the Senior Center has very unique gifts handmade by talented volunteers working throughout Carroll County. What do you do with your old cellphones? Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones. We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low-kncome persons. There is one box at the Senior Center. If the program goes well, we will increase the number of boxes and place them in other areas.
If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cell phones, ask them to drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 4-H Camp changes lives; register now MOUNT CARROLL – Still looking for a fun and safe activity for your child this summer? Sign up for 4-H Camp ’16 at Camp Benson in Mount Carroll. Camp runs June 13-17 and is open to all youth who are 8 to 14 years old by June 13. 4-H membership is not required. 4-H Camp is a 5-day, 4-night residential camping experience that is conducted cooperatively by University of Illinois Extension staff in Dekalb, Winnebago, Boone, Stephenson, Ogle, and Jo Daviess counties and the professional staff at Camp Benson. “4-H Camp changes a child’s life,” said Jodi Baumgartner, program coordinator for 4-H Youth and Development in Ogle County. “Five days and 4 nights without their parents is a true growth experience. Youth learn to do things for themselves that mom and dad normally do for them.” Campers will engage in a variety of activities designed to challenge, educate, and entertain, including options like swimming, hiking, nature study, rock climbing, arts and crafts, archery, stacking, team-building challenges, camping skills, scavenger hunts, tubing, and kayaking along the Waukarusa River. Evening activities will be provided by the teen 4-H camp counselors from the co-sponsoring counties and and one night of friendly competition. 4-H Camp offers youth the perfect blend of social,
recreational, and leadership activities in an environment where the bar is set high when it comes to safety, caring, fun, and experiences for campers. “But no worries, we have 24 excellent, trained camp counselors that step in for mom and dad and remind the kids to shower and brush their teeth!” Baumgartner said. Camp counselors go through a rigorous selection process, train for 4 months before camp, and learn skills that will help them provide the safety, care, fun, and adventures that campers and parents expect. “Because many of our camp counselors have been campers themselves, they understand the impact they can leave on a camper, for life. These teens also gain an appreciation for volunteerism and devote over 200 hours of their time to train, plan, and participate in the counselor experience,” Baumgartner said. FORRESTON REGIONAL Feb. 22 Eastland 46, Erie 45: Erie was a few inches away from pulling off a true hoops miracle. Eastland, however, is the team day, following a 46-45 victory Feb. 22 at the Class 1A Forreston Regional. The Cardinals (15-16) would have gotten a shot at the Braves had a last-second half-court heave by senior guard Jordan Chandler been slightly to the right. Instead, it was the Cougars left to celebrate. “This feels good,” Eastland senior center Blake Janssen said. Eastland’s Brighton Haverland made two free throws with 55 seconds remaining, then Zach Randecker dropped in two more with 29.3 seconds to go to give their team a 45-39 lead. With 18.3 seconds left, Erie’s Bransen Rosenow hit a 3-pointer which the Cardinals used their Haverland went back to the line with 14.8 seconds to play, and hit Eastland a 46-42 lead. On Erie’s next possession, the ball was worked around until Vinny Bramm drained a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to play, bringing the score to 46-45. But the Cardinals were out of timeouts and unable to stop the clock. Eastland had a balanced attack, with Janssen and Haverland each scoring 10 points and combining for 16 rebounds. Randecker and DeGroot each added eight points. The Cougars now get a chance at the regional’s beast team, Annawan. Dunlap noted the Braves in his team’s defense, and their offensive threats are many.
