Jasper County launches Crime Stoppers program Newton Daily News A new way to help combat crime launched in January after a volunteer board worked for about a year to form Jasper County Crime Stoppers. “Jasper County Crime Stoppers is an effort to support local law enforcement and help Jasper County become a safer place for all,” said Abigail Pelzer, who chairs the nonprofit. Following an introductory meeting last May, the board set out to bring the nationwide program to Jasper County. The premise behind Crime Stoppers is providing an anonymous way for citizens to inform officers about crime, or give tips on
crimes that officers are investigating. Information is received on an anonymous and secure tip line or through a secure web connection controlled by a professional program coordinator. “Thanks to the work
of Crime Stoppers volunteers we have obtained software housed at the sheriff ’s office that allows citizens to anonymously report crimes via text, phone or online,” Pelzer said. “These anonymous tipsters who help bring criminals to
justice are eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000 for their assistance.” The mission of nonprofit is to empower citizens to make their neighborhoods, schools and businesses safer through anonymous reporting
of crime without fear of retaliation. Fore Seasons owner David Peters said he became involved with the organization because he thought it was time for the county to have this service. “I wanted to be involved as much as I can to help get it off of the ground,” Peters said. “I think it benefits the community and in a way it could help benefit our business. We (Fore Seasons) were broken into about a year and a half ago so we want to do whatever we can to help prevent crime in the county.” Prairie City Police Chief Joe Bartello is also looking forward to the program. He said he has seen it work well in other counties in the state
and hopes for the same success locally. “I think it is a good program,” Bartello said. “I think a lot of the burglaries, the thefts, where there is property that has to go somewhere for someone to make a profit on it or try to turn it around and use it somewhere else, is what I would probably see it be most effective.” To report crime, citizens can call 641-7928362, text JASPER to 274637 (CRIMES) or submit tips online at jaspercrimestoppers.com. Fallen officers to be remembered at peace officer ceremony By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The public is invited to attend the Peace Officers Memorial ceremony to honor those officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jasper County Courthouse lawn. “Ultimately it is important for our community to recognize the sacrifices of our officers in the past who have lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as our current officers who sacrifice so much day to day,” Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess said. “It is important to do so simply because they are putting their life on the line every day for our community to make it safer and better.” The ceremony will feature brief speeches by area police officers including those from the Newton Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office as well as the reading of a proclamation from councilwoman Lin Chapé. Also, for the second year, the Newton Daily News will present a Law En-

forcement Employee of the Year Award. New this year, Newton Police Officers who have received the Richardson Award, the McPherren Award and the Barrickman Award will be recognized at the ceremony. The awards, which are new to the department in the last year, honor those officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice while working to keep
citizens of Newton safe. “The Richardson Award recognizes officers who meet a high level of fitness, the McPherren Award recognizes officers who have a high level of fire arms proficiency and the Barrickman Award that honors officers who have saved a life,” Burdess said. “We’re going to announce it at the ceremony and have the awards on display.
When officers receive the award their name goes on the plaque.” Officer Bobby Barrickman was killed in a traffic accident in 1979, Officer Daniel McPherren was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery in 1985 and Lt. Pat Richardson suffered a heart attack in 2013 while training for upcoming physical agility testing. The ceremony and awards

Police Week Events Peace Officer Memorial Day In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officer Memorial Day and the week of May 15 as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Newton Police Department knows that sacrifice all too well as we have lost three of our own heroes, Officer Bobby Barrickman, Officer Daniel McPherren and Lt. Patrick Richardson, to the perils of the law enforcement profession. On May 18, the Newton Police Department will again host the annual Peace Officer Memorial Service honoring the sacrifice and legacy of our local heroes. The event
will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the north side of the Jasper County Courthouse lawn. It will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather. The public is invited to attend this ceremony and share with the members of the Newton Police Department a time of reflection on our past, present and future.

Torch Run The Iowa Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run Jasper County portion will begin at 9 a.m. May 24 in Newton. Officers will run from Casey’s East to the entrance of the West Wood Golf Course. There will be stop for a break and a drink at the courthouse lawn.
Participants will also chat and take photos with any Progress Industries clients who attend. There will be a squad leading the runners and a squad tailing the runners. Runners from the Newton Police Department, the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office, the Department of Corrections and possibly other Jasper County Agencies will be participating.
Richardson Run Memorial 5K The annual Richardson Run Memorial 5K will begin at 9 a.m. May 20 hosted by the Newton Police Department. The run will begin at Berg Middle School, 1900 N. Fifth Ave. E. on the north side by the softball field. The Richardson Run Memorial 5K is named after Newton Police Officer, Lt. Patrick Richardson, who died on Sept. 1, 2013, after suffering a heart attack while on his morning run. Funds raised from this event

Sheriff Deputy Cunningham named 2017 Law Enforcement Employee of the Year By Jessica Lowe Special to Newton Daily News When driving around Jasper County it is not uncommon to see Jasper County Sheriff ’s Deputy Jason Cunningham out and about patrolling through local communities, stopping to chat with citizens and even playing ball with neighborhood kids. “Getting out and being active is where you encounter some of the most memorable moments,” Cunningham said of his job as deputy. Being part of the community and serving his neighbors is something Cunningham is known for, but he also is known for being an effective peace officer with more than 1,000 traffic stops and 132 self-initiated arrests since taking his post three years ago. “What’s nice about this job is you can truly see the results of your hard work,” Cunningham said. “What I mean is whether you are doing a follow up on a case and you finally find that one thing that leads you to solving a case or it’s from using your training you’ve done to get drugs or intoxicated drivers off the street. It’s truly a fun job that gives you the ability to help people out and interact with the community.” Cunningham was recently named the Law Enforcement Employee of the Year, an award created to recognize an employee at the Newton Police Department or Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office who demonstrates a high ethical standard, exceptional work ethic and is dedicated to public service. Cunningham was nominated by someone within the Jasper County law enforcement community and is the second recipient of the award presented by the Newton Daily News. “Deputy Jason Cunningham is an essential part of our team at Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office,” said Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty. “He brings professionalism and enthusiasm to his work. In addition to his current patrol assignment, he is a tactical team member and a certified emergency medical technician. Deputy Cunningham works with well with others and is always seeking to improve the services that he performs. Deputy Cunningham is a great example of what a law enforcement officer should be, and certainly deserves this award.” CUNNINGHAM | 9

Cunningham Continued from Page 8 Cunningham grew up in Worthington, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus where he graduated from Worthington Kilbourne High School. After high school. Cunningham attended Drake University in Des Moines before transferring to Ohio State Un ive r s it y where he received my bachelors in criminology with a minor in sociology. Cunningham served as an intern at Jasper County Sheriff ’s OfCunningham fice in the summer of 2013 and was hired in 2014. “(Being is law enforcement has) been something I’ve always wanted to do and had a passion for,” Cunningham said. “I just feel this is where I was lead to be. Also, my uncle who is a recently retired Las Vegas S.W.A.T. Officer and is someone I really look up to. He was the first person who got me interested in this profession.” While Cunningham said the job can be difficult because of being put into dangerous and chaotic situations, he said Jasper County has a great group of people who make the job better. “I work with incredible people at the sheriff ’s office from deputies, jailers, civil service, dispatchers, transport officers and our office ladies,” he said. “Even outside our agency this county is truly lucky to have the kind of men and women they have serving them. I feel truly blessed to be a part of all the first responders in this county. Along with his colleagues, Cunningham said the people who call Jasper County home keeps him motivated and proud to be part of the local law enforcement community. “Our community is very supportive and we appreciate that more than they know,” he said. “It’s not always the easiest job, but we do it because we love it and have a passion for it.”

Submitted Photo On Dec. 23, 2016 the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office got to play Santa Claus throughout Newton. A generous citizen, donated $100 gift cards for deputies to hand out at local retail and grocery stores. Undercover officers roamed the store to pick out individuals to be presented with the gift cards. When the people got in line to checkout, they were surprised by deputies in uniform who presented them with the card. It was a great experience for everyone involved and a positive interaction between unsuspecting customers and sheriff’s office personnel and spouses.

Why did you choose to work in law enforcement? My family (father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncles) lived and worked in Waterloo at the John Deere Factory. I always thought I would work there as well until the layoffs in the 1970s took place. My dad worked as a part-time police officer and let me ride with him on occasion. I was hooked and decided to become a police officer and in 1982-84 attended Hawkeye Community College, in the Police Science program.

Number of years in current position: 2 Why did you choose to work in law enforcement? Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a police officer. My father is a longtime volunteer firefighter and was a positive influence on me going into law enforcement. When you become a police officer you join a large family that spans across the world and it’s amazing to be a part of something that is so much greater than yourself. The impact law enforcement officers have on their communities every day is often overlooked, but there is no greater honor than serving and protecting the citizens of our great country.

From a young age I wanted to be in a position to stand between good people and the people who survive by taking advantage of them. I enlisted in the U.S. Army as a military policeman to begin my law enforcement career, and it was there that I first learned how much I enjoyed the diversity, complexity and dynamic nature of the job.

Why did you choose to work in law enforcement? I started law enforcement, like many others, to help people and for the appeal of the excitement of the job. Over the years I’ve stayed in law enforcement because of the small victories. Those times when someone approaches me and tells me that I made a difference in a tough situation, or I helped them in a special way. Many times it was a conversation that was shared and other times a lecture that was given when they were headed the wrong direction. When those times happen and I look back there are times the situation seemed insignificant to me or I thought that no difference was made. But when I hear that it made a positive impact on someone else’s life, enough that they remember it, that is what keeps me going in this profession after all these years. It makes the sacrifice of missing holidays, birthdays, sports events, and other times with my family more tolerable. It makes me realize that God put me in this job for a reason.

Why did you choose to work in law enforcement? I chose law enforcement because I wanted to make positive differences in people’s lives and wanted a job where I wasn’t doing the same thing every day. Nothing is routine in law enforcement and that is what makes it a challenge day in and day out that I enjoy.

Project Blue Light returns for Police Week Newton Daily News

The Newton Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association is launching its second annual Project Blue Light Newton. During the week of May 14-20 in recognition of National Police Week, residents are urged to Let Blue Lights Shine throughout the Newton community. The blue is in recognition of the daily sacrifices of Law Enforcement Officers nationwide past and present service to the community. The proceeds from Project Blue Light Newton will go towards the expansion of the Newton Police Department Law Enforcement Memorial and the Shop with Cops Program.
The blue light bulbs will be sold for $10 at the Newton Police Department and are available during business hours 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
