READY TO RUN FOR FUN Harvest Run 5K/10K and Kids Miler returns for 28th year

nsuring participants have clear roads on race day to the task of ordering enough food to feed hungry runners, it takes a village to produce the annual Plainfield Harvest Run 5K/10K and Kids Miler. This year’s event will be Sunday, Sept. 27, marking the 28th annual event that draws on average, more than 800 participants of all ages. “Last year we had 900 people registered and we’re hoping to do it again,” said Tasha Marsaglia, executive director of the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce. For the participants, running and walking, it’s a chance to test their fitness, join friends for a fun run and see if they can beat last year’s times. The youngest participants start as children in strollers with their parents before registering for the Kids Miler and later, making the leap to the full 5K. Reserved for the last Sunday in September, participants hope for a crispy autumn morning to greet them on the course as they prepare on the night before the race, while gathering their shoes, clothes and bib. “This is a great opportunity to get out in the community,” Interial said.

Funds raised from the race will be distributed back into local organizations that support the community. Over the more than two decades of races, it has raised more than $400,000, Marsaglia said.

Businesses aren’t the only ones sharing their time. Marsaglia said it takes about 100 volunteers to help with the race. From those who show up before dawn to begin set-up to those helping participants along the route and managing race day. The race includes support from the police and fire departments, village and park district staff too, she added.

Local sponsorship and volunteer support are a key element to the success of the annual event. The event’s name sponsor for the second annual year is UChicago Medicine Advent Health Bolingbrook, along with TR Miller Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical, Soap Opera Laundromat and the 10K sponsor is Webb Chevrolet of Plainfield. Shelly Interial, membership engagement specialist for the Greater Joliet Area YMCA and C.W. Avery Family YMCA is on the race’s committee. This year she and her committee were tasked with gathering donations for the post-race snacks. Helping to feed the hungry runners, Jersey Mikes will be donating mini sandwiches along with the Jewel on 127th Street supplying pallets of water, bananas and

boxes of granola bars, Interial said. “It’s a lot. We try to get a variety of restaurants in the area to donate,” Interial said. Her committee also secured gift certificates and kids’ meals from Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers Restaurant for those participating in the Kids Miler. And there’s apples from Keller Farm, and food for the volunteers from the Kory Family that operates the McDonalds in Plainfield. Even the new addition of Zaxby’s Chicken Fingers & Buffalo Wings is bringing in some food.

Packet pick up is hosted at DNA Active Lifestyle Outfitters, a perfect spot to grab some new running socks or other pre-race items. Registration remains open through the morning of the event. The race is just the start of the fun, as participants and community members continue to enjoy the morning at Village Green Park and a post-race fun at Sovereign in Plainfield. “It really is a great community event to help be a part of,” Marsaglia said.

The entertainment lineup was nothing short of amazing! From Don’t Matter to Me, Semple, Beyond the Blonde, Journey 2 Jovi, and County Line, every performance kept the crowds singing, dancing and having a great time. Sunday brought sunshine and the perfect ending to the weekend with our rescheduled Craft & Vendor Show, Car Show, Midwest Bags Tournament and, of course, the always-popular carnival rides. It was a beautiful way to wrap up an unforgettable festival! Events like Shorewood Crossroads don’t happen without an incredible team behind the scenes. LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dear Chamber of Commerce members and partners, As we welcome students back for the 2026-2027 school year, I want to take a moment to update our business community on what’s happening across District 202 and, importantly, on the ways we hope to continue growing our partnership with you. This week, we welcomed staff, greeted kindergartners on their very first day of school, and watched our seniors begin their final year with us. It’s always one of my favorite times of year. As we look ahead, two priorities anchor everything we do: keeping students and staff safe, and being smart stewards of tax dollars.

SCHOOL SAFETY

Nothing matters more to us than the safety of our students and staff. Following last year’s end-of-year incident, we spent the

summer reviewing every safety procedure districtwide. That work translated into concrete action: exterior doors are locked throughout the day and classroom doors are locked whenever students are present; every door has been tested and repairs completed; a new HallPass visitor screening system verifies every visitor and volunteer who enters a building; every staff member completes ALICE training before the first bell rings, and students will be trained by October 1; and we continue to run ongoing safety drills, including unannounced ones. Families can find full details in our District Safety Brochure on the School Safety webpage, and I’d encourage anyone in the community to be aware of Safe2Help, our confidential reporting tool that plays a key role in early intervention. You may also notice extra police presence near our schools during the first few days back - that’s a normal, proactive measure, not cause for alarm.

SCHOOL FUNDING

Last year, District 202 moved from Tier 1 to Tier 2 state funding, a shift that costs the district $7 million annually and compounds over time. Combined with ongoing infrastructure needs across our 34 buildings – 31 schools plus our tech center, administration center, and operations/maintenance facility – this makes responsible financial planning more important than ever. We’re currently engaging with the community to gather input and evaluate needs and costs. There is no referendum on the November ballot, and no final funding decisions have been made. Our commitment is to listen, plan, and stay transparent throughout the year; postcards with more information are going out to families now.

A PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY: INCUBATOR NTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM - YEAR 3 This is where I’d especially love the Chamber’s help. INCubator pairs Plainfield high schoolers with real business mentors to build actual, functioning businesses - giving students hands-on

experience in leadership, confidence, and entrepreneurship that no classroom lecture can replicate. As we enter our third year, we’re looking for volunteers to serve as mentors, coaches, and “lending bankers” to help guide our students. As Tasha Marsaglia, Plainfield North INCubator Community Champion and executive director of the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce, puts it, this program is a great way for the business community to connect with local students. If your business or someone on your team would like to get involved, please fill out the volunteer interest form at psd202.org – just search “INCubator” or article 3055142.

ILLINOIS CELL PHONE BAN LAW You may have seen that the state recently signed a new law limiting student cell phone use during the school day, effective for the 2027-2028 school year. The short version: District 202 was ahead of this one. The law affirms the direction we already took, not a new mandate we have to scramble to meet. Our current handbook language and board policy already meet the standard the state is now mandating,

and have for the past several years. No new board action is required at this time; we’ll confirm alignment against ISBE’s official template once it’s released on September 1, but we don’t anticipate changes to our current policy. For context, the law requires “bell-to-bell” restrictions (including lunch and passing periods) for grades K-8, restricts phone use during instruction at the high school level with local flexibility on breaks and lunch, prohibits suspensions, fines, or expulsions as enforcement tools, and comes with no attached state funding.

DISTRICT PLACES REFERENDUM ON BALLOT IN NOVEMBER ELECTION By Melissa Rubalcaba Riske

n August, the school board for Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C voted to add a measure to the November 2026 ballot asking voters to support a limiting rate referendum to provide additional operating revenue. The decision to seek a 45-cent tax rate increase follows the school board’s review of finances and community discussions. Without the tax rate increase, the district would face the need to cut staff, increase class sizes and cut instructional and extracurricular programs. The current request has been scaled back from the initial proposal, which included

funding for a new Early Childhood Center and facility improvements at Troy Middle School. In the spring, the school board members and district leadership met with residents to discuss the plans, and the response showed a strong demand for attracting and retaining quality teachers, staff and its current educational and extracurricular programs.

the current tax rate. The district was on target to pay off long-term debt in 2028, which would have reduced the tax rate by 45 cents per $100 of an equalized assessed value. If voters approve the referendum measure this fall, it would enable the district to maintain the current tax rate and negate a net increase to residents and property owners in the district.

The school board reviewed the feedback and decided to remove the facility improvements and Early Childhood Center from its plans and concentrate on the operating revenue for the district.

It has been 20 years since the district last sought voter approved funding measures. The referendum will appear on the ballot for the elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

“We have a unique opportunity as our previous debt matures to maintain our current tax rate, allowing us to continue investing in the high standard of education and community quality that defines Troy 30-C,” said Superintendent Paul Schrik. In the revised plan, the district leadership is asking voters to maintain

Troy District 30-C is a Pre-K through eighth grades school district that serves portions of Joliet, Shorewood, Channahon, Crest Hill and unincorporated Troy Township. The district includes five elementary schools, one intermediate school for fifth and sixth grades and one middle school for seventh and eighth grades.
