Members and guests of the Chief Senachwine Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution learned Feb. 3 about Potawatomie Chief Senachwine and other tribes from presenter and local historian of Native Americans, Lonna Naumann. Revealing locations of villages, chairtrees, battles and burial mounds, Naumann shared her knowledge of Native American heritage in Illinois and Wisconsin and in the immediate area. She also shared native items from her large collection, some of which date hundreds of years. Regent Dolores Dace called the morning meeting to order and thanked members for wearing red for Heart Health Month. She also reminded members to honor the February birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and to celebrate Presidents Day on Feb. 17. Chaplain Florence Finfgeld led the group in prayer for husbands/fathers George Wheeler and Richard Galetti connected to chapter members. Committee reports were given by chairmen of American History, Commemorative Events, Conservation, Good Citizens, Flag of the U.S.A. and Service for Veterans. A detailed report was shared by Women’s Issues chair Tara Hufnagel on the warning signs of heart attack and stroke. She shared a handout from the American Heart Association and said heart attack signs are different for women than for men. Certificates of recognition were given for 20-year DAR members Diana Williamson, Elizabeth Williamson and Karen Schwiderski. Election of delegates and alternates for the April State Conference was held, and the completed update of the chapter bylaws was announced. Further action

Marshall-Putnam 4-H along with Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners are offering the Learn-Grow-Share SPIN (special interest) club to all youth ages 8 to 18. The club will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 29 at the Marshall-Putnam Extension office, 509 Front St., Henry. Sessions will be one to two times per month depending on the weather and task for that month. Youth will learn: the basics of seed starting by constructing a seed-starting light; appropri-

Youth from Bureau, La Salle and Marshall-Putnam counties will put their public speaking skills to the test at 2 p.m. March 9 during the 4-H Public Speaking Contest at the Illinois Valley Community College auditorium. All family members are invited to attend the event. Youth who participate in this yearly exhibit develop skills for communicating real-life issues to live audiences and receive professional and peer feedback. Youth ages 8 to 18 can participate in the contest and gain skills in learning how to organize and prepare a speech, developing speech delivery skills and learning how to present themselves in front of an audience. There are four divisions for youth to register. In the formal speech division, youth share their perspective on a topic of their choice with a speech intended to motivate, persuade or inform an audience.

In the illustrated division, speeches may inform, persuade or motivate the audience with the use of a visual aid and may include audience participation. In the oral interpretation division, presentations must be previously published works or manuscripts with youth competing individually and in teams. In the original works division, presentations must be published works, and manuscripts or transcripts. Public speaking is an important part of the overall 4-H experience. Throughout the year, 4-H members give talks and demonstrations at community club meetings and share information about the skills they learned in a project while receiving feedback in a supportive environment. Every 4-H member also is encouraged to give at least one formal presentation during a club meeting each year. State’s attorney asks to end Weger exoneration bid Special prosecutor argues for dismissal of Weger’s case By TOM COLLINS

tcollins@shawmedia.com Chester Weger, who was convicted in the 1960 Starved Rock murders case, has been seeking exoneration. A special prosecutor argued Tuesday that the time has come to end Weger’s bid. Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow filed a 78-page pleading Tuesday in La Salle County Circuit Court. In it, Glasgow argued that Weger, who is soon to be 85 years old, was in fact guilty of killing Lillian Oetting, one of three women found bludgeoned to death at the state park. “[Weger’s] repeated insistence that the ‘false confession’ was the only evidence against him is simply not true,” Glasgow assistant Colleen Griffin wrote. Whether or not Weger can continue his bid for exoneration – a successive post-conviction petition, in legal parlance – will be up to a judge in La Salle County. Judge Michael C. Jansz has scheduled an April 10 hearing on the state’s

motion to dismiss. First, however, lawyers for Weger will have a chance to argue why Jansz should let Weger pursue his exoneration bid. Now that Glasgow’s pleading is on file, a reply from Hale & Monico, the Chicago firm representing Weger, is expected within 30 days. In Tuesday’s pleading, the special prosecutor argued that Weger’s claims of innocence have been heard and rejected before. And although Weger may have raised issues he characterizes as “new,” Glasgow and Griffin argued that Weger could have raised these issues at trial but never did so. Glasgow and Griffin also argued that recent laboratory findings are not exculpatory; that is, they do not prove he didn’t commit the crime. In particular, they zeroed in on a recent finding that DNA retrieved from hair, recovered from the glove of victim Frances Murphy, was found not to have been Weger’s. “That it did not match [Weger’s] hair did not mean that [Weger] did not commit this crime,” they wrote. “The people would add that [Weger’s] trial cannot be judged by 2024 standards and law but by the standards and law in effect [when Weger stood trial] in 1961.”

The Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday set out to buy simulation equipment for the early childhood education program and to commission artwork commemorating the college’s centennial this year. The college is seeking bids to buy software kits and baby-sized manikins that can be programmed for child care, child education and parenting lessons, according to a news release. Costs will be covered by the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity Grant. The board authorized the commission and purchase of a 10-foot-by-20-foot mural highlighting the past and future of the college. Purchased using $35,000 from the IVCC Foundation CTC Fund, the art will be installed at the entrance to Building C in the Peter Miller Com-

Tornado registered winds of 110 mph, NWS says By DEREK BARICHELLO

dbarichello@shawmedia.com An EF1 tornado Thursday night led to some damage near the Marshall and Putnam counties line along Route 18 between Henry and Magnolia, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities. A rotating severe storm, known as a supercell, produced the tornado, according to the NWS. The tornado, which was about 100 yards wide, registered winds of 110 mph and was on the ground for 9.9 miles, said meteorologist Andy Ervin of the Quad Cities National Weather Service. Sirens sounded in Putnam County communities, and a warning also was issued for McNabb, Mark and Granville during the storm. The tornado was on the ground from 4:40 to about 4:52 p.m., according to the NWS. The tornado caused a semi-

trailer to roll over on Route 18, damaged a few out buildings and caused some branches to fall on the highway, the Putnam County Emergency Management Agency said Friday. No homes were reported damaged. A tornado in February is rare. Thursday’s is the second in the Quad Cities forecast area since 1950. The other tornado occurred Feb. 28, 2017. There only have been two tornadoes recorded earlier in the calendar year – Jan. 24, 1967, and Jan. 16, 2023. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Magnolia Fire Department, Putnam County Emergency Medical Services, Putnam County EMA and Illinois Department of Transportation responded to the incident. Traffic on a stretch of Route 18 was limited to one lane as debris was cleaned up. The NWS in the Quad Cities conducted the survey Friday.

That’s the hard part,” Mickley said. “We’ve played so many times that they know a lot about us and we know a lot about them. So you have to be creative and try to outsmart the others. We’ll be scouting all the teams and taking nobody for granted.” The Bruins are looking to win their first regional title since 2019-20. “It would mean a lot,” Mickley said. “I think these girls, if they put the hard work in and they get the regional title, they deserve it.
