Board OKs tax levy valued at $6.5 million District’s EAV goes up by 10 percent BY STEVE LUNGER Shaw Media GRANVILLE — The Putnam County School Board unanimously approved the tax levy for 2019 at Monday’s meeting at a projected total of $6,514,155. As Superintendent Carl Carlson explained, with farmland values increasing by as much as 10 percent and items expiring out the enterprise zone and coming onto the tax rolls, the district’s equalized assessed valuation for tax year 2019 has increased substantially. In fact, the total change in estimated EAV represents a 10.5 percent increase. Additionally, Carlson reminded the board that the district also may see a possible increase in corporate
personal property replacement tax funds this year. From Carlson’s perspective, these are timely developments, for the board will be considering the prospect of hiring a school resource officer, is on the verge of receiving a detailed facilities master plan that will provide important information for the sake of Carl Carlson long-term financial Putnam decisions, and faces County School legislation mandating superintendent minimum wages for teachers. Carson further reported that as of Monday, the state still owes the district $201,026 in funding. In other matters, the board approved the hiring of Susan Sale, high school special education para-professional, and accepted the resignation of Natalie Hulstrom as Panteras sponsor.

• EXCHANGE Continued from Page 4 With some guidance from local ICES coordinators Andrea Crew and Adeline Margis, the busy crew worked swiftly taking taco orders, hand-preparing each customized taco and serving the hot meal to the individuals. The feedback they got? All smiles and plenty of warm “thank yous.” Crew said she and Margis had been brainstorming ideas for a community service outreach for their students, and the idea to provide a meal at the homeless shelter was what they came up with. Plus, Peru was a good central location for them to meet. The students came from various areas in Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties. “I like to make sure people know these kids are not here just to get. They’re here to give, too. … This was a good opportunity for these students to see that not everyone in the States is as well off,” she said. “This is a good way for them to see America is very diverse, and we have people from all walks of life that come from different situations.”

Volunteers flocked to Bonucchi Hall at the UCC Church in Granville last week to prepare about 110 food baskets for families in need this Christmas season across Putnam County. In another, Terri Mecagni (left) and Janelle Weddell check out bags of toys that accompanied the food baskets for children of the family. Distribution was to take place the Saturday before Christmas. Organizers noted that the number of families who requested baskets was down slightly this year, compared to the 120 families who were served last year.

One-vehicle accident At 4:58 a.m. Dec. 14, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on Route 29 one-half mile south of Log Cabin Road in Senachwine Township. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Danielle R. Gash, 25, of Peoria. Gash was traveling southbound when her vehicle crossed over into the northbound lane and entered the east ditch, striking a natural gas “farm tap,” then striking an embankment, causing the vehicle to roll one time. Also in the vehicle was Brandon A. Hutson, 28, of Chillicothe. Hutson was transported to OSF St. Francis by Henry Ambulance. Gash was transported to Perry Memorial Hospital, then transferred to OSF St. Francis. Gash was charged with failure to reduce speed, improper lane usage, no insurance and driving under the influence. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Henry Ambulance, Putnam County EMS and the Henry Fire Department. The accident remains under investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
PC to induct two into Hall of Fame GRANVILLE — Putnam County High School will induct Scott Parker (Class of 1983) and Kari Haines (Class of 2006) into its Hall of Fame on Jan. 10 between the sophomore and varsity boys basketball games against Seneca.
Parker was a two-time state qualifier in cross-country and he placed fourth at the state meet in 1982. In track and field, he qualified for state in three events over two years and placed fourth in the 1,600 meters in 1983. He holds the school
records in the 800 (1:58.7) and the 1,600 (4:22.91). Haines was a three-time state qualifier in the shot put and placed seventh as a senior in 2006. She holds the school record in the event at 40 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
Leigh was also re-elected to a third term serving District 4. Joining Leigh in leadership roles are Vice President Randy DeSutter of Woodhull, Treasurer Matt Rush of Fairfield and Secretary Keith Sanders of Vandalia. The Exports Committee will be led by Chairman Mike Homerding of Plainfield and Vice Chairman Kate Danner of Aledo. Elected to lead the Industrial Committee were Marty Marr of New Berlin and Vice Chairman Terry Smith of Clayton. Grassroots Committee leadership for the coming year are Chairman Ted Mottaz of Elmwood and Vice
Chairman Sarah Hastings of Sidney. In addition to Leigh, five other directors were re-elected and will continue in their positions as directors. They are Mike Homerding for District 1, Marty Marr for District 10 and Matt Rush for District 13. Re-elected at-large directors include Kate Danner of Aledo and Dave Rylander of Victoria. The newly elected director of District 7, serving Dewitt, Macon, McLean, Moultrie, Piatt and Woodford counties, is Mark Bunselmeyer of Maroa. IN BRIEF Corn farmers group elects new officers, board members BLOOMINGTON — Bill Leigh, a farmer from Minonk, was elected president of the Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) for 2019-20 at their reorganizational meeting, which was held Nov. 26 following the organization’s annual meeting. Leigh has served on the ICGA board for six years, most recently as vice president. He will continue his role as District 4 director for the duration of his term as president, serving members in Bureau, Lee, Marshall, Putnam, Stark and Whiteside counties.

Kim McKee chosen as Career Banker of the Year
River Valley Players will present ‘Wonderful Town’ in March
The Career Development Division (CDD) of the Community Bankers Association of Illinois (CBAI) has awarded the Career Banker of the Year award to Kim McKee for going above and beyond the call of duty to benefit the cause of community banking. McKee is the chief operations officer and vice president at North Central Bank. She is dedicated to being a true community banker in every aspect. She has served as a CDD group director from 2010 to 2014 and as CDD chairwoman from 2013-14. She has also been very active within her community and advancing the cause of financial literacy as she was the recipient of the CDD Economic Educator award in both 2009 and 2012. McKee’s dedication and commitment to the Career Development Division has been strong. She has attended CBAI’s annual convention consecutively for many years where she has been a very vocal advocate. McKee has also been active with CBAI’s lobbying efforts. She annu-
ally attends the Capital Conference held in Springfield, where she meets with her state representatives and senators and discusses the critical issues facing all community banks during this time. Every year she also attends the CBAI Call on Washington, where she and other community bankers charge the Hill to inform Illinois members of Congress about their most important issues. McKee is also the chairman of CBAI’s Foundation for Community Banking, which gives annual scholarships for high-school seniors to help deserving students further their education. This year at the annual CBAI Convention, the foundation held a karaoke fundraiser, and through the hard work of McKee and the foundation board, they raised more than $17,000 for the foundation. McKee has attended various other CBAI events where she represented the Career Development Division in the highest regard.
Auditions set for Dec. 29 and 30 HENRY — River Valley Players Community Dinner Theatre will be opening its 43rd season with the Tony Award-winning musical “Wonderful Town.” Based on the play “My Sister Eileen,” this hidden gem features a soaring score composed by Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story, Candide, On The Town) and smart, funny lyrics that were written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (On the Town, Bells Are Ringing, Singin’ In the Rain-screenplay). Set in Greenwich Village in the summer of 1935, “Wonderful Town” tells the story of Ruth and Eileen, two sisters, who leave behind their mundane lives in Ohio in pursuit of their dreams. Chock-full of swinging show tunes, breathtaking choreography, and effervescent charm, Wonderful Town captures the thrill of chas-
ing one’s dreams like no other musical. Auditions will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, and 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at St. John XXIII Community Center, 1301 Second St. in Henry. HENRY — A Christmas potluck luncheon was enjoyed by the members of the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR on Dec. 6 at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse. Regent Dolores Dace then conducted the regular meeting of the chapter. Reports were given on the members’ Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at the John P. Cromwell Memorial in the Henry Park and the Family Reading Night on Nov. 20 at the Henry Public Library, encouraging family reading time in order to instill successful reading habits in children. A thank-you note from Freedom House acknowledged the items donated under the auspices of Carol Byrd, Women’s Issues chairwoman. Reports of chairwomen noted the American Heritage cookbook sales, featuring historical figurines and family recipes, which will enable the chapter to contribute to community affairs. An American Indians Minute featured information about Chief Senachwine. Reports were also shared on the Constitution, the U.S. flag, literacy promotion, public relations, DAR schools, and plans for

the rededication of the tombstone of Elizabeth Wickoff, daughter of a Revolutionary War soldier, at the Henry Cemetery. DAR Service for Veterans chairwoman Judy Schwiderski reminded attendees to commemorate Pearl Harbor and the military personnel and civilians lost there 78 years ago. A moment of silence was also observed for those attacked in Pensacola and in Pearl Harbor during the week. Delegates were elected to the Illinois State Conference in Bloomington in April and to the Continental Congress in Washington, D.C., in June. The program featured a ceremony to remember the Revolutionary War patriots of the members who shared information on the militia or Continental service or maritime service of their ancestors as well as the family and town/state information of the men. Remembering DAR ancestors is a major interest of President General Denise Doring VanBuren whose blog provided the ceremony. There will be no chapter meeting in January. The next meeting will be Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at the

The Putnam County Library District has announced upcoming events for January.
All libraries
• Closed Wednesday, Jan. 1, for New Year’s Day. Will reopen on Thursday, Jan. 2, at regular hours. • Closed Monday, Jan. 20, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Hennepin Park District will host holiday activities
HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will be sponsoring holiday activities. On Fridays, Dec 27 and Jan. 3, and on Monday, Jan. 6, there will be free swim for Hennepin and Hennepin Township residents. On Monday, Dec. 23, Gerrie’s Craft Corner will be there from noon to 1 p.m. Participants will make holiday crafts during this time. On Thursday, Dec. 26, there will be kids bingo from noon to 1 p.m. Par-
ticipants will play bingo for a variety of prizes. Monday, Dec. 30, will be a Movie and Popcorn Day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will show “Abominable” on their big-screen TV. Popcorn and a beverage will be served during the movie. The cost of the activities is free to Hennepin and Hennepin Township. All other areas will be $5 per activity. All participants in these activities are invited to stay after the
activity for open swim from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. Children under 12 may stay up to three hours if not accompanied by an adult. Children under 45 inches tall must have an adult with them in the pool. invited. The menu will vary between pancakes, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and bacon, cheese Danish, French toast and other items.

DANVILLE — Kelly Raineri of Peru was one of 16 students recognized as a new member of the Lakeview College of Nursing Developing Honor Society during the end of the fall 2019 semester. In order to be considered for the
Lakeview College of Nursing Developing Honor Society, each student was required to be within the top onethird of their graduating class, hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and demonstrate excellence
in scholarship. Lakeview College of Nursing Honor Society is a developing chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, a prestigious international nursing honor society.
