County looks to improve finances

Treasurer gives report on where the budget stands BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media HENNEPIN — Putnam County Board is inching toward a more balanced budget, but they aren’t quite there yet. Treasurer Kevin Kunkel had reported Sept. 9 that the board is operating with about $20,000 less in the general fund than this time last year, but he said once the second installment of taxes hits the books, the county will start to make up some of the shortfall. August ended with $123,189 in the general fund for the county. Kunkel

said he hadn’t received an expected disbursement from the state for video gaming revenue or a probation grant. He’ll be contacting the state about the gambling monies, he said. For fiscal year 2019, the county currently has a deficit of just over $500,000. Expenditures so far have been just under $1.8 million, but revenues have come in at just under $2.3 million. Kunkel said he’s expecting about $300,000 from property taxes and another $75,000 from the upcoming tax sale. He said he’s looking to combine with another county, perhaps Marshall or Bureau, on the tax sale to save money. County departments have been on a mission to slash budgets over the past months in order to get the

However, severe illness including meningitis or even death can occur in rare cases.” People older than 50 or those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus. Most people (eight out of 10) infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms. • Febrile illness (fever) in some people. About one in five people who are infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. Junior high athletes host colorful doubleheader as a cancer fundraiser BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com MCNABB — The staff, students, families, and even opponents of the Putnam County Junior High Pumas baseball and softball teams recently helped support cancer research and awareness by playing a simultaneous doubleheader where there was only one color that mattered — pink. Putnam County Junior High Principal Mike Olson explained the games against Fieldcrest Middle School were part of a fundraiser to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and to help raise awareness about the disease. Other activities of the day included a raffle for a variety of gift baskets and a donation-based “Pink Day” for teachers who wanted to support the cause through their choice of jeans and pink clothing. “Events like this help teach our kids about community service and to think about what others may be going through,” Olson said. At the beginning of the game, a ceremonial first pitch was thrown by members of a local family who recently lost their loved one to cancer. In addition, both teams wore uniforms with pink logos and numbers,

Olson explained that when he called Fieldcrest Middle School, they were supportive of the idea and also ordered specially made “Swing for the Cure” T-shirts in honor of the cause. in her hair to complete the themed look. The Pumas boys baseball team defeated Fieldcrest 9-7, and the girls softball team lost to the visitors 16-11. This is the second year for PCJH’s pink games. However, Olson said, this is the first year where the event was schoolwide, and he commended the supportive enthusiasm of both students and staff.

“Everyone has done a great job of helping to bring this all together, and it couldn’t be done without them,” he said. Items in the gift baskets included donated products and gift cards from local businesses, including Sally Sue’s Coffee of Magnolia and Spratt’s Tap of Hennepin. Many baskets were themed and included beauty products and a salt lamp, specialty cleaning products, scratchers, candy, movies, theater gift cards, hot sauces, baseball snacks and a Wiffle ball set, a headset and Playstation gift card, and more. Olson reported the total raised from concession sales, the raffle for the gift baskets and the staff paying to wear jeans and pink was $415, which will be donated to help support the Komen Foundation. According to the Komen Foundation’s website, in 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen organization and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has grown into the world’s largest non-profit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer. The foundation has invested more than $2.9 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries.

The event includes an address by keynote speaker Patricia Schou, executive director of the Princeton-based Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN); a catered luncheon; an opportunity to hear from all the 2019 Women of Distinction winners; an awards ceremony; door prizes; networking opportunities; a goodie bag; and more. The public is invited. “We are very excited about our keynote speaker, Pat Schou, who was previously honored as a Woman of Distinction back in 2013,” Dunn said. Schou leads Illinois’ first statewide critical access hospital network, which was established in 2003 and comprises 57 critical access and rural hospitals. Last year, ICAHN, which has 22 employees, moved into a brand new office at 1945 Van’s Way in Princeton. She is also executive director of the Illinois Rural Community Care Organization and has more than 40 years of clinical and rural hospital administrative experience. Schou is president-elect of the National Rural Health Association. LADD — Katherine “Katie” Larios, 32, of Ladd passed away at 11:07 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, following a brief illness due to cancer. She was born Sept. 21, 1986, in Peru to James and Theresa (Krogulski) Wiesbrock. She married John Larios on Sept. 14, 2013, at Nativity of Our Lord in Spring Valley. Katie earned her degree from Illinois Central College but was blessed with a son and stayed home to be a loving mother to John Jr. Her family describes her as “craftsy” and always thinking of others before herself. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. Katie was also an avid Chicago White Sox and Blackhawks fan. Chief Senachwine DAR Chapter holds opening meeting HENRY — Following a Native American flute call by Nancy Gillfillan, Regent Dolores Dace called to order the first meeting of the 2019-20 year of the Chief Senachwine Chapter NSDAR on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Henry Public Library. The opening ritual, pledge to the flag of the United States of America, American’s creed and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution followed. Dace extended a special welcome to new member Nina Herridge of Lacon. Three members of the Herridge family have also joined the chapter, Molly Kercheval, and Stephanie and Megan Herridge. Their lineage descends from Revolutionary War patriot Peter Shively of Pennsylvania. Voted as an associate member was Linda Poundstone of Illini Chapter in Ottawa. Dace reported that remembering veterans and noting the anniversary of women’s suffrage will be areas of special interest for the Illinois State Organization for the next two years. Nancy Gillfillan was announced as the Illinois DAR Literacy promotion chairman. Under Chairman Sheila Schrowang’s leadership, the chapter will remember Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, with displays at the Henry Grade School and the Henry Library. Members celebrated by joining “Bells Across America” and ringing bells for two minutes at 3 p.m. Sept. 17, known as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. A preview of the chapter cookbook was shared. The 160-recipe book, also featuring photos of

American Heritage figurines, will be available from any member in October. Reports were given by chairmen of other DAR committees as follow: Flag of the United States of America, DAR Magazine, DAR School, Public Relations, Veterans and Women’s Issues. Chapter members attended the Springfield location of DAR Days on Sept. 13, and will attend the District II meeting in LaSalle on Sept. 28, followed by donating items and also playing bingo with the vets at the LaSalle Veterans Home. Members voted to rededicate the grave of Elizabeth Wikoff at the Henry Cemetery. Elizabeth was the daughter of Revolutionary patriot Sgt. John Wikoff of New Jersey. As community involvement time for the DAR’s National Day of Service, members will collect items for the Henry Food Pantry and will also work toward nominating a Henry group for a Community Service Award. Gillfillan was honored by the chapter and named an honorary chapter regent. She was the chapter’s organizing regent and served as chapter regent from its inception to July 2019. Following adjournment, American Indians Chairman Lura Wheeler Hamilton shared information about the Wheeler private collection of Indian artifacts. Members then traveled to the location for a guided tour of the artifacts. History of the area once inhabited by Chief Senachwine’s band of Potawatomie Indians was also presented by George Wheeler and Lura Wheeler Hamilton.

IVSO opens 70th season with new conductor, Dr. Daniel Sommerville LASALLE — Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra Board President Andrea Kowalski welcomes a new conductor. After a year-long search, Dr. Daniel Sommerville was chosen from a field of talented conductors to be the 18th music director and conductor for the IVSO’s 70th anniversary season. He has an exciting season planned, which includes music from past decades and special soloists Chicago Symphony Orchestra trumpeter John Hagstrom and Rachel Barton Pine, who also performed for IVSO’s 50th- and 60th-season celebrations, plus “The Nutcracker” ballet in December. The orchestra’s first season was 1949-1950. Dr. Sommerville will strive to continue to fulfill the IVSO’s mission: to entertain and inspire the community by performing live orchestral music. He has programmed the following concerts for the upcoming season: • Showtime! — Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at Illinois Valley Community College Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre. The concert will feature guest artist Jennie Judd, soprano, on music from Broadway, with a special tribute to Marvin Hamlisch, plus music by Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rogers, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and more. • New Beginnings — Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. at LaSalle-Peru High School Matthiessen Auditorium.
