River Valley players casting for roles in upcoming play
HENRY — River Valley players will be casting for roles in “The Church Basement Ladies / Rise Up O Men” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, and 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Saint John’s XXIII Community Center, 1301 Second St., Henry. Performance dates are Nov. 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. Rehearsals will begin the week of Sept. 13. “Rise up O Men” gives the gents a chance to shine in this fun filled installment of the Church Basement Ladies musical comedy series about a Lutheran church in Minnesota, circa 1964. They are looking to round out the cast of six with the following roles: Carl, a typical Minnesota/Scandinavian/Yooper (A farmer and an allaround handyman; traditional in his thinking. He also plays Roger Herbranson, a fast talking salesman.) Elroy Engleson (Karin’s husband) The local John Deere dealer that is very charismatic .Looking for someone that commands the stage and can adapt easily to country-western style music. He also will play the role of Arlene Jeppesen, a middle age church kitchen matriarch with marginal cooking skills. Acting versatility is required for the entire ensemble cast. All characters have solo lines and are featured in most all of the musical numbers and scenes. Singing, acting, and comedic timing is a must for this show. Minimal dance ability will be required. River Valley is looking for gentleman that
can adapt to sing harmony and have comedic timing. Minnesota/Scandinavian/Yooper accent is a plus but not required at

NEWS BRIEFS Blood drive set for Aug. 16 at McNabb Fire Department
MCNABB — Putnam County Methodist Churches will host the next American Red Cross community blood drive in McNabb on Monday, Aug. 16. The blood drive will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. at Goldasich Hall in the McNabb Fire Department on Illinois Route 89, south of McNabb. The blood drive offers a chance for repeat and first-time donors to save lives with their donation of blood. All blood types save lives. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. COVID-19 has caused closure of many blood drives, heightening the immediate need for donors as blood shortages continue

khieronymus@bcrnews.com PERU — The Pink Ribbon Club of the Illinois Valley gathered and celebrated as a group on Wednesday, July 28. The group was excited to host the Sauk Valley Chapter Pink Heals Fire Truck with Brian Tribley and his wife as featured speakers. They spent time
visiting those who are in their breast cancer journey, allowing survivors to sign their truck and “travel” with them in spreading hope for survivorship. The Pink Ribbon Club of the Illinois Valley provides an opportunity for survivors to learn about wellness throughout their cancer journey. The group meetings also provide an evening of food, laughter, education and conversation to support the
survivors who are currently in treatment along with those who have completed treatment and are managing their wellness years after treatment. The meetings are held at the First Congregational Church in Peru. Due to COVID concerns, the meeting schedule has been changed and will be guided by current regulations. The truck was invited by the Pink Ribbon Club of the Illinois Valley Support Group. The club is celebrating its eight year together and a collective of many years of survivors of breast cancer. The Pink Heals Inc. Sauk Valley chapter is in its fourth year. The fire truck makes appearances in parades, events, fire departments, festivals and uses the color pink to represent love and families as it provides a boost to those suffering from illness.

Messina has been an active supporter since the organization started in 2011, and she’s an advocate for the arts culture locally and internationally, according to the organization. She has been a featured contributor and content provider for cultural and business publications for the last 30 years, and she’s translated Italian to English for the U.S. military, the Italian judicial system and international businesses throughout the world. “I appreciate the NCI Artworks board’s confidence in me and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to carry on the important work of this great arts advocacy organization,” Messina said in a press release. “I’m especially grateful for the guidance of former NCI Artworks executive direc-
tors, particularly Chris Coughlin, whose tireless work over the past decade has built NCI Artworks into a strong and effective arts advocacy organization for La Salle, Bureau and Putnam counties.” Messina also managed e-commerce and retail websites for the Starved Rock Lodge and Marketplace and worked as the community liaison for the Illinois Department of Transportation. The Riverbend Food Band from Davenport, Iowa, will distribute a semi truck load of food at DePue’s lakefront to clients of Hall Township Food Pantry in addition to any families in need, regardless of where they reside.
No proof of income is required to receive food, however organizers will limit food pickup to one person per household. Sign in will be required in order to keep track of numbers for Feeding America. Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. with food distribution beginning at 10 a.m. During the distribution, the IDPH will make available free COVID vaccinations for anyone needing one. Both
Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available from 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-ins will be accepted. Those receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine must be 18 years or older. The Pfizer vaccine will be available for those 12 years and older. Anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by a pareant or guardian. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a single dose; those who opt for the Pfizer
vaccine will need to return to DePue for a second dose from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 11. Jesse White encourages organ/tissue donation encouraged for virtual National Minority Donor Awareness Month
Secretary of State Jesse White is hosting a virtual National Minority Donor Awareness Month, “Wave Away the Waiting,” to promote organ/ tissue donation for multicultural communities at www.LifeGoesOn.com. “We continue to work to end the wait for those in need of organ donation,” said White. “Unfortunately, minorities are in the greatest need of organ transplants, yet they donate at a
lower rate. I encourage everyone to register to become an organ/tissue donor to help give the gift of life to someone in need.” Nationally, people of color comprise 54 percent of the waiting list for organ transplants; however, this year they accounted for only 35 percent of those who donated organs, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.
According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network in Illinois: • There are 1,428 African Americans on the waiting list, but in 2020 only 129 African Americans became donors. • There are 784 Hispanic Americans on the waiting list, but last year only 71 Hispanic Americans became donors. • There are 228 Asian Americans on

Illinois Valley Community College’s choir invites singers from the community to join its group Monday evenings. Choir director Jenilyn Roether said the group meets 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays (except holidays) in Room D223 beginning Aug. 23. “Anyone 16 and older may join,” said Roether. “No experience is necessary, but a love of singing is.” The fall semester culminates in a winter vocal concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6. Cheryl Roelfsema wrapped up her tenure Thursday at Illinois Valley Community College after more than a decade of enhancing the college’s facilities. The vice president for business services and finance and former controller and accounting instructor oversaw some of the largest construction projects in the college’s 97-year history. She supervised construction of the $30.5 million Peter Miller Community Technology Center and related projects, the Truck Driver Training facility, Student Center, cyber café, $1 million renovations of the life and physical science labs, a new ag storage facility and more recently replacement of the gymnasium bleachers – not to mention dozens of ongoing maintenance projects. “Cheryl has had an immense impact on IVCC with her steady and thoughtful leadership,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.
Roelfsema has worked alongside Corcoran all her 13 years as VP. “We’ve accomplished so much the past decade and much of the credit goes to Cheryl,” Corcoran said. “Her sound financial sense has led to hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funding for construction and maintenance we might not otherwise have received.” In addition, Roelfsema’s business office routinely earned distinguished budget presentation awards and certificates of achievement for excellence in financial reporting. In retirement, Roelfsema will enjoy her rural Marseilles farm while continuing to show sheep, ride her quarter horse Just Plain Lazy in competitions, and attend classic car shows with husband John. Former Streator High School Superintendent Matt Seaton joined the college June 17 as Roelfsema’s replacement.

Car show, family fun day held in Granville GRANVILLE — This year’s Granville Days celebration was held Aug. 6 and 7. Friday’s events included a cruise-in car show, with music provided by 3D Sound. There were also local food and beer vendors. Members of the Putnam County High School Theatre dressed as Disney characters for pictures, “The Unique Twist” balloon artist was available from 5 to 8 p.m., and there was a performance by the Panteras
and Little Panteras. The Granville Fire Department handed out smoke detectors, and the Standard Fire Department presented their flag. The evening ended with a street dance with music by The Joe Stamm Band. Saturday’s events included bingo, water fights, a utility vehicle display featuring K9 demonstrations, kids activities and food vendors, and Diligent DJ Services featuring DJ Tyler Goatz.
