Preschool screening Aug. 2-3 for Putnam County Schools

GRANVILLE — L.E.A.S.E. and the Putnam County School District will offer a preschool screening on Monday, Aug. 2, and Tuesday, Aug. 3. The screenings will be held during the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Putnam County Primary School in Granville. A parent must accompany their child to the screening. Putnam County children who will be 3 years old on or before Aug. 2 are eligible for screening. It will cover small and large muscle development, speech, language, hearing, vision, cognition and social skills. Parents, who have other developmental concerns about their child can discuss those during the parent interview. All Putnam County families with age-eligible preschoolers are encouraged to take advantage of this screening.

Results from the screening will be used to determine a child’s eligibility for the early childhood program at the primary school building in Granville. The preschool program (Preschool for All) is a state funded grant program from the Illinois Board of Education. The preschool program offers developmentally appropriate experiences for young children to strengthen their skills for success later on in school. The program includes hands-on activities presented in a positive and encouraging environment. Each child brings his/her own experiences to the program, which also helps to enhance the program. Parents interested in making an appointment for the preschool screening can call the school at 815-882-2800, ext. 5.

New Putnam County Superintendent Clayton Theisinger shares goals ahead of upcoming school year

HENNEPIN — In the midst of a year challenged by the pandemic, Putnam County Schools is undergoing a transfer in leadership. Dr. Clayton Theisinger is taking over the reins from outgoing Superintendent Carl Carlson. “For me, the past few weeks have been filled with eagerness and anticipation, and I am honored to write to you today as Superintendent of Putnam County Community Unit School District #535,” Theisinger wrote in a letter to district families. “After spending the last five years as Principal of PCHS, I know this community and its families carry an extraordinary enthusiasm for providing every student in all PC schools with the best learning opportunities possible. I am excited to serve with the Board of Education, teachers and staff, families, and community to build off the past and recent achievements and elevate the possibilities for all students to reach their greatest potential in the many years ahead.” Theisinger began his career in education began at LaSalle-Peru Township High School as a special education teacher, then transitioned to administration at LPHS as the director of teaching and learning. Shortly after, Theisinger was provided the opportunity to serve as the high school principal in Putnam County, where he says he immediately grew to love the students, staff, schools and community. “These experiences have only strengthened my basic philosophy of education — schools serve to

provide students with the opportunities, experiences, knowledge, and skills that allow them to pursue their individual goals and aspirations” he said. “Beyond the school doors, my life is centered on my family. My wife (Alison) works for the local hospital system and I am the father to two amazing children (Millie and Mac). They too share their appreciation and excitement for this journey ahead. “As superintendent, I look to the past 18 months as a starting point for how we begin to move our schools in a forward direction. The pandemic has drastically changed the manner in which we have operated, but it has not changed our purpose or focus on bettering learning opportunities for students.” In the weeks and months ahead, Theisinger said his primary goal is to continue to learn about the PC schools and community from the perspective of his new role. “I will stay informed on the updates from our state and beyond to collaborate with our Board of Education and community in appropriately navigating our schools closer to normalcy while ensuring the continued safety of all students and staff. Along the way, you can expect continued communication from the district and me to keep everyone informed,” he said. “I anticipate sending more messages on a frequent basis in the next few weeks. I am optimistic about the growth of our students and schools in the many years ahead and look forward to seeing you around

the schools and community.” At this time, Theisinger said the district awaits guidance from the state regarding any requirements for COVID-19 protocols for the new school year. “They have been silent this summer on what will be required of schools in the upcoming year and Clayton Theisinger what we can return to local control,” he said. “From pandemic-related guidance to curriculum considerations, we will have a lot of information to sift through in the next few weeks. As this information is considered and our Board of Education makes decisions, I will be in continued communication with families regarding the year.”

Mareta Ravioli of Leonore is increasing the price of its products to recoup the rising costs of the flour and meat in its pasta dishes “in order to keep the quality of our product,” plant manager Steve Villarreal said. After giving five weeks notice of the price change, Villarreal said every local store he stocks in LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties said OK to the increase, from smaller, locally-owned grocery stores to bigger stores such as HyVee and Kroger, except the local Walmarts. “Walmart shelves will remain empty until they can adjust the price,” Villarreal said. “That’s about 25% of our business. We can’t survive without changing our prices.” Villarreal said he went through the same process with Walmart seven and 13 years ago, and it took about a month of lost sales for the issue to be resolved. An 11-ounce bag of Mareta’s frozen beef tortellini

sold for $3.98 Thursday at Walmart in Streator, compared with $4.28 at Kroger across the street. Walmart’s corporate office did not respond to a request for comment. Mareta posted Wednesday night about the situation with Walmart on its Facebook page, drawing 306 comments, 458 shares and 677 likes as of Thursday night. Mareta has been in business since 1956, beginning as a grocery store in Leonore. Villarreal said his grandfather started making handmade pasta in the basement, employing dozens of teenagers. In the 1970s, the family brought in a machine to make the tortellini, known locally as “ravs.” Villarreal, who drives the Mareta distribution truck, is the third generation to work for the family business that employs four full-time employees, including his mother, Martha, his brother Michael and one part-time worker. Being a family business, he returns from his route and does the dishes at the factory at 303 Gary St. in Leonore, which has a population of about 118. “I’ve been on the route since I was 5 years old,” Villarreal said. In a good week, Villarreal said the business can produce 4,000 pounds of frozen pasta. He said his

products are one of the most popular in the frozen foods section at Walmart, and he restocks the freezers weekly. Villarreal said what is frustrating is that Walmart recently pledged to buy from small business, including stocking more products made in the USA by 2023, but he said this is an example of a big chain not being reasonable with a small business. “The bigger vendors may be able to put up with it, but we’re a small, family business.”

Demand for computer aided design technicians has led to opportunities for Illinois Valley Community College students entering a career featuring 3D modeling this fall. “The need for drafters, sometimes called detailers, designers or CAD technicians, has intensified,” said Dorene Data, IVCC CAD instructor and program coordinator. “Our graduates are easily employed locally,” she said. “Most employers are having a hard time filling these positions.” Data recommends that interested students start with Computer Aided Drafting I-AutoCAD (CAD1200-01), 10 a.m. to 11:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Aug. 18 or an online version (CAD1200-100). Additional offerings include Computer Aided Design I, which includes 3D modeling and 3D printing. CAD 2200-01 meets 1 to 1:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Aug. 18. There are no prerequisites for the beginning drafting or design courses. IVCC offers a basic, 12-credit CAD

certificate, larger certificates in specified fields such as architecture or electrical and an associate degree that covers most engineering fields. “Another appealing program is our 3+1 with Northern Illinois University, where a student completes three years at IVCC and one online through NIU and earns a bachelor’s in industrial technology,” Data said. Classes are offered in face-to-face, online and blended formats, and the CAD software is free to download and work with at home. Technicians can expect career growth within a company. “They will work hand-in-hand with engineers in many fields,” Data said. “Although their main job might be technical drawing, they usually become an integral part of a company’s design team. They often have many other duties besides drafting.” Engineers, manufacturing personnel, electricians and welders also benefit from CAD. DAR marks 14th Amendment to Constitution

This July, Chief Senachwine Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is celebrating the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment. Passed by the Senate on June 8, 1866, and ratified two years later, on July 9, 1868, the 14th Amendment of the Constitution granted citizenship to all persons “born or naturalized in the United States,” including formerly enslaved people. The amendment also provided all citizens with “equal protection under the laws,” extending the provisions of the Bill of Rights to the states. Prior to the Fourteenth

Amendment, the Bill of Rights only applied against abuses by the national government. After the 14th Amendment’s ratification, these protections applied equally against the states. The amendment authorized the government to punish states that abridged citizens’ right to vote by proportionally reducing their representation in Congress. It banned those who “engaged in insurrection” against the United States from holding any civil, military or elected office without the approval of two-thirds of the House and Senate. The amendment prohibited the

United States and former Confederate states from repaying debts incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, and prohibited compensation for the loss or emancipation of enslaved people. Finally, it granted Congress the power to enforce this amendment, a provision that led to the passage of other landmark legislation in the 20th century, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In order to regain federal representation, Congress required former Confederate states to ratify the 14th

Amendment. North Carolina, Louisiana, and finally South Carolina ratified the amendment after initially rejecting it. Following South Carolina’s ratification vote on July 9, the 14th Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution is a living document that ensures each citizen of the freedoms Americans cherish and appreciate. It was written to protect every American from abuse of power by government. The commitment of the NSDAR is to encourage study and educate the public about the Constitution.

‘Delete the text or email:’ Secretary of State says of scams

FBI, state officials warn of text message scams The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office and the Springfield office of the FBI are recirculating a June 11 news release after Illinois residents were hit with another round of text messages trying to defraud them. The text messages that have circulated much of this week read something like “Illinois Department of Transportation Drivers License Waiver Validation. Please validate your details below for urgent certification,” followed by a bit.ly link that leads to a page asking for personal information that should never be shared. “I have zero tolerance for fraudsters who prey on people in desperate times,” said Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. “My office is working with the Illinois Attorney General’s office to protect Illinoisans from falling victim to these fraudu-

lent schemes.” White warned the public to beware of scammers sending unsolicited text messages or emails claiming to be from his office and said his office will never request personal information such as a social security number in a text message or an email. “Delete the text or email,” White said. “Do not click on them and do not provide any of your personal information.” White encourages people to take steps to protect their personal information: Delete emails and texts that promise or offer access to driver’s licenses or state ID cards, and do not click on any links contained in such emails or text messages, as they may place malware on your devices. Hang up on any calls, including robocalls, that ask individuals to take immediate action or provide personally-identifiable information, such as your Social Security number or bank account number. Ask to use other types of identifi-

ers besides your Social Security number. Keep your software up to date, including your phone and computer operating systems and antivirus protection programs. Most phones, computers and antivirus software can be
