All aboard the PC Book Bus! Program encourages summer reading BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — The “Summer Slide” is a term well-known among educators. It refers to the decline in academic ability experienced by children during their summer vacation. To help combat this loss, the Putnam County School District regularly visits local parks with the PC Book Bus. It’s the third year for the program, and according to coordinator and paraprofessional Carey Schorn, it’s more popular than ever. “We sent a note home to parents requesting books they no longer wanted, and we had a huge response,” she said. With a busload of books received, help was needed to organize them. Schorn said one of the “high school helpers” took on the task of sorting and labeling them by reading level into one of the many totes. Each week, Schorn and first-grade teacher Morgan Himelick load the books into the bus and head into the communities of Granville, Hennepin, McNabb and Magnolia. She added the district has experimented somewhat with the days they travel, and to which location, but the program has largely remained consistent since its inception. Schorn said the biggest challenge to the program was something local farmers will certainly understand — having good weather. She was inspired to help begin the program after attending an educational conference where a school district had a similar program, but with a dedicated mobile library. The PC Book Bus may be smaller, but it’s just as effective in

Activities: Kids can get snacks, listen to a story read to them, and board the Book Bus to select up to three books to take home and read. Organizers: Carey Schorn, coordinator and paraprofessional, and Morgan Himelick, first-grade teacher. reaching its goal. “We already had the bus, all the books were donated, and the kitchen staff at each school helps provide the snacks from what was left over from the school year, so it’s been a very inexpensive program to offer our children,” Schorn said. As the bus pulled into Granville’s Hopkins Park, many children were playing on the playground

equipment as they waited. They all quickly gathered under a shady tree as Schorn and Himelick passed out snacks before they were read the story of “The Big Bad Bubble.” Following story time, the children lined up to enter the bus. They can choose up to three books to take home to read. The books can be returned at the following week’s visit, or when they return to school in the fall. Kristen VanWingerden, mother of Will, who will enter the second grade next school year, enjoys the visits of the bus. “He really likes to read, so he gets very excited about it,” she said. The PC Book Bus will be traveling again each Tuesday, on July 9, 16, 23, and 30. It will be in Granville from 3 to 3:30 p.m., in Hennepin from 3:45 to 4:15 p.m., in McNabb from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and in Magnolia from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. “This helps fill the summer reading gap, but we also just love to see our students again and they often get to see their friends there, as well,” Schorn said with a smile.

Public defender’s solicitation case continued SHAW MEDIA OTTAWA — The Putnam County public defender charged in a LaSalle County prostitution sting had his case continued to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7. Roger Bolin, 65, of Hennepin was charged with solicitation of sex

along with eight others during the March sting. Bolin also is charged with battery. Police say in court records Bolin g r abb e d a p o l i c e informant’s shoulder

and tried to pull her toward him. Bolin also is said to have made phone calls with the informant to discuss rates for various sexual acts, records show. Bolin was not present June 27 in court as Judge H. Chris Ryan granted the continuance.

Country music concert highlights M-P Fair

Dylan Schneider slated to perform on July 11 HENRY — A summer tradition for nearly a century, the 98th annual Marshall-Putnam Fair will take place Wednesday, July 10, through Sunday, July 14. The fair’s longest-running event, harness racing, will kick off in front of the grandstand at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 10. This year’s event again features “Pick-a-Winner,” sponsored by Kenyon’s Place. Beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, the fair will present what’s been requested for years — a country concert. The show, sponsored by MidAmerica National Bank, will be headlined by Dylan Schneider. Schneider has been named “country music’s next

rising star” by Billboard. Before Schneider takes the stage, Austin Burke, a recent guest performer at the Grand Ole Opry, will open the show. Back by popular demand, the demolition derby will be held Friday, July 12. Prior to the main event, which will start at 7 p.m., a Power Wheel derby, for children ages 10 and younger, will start at 6:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, Lucas Oil will present “America’s Pull,” part of the Pro Pulling League Champions Tour. The event will draw fans and competitors from throughout Illinois and the rest of the nation. At 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, the M-P Antique and Stock Tractor Pull will begin. Local owners of antique and stock tractors will challenge the sled to see who can pull it all the way. This event is presented with free admission. A painless transition Granville dentists are smiling after an ideal ownership change BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com

RANVILLE — Dentists Robert Dawe and Evan Fiedler are both well aware of how fortunate they are to be in such an ideal professional situation. They both get to serve their hometown; have a dedicated, experienced staff; a thriving practice; and have had an almost unheard-of opportunity as partners. Dawe was thinking years ahead when he began discussing a future in dentistry with the younger Fiedler. The two have known each other since before Fiedler graduated from Putnam County High School in 2001. Having built his dental practice from scratch, Dawe knew he’d eventually retire and need someone to continue, so the two worked out well in advance how their careers would proceed together. “We know exactly how lucky we are to be in

this sort of situation. You just don’t hear about things like this, especially in a small town; it’s like winning the lottery,” Dawe said of their friendly professional relationship. With the benefit of having a solid career plan laid before him, Fiedler began the work required to receive his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign. After that, he went on to receive his dental degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in May 2009. He finally returned home to join Granville Dental LLC in June 2009. “It certainly doesn’t feel like a decade has passed. This has been a great experience, and I’ve had a lot to learn from everyone here,” Fiedler said. Dawe began the gradual transition of ownership of the practice a few years ago. Bit by bit, the office’s administrative oversight was transferred to Fiedler. The transition was recently completed, and the two dentists have essentially changed positions.

Fiedler is now the owner of Granville Dental and the primary dentist. Dawe can now begin to enjoy a slower paced schedule with fewer responsibilities, while comforted by the knowledge his practice is in the best hands. IVCC anticipates balanced operating budget Finance committee gets first look at spending plan SHAW MEDIA OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s administration will present a balanced operating budget at its Thursday, July 11, board meeting, the board’s audit-finance committee learned at its June 24 meeting. The committee got the first look at the tentative 2020 budget. “We’ve kept costs in line with enrollments while looking for new programs and investing in facility upgrades,” said Vice President for Business Services and Finance Cheryl Roelfsema in a news release. The college is hopeful the recent hiring of five new faculty will rejuvenate existing programs and bolster enrollments, according to the release. At its June 13 meeting, the board approved appointments in welding, industrial maintenance, agriculture and nursing. An automotive instructor was approved in May. Facility

Olivero to leave IVCC Board; federal agency where she works called for resignation OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College trustee Melissa Olivero of Peru will resign from the board effective July 11. Olivero was elected to two six-year terms in April 2009 and April 2015, and served as board chairwoman from May 2013 through April 2017. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said the board has 60 days from the July 11 meeting to appoint a successor to fill the remaining two years of Olivero’s term. After that meeting, IVCC will announce procedures for applying for the opening. upgrades include a storage and routine maintenance building for the ag program. I am proud of the many accomplishments of the college and its faculty, administration and staff. “The board has faced some very challenging situations during my term, and we have always faced them with integrity, thoughtfulness and honesty. “I am humbled that the citizens of the district twice elected me to represent their interests on the board. I hope the board will consider selecting the next board member from the LaSalle-Peru area.”

A total of 131 students paid only the $5 registration fee thanks to IVCC’s tuition waiver for Free and Reduced Lunch-eligible students. All other dual credit students receive a 25 percent tuition discount.

GREGG CARR the Herdsman upon graduation, and married Linda in September of that year. In September of 1976, Linda and Gregg moved home to work on the family farm, and in 1979, he and his brother, Gail, became partners and bought the family farm from their parents. They farmed together for 38 years and retired from the farm at the end of 2014. In 1983, Gregg and Linda were blessed with a son, Jason, and five years later were doubly blessed with a daughter, Heather. In 1999, Gregg made a dramatic change in his life and asked God to remove his compulsion to drink. God intervened and Gregg joined Alcoholics Anonymous to help maintain sobriety and help others to achieve it, too. He was a regular at King’s House, and along with several others, he co-founded an AA chapter in Granville. He learned the practice of living in the solution instead of in the problem, and it prepared him for his next obstacle in life. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer on Easter Sunday of 2015 and began treatments at the Holden Cancer Unit in Iowa City. He took this time to

start his blog and wrote a book about his battles with alcoholism and cancer. His positive attitude towards life inspired many followers. He volunteered for the McNabb-Magnolia Ambulance service and later as an EMT with Putnam County EMS. He was a trustee and president of Putnam County Education Foundation, president of Marshall-Putnam Pork Producers, director of M-P County Fair Board, vice president of Putnam County School Board and secretary of McNabb Grain Company Board. He also was a host on WRVY radio in Henry for over a year. He also worked diligently alongside other family farmers to fight the corporate takeover of American agriculture and was instrumental in getting several laws passed in that regard. Gregg and his wife belonged to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hennepin. Gregg sang in the choir at St. Mary’s in Henry for many years. Gregg loved life, and he loved helping others. He believed that equal rights was a God-given right for every person and lived by that wonderful line attributed to Jesus: “Whatsoever you

HENNEPIN — Gregg Carr, 65, left this earth on Friday, June 28, 2019, for his eternal glory in Heaven, leaving behind the cancer that he fought so positively and valiantly for four years. His faith, his family, his friends, and the doctors and nurses at the University of Iowa kept him going well beyond his life expectancy, and he inspired so many along the way with his words of faith and humor in his blog called Faith and Laughter from Gregg. Gregg was born in Spring Valley on Sept. 26, 1953, to Herbert and Hertha (Ritterbush) Carr. Growing up, he learned the value and importance of hard work, family and faith from his mother and father. He loved working on the family farm yet, his writing and speaking talents led him to pursue other goals. He was active in 4-H, speech and FFA at Putnam County High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois. Every summer between high school and college graduation, he interned for the Hampshire Herdsman in Peoria, where he met the love of his life, Linda Dodson. HENRY — The Marshall-Putnam Fair will present its “Salute to Seniors” on Thursday, July 11. Hosted and sponsored by Marshall County Circuit Judge Mike McCuskey, retired Putnam County Circuit Judge Scott Shore and their wives, the annual program is additionally sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Marshall and Putnam counties, as well as Heritage Health and Country Comfort. At 8 a.m. the doors to the Hunt Building will open and guests will be greeted by local and state officeholders from the two counties. The music will begin at 9 a.m. and will again be provided by the Henry Torpedo Boys. They’re returning by popular demand and are known for their fun and musical talent. The free show will last until 11 a.m., and will include refreshments and many door prizes donated by local residents and businesses. Marshall-Putnam Fair will kick off 98th fair with tradition

HENRY — The 98th annual Marshall-Putnam Fair with kick off on Wednesday, July 10, with the longest running grandstand event. Marshall-Putnam Fair harness racing dates all the way back to 1921 when the first fair was held. Keeping with this tradition, the 2019 “Jurassic-A-Fair” will also be offering harness racing beginning at 5 p.m. in front of the grandstand. Those interested may participate in “Pick-A-Winner.” If they pick the winning horse, they just might win a prize ranging from Fairbucks to a chicken dinner compliments of Kenyon’s Place. Individuals should get to the fairgrounds earlier so they can challenge their stacking skills by building the tallest tower of cookies. This fun contest begins at 4 p.m. in the Commercial Building. Cookie stacking is open to fair go-ers of all ages, children to adults. After testing their stacking skills, fair goers can stop by the Activity Building to enjoy the annual kickoff dinner, with serving from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner will be a choice of a ribeye or pork chop sandwich, served with homegrown Illinois sweet corn, green beans, applesauce and peaches. Top off the evening by visiting the wine tasting held in the Hunt Building beginning at 5:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the ever-popular decorated hat contest will get underway. Cody Calkins will be providing music for

this event from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 11, is T-Rex Thursday at the Marshall-Putnam Fair. The morning is dedicated to the senior members of communities as the Honorable Scott Shore and Judge Mike McCusky host the senior citizens’ program with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the program from 9 to 11 a.m. This program offers fun and entertainment, including music by the Torpedo Boys. Youngsters can have a roaring good time at Family Fun Night beginning at 4 p.m. Some of the many activities will include face painting, Balloon Artist Allan Adcock, carnival games, inflatables and train rides. There will also be raffle prizes and a 50/50. The Upper Limits rock climbing wall will be there from 1 to 8 p.m. All activities at Family Fun Night are free. New to the fair this year is the country concert. The Marshall-Putnam Fair is excited to offer the Dylan Schneider Concert with opener, Austin Burke. Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Hennepin Park District will host free Pickleball 101 workshops HENNEPIN — The Hennepin Park District will soon host free Pickleball 101 workshops that will cover the basics of the game, the rules, player safety, apparel, hydration and equipment needs. After an orientation, there will be time for playing the game. There will be two sessions, one for adults and one for children. There is a maximum number of 12 people per workshop. If demand is

high enough, more workshops will be scheduled. The adult workshop will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6. The children’s workshop will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 8. Paddles, balls and water will be provided. Court shoes must be worn; absolutely no flip-flops or sandals will be allowed. PC Library District awarded grant HENNEPIN — The Putnam County Public Library District has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Chicago Section, which will fund IEEE science kits for public libraries. These kits will provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education for children, and can be checked out across communities outside of the library. The science kits available will be “Sphero Sprk+,” which will allow children in all grades to explore sci-

ence, math, art and computer science skills using robotics and basic coding; as well as “Makey Makey,” an electronic remote control connected to a computer and alligator clips using everyday objects to allow children to learn science, music, math, art and computer science skills. The accessories for these kits include laptops, charging hubs, Sphero accessories and books. The first programs related to this exciting new chapter for Putnam County libraries will be starting in the fall.

Fourth of July celebrations have evolved in Illinois Past celebrations were more formal BY TOM EMERY Freelance writer Today in Illinois, the Fourth of July is a holiday for boating, barbecues and fireworks. In the state’s earliest days, the celebrations were more organized and formal — though the fireworks were a constant. The first Fourth of July celebrations after Illinois was granted statehood in 1818, as elsewhere, often were loosely scripted. First on everyone’s minds was reverence for the Revolution, which had taken place less than 50 years earlier. Samuel Wheeler is state historian of Illinois and director of research and collections at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. “Americans of the 1820s and 1830s were closer to the Revolution than we are to World War II,” Wheeler said.

“They understood how significant the Revolution was, and held the men and the leaders of that time in very high esteem.” A typical Fourth of July in the era began with the boom of a cannon or the crackling of gunfire, followed by a parade of the leaders of the town, including tradesmen, business owners and militia members, with musical accompaniment. Then the Declaration of Independence was normally read aloud before an array of patriotic speeches was delivered.

Festivities followed an agenda “Celebrations of the Fourth of July usually followed an agenda,” Wheeler said. “There was a kind of order on how things were to be done.” Afterward, the men of the town gathered at a local tavern or hotel for dinner, complete with 13 formal toasts — one for each of the original colonies. The number 13 was a recurring theme in many July Fourth celebrations nationwide, and some towns

featured the firing of 13 guns or cannons as part of the festivities. “Today, the number 13 is considered unlucky,” Wheeler said. “But in that era, everyone knew what 13 meant. That honored the colonies that had banded together and created this audacious new experiment in popular government.” The toasts, too, followed a script. One was for the heroes of the Revolution; another was for the sitting president; and a third was for George Washington. Even the number of cheers after each toast was planned ahead of time. The last of the 13 toasts usually was dedicated to women, who were rarely present at the dinner. “Women in the 19th century weren’t going to be a part of that,” Wheeler said. “Men and women lived in separate spheres in that era. But the women usually celebrated July Fourth in their own way.” In one instance in the early 1840s, about 400 women in Springfield held their own outdoor celebration to mark the day.

Stage 212 announces cast for their presentation of ‘Hello, Dolly!’

LASALLE — Stage 212 has announced the cast for their presentation of the classic, multiple Tony Award-winning “Hello, Dolly,” the enduring and endearing musical by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart. Dolly Levi is a widow, matchmaker, and also professional meddler, but everything changes when she decides the next match she needs to make is for herself. Set in New York City at the turn of the 20th century, “Hello, Dolly!” is boisterous and charming from start to finish, and features such memorable songs as “Before the Parade Passes By,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and, of course, “Hello, Dolly!”

The cast includes Kelly Johnson as Dolly Levi, Joel Stevenor as Horace Vandergelder, Becky Christopherson as Irene Molloy, Tony Christopherson as Cornelius Hackl, Mary Rose Prosinski as Minnie Fay, Damian Gonzalez as Barnaby Tucker, Sarah Hunter as Ermengarde, Kyle Showen as Ambrose Kemper, Naomi Ochuba as Ernestina, Deana Brown as Ms. Rose, Kevin Alleman as Rudolph, and Trenton McKinnie as the judge. Featured in the dancing ensemble are LeSavior Summers, Courtney Ries, Amilia Sanchez, Sydnee Wright, Nick Hancock, Trenton McKinnie, Tim Campbell and Aiden Schneider. Featured in the vocal ensemble are Macy Anderson, Naomi

Ochuba, Kevin Alleman, Vicky Bickel, Anthony Hewitt, Deana Brown, Isaac Alvarado, Jenifer Rexius and Zoe Piano. “Hello, Dolly!” will be presented July 19 through Aug. 4 at Stage 212, 700 First St., LaSalle. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. There will be matinee and evening performances on July 27 and Aug. 3. Tickets will be available to the general public for $20 each beginning July 8, and may be purchased by visiting the box office between 4 and 6 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. and noon Saturday, or by calling 815224-3025 during the same hours.
