Color Point sold to hemp grower Red White & Bloom to acquire 3.6-millionsquare-foot facility for hemp production GRANVILLE — MichiCann Medical Inc., operating as Red White & Bloom, has signed a letter of intent to acquire Color Point greenhouse northeast of Granville for what will be the world’s largest indoor premium hemp facility. In operation since 1978, the greenhouse, at 14240 Greenhouse Ave., has been granted its hemp grower license and hemp processor registration from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The site is expected to help provide hemp for the rapidly expanding cannabidiol (CBD) product market. CBD is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940, and it is one of approximately 113 identified cannabinoids present in cannabis plants. It accounts for up to 40 percent of the plant’s extract. In 2018, clinical research on cannabidiol included preliminary studies of its effects on anxiety, cognition, movement disorders and pain. “CBD is growing faster than can-

nabis in the U.S., and the hemp-CBD market alone could hit $22 billion by 2022. It’s been flying under the radar but is set to explode, having profound impacts on CPG (consumer packaged goods) and Pharma,” a Brightfield Group representative said. The Brightfield Group is a leading predictive analytics and market research firm for the legal CBD and cannabis industries. Anchored by the Illinois facility, Red White & Bloom intends to establish large-scale production capabilities focused on hemp extraction and product manufacturing within the United States. Management’s experience in creating the first standardized cannabis production facility in Canada will allow it to establish this state-of-theart Illinois facility as the bellwether for standardization of premium hemp CBD, and CBD-derived medicines and products. The family-owned, 3,612,866-square-

foot greenhouse includes 451,282 square feet of production and warehouse facilities on more than 231 acres of land. There are 175 full-time employees and more than 400 workers at peak season. The entire greenhouse is computerized and highly efficient with an operable roof system, and ebb and flood watering with 100 percent water recycling. “We continue with our plan to rapidly expand from our base in Michigan and invest in scaled operations across the United States as we bring together additional components of our multi-state operator strategy,” Red White & Bloom CEO Brad Rogers stated. “We have been making investments in IP, for mulations and brands as well as finalizing terms on a number of other transactions for our CPG rollout later in 2019,” Rogers stated. “We believe these efforts will allow us to expand our presence expeditiously and help position the company to be one of the largest national players in the rapidly expanding U.S. cannabis market,” he stated.

Board preparing for August street repairs

Rep. Yednock to help with funding of Elm Street project

said Yednock will be helping the village to secure $177,000 for the project through the state’s recently passed capital improvement budget. The funds are expected to cover engineering expenses and the work required to widen Elm Street from Route 71 to Hopkins Street, as well as the addition of curbs and a sidewalk.

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com GRANVILLE — With the major renovations of McCoy Street completed last year, the Granville Village Board took steps during its June 4 meeting to address the many other streets needing attention. “With McCoy Street completed, I think it’s good for our residents to see us working to fix some of our other streets,” board member Jim Pettit said. The necessary paperwork to be approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation had been presented to Village President Jared Baker by engineer Mike Richetta. The $107,000 project will be funded through the village’s Motor Fuel Tax Fund, and the work is expected to be done in August. Baker said IDOT’s approval of the work was expected to take between four to six weeks. The work will include $4,000 to spray-patch the winter-related cracks on McCoy Street, and $19,000 for four days of patching other various streets. There will also be $75,000 of various sealcoating work. Questions arose about some of the more deteriorated streets in the village that weren’t on

With Granville’s McCoy Street having been repaved last year, the Granville Village Board is preparing for addition street repair projects for the current construction season. the board’s list, such as Harrison Street. It was reported Harrison Street also has drainage issues that need to be corrected first and that the approved work was only the first phase of anticipated improvements. Pettit said there was still roughly $100,000 in the village’s Road Repair Fund that could be used for additional and more extensive repairs. Baker also reported he and Pettit had been speaking with state Rep. Lance Yednock about the village’s plans for Elm Street improvements. He

• The board approved additional compensation for Granville Police Chief Kevin Moore in recognition of the additional duties he’s taken on as the village’s acting superintendent of the Granville Public Works and Street Department. • The village will continue the inspection and surveying of local drains and sewers as it works to identify the most problematic areas. • Pettit said he has been investigating health insurance options for the village and that there may be benefit revisions for new employees in the future. • The necessary wiring has been completed for the new 12-foot fan scheduled to be installed at the wastewater treatment plant on June 20. The fan is expected to improve the drying time of the plant’s polymer waste mixture. • The board agreed to replace the 15-year-old baby swings in Hopkins Park after a recommendation from member Bob Fescenmeyer. The next Granville Village Board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 18.

‘More on 34’ coming up this weekend Yard sales, flea markets, garage sales all along Route 34 on Friday and Saturday, June 14-15 PRINCETON — Visitors can shop till they drop during the annual “More on 34” event, which will be held this year on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, Father’s Day weekend. Bargain hunters delight in this annual event, which features yard sales, flea markets, garage sales and special events all along Route 34 from Aurora to Galesburg. In Bureau County, sales are planned in Neponset, Sheffield, Wyanet, Princeton, Dover and LaMoille. Outside of Bureau County, drivers can expect to find sales and events in towns along Route 34 from Galesburg to Aurora. People are advised to watch for signs along the route indicating local sales. Some people start at one end of the route early on Friday and stay overnight at the motels in Princeton, as it is about halfway, before finishing the second half of the route on Saturday. Most sales open early and continue to at least 5 p.m. The Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton hosts a two-day garage sale on Friday and Saturday with lots of vendors and food stands inside and outside the exhibit halls. Doors will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. This is a good spot to stop for lunch and cold drinks, with clean

restrooms and plenty of seating inside. Admission and parking are free. Those who want to sell or have questions may visit the fair’s website at www.bureaucountyfair.com or call 815-303-2905 to reserve a selling space. Indoor and outdoor spaces are still available. The Princeton Farmers’ Market will be set up on South Main Street next to the Apollo Theater from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. Stop and take home some of the freshest veggies, cut flowers, fresh eggs and baked goods around. The Summer Solstice shopping event begins at 4 p.m. Friday, June 14, on Main Street in Princeton, featuring fine food, drinks, free trolley rides and shopping adventures

in the city’s two Main Street shopping districts — the Art District’s unique shops on the north end, and the many new shops on the south end. Many of the More on 34 shoppers return the following week to walk Main Street and visit and shop those stores. A free trolley ride will take people from one end of Main Street to the other on Saturday. Wyanet is holding townwide garage sales during the weekend, along with a cookout at the Wyanet Locker that will benefit the “Buddy Bags” program. The menu includes grilled pork chop or steak sandwiches. The LaMoille Lions Club will be having sales set up in their club

building, which is located at 308 Howard St. Call 815-488-2098 for information. Watch for signs around LaMoille for some new sale locations. In Sheffield, watch for flowers and plants for sale. There will be sales in yards, garages and parking lots along the route. Some sales open early on Thursday, and some will still be open on Sunday. PUTNAM — Rita L. Ely, 81, of Putnam passed away Saturday, June 8, 2019, at her residence. Rita was born on March 13, 1938, in Henry to Louis and Elizabeth (Noeder) Merdian. She married Charles Ely on Nov. 12, 1960. She graduated from Henry High School. She was a bus driver for Putnam County School District for 30 years. She also worked for the Clover Club and the Pizza Place in Granville. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed gardening, and visiting with family, neighbors and friends. Survivors include four sons, Steve (Laura) Ely of Dixon, Kevin (Debbie) Ely of Granville, Bill Ely of Putnam and David Ely of Putnam; one daughter, Charlene (Dave) Ryckaert of LaMoille; one brother, Jerry (Jane) Merdian of Henry; one sister, Pat (Wally) Schaidle of Metamora; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Ely, on Jan. 31, 1994; and two sons, Bob and Joe Ely. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Visitation was held Tuesday, June 11, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville. Pallbearers will be Josh Merdian, Alex Ely, Abbi Ely, Diana Ely, Rachel Ely, Emily Jo Ely, Chris Dixon, Dave Ryckaert, Connie Ely and Katie Ely. SEATONVILLE — Timothy Jay Engel, 65, of Seatonville died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. Born May 19, 1954, in Spring Valley to Donald and Ruth (Foss) Engel, he married Ellen Pottinger on April 1, 1979. She survives. He worked at FS in LaMoille as a mechanic and tender driver. He was a member of the Ladd Moose and the People Church in Princeton. Also surviving are one daughter, Alexis (Eric) Cwikla of Hennepin; two sons, Jedidiah (Courtney) Engel of Princeton and Jared Engel of Seatonville; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Judy (John) Nelson of Tempe, Ariz., Lois (Ed) Dixon of Johnston, Iowa, and Dianna (Joe) Wolfe of Edwards, Miss.; and one brother, Don (Patricia) Engel of Normal. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Jeff. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley with Pastor Zach Krause of the People Church of Princeton officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, starting at 10 a.m. Visitation was also held Tuesday, June 11, at funeral home.

GRANVILLE — Charles Joseph Ernat, 77, of Granville died Saturday, May 25, 2019, at his home. Born Feb. 20, 1942, in Bureau County to Carl and Leona (Terando) Ernat, he married Ruth Crawley on Nov. 11, 1994, in Putnam County. She survives. He attended Hopkins High School in Granville. He was a third-generation farmer, working the family farm in Granville until 2017. He had also been employed by Maze Nail, retiring after 30 plus years. He was an honorary member of the Spring Valley Boat Club and was also a member of the Peru Eagles. Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon (Curt) Podobinski of Hennepin and Shelly Schultz of Lafayette, Ind.; three stepchildren, Jethro Cain, Lisa Baumann and Nicholas Horak, all of Minnesota; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and his sister, Carol (Charles) Kittilson. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service was held Saturday, June 8, at the Barto Funeral Home in Spring Valley with the Rev. Gregory Jarzombek, O.S.B., officiating. A memorial visitation was held prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the family.

He’s also been Scouting since a young age, and he found a way to combine both with the project that helped earn him the title of Eagle Scout.

I thought it’d be a great way to help bring it to our school, so we could represent it in another popular IHSA (Illinois High School Association) sport,” he said. Chris Newsome, the assistant principal and athletic director at Putnam County High School, said the school currently doesn’t participate in the IHSA soccer series, so any team at the high school level would be considered club status.

Joe did an incredible job on his project, and PC is extremely grateful for the soccer goals he donated to the school,” he said. While requiring a lot of work, Twardowski said his project to raise the necessary money to purchase regulation soccer goals, nets, paint and field marking materials was also enjoyable. “I invited many of the PC soccer players to come out and help with the assembly of the goals and the marking of the field. Many people showed up to the goal assembly, and it was a blast. That was the easy part,” he said.

The next stage of the project was marking out a regulation high school field using a large measuring tape, string and a rolling field marker. There were fewer volunteers to help the day that work was completed, and Twardowski said the lack of extra hands made the work significantly more difficult. Completing the project took 164 hours and the help of numerous volunteers. He funded about twothirds of it with the $3,300 raised by selling meat sticks and candy bars. The remaining funds for two soccer nets, a paint machine, cones and flags came through private donations. Twardowski said he has met many great people through Scouting and that they’ve helped him become more outgoing by pushing his boundaries, little by little, until he now feels like he could do almost anything. “Scouting helps guide youth into becoming leaders. It helps teach you skills you’d never learn in school, such as tying a clove hitch, or pitching a tent,” he said. “They help show you don’t need the great indoors to have a good time. You can have an amazing time by the lake or making a fort on a camp-out,” he said. Twardowski also said Scouting

opens many doors and offers opportunities for travel and excitement. “There are amazing trips sponsored by Scouting programs that you’d never imagine even existed. You can go camping in front of a castle in Scotland, on canoe trips in Canadian lakes, two-week long backpacking trips in New Mexico, or learn new skills through merit badges at a college and go on a scavenger hunt around the campus,” he said. Boy Scouts age out of the organization at the age of 18, and Twardowski will remain a mem-

ber of Granville’s Troop 1093 until then. He’s not yet sure of what or where he’d like to study after he graduates from high school, but if it involves a local college, he said he’d be an assistant scoutmaster with his troop. “If I go further away, I’d like to be a part of the local troop. I’d also like to stay active in the Order of the Arrow, which is Scouting’s National Honor Society, and hopefully receive the highest rank of Vigil. Scouting is a great program, and I’d like to see more youth be a part of it,” he said.

GRANVILLE — David E. Shore of Granville graduated from Boston University School of Law with cum laude honors on May 19. He is a graduate of Putnam County High School (2001), University of Illinois College of ACES (Bachelor of Science, 2005) and Harvard Medical School Department of Molecular Biology, concentrating in genetics (Doctor of Philosophy, 2012). Pursuing a career in bio-law, Shore has been employed since receiving his Ph.D. as a specialist at two Boston law firms specializing in science-based patent and intellectual property law. Prior to entering law school, he also passed the U.S. Patent Bar, allowing him to represent his firm’s clients in contested patent proceedings. His employment since 2014 has been with the law firm of Choate, Hall and Stewart in Boston, where he will continue as a science specialist and patent agent while studying for the Massachusetts Bar, and once admitted to the bar, as an associate attorney specializing in science-based intellectual property litigation. Colton Washkowiak graduates from University of Illinois

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University’s largest-ever graduating class (5,248) received degrees during four spring commencement ceremonies May 9 and 11. Iowa State awarded 4,439 undergraduate degrees, 527 master’s degrees, 132 doctor of philosophy degrees and 150 veterinary medicine degrees. Area students receiving degrees were Jonathan Mattern of Magnolia, Bachelor of Science, Agricultural Engineering; and Wesley Oltman of Putnam, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, cum laude.

GRANVILLE — Colton Washkowiak of Granville recently graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications, with a minor in leadership studies from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. While studying at U of I, Washkowiak was inducted into the Alpha Alpha Zeta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Honor Society. He was also on the dean’s list for the spring semester of 2018. Washkowiak is a 2015 graduate of Putnam County High School.

HENRY — On Wednesday, May 15, Officers Robert Finn and Logan Willand from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Office of Law Enforcement visited members of the U of I Extension’s Marshall-Putnam 4-H Tech Wizards after-school program. The officers talked with the youths about the duties they perform, the science and technology they use to perform these duties, and what impact these duties have on the ecology and conservation of Illinois’ natural resources. The youth members were given an orientation of the equipment used, with a focus on the technological aspects, and were able to tour the officers’ specially outfitted trucks. They serve as both the officers’ transportation and their office on wheels. Afterward, the youth members got hands-on experience using thermal imaging devices to locate an officer hidden in a dark room, simulating one of the many uses for these devices. The Marshall-Putnam 4-H Tech Wizards is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) based, after-school mentoring

Bailey Herr nominated to attend leadership conference in Washington, D.C. MAGNOLIA — This summer, Magnolia’s Bailey Sue Herr could travel to the nation’s capital to participate with other junior high students in a leadership conference that will provide an academic and career oriented experience. The Junior National Young Leadership Conference is one of Envision’s programs enabling students

to explore interests and experiences outside of a classroom. Envision is a tuition-based educational company marketing developmental programs to families with students in elementary school through college. According to a 2009 New York Times story, the surveys show nearly every attendee to the conference is satisfied with the experience and that

many later recommend it to others. While in D.C., Herr would attend lectures and workshops, engage in role-playing political situations, go on sightseeing field trips and more. Herr was nominated for the conference by her sixth-grade Putnam County Junior High School Language Arts teacher, Amy Carboni. Herr was a member of both the basketball team and the Thundercats Wrestling Club this year. Herr will enter seventh grade this

fall, and enjoys outdoor activities, reading, writing, poems, drawing, and socializing with friends and family. In the future, she’d like to attend college and become an educator and mentor to community youths. Herr’s goal is to raise $3,500 to attend. It’s very exciting to get a head coaching job at the college level. I haven’t coached women’s basketball before, but it’s still just basketball. PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE Deer accidents At 1:33 p.m. on May 16, Larry R. Jamison, 78, of Beardstown struck a deer on Route 26 in Hennepin Township. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. At 9:23 p.m. on May 18, Rita J. Borri, 68, of McNabb struck a deer on Route 26 in Hennepin Township. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. At 8:55 p.m. on May 20, Jake G. Ruff, 31, of Peoria struck a deer on Route 18 in Magnolia Township. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. At 5:22 a.m. on May 22, John E. Rand, 68, of Streator struck a deer on Route 26

in Hennepin Township. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. At 11: 08 p.m. on June 4, Michael W. Taylor, 45, of Streator struck a deer on Route 71 in Granville Township. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. Single-vehicle crashes At 7:30 a.m. on May 17, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 26 in Magnolia Township. A vehicle driven by Kyler T. Hanson, 23, of Henry went off the road and struck a tree. Hanson stated he fell asleep while driving. He was issued traffic citations for failure to reduce speed

to avoid an accident and no insurance. He was transported to St. Margaret’s Hospital by Putnam County EMS. Henry Fire, Henry Police and the McNabb Fire Department assisted. At 8:28 p.m. on May 19, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on East Bottom Road in Granville Township. A vehicle driven by Gage G. Presthus, 18, of McNabb went off the road and struck a utility pole. Presthus and the passenger refused medical treatment, and no citations were issued. Warrant arrests At 6 p.m. on May 21, Donald E. Scott, 29, of Streator was picked up by the Put-

nam County Sheriff’s Office on a LaSalle County failure-to-appear warrant for DUI. Scott posted bond and was released. At 2:30 p.m. on May 29, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office arrested Douglas L. Sampo, 32, of Arlington on a failure-to-appear warrant out of Bureau County. Domestic battery At 8 p.m. on June 1, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged Corey B. Smythe, 43, of Putnam with domestic battery. Smythe is alleged to have struck a family member at their residence in Lake Thunderbird. He was taken to the Putnam County Jail.
