Students fare well after transferring Good grades being reported at NIU, ISU OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College graduates are faring well at Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University according to fall 2019 reports, board members learned March 12. At Illinois State, the average grade point average for 168 IVCC transfers was 3.23, surpassing the 3.07 average for all 3,900 community college transfers and the 3.03 average for roughly 11,400 native students. At Northern, the average GPA for 153 IVCC transfers was 3.19 compared to the 3.07 average for 6,600 community college transfers and the 2.90 average for more than 6,300 native students. “The reports show our students continue to excel academically after transferring,” said Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski. In a campus update opening the meeting, Grzybowski said IVCC’s student body is getting younger. “At the height of the enrollment bubble in fall 2010, the mean age was 25,” Grzybowski said. “In fall 2019 it was slightly less than 24.” Also noteworthy, Grzybowski said, is increased “financial stressors” on students. “Last fall, 72 percent of students filing the FAFSA were awarded Pell or MAP awards — both of which are primarily income-based,” he said.

In other business, the board approved:

• Inter mediate and advanced welding certificates in both GMAW (gas metal arc welding) and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding). • The $608,000 bid of John’s Service and Sales of Oglesby for the Building F (Weeg Cultural Centre) air handling unit and Building J (Auto Shop) exhaust upgrades. • The $267,750 bid for replacement of the gym bleachers by Carroll Seating Company of Elk Grove Village. The work will take place this summer. • A campus office for Central Illinois Police Mobile Training Unit (MTU). MTU will lease an office in the Peter Miller Community Technology Center and have access to a classroom for training. “This arrangement will provide a safer campus and allow for unique experiences for criminal justice students,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.

Lillian Rodrigues and Paxton Kennedy of Mendota are among more than 150 IVCC graduates now attending NIU. Rodrigues is carrying a 4.0 GPA and recently was accepted into the university’s nursing program. Kennedy is majoring in economics with a minor in business and carrying a 3.6 GPA. “IVCC’s curriculum prepared me well for NIU,” Rodrigues said. • A pledge to work collaboratively with all Illinois community colleges as part of an Illinois Community College Board initiative titled CAREER (Comprehensive Agreement Regarding the Expansion of Educational Resources).

Board members learned:

• IVCC’s student loan default rate for 2017 was 8.9 percent, the best it has been in three years and lower than the 2016 state average. “This is a credit to our financial aid staff, including director Eric Johnson and his predecessor Patty Williamson,” said Corcoran. • The Feb. 26 Edible Car Contest attracted LaSalle-Peru High School, St. Bede Academy, DePue High School, LaMoille High School, Putnam County and Trinity Catholic junior highs, and many IVCC students, faculty and staff. • The March 6 Career Expo at IVCC drew more than 1,000 students from three high schools and 13 grade schools. Among the 75 career sessions facilitated by 80 faculty, staff, students and outside presenters were law enforcement, manufacturing, banking, marketing, health care, social services and building and construction trades. • The annual employee recognition event is Friday, April 17, at Grand Bear Lodge. Social hour begins at 4 and presentation of awards at 5:30. • Contracts were renewed for the

2020-21 academic year with non-tenured faculty Jessie Bouxsein and Amber Robertson, nursing; Nicholas Fish, EMS; Amber Fox, accounting; David Garrison, mathematics; Stephen Gibson, industrial maintenance and electricity; Kevin Hermes, criminal justice; Kathryn Lillie, agriculture; Richard Marko, automotive; Nancy McDonnell, cybersecurity; Kaity Ritter, medical assistant; and Anthony Sondgeroth, welding. • Grace Norris has been hired as electronic resources librarian and Katharine Young as help desk specialist. • Diane Kreiser, a 30-year business office employee and currently the interim payroll and benefits coordinator, will retire Aug. 31. In her retirement letter, Kreiser wrote, “It has been a great experience working at IVCC. I will take with me many special memories and friendships. I have been a champion of IVCC since I was a student and will continue to be one.” • Another nearly three-decade employee, Katherine Sramek of the admissions office, will retire July 31. “I’ve never regretted for a minute choosing to work in education,” Sramek wrote. “Choosing to retire is both exciting and scary; nevertheless, it is time to spend more time with my grandchildren, in my flower gardens and travel.”

• Leslie Martinez, enrollment services assistant, and Ashlee Fitzpatrick, administrative assistant in Continuing Education and Business Services, have resigned. • IVCC has entered into a six-month digital marketing campaign with Studstill Digital Solutions of Peru. The campaign will focus on prospects 18-24 years of age, students enrolled in dual-credit and dual-enrollment courses and high school students who have taken the SAT or PSAT exams. • Corcoran received a thank-you letter from L-P Principal-elect Ingrid Cushing for his Feb. 27 speech to the school’s 300 High Scholarship Legion winners. “Preparing and delivering an inspirational speech is a difficult and time-consuming task,” Cushing wrote. “The excellent attention of the audience and the many favorable comments we received indicate your efforts were most successful.”

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College is taking precautions to guard against coronavirus transmission, and most instructors are prepared to offer instruction online if necessary, President Jerry Corcoran informed board members March 12. “So much of what we hear and read regarding the coronavirus is alarming and new ground for many of us, not just at IVCC, but across the Illinois Community College system,” he said. “We will continue monitoring the situation closely and will do everything we can to lessen the likelihood of it affecting programs and services, or having the virus spread

throughout the district.” “Our facilities staff is on top of the situation and quietly engaged in deep-cleaning,” Corcoran said. “And Academic Affairs has a strategy in place to supplement the college’s emergency response plan.” The plan provides a framework or “shell” faculty can use to move courses online. “Fortunately, the majority of faculty use Blackboard as a platform to deliver instruction — there is a Blackboard shell for all courses,” he said. “We are reaching out to faculty to update those shells and providing basic training to those new to Blackboard.”

Craftsman follows grandfather’s lead Brandon Mennie acquires small job shop, Taylor Made Machining in Mark BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media MARK — Brandon Mennie is following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Hubert “H.J.” Mennie, as a craftsman and will run his own small, personalized machine shop. Brandon, 27, a man of many talents, has been working in his family’s larger, factory-like Mennie Machine Co. in Mark for more than a decade. And this winter, he completed the purchase of Taylor Made Machining Inc., also in his hometown of Mark. “I wanted to venture off and do my own thing,” Brandon said. “Mennie’s is thousands to millions of parts. What we do is smaller quantity. A job shop. “It’s a dying art.” In recent weeks, he completed his purchase of Taylor Made from former founder Frank Niewinski and Bill Skowronski. Brandon said he has the blessing of his father, Bill, who is Mennie Machine Co. president. His business and the larger Mennie’s business are complementary, and serve different markets.

Every job’s a little different,” he said. “Instead of making one, five and 10 parts, they started making 1,000, 5,000, 10,000.” While a majority of the equipment in Taylor Made Machine has automated or programmable controls,

Taylor Made craftsmen and equipment have manual abilities to create and fabricate whatever might be needed, whether it’s fixing a broken part from an old tractor or doing the tool-and-die work to be able to complete a job. “What we do here is what H.J. started doing in the 1970s,” Brandon said. Niewinski said he and everyone else who has been at the shop for many years are staying on to help the company and Brandon. Niewinski started Taylor Made Machining Inc. in August 1993 in his father’s garage. He had worked for H.J. Mennie at Mennie Machine Co. starting in high school, and when the economy became a bit slow, he had pursued another line of employment. Niewinski had been working at Motor Wheel in Mendota and then returned to Mennie’s, and some customers urged him to “go out on my own” for smaller jobs. “We were just doing general machining. It was all custom machining. We made little jigs, die tooling, fixturing blocks,” Niewinski said. “We’re a niche operation. We do a lot of emergency work and repairs, and we build a lot of new tooling for local manufacturing (plants),” Niewinski said. Why did Niewinski want to sell, but also keep working and mentoring for a while? “Basically, getting a little bit older

and wanting the business to continue on in the direction it’s been going for the last 27 years,” he said. “I’m working with (Brandon Mennie) in the transition for as long as we can.” The 12 full-time employees are staying on, and that includes Niewinski, in estimating and purchasing. “The key is, as far as our customers are concerned, nothing is changing. Everybody’s still here. They’re doing the same jobs they’ve had,” Niewinski said. Brandon said he bought the business because of his experience, his desire to help customers, and his love for the tool room. “What I’m learning about this business is keeping the jobs going and keeping the customers satisfied,” he said. Sometimes that means making a house call to a manufacturer or customer. “This morning I was just at a factory in Mendota,” he said. He drove there to see what the customer needed. He brought back some of the items to work on, and the manufacturer will deliver some items to the shop. In addition to enjoying his craft and business, for which he studied at Illinois Valley Community College and Bradley University (bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering technology), he has several hobbies, ranging from flying airplanes to playing competitive hockey. He and his wife, Katie, live in Mark.

HENRY — Howard P. McQuilkin, 88, of Henry (formerly of Magnolia) passed away on Friday, March 6, 2020 at Heartland Health Care Center, Henry. The family is honoring Howard’s wishes to be cremated. Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements. Howard was born August 19, 1931, in Methodist Hospital, Peoria. His parents were Howard P. McQuilkin “Mac” and Mil (Root) McQuilkin. After graduating from John Swaney High School, he served in the United States Army in Germany as an ambulance driver. Other work he did included a cook in a restaurant, a brakeman on a train, an Ag Bag salesman, a lay minister, but mostly he was a farmer. Surviving him are a sister, Carol (Bob) Kirk and a brother, Jim (Bonnie) McQuilkin; five sons, Lee McQuilkin, Jon (Kami) McQuilkin, Scot (Lori) McQuilkin, Kevin (Tami) McQuilkin and Dale McQuilkin; nine grandchildren, Cory, Caylee, Collin, Nina, Raysha, Tanner, Molly, Amanda and Michael; seven great-grandchildren, Jack, Jake, Jaxon, Azalea, Hunter, Grantley and Adam. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steven and ex-wife, Myrle. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to donor’s choice. CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Sunday ordered all bars and restaurants in the state to close for two weeks to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Pritzker ordered that the shutdown run from the close of business Monday through March 30. The action came after crowds filled restaurants and bars around the state Saturday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Sunday there were 93 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state. Pritzker said he tried earlier this week to appeal to everyone’s good judgment to stay home, to avoid bars, and not to congregate in crowds. He added that it’s unfortunate many people didn’t take that seriously.

Hospitals offer info, advice on coronavirus BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media Lisa Clinton, director of Infection Control at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, says people don’t need to be concerned unless they have “known exposure to someone with a laboratory confirmed” case of the coronavirus. “Those people are generally isolated by the health department or keep themselves indoors,” she said, which limits their exposure to others. Coronavirus is spread through close, personal contact, so prevention is the best defense, Clinton said. “Wash your hands, stay out of crowds if you have a known condition or are more likely to succumb to any virus,” she recommends. Clinton said if anyone has concerns, the first step is to call their general practitioner before heading to the emergency room or urgent care. She says your doctor will know

your medical history and will be able to screen you over the phone to determine if you need further testing or if you just need to stay home and take care of yourself. And if you head to the ER hoping to get a test anyway, Clinton says, not so fast. Right now, there is a restricted amount of tests available, and they’ll be given to those who have been exposed to a (lab-confirmed) case of the virus and are symptomatic, or have been hospitalized with no other apparent reason per CDC and IDPH protocol. “They’re getting more (testing) supplies, but the demand is also rising,” Clinton said. There are no confir med cases in this area, Clinton said, and though she knows there is fear in the general public, she urges people not to rely on social media or what they hear regarding spread of the virus. All area health care providers are urging the public to call the IDPH hotline for general information and resources.

“There are a lot of people who have misinfor mation,” Clinton said. “They believe they should be tested just because they’re sick, but that isn’t the case. The symptoms are similar but not the same.” Cathy Foes, speaking for Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton,

Volunteer informational meeting planned for April 14 Trained volunteers assist agency with important services PRINCETON — Interested community members are invited to attend an informational meeting about volunteer opportunities from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the Princeton campus of Freedom House. Light refreshments will be served. For people interested in becoming a Freedom House volunteer, note that the next training class will be May 26 to June 4. Classes are conducted at the Prince t on facility on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for two weeks from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Participants must commit to attending every class. The course will comprise of 33.5 hours in the classroom and 30 hours

of online independent study, which must be completed before the first classroom day. There is no cost to attend, and Freedom House will supply the training materials. Freedom House is a non-profit organization that serves survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence. Those completing the course can serve as medical on-call advocates, answer the crisis hotline, and work with group or individual adult and child clients. Freedom House provides services to adults and children in Bureau, Henry, Marshall, Putnam and Stark counties. In the past year, Freedom House served more than 900 victims of domestic and sexual violence — women, men, teens and children. Putnam County Education Foundation announces Agri-Business 2020-21 scholarship applications now available Night postponed GRANVILLE — Each year, the Putnam County Educational Foundation (PCEF) administers eight scholarships available to graduates of Putnam County High School. For the current 2019-20 school year, the PCEF awarded more than $40,000 worth of scholarships. Applications for these scholarships are available from the office of the PCHS guidance counselor or via the PCHS website and are due in the office of the PC Schools superintendent by Wednesday, April 1. Created by the legacy of Durley Boyle, this scholarship is available to students planning to attend the University of Illinois, Illinois Wesleyan University, Bradley University or Illinois Valley Community College. Awards of up to $1,000 are available to attend IVCC and up to $2,000 to attend the four-year universities. The principle selection criteria is based on the all-around academic and extracurricular and community service achievement records of the applicants. Additional consideration may be given to financial need, leadership and other sources of scholarship assistance available to the applicant.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist in the furthering of the educations of PCHS graduates who exhibit special strengths in the areas of academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and community involvement. Eligible students may be attending or accepted to attend four-year universities, community colleges or other comparable institutions of higher learning. A minimum of four $500 scholarships will be awarded each year.

Hazel Marie Boyle Memorial Scholarship

Created by the legacy of Hazel Marie Boyle, this scholarship is available to students planning to attend the University of Illinois, Illinois Wesleyan University and Illinois Valley Community College. Awards of up to $1,000 are available to attend IVCC and up to $2,000 to attend Illinois and Wesleyan. The principle selection criteria is based on the all-around academic and extracurricular and community service achievement records of the applicants. Additional consideration may be given to financial need, leadership and other sources of scholarship assistance available to the applicant.

Ann Cioni Memorial Teachers Scholarship Fund

Created by the legacy of longtime teacher Anne Cioni, this scholarship is available to PCHS graduates planning to enter teaching careers. Eligible applicants planning to enter community colleges and universities with a stated intent to teach are eligible to compete for a single scholarship award of $2,000. The principle criteria focuses on the applicant’s all-around academic and extra-curricular service records. Additional consideration may be given to the applicant’s financial need, leadership roles and other sources of scholarship assistance. Special consideration will be given to applicants already enrolled in college level education or teaching programs.

The purpose of this scholarship is to further the educations of PCHS graduates pursuing a liberal arts and sciences degree. Applicants with either a major or minor in foreign language will be given special consideration. Eligible applicants may be attending or accepted to attend four-year universities, community colleges or other comparable institutions of higher learning. An annual scholarship of $1,000 will awarded.

Hubert J. “H.J.” Mennie Memorial Scholarship Made possible by the generosity of the Mennie family and the Mennie Machine Company, this scholarship has the purpose of furthering the educations of PCHS graduates pursuing an industrial technology career by attending Illinois Valley Community College or a comparable two-year institution of higher learning. An annual scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded.

Putnam County Science and Engineering Scholarship Made possible by the generosity of a PCHS alumnus, this scholarship is available to students attending or planning to attend Illinois Valley Community College, the University of Illinois or Bradley University and studying mathematics, science or engineering. Recipients will receive awards of up to $1,000 to attend IVCC and $4,000 to attend Illinois or Bradley. Selection criteria is based on the applicant’s academic and extracurricular/community service achievements, especially as they relate to mathematics, science and engineering.

Eloise Howland Memorial Scholarship Thanks to the legacy of Eloise Howland, this scholarship is available to students attending college whose homes are in Hennepin Township. The amount of the award is based on the annual investment income received from the scholarship fund, usually in the range of several hundred dollars. This annual scholarship will be awarded to the applicant with the highest grade point average.

Oglesby Elks announce Boyd and Dittmer as February Teens of the Month OGLESBY — The Oglesby Elks announced their February Teens of the Month were Molly Boyd and Michael Dittmar. Boyd, a senior at Putnam County High School, is the daughter of Helen Lenkailis and Michael Boyd. She is currently fifth in her class. She has been on the high honor roll all four years and in the National Honor Society since her sophomore year. She is currently the secretary for the National Honor Society as a senior. Boyd has been in volleyball and basketball all four years. She has been all-conference academics for both sports since her freshman year. She was also a co-captain in basketball her senior year. She was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for track her junior year. She also played volleyball her freshman year. She was in band, Concert Band and Pep Band all four years. She participated in musicals her sophomore and senior years. Boyd was the secretary for her class her freshman, sophomore and senior years, and was the class treasurer her junior year. She has been in FFA since her freshman year. As a sophomore, she was a parliamentarian for FFA. She has been the vice president since her junior year for FFA. She has been in Interact all four years, where she was the vice president her junior year and president her senior year. She was in P.A.C.C. her senior year. She has been in 4-H all four years.

She was secretary her freshman and sophomore years, vice president her junior year and president her senior year. She was the 4-H Federation treasurer her senior year. She was also the Putnam County 4-H Ambassador her junior and senior years. Boyd volunteered for 20 Miles an Hour her sophomore and junior years. She helped with the youth basketball camp her freshman through junior years. Since her freshman year, she has volunteered at the Trick or Treat canned food drive. She has helped with bingo at Spring Valley Nursing Home since her freshman year. Since her freshman year, she has been helping with blood drives. She has also been helping with junior track meets since her freshman year. Boyd enjoys her free time but enjoys working on her 4-H projects as well. She likes attending the FFA conferences and conventions, and the new people she meets. Dittmar, a senior at St. Bede Academy, is the son of Mida and Richard Dittmar. He has been on the honor roll all four years. He was in basketball his freshman through junior years. He was all-conference academic for basketball his junior year. He was in cross country and track his senior year. He was all-conference academic and co-captain his senior year for cross country. As a senior, he placed 18th at the Rockridge Three Rivers Conference meet in cross country. He also placed 16th

at the Senica regionals and qualified for the Oregon sectionals in cross country his senior year. He was also awarded as the Most Improved in cross country his senior year. As a freshman, Dittmer was in Interact Club. He was in the Heritage Club his senior year. As a senior, he became a member of Lectio Divina. He also became a Eucharistic minister for St. Bede Masses his senior year. He has been an altar server for the St. Bede Abbey for the past year. He helps serve Mass at the Abbey Church the first Sunday of every month. He is also an altar server at St. Valentine’s Church and has been since the fifth grade. He has also helped with the St. Bede basketball camp his freshman through junior years. His freshman year he helped

with Peru Catholic’s intramurals. This past year, he also helped at the Jim Latin 5K race held at St. Bede. Dittmer currently works part-time at City Center Physical Therapy in Peru. He enjoys spending time with family and friends. He enjoys exercising and especially running and jogging more because of cross country. He enjoys serving at church on the weekends. He also loves to listen to all kinds of music. Dittmer plans to attend Illinois Valley Community College or a fouryear college after high school. He plans to get involved in some clubs while at college. He is interested in the medical field. He is interested in being a physical therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist assistant and/or athletic trainer.

Seventh-grade volleyball season wraps up Seventh-grade volleyball season has come to an end with their final loss in the semi-finals of the regionals to the Henry Cardinals. The Lady Pumas had defeated Wallace 25-17, 25-16 to advance. When Madison Solomon was asked about the season, the coach responded: “I think the season went really well overall, even though our record did not reflect our growth and improvement. All the girls improved immensely throughout the season as a group and as individuals. We had some pretty rough patches and in the end, we did not come out on top, but the season was a success with their growth and improvement. “The season was extremely enjoyable with this great group of young ladies and was eye-opening for myself as well as the girls. I was sad to see the season end but look forward to working with the girls next year as they move up to the eighthgrade squad.”
