Red-faced: Masks are causing rosacea, aggravating teen acne Peru dermatologist says skin issues have tripled since mask mandates TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com The mask mandate was only in place a few weeks when Michelle Roth started seeing an explosion in red faces and acne. Roth is a physician assistant at Soderstrom Skin Institute, and she said the growing volume of skin disorders is both directly and indirectly linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The direct cause is masks: Covering our faces hasn’t done our skin any favors. Indirectly, the stress of the pandemic is aggravating skin troubles. Roth herself has battled rosacea, a condition that causes redness and makes the blood vessels visible in the face. Older generations would disapprovingly mutter the words “gin blossoms,” but rosacea is tied to other risk factors apart from alcohol. “It’s frustrating,” Roth said. “I’ve even experienced it personally on my chin and jaw line. It’s hard to escape it, even if you’re using the best masks or the best routines. You still can potentially flare up.” Dermatologists are by no means anti-mask — they want to avert COVID-19 as much as anyone — but those interviewed acknowledged that continual mask usage has set off an explosion of rosacea in adults while aggravating acne in teenagers. “I would say it’s tripled, for sure,” Douglas Leone of the Dermatology and MOHS Surgery Institute said. “I’ve had adults who haven’t had acne for years now suddenly having breakouts.” Leone observed that infection controls weren’t in place long before he started seeing an influx of patients complaining of inflamed skin and pimples that didn’t respond to overthe-counter products. “I think the rosacea and the irritation showed up fairly quickly, like in the first month or so,” he said. “Acne is always a bit delayed, probably three months later, but there’s definitely been an increase in prevalence.” Tight-fitting masks reduce coronavirus transmission, but they also cause irritation and prevent the skin from breathing, so to speak. Roth said she sees student-athletes playing sports in masks – which,

Mask usage has caused a surge in rosacea and acne. again, is prudent – but nonetheless can aggravate acne. “Masks need to be well-fitting,” Roth said, “but the heat and moisture they create tends to exacerbate rosacea and acne.” Roth said facial coverings may be the prime suspect, but there are other risk factors in play during the pandemic. Extreme cold and heat can cause rosacea flare-ups and so can alcohol, which has been a popular stress-buster during the pandemic. Stress is a proven menace to the skin, and the pandemic has produced no shortage of stress. Acne and rosacea can be prevented using mild cleansers and moisturizers, provided users steer clear

of scented varieties, as fragrances can irritate the skin. Sunscreen is strongly recommended, as direct sunlight is linked to acne and rosacea. Men are advised to shave with a good lather, working the blade in a single direction. Leone also advised men to steer clear of after-shaves, as they can dry out the skin and aggravate conditions such as rosacea. Indeed, dryness is such a problem during the winter months that Leone strongly recommends using a humidifier in the bedroom, giving the skin some much-needed moisture overnight.

Products containing benzoyl peroxide are helpful, but Leone recommended low-strength products with benzoyl concentrations of 2.5% to 5%. “Anything higher than that and it’ll dry out the skin,” he said. Women generally are more at risk of rosacea, particularly those who are fair-skinned, older than 30, who smoke or have a family history of rosacea. Both conditions can be stubborn, and prescription treatments may be the best — and in some cases, the

However, Joseph “Barry” Jackson, an optometrist with Bard Optical in Peru, said ocular rosacea is known to precede acne rosacea. “Those patients with ocular rosacea should be on the lookout for this because they have a higher incidence of acne rosacea,” Jackson said.

Now that the contract is signed and the Pistol Shrimp will call Veteran’s Park in Peru home for the 2021 season, there is an item that needs to be solved for the ballclub: housing. Traditionally, teams in the Prospect League will try to fill their roster with about 16 players that play at Division I or II programs but come from the surrounding areas. This is done to give hometown kids the opportunity to play in front of friends and family, but also to create opportunities to house the players whose families don’t live nearby. “It makes a lot of sense from every way you look at it to have as many local guys that can play at the level we need them to play,” said Pistol Shrimp Owner John Jakiemiec. With the short turnaround from signing to the beginning of the season and outside factors, such as the ongoing pandemic, Pistol Shrimp officials will be searching for host families for the players to stay throughout the summer. To help provide for the need for

player and employee housing the Pistol Shrimps may look into renting a few houses in the area to serve as places for players and coaches to stay. Also to help make it work, some players that are pitchers only and live in the Chicago area may be asked not to travel with the team for away games on days when they are not scheduled to pitch. For the rest of the players, host families will be needed for the upcoming season. The host families must be able to provide the player a private bedroom, use of laundry facilities, provide food (within reason) and communicate well with the player they are hosting. Players will operate on a different schedule than most normal households with their baseball schedule from practices, games and long road trips that may result in them arriving home in the middle of the night. The team will do its best to place players with families that may have similar food allergies, religions and transportation needs to help ensure the relationship is beneficial to all involved. “We let the players know that you’re cleaning your room, if your host family’s rules are to do your own dishes; you are doing your own dishes,” Jakiemiec said. “They are not there to do your laundry; you are doing your laundry. The players know the rules going in.”

Pistol Shrimp Pitcher Jake Dahl is the lone player for the 2021 season from the area. In a normal year the team would add more home-grown players to help with the housing of their teammates. Jakiemiec said they ask their families to allow the players to sleep to help recover from the long hours of playing and travel as well as to feed them what they are able. The team will try and place multiple players in the same household whenever possible. This helps with the player’s transportation as well as gives them someone in the household that is going through the same thing as them. Jakiemiec said their host families are primarily empty-nesters or retired people that enjoy baseball.

“In an ideal world, host families enjoy the experience and want to be host families again,” Jakiemiec said. “Then you get to the point where you have a lot of people that really want to be host families because they will follow that player, it’s just building that connection.” With opening day for the Pistol Shrimp just around the corner the search for host families has begun. Medows was born and raised on his family’s cowcalf operation outside of Cuba, Mo. He grew up playing football and baseball and was involved in his local 4-H. In 2002, Jason Medows, Medows left the host of Ag State of farm for St. Louis Mind podcast College of Pharmacy. He graduated in 2008 with his Doctor in Pharmacy and returned home to work at a local hospital and continue the cow-calf operation he started in college. It was at that local hospital he met his future wife, Keri. Fast forward 12 years and they have four boys and have purchased another farm of their own. In 2019, Medows began his podcast, Ag State Of Mind, where he combined his medical background with his passion for agriculture to help break the stigma surrounding mental health in agriculture. The conference will wrap up with

Farm women, and all those involved in the agriculture industry, should plan to attend the Women in Agriculture Conference on Friday, March 26. This year’s mini-conference is being held exclusively online to help women become empowered in agriculture. The conference, in its ninth year, will feature keynote speaker Jason Medows, host of the popular Ag State of Mind podcast. He will present “Mental Health: What it is, how it affects us in agriculture and what we can do to improve.” Using real-life examples from his own experience, Medows will discuss the mental health challenges faced in agriculture. He’ll focus on strategies and solutions for improving mental health and will conclude by speaking directly to women about how they can positively influence the men in their lives.

Rita Frazer, director of Network and Audio Services for the RFD Radio Network, and Adam Nielsen, director of National Legislation and Policy Development in the Governmental Affairs and Commodities Division of the Illinois Farm Bureau, presenting “Advancing Farm Bureau’s Issues in the 117th Congress.” Together they will discuss how to effectively communicate agriculture’s message with a new administration. Frazer and her team gather farm news and information and cover issues that are important to the Illinois Farm Bureau. RFD reports and programs are heard first on the air of affiliated stations and most programs can be found later in the day on the web or as podcasts. Frazer is a 30-year member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting and immediate past president of the NAFB. She is an award-winning broadcaster who has covered farm news and events on a state and national basis. Frazer uses her farm roots and years of broadcasting experience to communicate effectively with listeners

and has devoted her career to serving agriculture. Nielsen plans and executes the organization’s national legislative programs, acts as a liaison with the Illinois Congressional delegation and federal agencies and organizes the association’s fly-ins to Washington, D.C. He is also responsible for the implementation of IFB’s policy development program, coordinates the Illinois Agricultural Legislative Roundtable, a group of all agriculture associations and organizations within Illinois and serves as assistant secretary of ACTIVATOR, IFB’s political involvement committee. Nielsen joined Illinois Farm Bureau in 2000 and served three terms as a member of the Normal (IL) Town Council. There is no cost to attend and registration is now open. Alternatives has now expanded the Vaccine Support Center to seven additional counties in Alternatives’ service region — Bureau, Putnam, Henry, Knox, Warren, Henderson and Mercer. The expansion comes after the successful first two weeks of the service in Rock Island County. The center serves older adults (65 and older) who do not have the ability to register online for vaccinations. Win Stoller delivers Valentine’s Day cards to Heartland Health Care Center in Henry HENRY — On the Friday before Valentine’s Day, Heartland Health Care Center in Henry welcomed a special delivery of cards from a Valentine’s Day card drive that State Sen. Win Stoller, R- Germantown Hills, organized with area schools and student organizations. Stoller said he was pleased with the overwhelming response he received with his request and was happy to personally be delivering them to local area nursing homes. Stoller praised frontline workers for their commitment to caring for patients and elderly residents in what clearly has been an unprecedented situation. Stoller commended staff from skilled nursing facilities like Heartland as he knows everyone works tirelessly to provide the best possible care. His goal was to lift spirits, reminding the residents, patients and staff that they are remembered as the pandemic continues to impact our daily lives.

BRIEFS IVCC names 5 student winners of Martin Luther King writing contest OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee announced that five students have been selected as winners in the 2021 Honoring His Legacy: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Writing Contest. The annual contest invites all IVCC students to submit written entries in any format that address diversity, equity and inclusion. Entries are evaluated on insight into diversity, equity and inclusion and technical skill. Although the contest awards three places, a three-way tie for third place this year has resulted in five winning entries. DEI co-chairwoman Amanda Cook Fesperman noted that the quality and diversity of entries this year was impressive and was not surprised that more than three winners were selected. “With everything that is going on in America with regards to DEI right now, it is not surprising that these issues are in the hearts and minds of our students,” Cook Fesperman said. “I couldn’t be more pleased to see how our students

are critically thinking about these important issues.” Grace McCormick of Peru won first place for a personal narrative, “Take A Step Back: The Role of the White Ally.” McCormick will donate her prize money to Young, Black, and Lit, a nonprofit committed to increasing access to children’s books that center, reflect and affirm Black children. End the season with a win. After learning on the bus Wednesday’s game (March 3) against Putnam County would be their last of the season — the scheduled finale at Woodland on Friday becoming a pandemic casualty earlier in the day — the Crusaders decided to go out with a bang. Lucas Hoffman drilled in a season-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Vic Mullen accounted for seven of his 15 points and three of his seven rebounds in a decisive run at the start of the fourth quarter, giving Marquette a scrappy 65-55 victory over Punam in RM Germano Gymnasium. Nick Melvin also posted 15 points

and seven rebounds for the Crusaders, who finish their shortened season 11-4. Putnam County, which dropped to 8-6 on the season with the loss, used 16 points from Andrew Pyszka, 11 points and six rebounds from Jackson McDonald and 10 points from Stephen Mecagni to overcome a cold-shooting start and stay within three points heading into the final period. However, Marquette scored the first 10 points of that quarter and, behind Hoffman and Mullen, 16 of the first 21 over the first five minutes to take control. “Hoffman was just awesome tonight,” Marquette coach Todd Hopkins said. “He’s had a heck of a year for us and is a darn good player. Tonight he showed it. He scored 27 and had a very tough [defensive] matchup against a really good player in McDonald, giving up three inches and being posted up a lot, and he held him to 11. … “It was a good effort all the way around. Peru doctor creates healthcare scholarships at IVCC

10, $1,000 scholarships will support students toward healthcare careers Dr. Kamal Kishore, owner of Illinois Retina & Eye Associates of Peru, Peoria and Galesburg, has established annual healthcare and pre-med scholarships with the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation. The 10, $1,000 Kamal Kishore MD Scholarships will support students in a variety of healthcare careers including pre-med. Beginning this fall, the awards will cover tuition, books and related-expenses. Dr. Kishore has served the Illinois Valley for 18 years. In 2011, he built a new office building at 3602 Marquette Road, Peru. A board certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist, Dr. Kishore specializes in diseases and surgeries of the retina including age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Kishore entered medical school in New Delhi, India, and completed six years of training in ophthalmology before moving to the U.S. in 1992.

He trained in internal medicine for two years in Nassau, N.Y., prior to his residency in ophthalmology in Newark, N.J. He completed his fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Louisiana State University in 1999, while training with one of the best surgeons in the world. Today, Dr. Kishore is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria where he works with medical students seeking a career in ophthalmology. He has earned numerous awards including the American Society of Retina Specialists Senior Honor Award and a trophy from ASRS for a surgical video, authored eight book chapters, published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals and given over 100 presentations at national and international meetings. “Dr. Kishore is giving back by investing in future doctors and medical professionals,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “Each year, 10 students will benefit from his benevolence.”

But Hoffman’s 3 and another basket put the Crudaders in the lead for good and started a 15-2 run that was capped by a Melvin drive at 3:46 of the second with Marquette up, 25-15. The Panthers mini-burst at the end of the half kept it 28-26 at the break and another at the end of the third, keyed by buckets from McDonald and Mecagni, cut it to 45-42 with eight minutes left. But a Melvin jumper, a 3-point play and a power move by Mullen and a 3 from Logan Nelson in the first 2:26 quickly upped that margin to 55-42 “We knew about Melvin and the big kid, so a big night like Hoffman had was a bonus for them,” said Panthers coach Harold Fay, whose team will visit Midland at 7 p.m. Friday. “We didn’t let them get run-outs this time. ... We made them go into sets and, unfortunately, they’re just a little bigger and stronger than we are. “We had good balanced scoring. We just couldn’t get stops when we needed them because we haven’t been sliding over that extra step to help [on defense], to seal off a path and make them kick it somewhere else. We let them finish too much, at the free-throw line or at the rim. “We just didn’t finish the rebound at times, and that’s usually when bad things happen. … This wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but it was a step in the right direction.”
