Putnam County Community Center is offering Medicare enrollment assistance Jan. 1 to March 31 is the general enrollment period for Medicare Part A and/or Part B. You can sign-up if both of these apply: You didn’t sign-up when you were first eligible and you aren’t eligible for a special enrollment period. You must pay premiums for Part A and/or Part B and your coverage will begin July 1. You may have to pay a higher premium for late enrollment in Part A and/or a higher premium

for late enrollment in Part B. Medicare savings programs can provide assistance with paying for Medicare premiums if you meet certain conditions. SRCCF announces 10 2021 scholarships available The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation announced that 10 scholarships are available to students for the 2021 season. The scholarships will be awarded from local donors. These scholarships also will be offered to home-schooled students. SRCCF will award five $1,000 scholarships through the Carol and Dick Janko Scholarship Fund for Young Entrepreneurs. The scholarship reflects a lifelong commitment to youth, education, economic development and philanthropy. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited university or college for the 2021 school year and must be able to demonstrate recent studies or work-related activities focused on entrepreneurship with the intent to become an entrepreneur. SRCCF also will award two $1,500 scholarships through the Internet of Things Scholarship for Science, Engineering and Technology by B+B SmartWorx in Ottawa.

The scholarships will be offered to one male student and one female student who have studied IoT and who will pursue a career in engineering, science and/or technology. The Rising Star Scholarship is available to students residing in Seneca or Marseilles who will be pursuing a degree in elementary education at Illinois State University. This scholarship provides a $5,000 award and was established through SRCCF by Ethel McConnell, a lifelong educator and learner who taught at Jefferson Elementary School in Ottawa and Marseilles Elementary School. McConnell created a $10,000 Mac-Aero Scholarship in memory of her late husband, Ed, who was an engineer and an aviation mechanic. He also owned Mac-Aero on Boondox Field in Seneca. The Mac-Aero Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior pursuing a degree in Aeronautics or Aviation.

This year, SRCCF announced its newest scholarship: the $1,000 Pie It Forward Scholarship for Inclusion. This scholarship was established by the Tangled Roots Beverage Company in Ottawa. The applicant must be a resident of La Salle, Bureau or Putnam counties and must be enrolled in an accredited, degree-granting college or university for the 2021 school year. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and can demonstrate through their background, studies or related activities a focus on how they can positively effect change in the world toward the goal of ending inequity. Winners of all SRCCF Scholarships are selected by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee. The application deadline is Feb. 26, and the Scholarship Committee will determine and award the scholarships by March 26.

Smith retires from Consolidated Grain and Barge Company and makes unique donation GRANVILLE — Tom Smith of Granville retired last month from Consolidated Grain and Barge Company in Hennepin after working 40 years for the company. On his last day, his fellow employees gave him a collection of pennies that was kept in the office and used for community change when people purchased items from the vending machine. Smith, who worked the scales at CGB, would exchange needed coins for people wanting to purchase items or make change. Over the years, the change collection grew to 7,928 pennies. Smith accepted the gift from his employees on his last day on the job and decided to donate it to a good cause — the Putnam County Food Pantry. The food pantry graciously accepted the donation, which Smith cashed in at the bank before handing over. Judy Hopkins, vice president of the food pantry, said she’s never seen a donation like Smith’s, but nonetheless was very thankful for it. She said cash donations are always helpful for the pantry to purchase food or toiletry items that are not available through the River Bend Food Bank. Hopkins urged that the food pantry is available for anyone in need in Putnam County. The food pantry serves about 100 patrons a month, including anywhere between 10 and 20 families. New clients may register any Saturday between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Verification of residence in Putnam County is the only requirement and can best be met by showing a current bill addressed to the new client’s street address. The Putnam County Food Pantry is located in the basement of the Granville United Church of Christ, 103 N. Church St., Granville. Donations to the food pantry can be sent to P.O. Box 96, Granville, IL 61326.

Wall has provided outstanding customer service and demonstrated strong leadership skills throughout her more than 11 years of service with North Central Bank. In addition to her new promotion, Wall will continue as the teller supervisor, assistant compliance officer and member to the NCB Management team. She shared that the thing she loves most about her job is being able to create strong connections with fantastic coworkers and really great customers. When Wall is away from the office, she likes to spend her spare time with family, woodcarving, photography, watching football, riding horses and taking long rides on her motorcycle. In addition to her dedication to NCB, she is also involved in local community groups such as The Valley Carvers Association, TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) program and is a longtime supporter and horse show superintendent at the Marshall-Putnam County Fair. Drug agents made a methamphetamine and cocaine bust Thursday night in Peru. Brian M. Maier, 35, of Peru was charged at 9:11 p.m. Thursday in his residence with unlawful possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) with intent to deliver, Tri-DENT said in a Friday news release. Tri-DENT, assisted by Peru police and the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, obtained and executed a search warrant that yielded about 8 grams of purported methamphetamine and 4 grams of purported cocaine on the resident, police said. The charges are Class 1 felonies carrying four to 15 years in prison. Maier also was wanted on a LaSalle County warrant for failure to appear on a charge of domestic battery, police said.

BRUCE R. STEELE Born: February 3, 1924 Died: February 12, 2021 TONICA — Bruce R. Steele, 97, of Tonica passed away in his home February 12, 2021. Private services will be in the Hurst Funeral Home in Tonica with burial in the Granville Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. He was born February 3, 1924, to James J and Mildred Phillips Steele. He married Phyliss Gene Buhn on February 2, 1947. They were married 53 years until her death in 2000. Bruce’s mother died when he was 5 years old, and his father died when he was 15. He also lost his brother, Burdette, in an accident at Christmas 1932, when Burdette was 15 and Bruce was 11. On the death of his father in 1938, he moved in with his grandparents, James and Elizabeth Steele. Grandfather James had emigrated to the United States from Scotland, and had a career in the mining industry where he was the mine

superintendent of the Mark and Cherry Mines, and was mine superintendent at the time of the Cherry Mine Disaster in 1909. Bruce served in World War II after graduating high school. He was a Radioman 2nd class on the destroyer escort USS Alvin Cockrell, serving in the Western Pacific area escorting aircraft carriers from 1944 to 1946, and served in Japan after the war ended where his ship evacuated American and British prisoners of war. After he left the Navy in 1946, he moved to Tonica when he began farming on the family farm. He also had his own electrical, heating and plumbing business in Tonica. He served on the Tonica Village Board from 1952 to 1970, when he resigned to take over the operation of the village water and sewer plans which he did for 14 years. He also served on the Tonica High School Board for 16 years, 8 years as its president. He was a fireman with the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department for 31 years, including 2 years as chief. He served 20 years as a trustee of Eden Township. He was a member of the Tonica Methodist Church, Putnam County Historical Society, LaSalle County Genealogical Society, Tonica Masonic

Lodge, the American Legion and the Destroyer Escort Association. He is survived by his sons, Robert (Cynthia ) Steele of Granville and James (Karen) Steele of Tonica; five grandchildren, James and Jeff Steele of Tonica, Jennifer (Roger) Konczak of Tonica, Natasha (Hiren) Patel of Woodridge and Matthew (Samantha Minc-Steele) Steele of Morgantown, West Virginia; and four greatgrandchildren, Christian and Sophia Konczak, Ariya Patel and Sarah MincSteele. His latest grandchild, Sarah, was born on his birthday, February 3, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his sister, Marjorie Ann; a brother, James Frederic; two grandchildren, Nathan and Andrew Steele; and his special friend, Edna Johnson. OWASSO, Okla. — Fayrene H. Dickson, 90, of Owasso, Oklahoma (formerly of Granville) passed away on February 14, 2021, at Sequoyah Point Living Center, Owasso, Oklahoma. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be in Forster Chapel Cemetery, Searcy, Arkansas. Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family with the arrangements. She was born on January 13, 1931, in Searcy, Arkansas, to Henry and Carrie (Jowers) Benton. She married Albert Slaughter in 1947 and they moved to Illinois in 1956. Albert passed away on in 1974. She worked at Westclox, Arlans Department Store and Montgomery Wards. She was the department manager at Bergners in Peru and retired in 2000. She married Marion Dickson on February 14, 2000. Marion passed away in 2009. Faye was a member of the Oglesby Baptist Church in Oglesby and its

In reversal of fortunes, Marquette dominates Putnam County Crusaders blank Panthers in 4th quarter in easy Tri-County victory CHARLIE ELLERBROCK cellerbrock@shawmedia.com OTTAWA — It takes time for a coach to figure out the best way to get the most out of his players and to fit those pieces together in their proper places to develop a winning picture from one night to the next as the season goes on. Sometimes it’s as easy as a two-piece puzzle. Other times, like Saturday for Marquette coach Todd Hopkins and Putnam County coach Harold Fay, it’s more like a Rubik’s Cube. In a complete reversal of how the teams played Friday, the Crusaders shook off their disappointing 10-point loss to Seneca and utilized the aggressive, smothering defense that had hurt them so badly only 19 hours before. Marquette limited a solid Putnam County team to only six points in the third quarter and shut them out in the fourth on its way to a 55-25 Tri-County Conference victory in Bader Gymnasium. For PC, the offensive struggles were contrary to its previous effort, which resulted in a 74-23 conference win at home in Granville. The turnarounds left both coaches scratching their heads. “I don’t know what to say. We’re Jeckyl and Hyde,” said Hopkins. “It’s weird. I’m beating my head on the wall last night and then today, we play like this. I’m proud of them for the way they responded. “Last night our first half was bad. We got ourselves in a hole and you can’t do that and expect to come back all the time. We talked before the game about getting off to a good start and we got it. Our defense tonight was good against some really good shooters. They’re young, but they’re going to be a darn good team the next few years, and now I know when we go there (Mar. 3) it’s going be a totally different game.” The contrast was apparent from the start. The Crusaders (6-3 overall, 5-3 T-C) got the offensive jump-start they needed in the opening quarter from Lucas Hoffman, who scored eight of the game’s first 13 points for an 11-2 lead. Ice climbers take advantge of frozen formations at Starved Rock

Four canyons are allowed for ice climbing in state park, including Wildcat Canyon BRIAN HOXSEY bhoxsey@shawmedia.com During the warmer months, there are a handful of wonderful waterfalls in Starved Rock State Park, including spectacular views and sounds from vantage points all around Wildcat Canyon. From the bottom of the canyon, there is the sight of the water rushing over the crest, over 125 feet above, and the echoing sound of the water hitting the rock below. However, when the temperatures start to drop and the air turns cold, the canyon slowly starts to grow more silent as the waterfall turns to ice, forming an eye-popping formation. While amazing to look at, the ice formation also gives an opportunity for many to challenge themselves. They are known as ice climbers. “I wish I would have started as a teen like climbers do today, but I was about 30-something and I’m 70 now,” said Mokena’s Mark Petnuch, a retired science teacher who has climbed the ice many times in Starved Rock and also rock climbed in Colorado. “I was already into mountaineering and rock climbing when I added ice climbing. I think you are always looking for something different and ice climbing became that for me in the early 80s.” Petnuch, who was just an observer on Saturday in Wildcat Canyon due to a recent hip replacement, said he last scaled to the ice formations at the park in 2019, adding that a warm winter in 2020 didn’t allow an opportunity. “I just had to get out and see the ice this year and just report in,” he said. Climbers are allowed in the park only when conditions allow them to climb and have to sign in. Only four canyons are allowed for ice climbing, they include Tonti, La Salle, Ottawa and Wildcat. “Some people that do this or rock climb have goals of reaching the top of the biggest and best formations. I think for many though the goal is really just to have fun and do a little

better each time you climb,” said Petnuch, adding it can be an expensive hobby. “Everything you need equipment-wise to ice climb is totally special,” he said. “A pair of boots can be $300-500, the crampons (a traction device that is attached to footwear to improve mobility on snow and ice) that go on the bottom of the boots and the ice tools, $250 is cheap nowadays, and the ice screws are now around $80 apiece. It’s around $1,000-$1,500 of investment for gear besides things like harnesses, rope and a helmet. The money factor alone keeps a lot of people from getting into it and many climbers just don’t live in climates that give them opportunities in the winter months. “Many look at ice climbers as being the complete, screwiest, outof-control, you are out of your mind people to think we can do this. You know what? They are kind of right. In rock climbing, there is a bolt that is screwed into the rock for stability, this thing (pointing at the ice formation) changes every day and night. But that factor is what draws people to do it.” Tomek Cyrwus, and his girlfriend Vladimira Yanevska, both from Chicago, were preparing to scale the formation at Wildcat, but just before they were ready to go they decided to postpone their climb for another day as hikers and sight-seers in the canyon and around the ice had reached nearly 50. They said that overall safety is the most important thing and that climbing would more than likely make some ice fall and they worried about the people that would be watching from below. “I started with rock climbing,” said Cyrwus, who added he had climbed the ice last Wednesday, and he and Yanevska planned on coming back Sunday, “In places like Devil’s Lake, Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado, California, Wind River, Utah and Arizona. “From an early age, I had trouble trusting people. Rock climbing forced me to trust other people within the rope. You have to trust the person or persons you are climbing with 100% because everyone’s life is on that rope. You can climb solo, but most of the time it’s a two-person climb with a leader.” Lead climbing is a climbing style in which the lead climber wears

Climbers use special shoes with crampons that allow them to dig into the ice. a harness attached to a climbing rope, which in turn is connected to the other climber[s] below. While ascending the route, the lead climber periodically connects the rope to protective equipment — permanent bolts, to which the climber clips quickdraws, or removable protection such as nuts and cams — for safety in the event of a fall. “It takes many times out here to really understand where the ice is good and not good as you ascend,” Cyrwus said. Yanevska said she didn’t know much about climbing before meeting Cyrwus, but quickly found out how physically demanding it was. “Tomek introduced me to ice climbing,” she said, adding she loves it. “He was already over the rock climbing, so his new hobby is this. The very first time I climbed I found out how very physically challenging it is. You need to have strong arms to be able to lift yourself. It’s really not as scary as many people think because it’s high because you really don’t see behind you because of how close you are to the ice as you go up.” Cyrwus, who Petnuch said is “one of the very best, most daring ‘young’ climbers to be around here in the

last 10 years from what he’s seen at a distance” agrees with Petnuch that each person has to set their own goals when starting to climb. “I think everyone has their own goal in mind when getting ready to climb a structure,” said Cyrwus. “I think it’s like a marathon, some people are going to sign up for the 5K or 10K, while others are going to run the full course. Each person has to set a goal and then try to reach it. Maybe it’s getting halfway up the ice formation, or maybe it’s to get to the top, either way, it comes down to each person to set their own goal.”
