Transfer of Perry hospital’s ownership being explored
Perry Memorial Hospital and OSF HealthCare to begin due diligence on possible affiliation BY PCR STAFF news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital Board has approved the pursuit of a non-binding letter of intent to affiliate with OSF HealthCare through a transfer of ownership. The announcement was made in a news release Jan. 28 after the letter of intent pursuit was approved at a hospital board meeting the night before. The discussion to explore a more defined relationship began in August 2019 with representatives of Perry Memorial Hospital, the city of Princeton and OSF HealthCare. According to the news release, over the coming months, Perry Memorial Hospital, the city of Princeton and OSF HealthCare will continue to evaluate the potential transfer of ownership through a due diligence evaluation process. The news release states that a letter of intent is the legal agreement that allows the formal due diligence process to begin. Both parties will more deeply consider the financial and clinical benefits of the proposed transfer of ownership through this process. “Several options have been considered as we have visited OSF HealthCare facilities,” said Linda Gustafson, Perry Memorial Hospital Board chairwoman. “Our next step is to continue the research, review and evaluation of the financial details and possible benefits to our respective organizations as well as to provide full public education of these endeavors,” Gustafson stated. The Perry Memorial Hospital president and chief executive officer, Annette Schnabel, and the board of directors began considering the hospital’s long-term future in mid-2018.

Since that time, they have defined provider and employee retention, increased clinical services, technological advances, and group purchasing through supply chain management as primary areas of focus. “We have a shared goal to maintain and grow quality, local health care services for Princeton and the communities within Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties,” said Bob Sehring, CEO, OSF HealthCare. “We appreciate the opportunity to consider more deeply what the future might look like through a partnership with Perry Memorial Hospital,” Sehring said. Schnabel stated, “The relationship under consideration would bring a depth of clinical options to the community not usually available at independent, city-owned hospitals. OSF HealthCare offers the access to technology, clinical expertise, and other resources necessary to provide care in the future.” The possible transfer of ownership would need to be approved by the city of Princeton, OSF HealthCare and certain regulatory agencies. Representatives of Perry Memorial Hospital, the city of Princeton and OSF HealthCare will provide communities with additional updates and information through-

HENNEPIN — Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn announces that early voting for all county precincts will begin Thursday, Feb. 6, in his office at the courthouse at 120 N. Fourth St. in Hennepin. Early voting will continue through Monday, March 16, on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Kuhn stated. Also, early voting will take place on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. Kuhn said any voter who is a valid registrant in Putnam County may
vote during the early voting period after showing proper identification. “However, any vote cast is final and may not be revoked. As a result, the early voter is not eligible to cast a vote on Election Day,” Kuhn said. The date of the actual primary is Thursday, March 17. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. across the county. Those who recently traveled to China and have symptoms should take notice BY TOM COLLINS, MICHAEL URBANEC AND GOLDIE RAPP Shaw Media A case of coronavirus has spread from one person to another in Chicago, but area health organizations are saying the risk in the Illinois Valley is still low. Hector Gomez, CEO and public health administrator for the Bureau, Putnam, Marshall Health Departments, has been following the coronavirus outbreak through the Center for Disease Control and Illinois Department of Public Health.

As of now, the two agencies say there is low risk of the virus spreading, Gomez reported. Gomez said despite the two cases being confirmed in Chicago, he has no concerns of the virus making its way to the Illinois Valley. He added that after looking into the second case confirmed in Chicago, it turned out to be the husband of the 65-yearold woman who first tested positive. “Obviously they were in very close contact when he was transmitted with the coronavirus, so contact-to-contact is very possible,” he said. Gomez said his agency is urging people to do the same prevention methods someone would do to prevent flu, such as hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes. “Anything you would normally do to prevent the spread of flu, continue to do those things,” he said.

• CORONAVIRUS Continued from Page 5 Meanwhile, a LaSalle businessman who makes frequent trips to China, as well as Chinese boarding students at St. Bede Academy, have been monitoring the situation closely. Jerry Phlippeau, president of the Flipo Group, a LaSalle-based importer and sales business, plans to be in China for business in April, and he’s convinced the epidemic will have leveled off by that time. “I went through SARS — I was in China at that time — and I think it will run its course,” Phlippeau said, recalling the virus that swept through China in 2002 and 2003. That said, the coronavirus already is having an impact on his business. The Chinese government had shut down factories for the Lunar New Year but then extended the shutdown by an additional two weeks due the epidemic. The extended shutdown has been disruptive for the Flipo Group. Chinese boarding students at St. Bede Academy of rural Peru, in eastern Bureau County, are decidedly more worried than Phlippeau. St. Bede Superintendent Ted Struck said the issue isn’t that their families are in the line of fire — most students hail from Hunan province, some distance from where
the epidemic has raged — but rather, the conflicting U.S. and Chinese media reports have them concerned about the threat level. “Chinese people know that what they read and what the media there spits out isn’t necessarily the case,” Struck explained. “So in a situation like this, they’re probably getting conflicting numbers between what they’re seeing here on TV and what their parents are getting back home.” “They’re all very concerned.” Earlier Jan. 30, Struck confirmed St. Bede canceled a trip planned in April to Hunan province. Several American students and teachers had planned to go. To avoid the students incurring expenses for visas and then to have some possibly back out of the trip, the academy canceled the excursion. A LaSalle County Health Department official said the agency is briefed daily by the Center for Disease Control and the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the agency is monitoring the situation closely. “We’re in constant communication with our working partners and based on what the CDC is saying, people have developed mild to severe respiratory illness,” said Jenny Barrie, from the LaSalle County Health Department. Barrie said the symptoms are similar to respiratory flu; the virus causes fever, cough, shortness of breath,

GRANVILLE — Sharon Kay Cress-Bennett, 64, of Granville passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, at Heritage Health Care in Peru. Sharon was born on Aug. 10, 1955, in LaSalle to Francis and Gertrude (Schuda) Pelszynski. She married Andy Bennett on Nov. 4, 1994, in Ottawa. She graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School and continued her education at Illinois State University in Bloomington, where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. Survivors include her husband, Andy Bennett of Granville; two stepchildren, Sina (Brett) Pavia of Milwaukee, Wis., and Robert (Jennifer) Bennett of Ottawa; one stepgrandson, Ashton Bennett; two sisters, Judith (Steven) Wertheimer of Greenwich, Conn., and Barbara (John) O’Brian of Barrington. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Jackie Cress; and one granddaughter, Paige Bennett. No services have been planned at this time. Cremation rites will be accorded. UTICA — Daniel E. Reichen, 84, of Utica died surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru. Daniel was born in Schwer on Dec. 25, 1935, to Rudolph and Katherine (Schafer) Reichen. He married Dorene Maggio Roach on July 15, 1964. She died March 21, 2014. Daniel graduated from Hopkins High School in Granville and LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College. He was a civil engineer for Illinois Department of Transportation for 42 years and then a quality control manager for Advanced Asphalt Company for five years. Daniel enjoyed woodworking, and his biggest project was building his own home in Waltham where he raised his family. He also enjoyed the outdoors, square dancing and traveling. Daniel was a Cub Scout leader, coached Little League baseball and was one of the longest volunteers as a Red Coat for IVCH from 2006 until 2019, where he was logged in for 3,000 hours. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he was their biggest fan. Daniel was a member of St. Mary’s

Brzozowski kicks off town hall meetings
Candidate criticizes Rep. Kinzinger over accessibility; champions unions, higher wages BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com PRINCETON — Dani Brzozowski, the Democratic candidate for the 16th Congressional District, hosted her first town hall meeting on Jan. 30 at the Princeton Public Library in an effort to show she’s more accessible than her opponent. The gathering attracted a fairly full room of people from both LaSalle and Bureau counties — about two dozen — interested in hearing Brzozowski’s ideas and values. Some also were there to express their frustrations about Brzozowski’s opponent this November, incumbent Congressman Adam Kinzinger, a Channahon Republican. The L-shaped district spans westward from near the Indiana line to LaSalle,
Bureau and Putnam counties and then northward to Rockford. People who showed up for the D e m o c r a t ’s eve n t c r i t i c i z e d Kinzing er’s unwillingness to debate his opponents and show up to local functions. One man called out that Kinzinger is “missing in action,” while another man left Thursday’s meeting chanting, “Get Adam out.” Brzozowski said she’s running on her willingness to be accessible, inquisitive and welcoming to her constituents. She offered up her cellphone number to attendees and encouraged phone calls to chat about everyday issues they face. She pointed out Kinzinger’s lack of town hall meetings, saying the handful he’s hosted in the past 10 years he has been in office haven’t been that accessible. “Our representative isn’t here. He’s not accessible at all,” she said. “I don’t know how any of us as representatives could do our jobs without getting face time with the people we’re supposed to be representing, right?” Kinzinger pushed for more town

IVSO announces winners of 2020 Young Performers Competition OTTAWA — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra has announced the winners of the 2020 Young Performers Competition held at Ottawa Township High School Auditorium on Jan. 4. The winner of the junior division was Nora Maier, performing Fauré’s “Pie Jesu.” She is the daughter of Brandi Anderson-Maier and Michael Maier of Peru, and an eighth-grader at Parkside School. Her voice instructor is Jenilyn Roether. The winner of the senior division was Emma Anderson, performing Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto, first movement. She is a senior at LaSalle-Peru High School, and the daughter of Todd and Doreen Anderson of Oglesby. Her trumpet instructor is Dave Peterson. Winners in both divisions will be featured solo-
ists with the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the Ottawa Township High School Auditorium. PC falls to Marquette BY CHARLIE ELLERBROCK Shaw Media GRANVILLE — The Marquette Crusaders fans will see their 49-37 victory over Putnam County in the 94th annual Tri-County Conference Tournament’s consolation championship game as an overwhelming show of good defense. The Panthers faithful will probably look at it as an example of bad luck after more bad luck. The truth is, it was really a combination of those two factors. The Crusaders scrapped throughout and held tourney-host PC without a field goal for a stretch of 12 minutes, 4 seconds, stretching from Luke Pederson’s tip-in in the final seconds before halftime until a running hook shot by Nick Mattern with 3:58 showing in the fourth quarter. In that span, the Panthers missed all 17 shots it took from the field, allowing Marquette — led by senior Sean Kissel’s big third quarter — to rally from a three-point deficit at the break to an 11-point lead just prior
to Mattern’s drought breaker. Putnam County, which finished the game shooting 33 percent, was led by nine points from Luke Pederson and eight from Stephen Mecagni. A combined nine points from Mecagni and Pederson, including the latter’s tip-in of a Pyszka miss at the buzzer, gave the Panthers a 23-20 lead at intermission. But that would be the hosts last field goal for quite some time. Though the drought was broken by Mattern, PC still finished the second-half quarters a combined 5-for26. “The other night we shot the ball really well and that made things easy for us. Now tonight, they’re not going in and we didn’t have an answer,” PC coach Harold Fay said.
