Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce
MISSION STATEMENT
As the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, I am honored to serve the City of Ottawa and the numerous vibrant businesses in our beautiful community. Our Ottawa Area Chamber is celebrating its 110th year of service to our city and surrounding area. Ottawa has an incredible variety of delicious dining destinations and a plethora of boutique shops in our charming, historic downtown.
Our Ottawa Area Chamber, Ottawa Visitors Center, Ottawa Downtown Association, and the City of Ottawa have formed a vibrant partnership that results in numerous accomplishments in our wonderful community. Ottawa is blessed with a rich history, including the first of the famous Lincoln/Douglas Debates. This debate helped to shape the history of our entire nation, and Ottawa is proud to celebrate this amazing cornerstone of democracy.
Quality education has long been a part of Ottawa’s heritage, and our schools reflect this focus on lifelong learning. Illinois Valley Community College has a satellite campus in Ottawa, and the main campus is merely 20 minutes from Ottawa. It is the second oldest community college in the State of Illinois, and students have access to a high-quality education at a reasonable cost.
We have three picturesque State of Illinois parks nearby and numerous city parks in our community. Ottawa is truly one of the gems in the Midwest, and we enjoy sharing our amenities with visitors and citizens alike.
Please come for a visit ... and you may stay for a lifetime!
JAY K. MCCRACKEN Executive Director

• Advertising opportunities including e-blasts, social media, and banner ads
• Educational seminars and leadership development
• A powerful online presence through the Chamber website
• And so much more!
Plus, members gain direct access to community leaders, job seekers, and potential customers—opening doors that might otherwise stay closed. This is just the start!

On behalf of our City Council, our dedicated staff, and the people who call Ottawa home, welcome.
We’re glad you’re here.
Ottawa is a community that values connection. Connection between neighbors, between businesses, and between the past that shaped us and the future we’re building together. Whether you’re visiting for a day, considering putting down roots, or already part of our story, you’ll find a place that takes pride in both its character and its momentum.
What makes Ottawa special isn’t just one thing, it’s the way everything comes together. It’s our historic downtown filled with locally owned shops and restaurants, our parks and riverfront that invite you to slow down and stay awhile, and a business community that understands the importance of supporting one another. It’s also the people, the folks who still believe in a handshake, a wave, and showing up for each other.
We’re proud of where we come from, and just as committed to where we’re going. Through strong partnerships with the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce, our downtown organizations, local businesses, and community groups, we continue to invest in a city that is welcoming, vibrant, and full of opportunity.
So take your time here. Walk our streets, explore our trails, support our businesses, and get to know the people who make this place what it is.
If there’s anything we can do to make your visit, or your stay, even better, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re glad you’re here.
Sincerely,
ROBB HASTY Mayor, City of Ottawa
Welcome to Ottawa, the Middle of Everywhere! At the Ottawa Visitors Center, we’re proud to share the people, places, and experiences that make our community truly special. Whether you’re here for a day or a lifetime, we invite you to explore, connect, and enjoy everything Ottawa has to offer.
Signed,
Ottawa Visitors Center
Welcome to Downtown Ottawa - the heart of Ottawa, Illinois, a place where historic charm meets vibrant energy, and something is always happening just around the corner.

We invite you to explore it all using the Explore Downtown Ottawa Map: your go-to guide for everything downtown. From retail shops and restaurants to public art, historic landmarks, and hidden gems, the map makes it easy to discover all that Ottawa has to offer.
None of this would be possible without the incredible partnership we share with the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce. We are deeply grateful for their collaboration and shared commitment to supporting our local businesses, strengthening our economy, and creating a welcoming experience for visitors and residents alike.
Whether you’re here for a day, a weekend, or a lifetime, we’re so glad you’re here. Welcome to Downtown Ottawa. We can’t wait for you to explore, experience, and enjoy.
Warmly,
Ottawa Downtown Association

The City of Ottawa is deeply woven into the fabric of the state’s and nation’s history. Founded in 1830 at the confluence of the Fox and Illinois Rivers, the community has long been a destination for trade and commerce. The Illinois & Michigan Canal, built in the 1830s and 1840s, put Ottawa on the shipping route that connected Chicago to the Illinois River and subsequently the Mississippi River. The city was incorporated in 1853. Five years later, Ottawa sealed its place in national history books as the site of the first LincolnDouglas debate in August 1858, which shaped the nation. Ottawa proudly honors its rich heritage with monuments, museums, and guided tours that weave tales of political courage and pioneer spirit.
Multiple Ottawa residents have contributed to the improvement and enrichment of the United States, such as John Hossack, who opened his home as an Underground Railroad station in the 1860s, Boy Scouts of America founder William D. Boyce, and General W.H.L. Wallace, the highest ranking Union officer
who was killed at Shiloh during the Civil War. Wallace was a close friend of President Lincoln, former States Attorney, and considered one of the Union’s greatest generals by U.S. Grant.
A somber chapter in the city’s history is the case of fatal radium poisoning at the Radium Dial Company, which operated in Ottawa from 1918 to 1936. The Radium Girls were young women employed at the factory and exposed to toxic radium while painting watch dials, leading to severe illness and death. Their fight for justice became a landmark case that helped establish important workplace safety regulations and labor rights in the United States.
Ottawa was home to the Peltier Glass Company from 1886 through 2010 and was known for manufacturing novelty marbles in the the 20th century. A mural celebrating the glass manufacturer stands on Jefferson Street.
Today, Ottawa is the county seat and largest city in La Salle County with a population of 18,840 residents. The city is situated along Interstate 80 and has

nearby access to Interstate 39. U.S. Route 6 also runs through Ottawa and intersects with Illinois Route 23. A regional airport is about 20 miles west of Ottawa in the city of Peru.
About 90 minutes south of Chicago, Ottawa is a tourism destination due to its abundance of recreation and its vibrant shopping and dining scenes. Ottawa is known for a beautifully streetscaped downtown with a botanical aesthetic. This district is a main draw for both residents and visitors that remains bustling yearround. The community keeps a full calendar of events for visitors and locals (read more on page 20).
Forward-thinking city leadership incentivizes businesses to establish and grow in Ottawa, including a downtown tax-increment financing district and a facade improvement program. Major employers who choose Ottawa as their home include national retailers, warehouse distribution centers, manufacturers, and mining operations. (See a full list of major employers on page 17.)

Nature and adventure are only minutes away when you’re in Ottawa. From a world-class skydiving destination to Illinois’ top-visited state park, there’s no shortage of outdoor recreation for residents and visitors.
Ottawa borders Illinois’ triple crown of state parks: Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, and Buffalo Rock State Park.
Within a 15-minute drive from Ottawa, Starved Rock State Park is the state’s top-visited park, holding a record of approximately 3 million visitors. Hikers at Starved Rock can explore sandstone bluffs that jut above the Illinois River, canyons, waterfalls, and wooded trails. The park is stunning year-round, with flowing waterfalls and wildflower blooms in spring, colorful fall foliage, and frozen ice columns in winter. Next door to Starved Rock is Matthiessen State Park. Descend into the canyons to explore the Upper and Lower Dells, where visitors can walk stepping-stone paths across creeks, view Lake Falls waterfall beneath an arched bridge, and weave through shallow sandstone caves near Cascade Falls. The park is iconic for its annual sunflower field, with acres of yellow blooms on display from mid-July through August.
Buffalo Rock State Park sits on Ottawa’s western border, just past the village of Naplate. This easily walkable park includes blufftop views over the Illinois River and allows visitors an up-close view of the two resident bison, Cocoa and Hope.
Thrill-seekers of any skill level can visit Skydive Chicago, located north of Ottawa. This skydiving center attracts jumpers across the nation and globe, and first-time skydivers are welcome. The team at Skydive Chicago instructs new skydivers through their inaugural leap with a tandem jump (paired with an experienced skydiver). For those who get hooked on the adrenaline-pumping experience, Skydive Chicago offers an Advanced Freefall Program to train returnees for solo jumps. The facility holds multiple world records and continually invites skydivers to attempt new records. It also hosts community events, such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt & Bunny Jump, in which the Easter Bunny arrives by parachute before children search the grounds for eggs.

The Fox River and Illinois River converge in Ottawa, making it a prime destination for river recreation. From spring through fall, you’re bound to see people fishing, boating, kayaking, tubing, and paddleboarding around downtown Ottawa and beyond. Bring your own watercraft or rent one from Quest Watersports in Ottawa. Visitors also can book a campsite along the river at the Kayak Starved Rock Campground and rent a canoe or kayak from Kayak Starved Rock.
Don’t miss the marinas. At Heritage Harbor, guests will find a full-service marina that includes vacation rentals, boat rentals, and a harborside restaurant. Starved Rock Marina, just west of Ottawa, offers an affordable getaway with a focus on family fun. The facility is home to a boutique, Bar & Bistro, store, and even pontoon rentals.
For a uniquely Ottawa experience on the river, take a cruise on the Sainte Genevieve, a sternwheel riverboat docked in Ottawa. Guests can sit on the upper deck in the fresh air to view riverside bluffs and Illinois River islands that are home to nesting bald eagles, or sit in the temperature-controlled cabin below that includes a full bar. Sunset cruises, narrated tours, and live music are among the riverboat’s offerings.

For a leisurely jaunt of fresh air, enjoy downtown Ottawa on foot. View the architecture of vaulted churches, the historic Reddick Mansion, and the Appellate Court building. Stroll through Washington Square and circle the fountain, which commemorates the site of the first Lincoln-Douglas debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas.
Ottawa has won two America in Bloom awards for its downtown streetscaping and beautification, and it’s easy to see why. While you walk, you can admire the greenery and flowers in places such as Washington Square and LaSalle Street.

Ottawa sits along the 96-mile Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail, a popular attraction for walkers and cyclists. Bring your bike or rent one in town to explore miles of wooded trail to the east or a remote stretch of marshy grasses to the west. Remnants of the canal’s past add a sightseeing element to the experience. The last I&M Canal Toll House in existence stands in downtown Ottawa next to a replica canal boat. About 3 miles west of the Toll House is Lock 12, a stone chamber where water was raised and lowered for boats to move through the canal. Near Fox River Park in Ottawa, cyclists and walkers can cross the canal’s old aqueduct across the Fox River.

“Revolution” mural on the Central Life Building

Ottawa is a cultural hub in the region that celebrates the arts and is a destination for entertainment.
Outdoor art is abundant throughout downtown. One of the most popular pieces is “Revolution,” mind-tricking mural by John Pugh. Painted with the Trompe l’œil (“trick of the eye”) technique, the four-story-tall mural looks like the brick walls are rotating on the Central Life Building. Eight other murals are within walking distance, such as “Day of the Great Debate” commemorating the Lincoln-Douglas debate in Ottawa and “Imagine and Learn with Bob McGrath,” a colorful “Sesame Street” mural honoring former PBS star and Ottawa native Bob McGrath. Other outdoor artwork includes mosaics and sculptures in and near downtown. Open Space Art Gallery sells works by local artists and hosts regular classes

and workshops. In the summer, shoppers can stroll through the Third Friday Makers Market to view and buy local artwork. Venture north of downtown to Nell’s Woodland to see the reverse-curve pedestrian bridge crossing one of the trail’s ravines.
For performing arts and live entertainment, check out the Ottawa Center for the Arts, which features two downtown venues housed inside former churches. The performance lineup includes music, dance, lectures, comedy, photography, and more. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for the annual Music in the Park concert series, which brings free live music to Washington Square on Saturday evenings from mid-June through early September. Live music is an integral part of Ottawa’s nightlife at a variety of pubs and venues as well.
Other cultural highlights include the city’s museums and historical sites. Tour the Reddick Mansion for an elegant glimpse of the past, or explore Ottawa’s connection to the founding of the Boy Scouts of America at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum. In the nearby village of Utica, the La Salle County Historical Society’s museum complex explores the history of the region, and farther down the road in the city of La Salle is another scenic mansion: the Hegeler-Carus Mansion.
Ottawa is home to additional entertainment and recreation including Reddick Public Library, a movie theater, arcade, bowling alleys, and parks.

Supporting local businesses means investing in our community, strengthening our economy, and creating a thriving place for all.
Whether you’re shopping, dining, or choosing services – every dollar spent locally makes a difference!
What happens when we don’t shop locally?
When we don’t shop, use, and support our local businesses, we reduce the amount of money that is circulated and reinvested into our community.
The Discover Ottawa Gift Card, created in partnership with the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce and the Ottawa Downtown Association, is the perfect way to support local businesses while giving a thoughtful and flexible gift! Redeemable at over 30 businesses in Downtown Ottawa,
this card, available online year-round, keeps dollars local, strengthening our community and boosting the local economy. You can purchase these cards on the Chamber website (www.ottawachamberillinois.com) or through the ODA website (www.ottawadowntownassociation.org).
Every dollar spent locally pays dividends for the community that online sales cannot. Local business owners also support other area businesses and sponsor community events, fundraisers, and sports teams.
Our unique local businesses add to the charm of our community, making it vibrant and giving it character. Keep your eyes peeled as our Chamber members and select businesses participating in the Discover Ottawa Gift Cards have distinct stickers in their storefront windows.

stroll La Salle Street in downtown Ottawa
Downtown Ottawa is one of the region’s premier shopping destinations for antiques, books, toys, games, gifts, collectibles, home decor, outdoor decor, furniture, office supplies, clothing, formal wear, jewelry, accessories, and more. The tree-lined sidewalks of La Salle Street and its myriad of blooming flowers from spring through autumn make it easy to slow down and stroll downtown’s main artery, where shoppers will find a variety of boutiques and shops. Be sure to explore the side streets for the full downtown retail experience, including the Main Street Antique District. Also discover local artisans, with products and artwork created by hand right here in Ottawa.
Hop in the car to experience more shopping opportunities throughout the city, ranging from locally owned, oneof-a-kind businesses to chain retail stores that fulfill everyday needs. Those who enjoy the random discoveries of secondhand shopping can visit a handful of resale destinations. For groceries, the city has a variety of familiar nationwide locations, or you can visit Handy Foods — this small grocer is an Ottawa icon with a devoted customer base. If you find yourself dreaming about a new set of wheels as you drive around the city, shop Ottawa for a vehicle as well. The city boasts multiple dealerships that sell Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Mazda, Ford, Kia, Honda, Toyota, and more. For two wheels instead of four, check out Starved Rock Harley-Davidson. Or, if traveling by water is your dream, visit Quest Watersports.
Explore the locally owned businesses in Ottawa for unique wares and items that will enhance your life.
Mansion and Gardens

One of the most expensive and ornate private homes in the Midwest when completed in 1858, the Mansion was built by businessman, politician, and philanthropist William Reddick. Home to the Reddick family for nearly 30 years, the mansion anchors Washington Square, site of the first Lincoln-Douglas debate.
