Oilers, Stars face off in early test of Western Conference contenders

As the 2025-26 NHL season turns to November, two of the NHL’s Western Conference heavyweights clash Tuesday night as the Edmonton Oilers head to American Airlines Center in Dallas to take on the Dallas Stars in what could easily pass as an early post-season preview. The game airs live on Hulu and ESPN.

The atmosphere may feel more like April than early November when the Edmonton Oilers roll into Dallas. The Oilers enter the season with unfinished business after consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup finals led by all-star captain Connor McDavid, who is coming off another electrifying MVP caliber season with 24 goals, 74 assists and 100 points.

McDavid continues to be the heartbeat of the franchise, and his chemistry with superstar Leon Draisaitl continues to anchor an offense that few teams can contain. But, this season is more than just goals for the Oilers — it’s about closing the deal when it matters, specifically in their defensive growth and goaltending consistency down the stretch.

Standing in their way are the Dallas Stars, who look every bit like playoff contenders themselves. The Stars boast one of the league’s most balanced lineups, combining experience and

depth with young talent ready to push further in the playoffs.

Rising star Jason Robertson will be looking to continue the momentum from last season after posting 80 points through 35 goals and 45 assists, with Jamie Benn continuing providing the steady leadership, and Miro Heiskanen bringing his elite poise and calm presence on the blueline.

Both teams have their eyes set on deep playoff runs and will treat this more than just another game in November. For the Oilers to go deep in the post-season, McDavid will need to set the tone. If the Stars want to prove they belong among the West’s elite, slowing him down will be key.

Breaking sad: Gilligan, Seehorn return for new collab ‘Pluribus’

Twenty years ago, the name Vince Gilligan elicited very little response from the average television viewer. Those who did recognize the name were more than likely “X-Files” fans who remembered it from 127 sets of opening credits for the show, all of which indicated that Gilligan was an executive producer between 1996 and 2002. All of that changed as of 2008, however, and now Gilligan’s name is synonymous with his finest creation, “Breaking Bad,” as well as its legally inclined spinoff, “Better Call Saul.”

And although it has been 12 years since the end of former series and three years since the finale for the latter, Gilligan is still very much in the business of making good television. He is also still in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Gilligan’s newest project, “Pluribus,” premieres Friday, Nov. 7, on Apple TV+.

Kept very much a mystery, “Pluribus” sees the reunion of Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn, the latter of whom portrayed Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk, “Nobody,” 2021) ex-wife and one-time business partner Kim Wexler in 61 episodes of “Better Call Saul.”

According to an interview between Seehorn and Polygon reporter Jake Kleinman, Gilligan approached Seehorn during “Better Call Saul” and after filming eventually wrapped, asking if the actress would be interested in a genre-bending project with a sci-fi bent. Seehorn, of course, accepted the offer.

“He came to me as ‘Saul’ was ending, and said, ‘Well, I wrote something for you, if you’re interested,’ which is classic Vince,” Seehorn recalled to Polygon. “When I stopped crying, I was like, ‘Yes, I’m interested.’ But he said, ‘I’m not ready to show

it to you.’ And I said, ‘That’s okay. I’m on board.’”

Seehorn had very little idea what Gilligan had planned for the series, but she knew she wanted to be a part of it — a feeling many fans of the writer/producer have shared since his days with “The X-Files.” Upon learning the new show would be rooted in Gilligan’s sci-fi/uncanny origins, Seehorn noted her delight, both for her involvement and for the uniqueness of the project itself.

“I was so excited when Vince told me there was a sci-fi element to it, and that it’s more psychological sci-fi, less space sci-fi,”

Seehorn shared with Polygon, noting, “It’s the kind of show that, even if I wasn’t in it, it would be my type of show, because it engenders conversations about, like, ‘What do you think about that? What would your position be, should you find yourself here?’”

With just four trailers, a phone number (202-808-3981) and an indication that the series follows the most miserable person on Earth, who must save the world from happiness, to provide series clues as of writing, many are asking why the marketing is so cryptic? Isn’t promotional material meant to entice and provide information so the viewer can know what they are tuning in for?

Seehorn has a simple answer for that, too.

“Vince is asking you to experience this as it comes,” the actress says. “He’s playing with our preconceived notions about not just where we think the story is going to go, but what we would do in a certain situation.”

So what will you do? Will you call the number or wait to tune in for the premiere?

“Pluribus” begins Friday, Nov. 7, on Apple TV+.

celebrity q&a

Bethany Joy Lenz OF THE CHRISTMAS SECRET ON HALLMARK

Q: I’ve seen advertisements for new Christmas movies on the cable channels, but I haven’t seen Bethany Joy Lenz mentioned for any of them. Does she have a new one this year?

A: She doesn’t. Chances are good that it was a matter of scheduling, since she’s had a very busy year, and many films that appear at the end of the year are made well before then. During 2025, Lenz has traveled to participate in many events connected to the memoir she published late last year, “Dinner for Vampires.” She also has stayed active with the podcast she does with fellow “One Tree Hill” alums Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan called “Drama Queens.” However, that doesn’t mean Lenz won’t be very visible anyway during the 24/7 Christmas movie marathons that are traditional on several cable channels during the holiday season. Those outlets need as many titles as they can get, and they now have big reserves of such films, having made them for so many years — and especially on Hallmark Channel, but also on Lifetime to a degree, Lenz has been a factor in those.

For Hallmark, her first yuletide film was “The Christmas Secret” (2014), which still gets plenty of repeats even outside of the seasonal period. It took her a while to get back to the channel for more holiday tales, but once she did, they kept coming. Additional examples include “Five Star Christmas” (2020), “An Unexpected Christmas” (2021) and “A Biltmore Christmas” (2023).

Lifetime also has benefited from Lenz’s presence, with a couple of Christmas-timed projects typically getting annual repeats there. The first was “Snowed-Inn Christmas” (2017), and she followed that with “Poinsettias for Christmas” (2018). You can pretty much expect to see all of the aforementioned pictures in the coming weeks, and it’s also worth checking the channels’ digital outlets to see if those movies are available there as well.

“Palm Royale” - Season 2 (Apple TV+ — Nov. 12, Season Premiere)

In a new season of this dark comedy series, Maxine (Kristen Wiig) is left a social pariah after a scandalous public breakdown. She’ll have to draw on her deep well of cleverness and cunning to prove once and for all that not only does she belong, but she just might have what it takes to rule this town. Along the way, she will uncover untold truths and finally understand what this town is truly built on: secrets, lies and the occasional felony.

“Playdate” (Prime Video — Nov. 12, Movie Premiere)

When recently unemployed accountant Brian (Kevin James) agrees to a playdate with charismatic stay-at-home dad Jeff (Alan Ritchson) and their sons, he expects an easy afternoon of small talk and football tossing. Instead, he’s thrust into a chaotic scramble to stay alive as they are pursued by a ruthless team of mercenaries. Brian stumbles through one ridiculous obstacle after another — with his panic and zero tactical skills a stark contrast to Jeff’s unsettling calmness. Sarah Chalke, Alan Tudyk, Benjamin Pajak, Banks Pierce, Hiro Kanagawa, Stephen Root and Isla Fisher also star.

Masters of musicality: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame welcomes Class of 2025 in live ceremony

The star-studded 40th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony takes place Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, while streaming live on Disney+ for music fans across the country.

With top-notch artists such as Elton John (“Rocket Man”), Olivia Rodrigo (“Deja Vu”) and Doja Cat (“Paint The Town Red”) announced as some of the evening’s guests — as either performers or presenters — the upcoming celebration will see the introduction of the Rock Hall’s Class of 2025, including Bad Company (“Shooting Star”), Chubby Checker (“The Twist”), Joe Cocker (“Feelin’ Alright?”), Cyndi Lauper (“Time After Time”), OutKast (“Hey Ya!”), Soundgarden (“Black Hole Sun”) and The White Stripes (“Seven Nation Army”).

Both Salt-N-Pepa (“Push It!”) and Warren Zevon (“Werewolves of London”) will be in attendance as recipients of the Musical Influence Award, while Thom Bell (“Love Is the Message”), Nicky Hopkins (“Jet Airliner”) and Carol Kaye (“Slick Cat”) will be presented Musical Excellence Awards. Furthermore, producer Lenny Waronker is celebrated with the Ahmet Ertegun Award, given to industry professionals known for having a major influence on today’s rock ‘n’ roll culture.

Additionally, Missy Elliott (“Work It”), Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers (“Can’t Stop”), Iggy Pop of The Stooges (“I Wanna Be Your Dog”), Beck (“Loser”), Brandi Carlile (“The Story”), JID (“Enemy”), Killer Mike (“RUN”), Maxwell (“Ascension”),

Questlove (“You Got Me”), Sleepy Brown (“The Way You Move”), Taylor Momsen (“Just Tonight”), Teddy Swims (“Lose Control”), Twenty One Pilots (“Heathens”), RAYE (“Escapism.”) and TV legend David Letterman (“Late Show with David Letterman”) are all said to make appearances throughout the night, though it has yet to be announced whether the stars will be performing or presenting awards to their industry cohorts.

“Each year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony brings together the most influential artists in music today to honor their heroes who have inspired their music and careers,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, says. “These artists come from around the world to create lifetime musical moments that will live on forever.”

A once-in-a-lifetime event overflowing with talent, praise and performances, the 40th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will stream on Disney+ Saturday, Nov. 8.
