FROM THE OSWEGO AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GREETINGS

Hello, my name is Angie Hibben, and I am the President/CEO of the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce. We have spent the last 42 years supporting the business community in and around Oswego! We ended 2025 with 558 members strong and growing. Our members range from non-for-profit to some of the largest corporations in the area, and the industries/ business types they represent are just as diverse.

I am in my 19th year of working for the chamber, and it has been a joy to meet all the businesses, new and old to the community, and to watch this community grow. Oswego is a great place to live, work, and play, and I look forward to meeting more people as the year progresses.

Our annual Hometown Expo back at Oswego High School was held on Feb. 28th and was a great success, with 109 booths full of businesses for every type of need the community might have. Mark your calendars for next year on Feb. 27, 2027. We are continuing our very successful New Resident Program, our golf outing, Fraidycat 5k/8k & Meow Mile, among many ribbon cuttings, Coffee with the Chamber, and Business after Business activities.

Last year, we had 115 events, including Lunch & Learns, a Jingle Bell Jog, and we will continue meeting with our

non-for-profit groups. The Oswego Downtown Association is an arm of the chamber and also has events and some opportunities to sponsor and network/promote your business.

As always, I would encourage you, as a business owner, to join the Oswego Area Chamber. This year, there is a renewed sense of energy and excitement throughout our community. Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to Oswego, we’re proud to have you here as we continue building on our momentum.

Since our founding in 1852, Oswego has grown into a vibrant community of 40,000 residents, remaining the largest municipality in Kendall County. Our reputation for safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community continues to make Oswego an exceptional place to live and raise a family.

This year brings especially exciting news. After years of residents expressing interest, both Trader Joe’s and HomeGoods have officially announced plans to open locations in Oswego. These two highly sought-after retailers represent exactly the kind of quality commercial investment our community has long desired. Their decision to choose Oswego reflects our continued growth, strong demographics, and the support of residents who shop locally. We know many in our community have waited years to hear this announcement, and we look forward to welcoming both stores.

2026 will also be a major year for infrastructure investment in Oswego. We will break ground on transmission mains that will bring Lake Michigan water to the community and deliver high-quality, reliable, and sustainable drinking water for generations to come. Construction will also begin on an expanded Public Works facility, allowing vehicles and equipment to be stored indoors to better protect public assets while accommodating our growing staff. In addition, work will start on a new roundabout at Douglas Road and Wolfs Crossing as part of the Wolfs Crossing modernization project. This improvement will enhance safety and improve traffic flow along one of our busiest corridors.

Oswego’s partnership with the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce remains vital as we support local entrepreneurs and attract new investment. Our commercial corridors along Rt. 34, Orchard Road, Rt. 30, and Rt. 71 continue to expand with new retail and dining options. Downtown Oswego remains the heart of the community, where historic charm meets exciting revitalization through festivals, unique shops, and outstanding restaurants.

Outside of downtown, entertainment venues like the Kendall 11 movie theatre and Venue 1012 provide gathering places that strengthen our sense of community year-round.

Looking ahead, 2026 is a meaningful year not only for Oswego but for our nation as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. Throughout the year, the Village and our community partners will host special events and programs to commemorate this historic milestone. As I look around Oswego today, I don’t just see storefronts and business parks; I see a lifetime of memories. I was raised in Oswego, and over 25 years ago, I took a leap of faith and started my first business right here while I was still in high school. Back then, I had more ambition than experience, but this community took a chance on me.

Today, in addition to running my business, I have the privilege of serving as an assistant professor of business at Waubonsee Community College. Every day, I see that same entrepreneurial spark in my students that I felt decades ago. VILLAGE HAS BUSINESS-FRIENDLY APPROACH TO GROW LOCAL ECONOMY

The Village of Oswego is committed to offering strong support through a wide variety of economic incentives to both local businesses and new businesses wishing to settle in the community. Through these efforts, Oswego provides a very positive and business-friendly atmosphere that fosters business growth, innovation, and new jobs that will strengthen the local economy.

“We have a lot of different tools to assist businesses,” says Kevin Leighty, Oswego Economic Development Director, “that new and growing businesses and/or property owners may be eligible for.”

Financial assistance opportunities include: waiver of building permit fees; grant awards; revolving loans, UIRVDA enterprise zone state tax exemption on building materials; tax rebate program; and technical assistance through the “Business Concierge” program, real estate site searches, and free resources through the department’s business and workforce development partners.

The Village of Oswego has introduced the new “Business Concierge” program and Leighty notes this new assistance program was created to provide a more personalized approach to the development review and permitting processes through expedited, personalized support for new businesses to streamline development and construction with assistance for navigating the permit and review process.

“We are a business-friendly Village and would like to help businesses to succeed in every way we can,” he said. “I would be very happy to discuss the program with those who are interested in growing their business within our Village.”

Leighty notes that “going back to the Economic Development Incentive Award (EDIA) and our Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) programs, the Village has issued a combined $700,000 in funding and generated over $1.5 million in capital investment within the Oswego community since 2022.

The Downtown TIF District provides Tax Increment Financing to support redevelopment, infrastructure, and public improvements.

The RLF has been a popular incentive, and the village will match up to 50% of the eligible project’s costs for the loan applicants. These low-interest loans with flexible terms are available for businesses within corporate limits.

The EDIA and RLF recipients have received funds for a variety of critical uses, including: interior and exterior building improvements; parking lot replacements; new watermain and/ or watermain improvements; full-service restaurant buildout; equipment and interior buildout; and new construction of a three-story commercial building.

In addition, there is also a tax rebate program incentive available on a case-by-case basis where applicants demonstrate a financial need. This program has historically been used for restaurants and large sales tax generators, among others.

For even more assistance, Leighty is available to connect interested businesses directly with programs at the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee College and mentoring opportunities for business owners through SCORE Fox Valley.

Helping a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters brings fulfillment to the “Big” mentor while providing friendship, trust, and fun to the “Little”. CASA is an acronym for “court-appointed special advocate”. This special volunteering effort is based on being the voice and advocate for a child in court. CASA Kendall County advocates for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect. Volunteers are supported and trained. Once sworn as a court advocate, they will be assigned to monitor a child’s case throughout its duration.

PARK DISTRICT FOCUSED ON LEISURE, WELLNESS & RECREATION

The Oswegoland Park District is just fresh off memories of celebrating its hallmark 75th anniversary last year and now it’s primed to continue its mission of providing the community with even more options for leisure, wellness, and recreation.

Encompassing over 1300 acres, the park district offers a wide variety of 67 diverse parks throughout the community, ranging from neighborhood and community parks; sports fields, splash pads, swimming pools, picnic areas, natural area parks, trails, and greenways, sustaining the beauty of local nature. There are places to enjoy disc golf, fish, canoe, kayak, and play every kind of imaginable sport to compete with fun.

Chad Feldotto, Oswegoland Park District Director, began his journey with the park district twenty years ago in 2006. Previously, in his position as director of parks and planning, he was part of the growth and exciting changes taking place throughout the park district during that time.

Today, Feldotto reflects on the community’s growth with new Oswego residents and the exciting changes that lie ahead. “We are proud to maintain our community focus and offer top-level parks and exceptional programs,” says Feldotto. “I was happy to be involved with the development of Prairie Point Community Park from the beginning. With over 66 acres, it provides so many choices with soccer, softball, and baseball fields; sand and volleyball courts; skate park; ice skating; walking/jogging path; and so much more.”

Feldotto also notes there is an exciting new first for the Oswegoland Park District coming this year - its first indoor recreational location situated in the former LA Fitness facility at 201 Odgen Falls Blvd. in Oswego. Updates will be made in the building, and when it opens, it will provide indoor recreation and aquatics programs, including the park district’s first indoor basketball court and first indoor pool. Other planned uses include swim lessons, small group classes, athletics, and miscellaneous indoor activities to serve residents of all ages.

The Oswegoland Park District’s most cherished community annual event, PrairieFest, is on track again for Father’s Day weekend on June 18-21, 2026, at PrairieFest Park. “PrairieFest is the largest festival in Kendall County,” says Laura Finch, director of marketing and customer service for the Oswegoland Park District, “and families can enjoy the fun with free admission, free parking, and free musical entertainment.” This year’s lineup includes Radio Gaga, Chris Cagle, American Authors, and Conjunto Atardecer. In addition, don’t forget the carnival rides, tasty food, and 5K race.

Finch adds that the success of PrairieFest is the combination of the entire community coming together through supportive sponsorships, plus volunteers and local organizations who donate their time and efforts to make it a success.

The Oswegoland Park District offers a myriad of paths and places to enjoy recreational fun all year long for residents residing in Oswego, Montgomery, Plainfield, and Aurora. It is also clear to see that it is on a successful path to keep the momentum building for everyone.

Senior centers serve as treasured assets for communities. They offer older adults access to multiple resources and an opportunity to become actively involved with others. The Oswegoland Senior and Community Center goes an additional step forward and provides the best of both worlds, serving the entire community. What people will find is a warm environment that offers a variety of programs and activities for personal and social fulfillment for people of all ages.

“We have no age requirements as we are a senior and community center,” says Michele Bergeron, executive director of the Oswegoland Senior and Community Center. “Our guests here are from all age groups. They have fun while building relationships with each other, resulting in long-lasting friendships.”

Serving 1700 people annually, the Oswegoland Senior and Community Center is located in the former Oswego Police Department building. With this new location, the Center

provides an expanded space to continue its mission of promoting the well-being of seniors and providing interesting programs and activities for everyone.

Recently, it was announced that the Center will receive a $2.5 million Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DECO) grant for funding of capital improvements, such as a new main entrance, elevator, and other needed renovations.

“None of this could have ever been possible without the support of our local legislators,” said Bergeron, “including Illinois State Senators Linda Holmes (42nd District) and Sue Rezin (38th District) and Illinois State Representative Stephanie Kifowit (84th District). “This enables us now to concentrate on raising funds to pay down the mortgage through our ‘Mortgage Freedom Fund’. A donor contributing with a $1,000.00 gift will be recognized as a ‘Legacy Leader’ on the Center’s donor wall.”

The Oswegoland Senior and Community Center provides a wide variety of programs and activities, including health and fitness; arts and hobbies; fun and games; shopping and day trips; and enrichments programs like Ask A Cop, Caregiver Support, and much more.

In addition, the Center provides 2 monthly luncheons provided by Meals on Wheels for seniors with an age limit of 60 years and older. “Our guests are asked for a $7.00 donation for the meal,” adds Bergeron. For those interested in attending, they are held the 2nd Thursday and 4th Tuesday of each month.

With the exciting expansion of the facility resulting in new programs and activities, there is a need for more volunteer opportunities. Do you have a special hobby or craft you’d like to share in one of their instruction workshops? Do you enjoy being outdoors and would like to help with outdoor yard work? These are just some of the ways community members can reach out and contribute their talents.

For a child navigating an uncertain system, you could be the one consistent adult who shows up, listens and advocates on their behalf.

Through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), volunteers are specially trained to advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. No legal background is required, only compassion, reliability and a willingness to stand up for a child who needs you.

the Oswego Fire Protection District (OFPD).

Over the past year, our department has seen an increase in call volume, reaching almost 7,000 incidents. This is a significant rise, highlighting the expanding needs of our community. We are a Fire Protection District. Our coverage area includes Oswego, portions of Montgomery, Plainfield, Yorkville, and areas within unincorporated Kendall and Will Counties. We remain committed to providing timely and effective services to all residents and businesses within these regions.

The demand for fire, rescue, emergency medical services, and other critical responses continue to grow. This surge in call volume is a direct reflection of both our expanding population and the complexities of modern-day emergencies. Despite these challenges, our dedicated firefighters and paramedics continue to provide high-quality service, and we are actively working to ensure we are prepared to meet these rising demands.

To better serve you, we are making continuous improvements to our operations, staffing, and equipment. Our goal is to maintain efficient response time while ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. We also encourage community members to take advantage of our prevention programs, educational resources, and safety initiatives. PFIZENMAIER & STERIOTI

(same call): Police responded to a report of a suicidal subject armed with a handgun. After locating him and establishing contact, Sergeant Sterioti and Crisis Negotiator Officer Pfizenmaier negotiated with the subject for more than three hours, ultimately convincing him to unload the weapon and surrender peacefully. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation under an involuntary petition. Their actions directly prevented a loss of life and merit the department’s Lifesaving Award.

SCHNEIDER:

Officer Schneider responded to a cardiac arrest of a female. He immediately took over CPR from the victim’s son until paramedics arrived and obtained a pulse, and the patient was transported to the hospital alive. Schneider’s quick actions, calm leadership, and effective use of training were life-saving and deserving of recognition.

FERNANDEZ:

Officer Fernandez responded to a well-being check and found a person with severe, self-inflicted cuts and significant blood loss. He immediately applied a tourniquet, quickly reapplied a second when the first failed, and controlled the remaining bleeding with an Israeli bandage. He placed the person in a recovery position and briefed arriving medics, who transported the patient to the hospital.

His quick, decisive actions and proper use of lifesaving equipment likely prevented the person from bleeding to death.

THE URIBES

Sergio Uribe Jr. and Ana Uribe were honored for their remarkable courage during a violent incident on October 22, 2025.

After Sergio was attacked by a homicide suspect, he and his mother, Ana, fought back, subduing the suspect, calling 9-1-1, and holding him until Oswego officers arrived. Their bravery prevented further harm and helped ensure the suspect’s capture. Tragically, the suspect had already taken a life.
