conomic development and stability continues to be strong throughout the Village of Oswego.
The impact of the village’s initiatives to assist businesses and budding entrepreneurs to invest and locate throughout all corners of the village helps to successfully build a stronger community. “We are excited to report that a number of new businesses have already opened this year and quite a few are on the horizon to open in 2027,” says Kevin Leighty, the economic development director for the Village of Oswego.

What’s happening in the downtown area? “We’re continuing to see a lot of positive momentum through the opening of a diversified group of businesses,” notes
Leighty. These include Bay 54, a new upscale cocktail lounge at 57 Main St.; Needle ‘N Groove, a store specializing in selling new and hard-to-find vinyl records, at 17 W. Jefferson St.; The Travel Bug, a travel agency that completed a substantial buildout of the former Denny’s Trains space at 116 S. Main St.; Dunkin at the corner of Route 71 and Plainfield Road; and the completed construction of the 104-unit multi-family residential building north of the existing Reserve at Hudson Crossing mixed-use development. The full-service Ellwood Steak & Fish House is targeted to open by the end of 2026 or early 2027 in the vacant corner space at 180 W. Washington St. within The Reserve at Hudson Crossing building. u Continued on page 4

Billy Bricks Wood Fired Pizza is underway with a substantial buildout across the street from the Oswego Library. This quick service restaurant is expected to complete its renovation work and open by the end of 2026. Wholey Granoly, a breakfast-and-lunch restaurant, is making changes to the former Dairy Barn building and is expected to open by fall 2026. Along Route 34, residents can now enjoy treats at the Cold Stone Creamery in the Oswego Commons shopping center and shop at Cozy Haus Furniture, located in the former Party City space, at the Prairie Market shopping center. Looking ahead on Route 34, the Trader’s Joe’s 12,500-square-foot grocery store is under construction with an anticipated opening across before the end of this year. Leighty adds that in conjunction with this project, the developer Benderson recently completed site work to build a 10,000-square-foot retail center on the same site. HomeGoods is under construction at the Prairie Market East shopping center between PetSmart and Aldi. Dutch Bros. Coffee will construct a new 1,200-squarefoot drive-thru only coffee shop building at the corner of Route 34 and Odgen Falls Blvd. Both have early 2027 anticipated opening dates. Leighty adds that Harrison Street Square is under construction on a mixeduse concept comprised of the conversion of a former industrial building to a new

retail center, small pop-up shops, and community open space at 174 Harrison St. The first phase of the project is currently underway with two committed tenants in Barkville Buddies and TermiNader Fitness and to be completed by end of 2026 or early 2027. “The second phase still requires Village Board approval, so depending on when plans are submitted, it could be started and potentially completed sometime in 2027,” says Leighty. To round out the active developments in Oswego, a new 10,000-square-foot shopping center is under construction at the northeast corner of Orchard Road and Lewis Street with completion in this growing commercial area in late 2026 or early 2027. The spotlight is surely shining bright to keep the downtown area active and supporting new businesses throughout all of Oswego. www.oswegochamber.org

Chamber CEO Letter Welcome to the Fall Newsletter from the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year. I love the colors and the cooler temps, school starting and looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas to spend quality time with family. We have many exciting things happening this fall in the Oswego Chamber. Our annual Fraidycat 5K/8K and Meow Mile will be held on Oct. 25. This is a 16-year standing tradition where runners/walkers come out to race for medals and fun. We are still accepting sponsors for this year’s race and hope to have you join us as a sponsor, runner/walker or volunteer. We just finished up our summer cruise night series where we added three Saturday nights and had a blast. We want these to be a fun, free, family night to come out and look at some cool cars and enjoy the night as a family. Watch for 2027 dates and plans to come.

New events in Oswego Lanterns and Western vibes highlight two inaugural festivals

ince Kelly Bertog assumed his role as events manager for the Village of Oswego last November, he’s been busy solidifying traditional events and working with the village’s Cultural Arts Commission to create new experiences.

Bertog is responsible for planning and managing village-hosted events, supporting marketing and communication efforts and serving
as the liaison to the Cultural Arts Commission. “It’s been an exciting start so far with great opportunities ahead as I settle in this role,” he says. “My wife Marina, our children Penny, 4, Ollie, 1, and I are proud to be residents here, and we’re close to Marina’s parents who live here, too. Oswego has everything from a beautiful downtown and rich history

to all of the amenities any family could hope to enjoy.” Two upcoming events are keeping him busy. The Boots, Bourbon & BBQ Festival takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. at Venue 1012. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the festival. Then, the first-ever Oswego Lantern Parade will launch on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 17. “Join us for this new free Oswego fall tradition,” says Bertog. “It will be an evening of light, creativity and community along the Fox River.” Leading up to this event, residents of all ages are invited to take part in lantern-making workshops throughout the summer and fall. Then, as the sun sets, those handmade lanterns will come together in a glowing community parade from the Oswego Public Library to Hudson Crossing Park, where the Oswegoland Park District will host the
park’s first-ever Night Market. An evening spin on the beloved Country Market, the Night Market will feature live music, drinks, local vendors, food, a live professional pumpkin carving demonstration and a sea of lanterns reflecting off the Fox River. “Don’t miss this unforgettable night of light, riverfront views, music and interactive experiences,” adds Bertog. “We urge residents to register for participation and walking in the parade. It’s free. Take advantage, too, at one of the upcoming workshops to start building your very own lantern. Learn more about the Oswego Lantern Parade on the Village of Oswego Facebook page.” Three lantern workshops have been scheduled. The Oswegoland Park District hosted the first at the Little White School on Aug. 21. The second workshop will take place on Sept. 24 from 6-7 p.m. at

Fall brings football, bonfires, fireplaces, and holiday gatherings, but it also brings seasonal fire hazards. Start by testing your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working properly. As furnaces and other heating equipment begin seeing increased use, consider having your system inspected and serviced by a qualified professional. If you use a fireplace or wood-burning stove, make sure it is properly maintained.

Space heaters should always be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn and should never be left unattended. Enjoying a backyard fire or bonfire? Keep fires a safe distance from structures and combustible materials, never leave them unattended, and always have a way to extinguish the fire nearby. For our local businesses, fall is also a great time to review workplace fire safety. Make sure exits remain clear, fire extinguishers are accessible, emergency lighting is working, and employees know what to do during an emergency. Keeping fire lanes and building access points clear helps firefighters and paramedics reach you quickly when seconds matter. As the holidays approach, remember that candles, decorations, extension cords, and increased cooking can create additional hazards. A little prevention can make a big difference.
