Byron schools go on adaptive pause BYRON – Bryon Community Unit School District 226 announced it will take an adaptive pause starting Wednesday on the advice of the Ogle County Health Department. Building principals were to implement remote learning plans for the next three school days. “Like many local schools, we have experienced a significant uptick in cases over the last week, and with the support and recommendations of the Ogle County Health Department, tried our best to mitigate them,” a statement from the school read on its website. Staff at the school cannot keep up with the increased demands of contact tracing and test-to-stay protocols, the statement read. A call placed to the Ogle County Health Department was met with a recorded dis-

claimer that “all staff are working on COVID-related issues” and that it may take several days to respond. According to updated pandemic data for the 2020-21 school year that was posted on health department website, there have been 167 positive cases, 37 probable cases and 2,188 quarantined cases of students and staff in the school district. There have been 632 students and staff tested, 895 close contacts, 208 close contacts tested and 141 close contacts either positive or probable. Broken down, there have been 126 student positive cases in the district and 41 staff positive cases. Positive cases by school: 41 students at Byron High School, 30 students at Byron Middle School and 55 students at Mary Morgan Elementary School. Taken altogether, Byron’s positive and probable cases for COVID-19 constitute

21.8% of cases at all Ogle County schools. Byron’s extracurricular activities, including those involving the Byron Park District, have been suspended through Dec. 26. In addition, Byron Superintendent Buster Barton announced the passing of Byron Middle School Teacher Jane Jones to parents on Tuesday. “Mrs. Jones has made a lasting impression on many students, staff, and community members during her time in the district,” Barton said. “Her presence will be deeply missed by many in the Byron School District and throughout the Byron community.” Information on the district’s website said buildings will remain open and crisis response support teams will remain available throughout the week from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Oregon council approves property tax levy BY ALEXA ZOELLNER

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Oregon taxpayers will see a decrease on their property tax bills next year. Oregon City Council members on Dec. 14 approved a property tax levy of $728,223.75 for fiscal 2023. Oregon’s fiscal year runs May 1 to April 30. For someone with a $150,000 house, the

city tax rate be $696.92; that’s a decrease of $44.98 from the 2021 tax rate. Oregon’s equalized assessed value – one-third of the value of all property in the city – rose 6.743% to $52,245,879. The tax levy is about 1.394% of the equalized assessed value. There are 11 funds the city allocations tax levy dollars toward. For fiscal 2023, the appropriations are: • General Fund: $173,978.76;

• Police Fund: $91,048.89; • Recreation Fund: $10,025.98; • Coliseum Fund: $39,184.41; • Audit Fund: $18,586.96; • Social Security Fund: $56,368.08; • Band Fund: $3,166.10; • School Crossing Fund: $10,449.18; • Tort, Liability, Probability Insurance Fund: $141,063.87; • Street Lighting Fund: $26,384.17; • IMRF Retirement Fund: $157,967.35.

Due to the recent storm, the Oregon Street Department will be doing a special brush pickup on Monday, Dec. 20. Residents need to make sure to pile the brush correctly at the curb before 7 a.m.

Byron Forest Preserve, Rotary work on sled shed project

Byron Rotary Club seeks donations of new and lightly used snow sleds and snow saucers, which will be stored for the public at the Byron Forest Preserve District’s sledding hill. The sleds can be dropped off at Byron Public Library, 100 S. Washington St. or at the Dickerson Nieman-Floski Law Office Building at 220 W. Third St. The sleds are being stored at a shed that is being constructed with $2,000 worth of building materials provided by Rotary fundraisers and a Rotary Foundation grant. Children and families will be allowed to borrow sleds and saucers at no cost. The shed is being designed and constructed by forest preserve volunteers. It is designed to be portable for off-season storage.

Weinzierl transforms Reno from ‘untouchable’ to spirited barrel racer By ALEXA ZOELLNER

azoellner@shawmedia.com DIXON – Day after day, 14-year-old Molly Weinzierl sat in the sand, a pile of hay on her lap, waiting for the perpetually spooked horse resting nearby to get hungry enough to come over. “He was terrified of men in cowboy hats and damn near untouchable,” said Weinzierl, now 18 and a senior at Dixon High School. She recalled multiples times Reno – an American quarter horse with the scars to prove past mistreatment – became so frightened that he ripped out the hitching post he was tied to and took off toward the nearby road, bringing the roughly 4-foot-long log with him. Weinzierl believes a past owner tried to train Reno to barrel race and beat him in an attempt get him to turn in the proper direction. Aggression and terror are about the worst mixture one can get in a horse, said Weinzierl, who lives in Dixon Township with Sally Cooper in order to care for Reno and her other animals. Cooper is a family friend and is the one who bought Reno for her. It was an unexpected purchase, as Weinzierl had gone with her to the sale barn to look for tact, not a new horse. But the moment she saw Reno, she knew he would be hers. The person selling Reno had pulled him and another horse out of the auction when they didn’t go for a good enough price, Weinzierl said. If she hadn’t bought him, there’s a chance Reno could have gone to slaughter. “I knew that he was going to end up being a good horse, but there was something off about him,” she said. “I knew that there was something kind of deeper going on. And they almost seemed too calm, to a point where we think – I don’t know 100% for sure – but we think that they might have been drugged.” Their behavior changed drastically following a few days of quarantine back at Cooper’s, Weinzierl said. The other horse couldn’t be saddled without bucking and ended up being resold as a bronc, while Reno’s fear and aggression came out. It took several months to earn Reno’s trust, Weinzierl said. But today, she can put the 3-year-old neighbor on Reno and he’ll carry the girl around

As soon as she realized how much she enjoyed the sport, Weinzierl learned everything she could about horses and horseback riding. “It’s a huge passion of mine, and I hope that I can do it for as long as possible,” she said. Weinzierl is part of the Palmyra Hillbillies 4-H group in Lee County, as well as a member of the Ogle County 4-H Horse Drill Team. She joined the drill team with Reno after seeing them in the 2019 Autumn on Parade’s Harvest Time Parade. Lee County doesn’t have a horse drill team, so 4-H’ers from surrounding

Judge denies defense motion in double-murder case OREGON – A motion to quash a search warrant and suppress evidence in the double-murder case against Duane C. Meyer was denied by an Ogle County judge Dec. 6. Meyer, 39, is accused of killing his ex-wife, Maggie Meyer, and their 3-year-old son, Amos, and is in Ogle County Jail on $10 million bond. He is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with the Oct. 9, 2016, house fire in which Maggie, 31, was found dead and their son, Amos, died. Maggie’s body was found on a couch on the first floor, while Amos, whom Duane Meyer pulled from the burning

home and tried to resuscitate on the front lawn, was pronounced dead a short time later at a Rockford hospital. Defense attorney Christopher DeRango had filed the motion to quash a search warrant for Duane Meyer’s cellphone records and suppress any evidence obtained as a result of the search. According to court records, DeRango’s motion for a Franks hearing, in which a judge would decide whether a law enforcement officer knowingly, or with reckless disregard for the truth, used false information to obtain a search warrant, was taken under advisement by Judge John B. Roe. A status hearing has been set for Jan 12 at 1:30 p.m.

The Ogle County 4-H Horse Drill Team is a group of 4-H members ages 8 to 18 who perform “with classic drill team precision while promoting good horse etiquette and riding skills,” according to an informational flyer from the Ogle County Extension office. “It’s like a dance team, but on horses,” Weinzierl said. “It’s definitely something that I was like, ‘What is this?’ But it sounded like so much fun because it does have a speed aspect to it.” The horse drill team didn’t practice or meet up in 2020, so it wasn’t until this year that she got a chance to know her four teammates. They practiced at the Ogle County Fairgrounds and took part in some exhibitions and parades in 2021, but didn’t participate in any competitions, Weinzierl said. “The parades are a totally different ballgame,” she said. “You’re walking through crowds of screaming children, which was definitely a challenge for Reno at first. But now he’s just like, ‘OK, whatever. We’re just going to walk this way. All right, that’s fine.’” Reno, whose registered name is Ebs Little Reno, is just like Sam Elliott’s character in the show “The Ranch,” Weinzierl said. The 16-year-old horse — whose height is 14.1 hands — is like a “burly grandpa” until it’s time to take part in speed events. “Then he gets all excited and acts like a 5-year-old [human],” she said. Both of them are fans of speed, Weinzierl said, so when searching for a riding event in which to take part, that factor was a must. They tried to do mounted shooting,

Oh, yeah, let’s just go do that for fun,” joked Weinzierl, a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie. “It’s definitely an interesting hobby. On top of that, knowing how close Reno and I are now, kind of just our bond and knowing that it’s something that he loves,

that then makes me happy too.” Weinzierl said she looked through some of the videos she has from when she trained Reno to barrel race and the difference between then and now is “night and day.” Because Reno had been abused while being trained to barrel race, there were some bumps in the road, Weinzierl said. However, he trusted her enough by that point to let it happen. “It was really cool to see kind of the flip, the way he kind of turned his gears in his head and he was, ‘Oh, OK, this is kind of cool. She’s kind of cool. We’re going to hang out with her,’” she said. By 2019, they were ready to perform

and compete in rodeos and 4-H fairs. However, the COVID-19 pandemic kept them from doing so. They went to their first barrel race in July, and Reno “did better than I could have ever asked him for,” Weinzierl said. She plans to take part in competitions with Reno next year, although they do have some kinks to work out before then. It doesn’t really matter to her what kind of event they do, Weinzierl said. If Reno chose to do dressage one day, that’s what they’d do, she said. “Whatever makes him happy is kind of where I’m going,” Weinzierl said. “I don’t care what it is. As long as my Bear [Reno’s nickname] is happy, I’m good with that.”

Monica and Joe Miller, of Oregon, plan to take the donations they receive to Princeton, Kentucky, which was among the communities hit by the Dec. 10 tornado that might have traveled more than 200 miles. “We seen this hit and we had friends down that way that had friends that lost family members,” Monica Miller said. “We brought it up at the meeting [of our riding club, Bitch’n Bulldogs] and decided to collect donations for down there.” They have a lot of clothing so far,

Fair association elects officers; honors volunteer of year

The Ogle County Fair Association’s annual meeting was held Nov. 13 at the Ogle County Farm Bureau auditorium. In attendance were 4-H and adult volunteers, Ogle County Fair Association members and board members. The annual meeting is held to review the past year’s fair and to elect new directors to the Ogle County Fair Association’s board. “The weather was great and the attendance at the 2021 fair was excellent,” said Tom Simpson, Fair Association president. Simpson said the 2021 Ogle County Fair was very successful thanks to 4-H club members, FFA members and contributions from individuals and businesses. “All volunteers should be very proud of what you do at the Ogle County fairgrounds to make it look

and function as a top-notch fair,” he said. Lisa Schultz of Oregon was presented the Ogle County Fair Association’s 2021 Volunteer of the Year award. The award is given in recognition of exceptional volunteer work throughout the year at the fairgrounds. Brad Larson, Rosanne Hurst and Chris Carter were reelected for threeyear terms on the Fair Association board. Other continuing board members are Simpson, Brenda Holm, Carol Magnuson, Rita Dauphin, Lyle Hopkins, Daryl Cave, Nathan Magnuson and Dave Engelbrecht. They’ll likely stay through Sunday to help search for people who still are missing. “We’re going to be making more than one trip,” Joe Miller said. “There are people out of town that are coming back that want to send stuff, so we’re going to make another trip.” Items they’re looking to deliver

include: coats, warm clothing, thermals, socks, underwear, shoes, diapers, baby products, feminine products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, shaving cream, body wash, deodorant, Q-tips, hair brushes, combs, bobby pins, bandages, Neosporin, Bactine, water, Gatorade, staple foods, canned goods, nonperishables, packaged snacks, tarps, trash bags, storage totes, brooms, mops and other cleaning items.

Donations can be dropped off at 215 W. Washington St. in Oregon between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. until Dec. 16 and until 3 p.m. on Dec. 17. Aplington House’s upstairs is on the 2022 ‘to-do’ list

he trolley ride was a big success for Polo and I have been interested in it since it arrived. I can look out my front door and see it each day. The first time I thought I was seeing things since it is not every day you look out your door and there is a trolley as big as life a block away. It was very nice that we were able to use the trolley for our Polo Christmas Celebration. I had all the places on the national register written up for Polo a couple of years ago and it did not take long to pull them up on the computer. I highlighted the important facts and added some other places of interest. Mike Faivre and Beth Wiegmann gave the information on the trolley since I knew my voice would not hold out to do such a thing. I was correct since we had three trolleys full of people and each trolley held 40 people.

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf I stayed back along with Paula Faivre and we visited with people in the museum. We decided at the last minute to add Aplington House and Ted Boddiger took care of that. I was sorry we did not decorate Aplington House for the holidays because it was always fun to wrap the stair banister in lighted greenery and put up a tree. I used to be able to do things at the last minute but those days are gone and with my knee, I am just barely able to do what is necessary. Ted said we had 30 to 40 people at

Aplington House and many of them are now the younger people. Most of them had never been to either of the museums. It was nice to see all of them that afternoon and they are all amazed at what Polo has to offer. The back room upstairs at Aplington House does not have electricity. You have to plug in a drop cord with a bulb at the end. This happens to be the room that has all the children’s things and Ted said the people found that most interesting. This room has a perfect piece of linoleum on the floor and it looks like a rug. People today do not know about linoleum especially the young ones. This room needs electricity and all the children’s things probably need to be moved to the center room. There is work that needs to be done up there. When we finish with all the Native American projects, we need to address

the upstairs of Aplington House. By then I hope to have my knee redone so I can hasten up and down the steps. With the museum, there is always something that needs to be done. We do not run out of projects. This week Charlie, Linda and I gathered at Aplington House and went through Christmas ornaments from the basement. We kept the Shiny Brite ornaments for a tree at Aplington House for next year. We took a tote of California ornaments to the other museum that went with the white tree my brother had sent from California a number of years ago. You will have to wait until next year to see them again. They are most unusual in very bright California colors.

LEAF RIVER – More than 120 people enjoyed a breakfast with Santa in Leaf River last Saturday “We were very pleased with the turnout,” said Laura Werner, Leaf River Lions Club president. “We didn’t know what kind of response we’d get. We were glad the community came and enjoyed it with us.” The Lions Club hosted the event, which was held at the Bertolet Memorial building between 7 and 10 a.m. on Dec. 11. Breakfast included pancakes, waffles, French toast, scrambled eggs, whole hog sausage, applesauce, orange juice, milk and coffee. Santa Claus arrived around 9 a.m. to meet with children, hear wish lists and take pictures. Werner estimated about 28 children visited with Santa. “In a small community, a lot of the kids you see each year,” Werner said. “It’s interesting to see [them visit

Santa]. You see them as babies and they’re OK, then they become toddlers and they cry. But for the most part, the kids enjoyed talking to Santa.” Children also were able to decorate picture frames to hold their photos of them and Santa, she said. Normally, the Lions Club offered cookie decorating, but they switched this year. It was a change kids seemed to enjoy, Werner said. The Leaf River Lions Club has been doing breakfasts with Santa and with the Easter bunny for years, she said. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they haven’t been able to do those or their monthly breakfasts, Werner said. “We just were really glad to be able to serve the community again,” she said. “We had a good response with Halloween, so we did the Santa breakfast. We’re not ready to do the monthly breakfast, but we’re looking to do Easter. We’re glad to be back.” The Leaf River Busy Beavers 4-H group assisted in putting on the event, Werner said. Funds raised from the breakfast will go toward Lions’ projects and Leaf River Days, she said.

treynolds@shawmedia.com STERLING – Closer to full strength and at home for the first time this season, the Newman boys basketball team wreaked havoc with aggressive pressure defense in a 72-56 win over Polo on Dec. 13. The Comets (3-3) used a combination of their stingy trapping 1-3-1 zone and tight man-to-man half-court defenses to force the Marcos (4-4) out of sync. In the first half alone, Newman forced 21 Polo turnovers – 18 came on steals – and turned them into either fast-break layups or quick baskets in its half-court offense. “Energy was not the problem tonight, even in the first half,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “It was just turning the ball over where they could

get run-outs. In fact, I thought our half-court defense – when we could set it – was not bad. But they got so many run-outs from their defense getting traps, getting deflections, getting steals.” Polo started fast, as Tyler Merdian’s 3-pointer capped an opening 7-0 run. Newman tied it 9-9 on a pair of run-out layups from Batten and Alex Wigginton, then took the lead on a Jacob Donald basket in the paint. Merdian answered with another 3, then the Comets got another fastbreak layup from Donald and a strong drive to the basket by Nolan Britt to lead 15-12 after the opening quarter. Tyler Merdian hit a deep 3 to open the second, but Owen McBride scored inside and Batten nailed a 3 for Newman. Carter Merdian converted a

Green Bay experience is too over the top for me A

t 6:30 p.m. this Friday, the championship game of the Forreston boys basketball tournament was to be held. Unfortunately, every single game (32) leading up to that was also wiped out due to Forreston High School in an adaptive pause or period of remote learning from Dec. 7-17. That was the message those of us in the media received from Cardinal athletic director Kyle Zick, only one day after we received the seedings for the tournament. For the record, Pecatonica was a surprise No. 1 seed, ahead of the usual suspects Winnebago (2), Sterling Newman (3), Aquin (4), Eastland (5) and Byron (6). No 7-16 were Le-Win, Orangeville, Forreston, Stockton, Dakota, Polo, Milledgeville, River Ridge, Oregon and Pearl City. Though the tourney wasn’t played, as least we got a feel for where teams stack up. Touted as one of the oldest in the state, the 61st Annual Forreston Holiday Tournament is a model of stability and not just for its longevity. With such a drawing power to it, the same 16 teams come year after year. Let’s compare Forreston to the state’s longest-consecutive running tournament – the DeKalb Holiday Classic, which has been around since 1926. The DeKalb event has a constant turnover of teams, with nowhere close

to the stability of Forreston. How about Princeville, which has hosted an event since 1927? With only eight teams, it is a ho-hum affair lacking in quality. Yes, Forreston holds it own among tournaments in Illinois. Even though Forreston and Milledgeville had to drop out of the Polo girls tournament, a truncated version with six teams was held this week. The NUIC girls race appears to be more wide open than usual, with traditional powers not being as strong. It’s been about 40 years since I last attended an NFL game. To be frank, I have not had the desire to do so because of ticket prices, parking, travel and lack of comfort sitting in a stadium compared with at home. Given the choice between the Super Bowl and a top-notch high school playoff game among local teams, give me the high schoolers. However, I’ve always desired to see a game at Lambeau Field and that is what happened on Sunday night when the Bears and Packers played. A friend had an extra ticket and invited me along.

Intrigued to experience Green Bay home football, of course, I said yes. Spending game day in Packerland is purported to be unlike any other in the league. Though I only had Soldiers Field to compare it with, I believe what takes place at Lambeau is indeed like no other NFL environment. For one thing, the stadium is in a residential neighborhood, somewhat akin to Wrigley Field. It was quite a sight to see homeowners open up their lawns for parking, at prices ranging from $30-40, depending on distance from Lambeau. For that price, at least a car owner also gets a spot to tailgate and use of an indoor bathroom. Some of those yards were really torn up, but the monies pocketed more than make up the cost of sod repair. We opted to take a shuttle bus from a shopping center parking lot a few miles away. A pain, yes, but it didn’t cost a cent and allowed us to escape the traffic gridlock of 80,000 people trying to drive away after the game. Unlike larger metropolitans, Green Bay isn’t built for this. But that part of the charm of a small town afforded a professional franchise. Fans have come to accept this and are seemingly content to extend their tailgating until traffic dies down. It is more than a game in Green Bay. It is one big party.

Credit to Packer fans for living up to their reputation as the most friendly in the league. They welcomed Bears fans, with nary an animosity to be found. Perhaps that is a by-product of small town living or Wisconsin people in general. Ultimately, they love their Pack and might be as devoted as any fandom in the NFL. Considering how much this country idolizes football, that’s a major statement. Maybe if I walked among the hardcore Cowboy, Steeler or Seahawk devotees, I might feel different. Inside the stadium, I felt a bit claustrophobic. It’s old-school bleacher seating and it is very tight. Maybe it is the curmudgeon in me, but visions of my spacious living room and padded couch danced in my head anytime the never-ending TV timeouts occurred. Lots of drinking takes place and whenever the Packers scored, highfives and back-slapping was the order of business for anyone sitting near you, be it complete strangers of not. As a non-drinker and non-Packer backer, I just went along with the exercise with fellow seat mates. My final assessment is this: Glad to do Lambeau Field in all its glory on a favorable December weather night. Once is enough, though. I like football, but what happens in Green Bay is too over the top for me.

12 SPORTS ROUNDUP Wrestling Hawks lose three The Hawk wrestlers, with a juggled lineup and a juggled schedule, took three big losses at home last week. Oregon went down 55-12 to second-ranked Lena-Winslow-Stockton and lost 60-24 to Class 2A Rochelle in the High School Gym on Dec. 7, and they got roughed up 45-19 by Rockridge in the Blackhawk Center on Dec. 9, dropping their season record to 3-4. Oregon started strong against Lena with a win at 33 seconds by Lane Halvorson and a 6-4 win by Seth Stevens at 138, but the Pantherhawks cranked it up with seven pins, five in under 30 seconds, two forfeits, a major decision, and a decision in the remaining 11 matches. Jared Glendenning, Zander VandeSand, Landen Elder, Seth Rote, Briggs Sellers and Ethan Mowry were the victims of the pins. Andrew Young lost 11-3 in the 220-pound match, and Gabe Eckerd gave fourth-ranked Marey Roby a run at 160, but came up short in the third period, losing 6-4. Preston LeBay won 4-1 in the 120-pound match. Stevens opened it up with a stack in 49 seconds against Rochelle. Jackson Glendenning and VandeSand lost by falls before Eckerd pinned with a half nelson. Austin Peterson and Elder went down to first-period pins. Young reversed into a half nelson at 3:12 in the 195-pound match. Rochelle won three by forfeits and Sellers, LeBay and Mowry all went down to first-minute pins. The meet ended with Halvorson hooking up a double chicken wing in 55 seconds. Recycle those holiday lights at several locations in county

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) is again partnering with local fire departments and villages to offer several convenient drop-off boxes so those frustrating, nonfunctional holiday light strands can be recycled. Drop-off boxes are available at the following fire departments: Rochelle, Byron, Stillman Valley and Mt. Morris.

The boxes also will be located at the village halls in Polo, Forreston, Davis Junction and Creston. Light strands also are accepted at the Ogle County courthouse and at the OCSWMD office at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. Boxes will remain at these locations until Jan. 21, 2022. Accepted light strands include Italian mini-lights, traditional lights, LED

lights and other holiday light strands. Extension cords also are accepted. Material not accepted includes rope lights, wreaths, garland, metal stakes or silhouettes, live greens, plastic decorations, timers and light packaging, plastic bags or cardboard boxes. Placing just the light strands and cords into the bins increases material value and makes the recycling process

more efficient for the processor. Lights and cords will be shipped to Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations in Onalaska, Wisconsin, to be recycled. In 2020-2021, more than 1,500 pounds of material were collected and recycled through this program.

He and his wife, Barb, were active members of the Blackhawk Twirlers Square Dance Club for 25 years. Predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Barbara; son, Scott; grandson, Jim Pearson; granddaughter, Amanda Heimstead; and daughter-in-law, Diane Barnes. Survived by his son, Jim Barnes; daughters, Virginia (Robert) Pearson and Penny (William) Stoughton; grandchildren: Lisa Albee, Dan Pearson, Tim Barnes, Dustin Heimstead, Benjamin Heimstead, Ethan Heimstead, Cameron Heimstead and Wyatt Heimstead; and 13 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life for Jim will be held at a later date. In lie of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, assisted the family.

At Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, she served as the director of nurses and was an OB nurse. Her hobbies were being a piano player and teacher, brailing books for the blind and bowling. Her best friend and godmother to her children is Bernadyne Messer Snook. They grew up across the street from each other on Hitt Street in Mt.Morris. (Lots of funny stories there). Marlene is survived by her two daughters, Lisa O’Neal of Denver, CO, and Julie Riemer of Osceola, WI; son-in-law Jon Riemer; four grandchildren, Danielle, Riley, Thor and Cole; and two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh and Ryder. Marlene felt blessed by God for her family,cousins, friends and all she had on this world. She will be missed.

OREGON – James L. “Jim” Barnes, 93, longtime Oregon resident, died Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Swedish-American Hospital, Rockford following a short illness. Born October 13, 1928 in Decatur, IL the son of Roy and Lela (Duncan) Barnes. On March 21, 1947 he married Barbara J. Taft in Decatur. Together they owned and operated Bill’s Shoe Service in Oregon for 30 years until their retirement. Jim was active in his community and served on many committees and projects for the betterment of his community, He served his city of Oregon for 28 years – City Council from 1975 to 1978, Mayor from 1978 to 1999, and again City Council from 2015 to 2019. He was on

Born: September 13, 1938 in Oak Park, IL Died: December 7, 2021 in Mt. Morris, IL Joanne Marie Marcan Juriga was born on September 13, 1938 in Oak Park, Illinois. She passed away on December 7, 2021 at her home in Mt. Morris, IL. She was married to Thomas James Juriga on June 15, 1960 in Berwyn, Illinois. They raised their family in Wheaton, IL and then moved to Mount Morris in 1990. Joanne was an active member of her local church, Saint James Lutheran Church and had a lifetime of service in local community organizations in both DuPage and Ogle County. She is survived by her three children, Stephen (Alexandra) Juriga DVM of Aurora, IL, James (Denise) Juriga DVM of Batavia, IL,

Jill Wright of Thomson, IL; her sister, Karen Quinlan; and grandchildren Kayleigh (Sam) Brzezinski DVM, Jake (Amy) Juriga, Nadia (Adriel) Medina, Lindsay Juriga, Kimberly (Collin) O’Neal, Grace Juriga, Alex Juriga, Luke Juriga, and Elle Juriga. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas James Juriga and her parents, Joseph and Anna Marcan. Those who knew Joanne knew that she always said what was on her mind and was a gifted conversationist. When she wasn’t gardening she could be found sewing or knitting inside. Homemade gifts were her specialty. She was very active in her children and grandchildren’s lives and always kept the family connected. She will be greatly missed. A celebration of life will be held at Joanne’s home in Mt. Morris from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 18th with the memorial service taking place at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Saint James Lutheran Church of Forreston, Illinois.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Dec. 6 Mika Walley, 27, of Union City, Tennessee, was arrested for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39, mile marker 102, at approximately 9:53 p.m. Walley was given an I-Bond with a return court date and released on-scene. Dec. 7 Donald Duarte, 58, of Forreston, was arrested at 9:17 p.m. in the 15000 block of West Harper Road for driving on a revoked driver’s license. Duarte was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Deputies and Oregon EMS responded to the 3500 block of South Ridge Road at 11:13 p.m. for a single-vehicle crash with injuries. An investigation showed Mia A. Hoese, 17, of Oregon, was driving a Mini Cooper north on South Ridge Road when she drove off the west side of the road, striking a property fence and utility pole. Oregon EMS transport-

ed Hoese to KSB Hospital for minor injuries. An investigation is pending. Dec. 8 Rhiannon Waters, 39, of Rochelle, was arrested for disorderly conduct after deputies responded to a disturbance in the 5000 block of South Mill Pond Road at 12:39 a.m. Waters was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Deputies and Oregon Fire/EMS responded to a one-vehicle crash in the 3400 block of Illinois Route 2 at approximately 7:15 a.m. An investigation showed that a GMC Sierra driven by Robert Baker, 46, of Byron, was southbound when Baker traveled off the roadway and struck a stone hillside. The vehicle then crossed the roadway and struck a hillside on the opposite side, coming to a rest in the northbound lane. Oregon EMS transported Baker to an area hospital for minor injuries. No citations were issued. At approximately 8:20 a.m., deputies

responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 6500 block of North Freeport Road. An investigation showed that a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Derreck Vince, 21, of Freeport, crossed the center line, swiping a 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup driven by Vernon Dixon, 83, of Dixon. Vince was issued a citation for improper lane use. Both vehicles were driven from the scene and no injuries were suffered by either driver. Dec. 9 Madison Hintz, 19, of Freeport, was arrested for driving with no valid license after being stopped on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64 for speeding. Hintz was released on an I-Bond. Dec. 10 Deputies and Byron Fire and EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash at Illinois Route 72 and North Marrill Road at approximately 2:45 p.m. An investigation showed a Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old female, of

Davis Junction, was westbound on Route 72 when the driver failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of a Nissan Maxima driven by a 16-year-old female, of Byron, traveling in the same direction. Byron EMS transported the 16-year-old to SwedishAmerican Hospital for minor injuries. The 17-year-old was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Dec. 11 John Green, 41, of Forreston, was arrested at 8:37 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop near the intersection of Mill Road and Illinois Route 72. Green also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Green was released on an I-Bond. Logan Marshall, 23, of Janseville, Wisconsin, was arrested at 11:31 p.m. for driving while license suspended in the 17000 block of Illinois Route 64. Marshall also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and an equipment violation. Marshall was given an I-Bond with a return court date and released on-scene.

Dec. 6 At 9:07 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 900 block of Madison Street resulting in the arrest of Alyssa N. Ghibellini, 28, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Ghibellini was transported to the Ogle County Jail. Dec. 9 Diane L. Harrod, 53, of Byron, was arrested at 4:47 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while revoked. Harrod

was transported to the Ogle County Jail. Michael R. Guzman, 36, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:23 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Guzman was also issued citations for improper lane use and illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver. Guzman was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred near the intersection of Fifth and Gale Streets. Dec. 10 Devon J. Canada, 27, of Oregon, was arrested at 3:47 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for aggravated domestic battery. Canada was transported to the Ogle

Memories shared at funeral for fallen firefighter Garrett Ramos remembered for his leadership, strength of character and impish humor during funeral services BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com

STERLING – Unabashed grief. Laughter through tears. Clapping through tears. Praise and prayers and thanks and farewells. As with the visitation the night before, more than a thousand people attended the Dec. 9 funeral for Capt. Garrett Ramos, held six days after the Sterling firefighter died in the line of duty. Building 3 at Garrett Ramos Westwood Sports Complex was filled to near capacity, with people seated in the bleachers and in plastic chairs set up on the courts. Firefighters and first responders in their dress uniforms were seated throughout, while those without seats lined the second-floor balcony, hats set just so, white-gloved hands folded and resting on the railing, shoes polished so glassy that they sent the florescent light from above ricocheting away. Ramos’ wife, Brittney, sat in the front row reserved for family, gently rocking little 2-year-old Kepa, in her dusty lilac dress and white tights, with Ruthie, nearly 4, in a chair by her side, clutching a small stuffed animal. His wide, warm smile and impish sense of humor, the strength of character that guided his calm and steady leadership, the magnetic kindness that drew people to him, his love of his family, his brotherhood, his community – these were the themes shared by speaker after speaker. “If you met Garrett, you loved Garrett,” his family wrote in his obituary. The Rev. James R. Keenan, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, opened the service with praise and prayers for Ramos, who attended St. Mary School as a child. “We come together to celebrate a life. A good life. A life of love, service, and sacrifice,” Keenan said. “He loved life. He loved the people he encountered, the people he met, the people he served And he loved life. And he was willing to offer his life for others in need, and he has shown us that love through sacrifice, as others

There was a ceremony in which the flag was presented to the Ramos family. have done before him, and unfortunately, others will do in the future.” He thanked the firefighters, police and EMTs for keeping their communities safe, and vowed to pray “for all here present, so many and so numerous from across the city, state and country that they cannot all be named.” Chief Michael Dettman spoke of Ramos’ knowledge and skill as a firefighter, and how, as a new chief, he “relied heavily on Garrett to be his voice of reason.” His loss leaves “a tremendous void.” There was only one person with the talent to take over as the next chief, and that was Ramos, respected as a leader by all in the department, Dettman said. “Rest easy, my brother, my friend, my confidant. As a department and as your extended family, we will not forget what you gave each of us, and how you touched our lives.” Sterling firefighter Kurt Landis worked with Ramos for seven years. “Garrett’s always been one to put others first. … He also had the most contagious laugh of anyone I have ever been around.” Garrett, “or G, as most of us called him, always was striving to make his

firefighters better, and always with constructive criticism, never with anger,” Landis said. His men went out of their way to train with him. “The people skills he had were unmatched,” Landis said. “Everyone needs a Garrett in their life.” Often, after responding to a fire, or just cooking a good meal for his crew, he would clap to show his approval, Landis said, asking the mourners to stand join him in one last clap. Santo Scavuzzo, a friend of 17 years, brought on the laughter with tales of the spontaneous escapades the two would have in Ramos’ purple pickup truck, aka Barney, or dancing in a club, or just hanging out: His not-sosecret weakness for Kelly Clarkson songs; a spontaneous dance party on Barney’s hood one night when a favorite song came on the radio; their matching lightning-bolt tattoos: “Sorry, Brittney, couldn’t tell you why.” “He was so freaking fun like that.” His father, Ed Ramos, a retired firefighter, thanked the community for its support, “Garrett’s light burned so brightly for his family, his friends, his fellow firemen, and the members of our com-

munity ... we are so proud of his accomplishments, as a husband, a father, uncle and son. Garrett was our rock. He was loving, caring, soft-spoken, humble, and a natural-born leader with a great sense of humor. “He was loved so much by so many people. “Be like Garrett.” Ramos’ sister, Jennifer Brannon, talked of what an amazing brother and uncle Garrett was. “The bottom line is, Garrett was a person that one should desire to emulate. “He truly epitomized what it means to be a man.” Brittney Ramos, her girls by her side, read a letter she wrote to Ruthie after she was born. In it, she spoke of her husband’s strength and kindness, his patience and thoughtfulness. “I want you to know how great your dad is ... He truly is the best person I’ve ever met.” The day before he died, Garrett texted Brittney, to tell her how happy he was he didn’t have overtime, so he could be home and spend time with them. He told her he loved her. Don’t settle for anything less, she said to Ruthie and Kepa.

“Find someone like your daddy,” she said to his beloved daughters. “Find someone like your daddy.” Fire Chaplain Roger Carlson, who had known Ramos since childhood and who coached him on the soccer field, was the last to speak. “Hero is a term that is overused in our day and time, yet hero is not a strong enough word for Garrett Ramos. “Heroes love their families. Heroes love their communities. Heroes love those around them. Heroes show respect to people, no matter what, and Garrett was all those things, and much more. “He was an amazing man. The best.” Ramos, 38, died fighting a fire that broke out about midnight on Dec. 3 in a home at 10031 Ridge Road in rural Rock Falls, when the floor gave out and he fell into the basement. He is the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in the department’s history. An exact cause of death is pending. The Sterling native, who was with the department since 2012, was posthumously promoted to captain, and union Local 2031, of which he was president, has set up a fund for Brittney and the girls. Polo grower and livestock producer reelected vice president for Illinois Farm Bureau

CHICAGO – Brian Duncan of Polo was reelected vice president of the Illinois Farm Bureau during the organization’s annual meeting in Chicago on Dec. 4-7. Duncan was elected to a two-year term as IFB vice president. Duncan has served as IFB vice president for the past four years and previously served as the Ogle County Farm Bureau president. He also previously served on the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Swine Advisory Committee, National Pork Producers Council Price Discovery Task Force and Ogle County Pork Producers board of directors. “From the bottom of my heart, it is my privilege to serve as vice president of Illinois Farm Bureau,” Duncan said in a news release. “I do not take lightly your trust in me to help shepherd this organization forward and to uphold our policy. I never forget that it is my job to serve you, the member, and I look forward to going above and beyond as much as possible in the next two years. join through their county Farm Bureau. IFB has a total membership of more than 372,326 and a voting membership of 77,462. IFB represents three out of four Illinois farmers. The IFB also reelected Randolph County’s Richard Guebert Jr. for another two-year term as president.
