Homes, offices evacuated after gas line hit By ALEXA ZOELLNER

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – About 10 homes and the Oregon Community Unit School District offices were evacuated Tuesday morning after a gas line was hit in the 900 block of Jefferson Street. “They’re replacing water mains [and] one of the contractors hit a gas line,” Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said. The gas line was hit around 8:30 a.m. and took about two hours to fix, he said. Oregon police, Oregon Fire Protection District and Nicor Gas personnel responded. At 8:27 a.m., school officials posted this on Facebook: “A local response team will be at the corner of 10th and Jefferson investigating a possible gas leak. Hawk Drive is closed at this time. If needing to access Oregon Elementary School, park in the West Parking lot of Park West and walk over.” The 900 block of Jefferson Street was evacuated, along with the 100 block of South 10th Street and part of the 200 block of South 10th Street, Melville said. Oregon looks at seeking ‘Tree City’ recognition By ALEXA ZOELLNER

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Oregon City Council commissioners on Tuesday heard about plans to potentially expedite the city’s goal to become a “Tree City USA.” The city is seeking grants to get an updated tree inventory — the most recent one was done in 1989 — and becoming a Tree City USA would open up some possibilities, City Administrator Darin DeHaan said.

“I think it was kind of always in the vision for the city to move this way,” DeHaan said, noting that becoming a Tree City USA is mentioned several times in Oregon’s capital improvement plan. Tree City USA is one of the Arbor Day Foundation’s oldest programs, according to ArborDay.org. It provides communities with a framework to maintain and grow their tree cover. There are four standards required to gain Tree City USA recognition: • Maintain a tree board or department;

•Have a community tree ordinance; • Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry; • Celebrate Arbor Day. DeHaan presented the council with a tree ordinance for their review on Tuesday. It was a first reading of the ordinance, and thus no action was taken. “The requirements for how much you spend on trees in the city, we already exceed that with our existing tree replacement plan,” Mayor Ken Williams said. “The work is pretty well done.”

azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS — It all began with a simple assignment in 1951 in two very distant seventh grade classrooms: write a letter to a pen pal. One classroom was that of Mrs. Mamie Knodle at Mt. Morris Elementary School, where Sylvia Saunders was a student. The other was in Cullompton, England, where Yvonne Clifford attended school. Sylvia and Yvonne were paired, and the then-11-year-olds began a correspondence. “She liked to write letters, and so did I,” Sylvia said. “So it wasn’t an effort at all, because we enjoy doing that.” It’s been 70 years, and the two women still write to each other. “Yes, it’s amazing isn’t it?” said Yvonne, who now lives in Babbacombe, England. “And when we meet, we still have a good laugh. It’s like we’ve not really been apart, yet there’s always a few years in between. But no, we just have a good time.” Everyone in Knodle’s class had to

write to a pen pal, Sylvia said. Boys were paired with boys, and girls with girls. “The boys, I think it was a real struggle [to write],” she said. “They probably wrote one letter and thought, ‘Forget it.’ Some of the girls wrote a little longer.” Sylvia recalled that one classmate wrote several letters, but gave up when they never got a response. Another’s pen pal always asked for things. “Yvonne and I, we just kind of had the same interests, and so that’s kind of why we were able to continue,” Sylvia said. They share a similar sense of humor, in addition to their love of reading and traveling. “I didn’t get married, so I wasn’t bogged down with a family life, which Sylvia was, and we still kept in touch because once you’ve got me, you can’t get rid of me,” Yvonne said, laughing. “She couldn’t shake me off.” The first time Sylvia and Yvonne met in person was in 1971, 20 years into

Continued from page 3 their friendship. Yvonne traveled to the U.S. — a visit that didn’t start off so well, she said. Having missed her connecting flight from New York to Chicago, she didn’t at O’Hare International Airport until around 3 a.m. There, Yvonne was greeted by Sylvia, her husband, Dave Saunders, and their three children. “And Sylvia, I told her not to come and meet me but she did come — with Dave and the children,” Yvonne recalled. “So they were all asleep on a great big mattress, and we drove back and I fell into bed. When I woke up the next morning, that was my first day in Mt. Morris.” “Although weary and sleep-deprived, there was much chatting and conversation on the ride back to Mt. Morris,” Sylvia said. Yvonne has visited the U.S. at least four times; Sylvia has traveled to England about the same. “It’s been very nice, all my trips to the states,” Yvonne said. “There’s no more. I can’t afford the insurance now, I don’t think. I think that’s the end of that.” “I’m sorry to hear that,” Sylvia replied. “I don’t want to fly anymore, anyway,” Yvonne continued. “I’m fed up

with flying. It’s so far — 11 hours is a long way. … And the insurance just goes up and up and when you’re over 80, it’s as expensive as the airfare. “So we shall just have to converse by telephone and email and letter,” she told Sylvia in a matter-of-fact tone. “And we do,” Sylvia said, nodding. Sylvia said she hasn’t been great about saving Yvonne’s letters and that she “should do better.” Yvonne, on the other hand, still has some of Sylvia’s letters from the 1950s. She also has many of the pictures mailed to her over the years, as well as an invitation to Sylvia’s wedding. “I’m a hoarder,” Yvonne joked. Half-hour phone calls and the occasional email have entered the picture, but they still write letters every other month or so, Sylvia said. They’ll discuss American politics and the British monarchy, their daily lives and little trips they take, what their families are up to and how they’re doing overall, she said. “I talk a lot, and Sylvia listens. I like that,” Yvonne said with a laugh. “I talk rather a lot, and Sylvia’s a very good listener, and then we have a giggle.” Sylvia agreed. “I think [I enjoy] that it’s been consistent,” she said of hers and Yvonne’s friendship. “I know, if I write to Yvonne, soon, she’ll write back. We keep up with each other. I think it’s just knowing each other and the good times we’ve had.”

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — Richard “Dick” Gibbs died Jan. 9, 1981, but his devotion to building a better community remains in the form of Polo’s pool and parks. Gibbs was posthumously selected as Citizen of the Year during the Polo Chamber of Commerce’s 54th annual dinner and meeting. The event took place at The Polo Room on Sept. 27. “I want to thank you all,” said Marty Gibbs who accepted the award in his father’s stead. “This is quite an honor for my father. I don’t really have a speech made, but it’s really nice to be part of him. It really is. “I’m overwhelmed with this, and I wish he was here to have it in his hands,” he continued. “I thank you all for this honor.”

Marty said the Polo pool is named in honor of his father and that there’s a plaque saying such. “But nobody calls it that,” he said. “That’s OK.”

Continued from page 5 “We had a ploy to get him here, and it worked really good until he got sick,” said Tamela Merdian, Polo Chamber of Commerce president. “This particular individual is most notably known for the Town and Country Days Committee,” Merdian said. “Each year, the Town and Country Days Committee is comprised of only a handful of members that are tasked with putting on such a large event for our community. And when there’s no enough volunteers to fill all the duties, this person

steps up to the plate and always takes on the extra work. “This was most recognized during the 2021 festival when the committee was made up of only four people,” she said. Kochsmeier on Tuesday said he was honored and surprised to be nominated. “When I was a kid, my family didn’t have much, so the community really stepped up and made sure me and my siblings had everything we needed,” Kochsmeier said. When the carnival or circus was in town, someone always provided tickets so they could attend, he said.

“I think volunteering as a kid was my way of getting out of my house and experiencing more than the four walls we lived in,” Kochsmeier said. “I’ve always been involved in different things, so it’s kind of prepared me to do what I do today.” Also during the dinner and meeting, the Polo Chamber of Commerce recognized three businesses for milestone anniversaries. The Polo Room, owned by Steve Frano, celebrated its 20th anniversary Dec. 31, 2019. The radio station WLLT 94.3 FM celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019. Scholl Insurance Agency celebrated its 115th anniversary this year.

e have been very busy at the museum. On Oct. 6, at 7 p.m., we have our first meeting since we have been closed with the virus. Our program will be Dick Volker who was a long time employer of the Coca-Cola Company. He will fill us in on how it all got started when a pharmacist put together a concoction for a baby with colic. We will learn about the history of this famous beverage. Maybe we need to have some Coke on hand for our fellowship following the program. So remember the first Wednesday in October at 7 p.m. We also have some other interesting things to show you that came from the Blough Family. Over Labor Day weekend several of us gathered at the museum with Ann and Eric Gaertner from Glen Ellyn. The museum is to be getting her father’s collection of Native

American artifacts. Dale Blough had been finding arrow heads on his property for many years and eventually that collection will be coming in to the museum. We have been getting ready for it. First we received a display case from the Knie Family and another display case from Ed and Karen Olsen. Those have been moved in. The interesting thing about the beautiful display case from the Olsen’s is that it at one time held all the Native American collection of Mr. Schryver. When Fanny Schryver sold the house all the collection of her husband went to the Polo Library. The library placed it on shelves in a

small room at the back of the library and it remained there for many years. I remember going as a school child to see this collection. = It eventually came to the museum and Ed Olsen and Merle McCaffery built new cases to hold this collection. They are still very lovely. Recently when we learned of Dale’s collection coming to the museum, we had to start getting ready. The Knie case was placed in the front of our museum and Ed and Karen Olsen’s original Schryver case slid in nicely into our artifact room. We are pleased that they donated that case to us. We are somewhat ready. How will we approach this new collection? The Schryver collection was purchased in many different states and tells a story all of its own. The Blough collection was found all in one place and tells a different story. It says, a Native American village of thou-

sands of years ago. How many of us can even think of thousands of years ago? I can remember when we had a tour of our museum one year and Joe Bleistein was stationed in the Native American room. Someone asked him, “Are these artifacts about 200 years old?” Joe answered him, “Think 3,000 years old.” The man I believe was rather startled since none of us can think in terms of thousands of years ago. So recently I sat in my kitchen talking to Tim O’Connor who is very interested in all of this. I told him I must start thinking Native American villages. He told me I must first find all the Native American villages in Ogle County! That seemed like a pretty tall order but that is exactly what we are doing.

After weeks of dry weather, it rained on Oregon’s homecoming football game Sept 17. Rockford Lutheran also rained on the parade with a 13-7 win over the Hawks. It was an uphill battle all night for Oregon with Lutheran’s defense making a dominating stand. The Hawks only managed 28 yards rushing on 22 attempts and 12 yards passing. “We couldn’t get rolling on first down,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said. “They were stronger and quicker.” Oregon’s defense did stuff Lutheran on fourth down on the first possession of the game and got the ball at midfield. Things went downhill after that. A 3-and-out by Oregon led to the first of six straight punts, all without making a first down. It wasn’t until Isaac Reber caught a 15 yard pass from Hunter Buchanan with less than 3 minutes in the game that Oregon got its only first down. Early in the second quarter, Lutheran took a 7-0 lead on a 19-yard

touchdown pass from Skylar Wolf to Kyng Hughes. Reber got Hawk fans to their feet on the next possession with a 40 yard run, only to see it nullified by a holding penalty. Daniel Dominguez got the ball back with a fumble recovery at the 17-yard line after Lutheran appeared on their way for a scoring drive. With bowling ball-like running back Jamyr Pitts carrying would-be tacklers, the Crusaders went on a another potential scoring drive, with the Hawk defense finally stiffening up inside the 10-yard line. With seconds remaining in the half, a field goal attempt by Alex Bernert hit the upright and the score remained 7-0, though Lutheran had complied 170 yards rushing. “They ran the same power play over and over on us,” Schneiderman said. The two teams traded punts in the third quarter, with Oregon getting pinned at the 1-yard line as the fourth quarter began. Taking advantage of a short field after a Dominguez punt, Wolf scored

treynolds@shawmedia.com POPLAR GROVE – After months of hot, dry weather, the players at the Big Northern Conference girls golf meet experienced much different conditions Spet. 22 at Timber Pointe. But the locals fared well – very well, in fact: Dixon sophomore Katie Drew was medalist with a 78, Rock Falls sophomore Megan Fiorini was runner-up with a 79, and the Rockets won the team title by 28 shots over Stillman Valley and 30 over Oregon. “There was a lot of wind today, which I wasn’t expecting, but everybody had to play in it, so I’m just lucky to come out how I did,” said Drew after claiming her first conference tournament title. “My goal was top three, then I said I’d be OK with top five. Obviously coming out with the win feels pretty good.” Rock Falls, which went undefeated during the regular season, had three players finish in the top 10: Fiorini was second, senior Ellie Wasson placed sixth with a 91, and senior Taylor Brown took 10th with a 94. Drew, who finished seventh last

SPORTS ROUNDUP Football Forreston 52, Galena 20: The Cardinals picked up a road win behind 107 rushing yards on six carries from Matthew Beltran, and 80 rushing yards on 11 carries from Kaleb Sanders. As a team, the Cardinals gained 311 yards on the ground. Rock Falls was eyeing the team title after taking second a year ago. Fiorini was second in 2020, and matched that feat despite not playing her best round of the season. Oregon, which finished fifth a year ago, moved up two spots to take third. Ava Hackman led the way in seventh place with a 92, and Cassie Nyderek placed 11th with a 96. The Hawks came in looking to give Rock Falls a run for the team title, but were happy with third after playing in such drastically different conditions than they have all season. “I was hoping for at least second, but for how windy and cold it was, and

such a big change from the weekend, it was overall great,” Nyderek said. “As a team, I think we did pretty well,” Hackman added. “I think we could’ve done better today, but with the conditions, I think we did pretty well.” Hackman, who took 10th as a sophomore last year with a 94, said it wasn’t the cold that affected her, but the fact that the wind would change directions depending on which hole she was playing. Her short game and approach shots were the key to her round. “It was my chipping, most of the time. I also hit my second shots pretty

well,” she said. “With me, the cold doesn’t really bother me, because I’ve played a lot in it and I know how to cope with it. But the wind is a little tricky, because it was coming from both sides, front and back, so it was harder to pick a club.” Lena Trampel shot a 102 and Mia Trampel had a 106 for the Hawks, while Alexis Davis (110) and Mya Hernandez (136) also competed. After Drew and Fiorini, Stillman Valley’s Grace Haas (80), Winnebago’s Kyra Simon (84), and Rockford Christian’s Emily Kneller (86) rounded out the top five.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) responds to several citizen complaints each fall regarding the open burning of landscape waste and other materials. These complaints range from the illegal open burning of waste and trash to nuisance conditions produced by smoldering leaves, grass clippings, and other landscape waste. The OCSWMD discourages the open burning of landscape waste in Ogle County and encourages residents to either bag up and have the landscape waste hauled away to be composted, or use the lawnmower to mulch up fallen leaves, as opposed to open burning. DORIS ‘SNOOKY’ LORRAINE (BARNHART) SNAPP Born: August 25, 1938 Died: September 1, 2021

Doris Snapp – medical technologist, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and all-around best friend – passed away surrounded by her family on Sept. 1, 2021, while in hospice in Fresno, Calif. Doris was born at home on Aug. 25, 1938 in rural northwestern Illinois in a house with no electricity or running water, and her life’s journey ended shortly after her 83rd birthday with Doris having mastered texting, Portal calls and Zoom sessions in order to stay in touch with her large circle of family and friends. Doris is survived by her daughters, Catherine L. Snapp (Mark Ludwig) of Sacramento, Calif.; Laura A. Linville (James Linville) of Portland, Ore.; and Annette L. Snapp (Gloria Sajgo) of Fort Myers, Fla.; and nine grandchildren: Lynnette, Stephanie, Catherine, Miriah, Scott, Madeline and Jacqueline Linville; and Ashley and Christoph Ludwig; and great-granddaughter Samantha DaMota (Stephanie’s daughter).

Doris is also survived by her sisters, Della “Polly” Martin and Donna “Duffy” Reuter of Freeport, Ill.; Karen Kulas of Pearl City, Ill.; and Edith “Jean” Donahue (Gerald) of Carbondale, Ill.; and her brother, Kenneth Barnhart (Susan) of Weslaco, Texas; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Snapp, her father, Earl Barnhart; her mother, Viola (Bonner) Barnhart; and her brother Richard Barnhart (Kathleen). Her memorial service was Saturday, Sept. 25, at Atwater United Methodist Church, 2550 Linden St., Atwater, Calif. A final memorial service will be held in northwestern Illinois in the summer of 2022. Doris was born and grew up in Pine Creek Township near Mt. Morris in northern Illinois. She was the third-oldest of seven children. In a family with colorful nicknames, her nickname of “Snooky” or “Snooks” was bestowed upon her by her family after the mischievous radio character Baby Snooks and doll of the time. Doris walked along Pine Creek on the way to a one-room schoolhouse, sledded down the frozen mill race in the winter with her sisters and brothers and helped to raise vegetables. She moved with family to “town” in Mt. Morris, where she attended Mt. Morris High School and graduated in 1956. Doris married Robert Grant Snapp on Aug. 30, 1957, at the

Doris exemplified the pioneer professional woman of the 1970s: going back to school in her 30s, first at Highland Community College in Freeport, Ill and then at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. In 1974 she earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science/medical technology/technologist from NIU. In 1974, Doris, Bob and the girls moved to Effingham, Ill., where Doris worked at St Anthony Memorial Hospital as a medical technologist and in 1981, the family moved to Merced, Calif. where she also worked as a medical technologist at what was then Mercy Hospital. In 1988, Doris and Bob moved to nearby Atwater, Calif., and Doris continued to work as a medical technologist and also earned a California real estate license. During this time, Doris and Bob sponsored a young Japanese exchange student, Kio Shimizu, who became part of their extended family as she visited them more than 20 times – in later visits bringing her sister and then her husband and two sons. Doris and Bob attended Kio’s wedding in Japan. We remember Doris for her love of learning – she was an avid reader and book club member – and her love of people. She treasured the friends that she made throughout her life. Doris enjoyed taking writing classes and

sharing her writings with family. She was an active church member and very involved in her community, including as a Girl Scout leader who took her troop on overnight canoe and bike trips. Doris also enjoyed traveling and the outdoors. She traveled with her daughter Annette to Mexico and later visited Annette several times in England. Her travels with family – including to and from family reunions – spawned a whole genre of family stories that were told and retold. Doris and her daughter Annette relentlessly searched for the birth family of her late mother, Viola Bonner, and used DNA searches to find the family just a few years ago through her newly discovered first cousin, Janet McDonald. Doris met her mother’s sister, Hildreth (Bruschwein) Grimes, and was elated by Aunt Hildreth’s warm welcome. She felt very lucky to be accepted as part of the Bruschwein/Wiens family and to expand her family circle and repertoire of family stories. Two recycling opportunities for Ogle residents in October

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be hosting two residential electronics recycling events in the coming weeks. Events will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These events are by advance permit only and will be held at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in

Oregon. Call the OCSWMD at 815732-4020 or email solidwaste@oglecounty.org to acquire a free electronic recycling permit. You will need to provide your name, address, phone number, and email address. Permits are limited and are for Ogle County

residents only. Permits will be available for these events up until two days prior to the event or until the event is at capacity. Permits allow county residents to bring up to seven large items in for recycling, and each permit comes with a full list of accepted items.

The OCSWMD is once again holding a food drive during the October and November recycling events. They are asking attendees to bring in non-perishable food items to these events. All food donations will be donated to local food pantries as was done back in 2019.

Sept. 22 Deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash at Illinois Route 64 and Illinois Route 26 at 6:56 p.m. After an investigation, deputies learned Margaret L. Kovaka, 74, of Savanna, was driving westbound on Illinois Route 64 when she drove through the intersection, exited the roadway and drove through a retention pond before coming to a stop. Kovaka was transported to KSB Hospital in Dixon for nonlife-threatening injuries sustained in the crash. The Polo Fire Protection District and Polo Police Department assisted on the scene. Sept. 23 Bradley Burke, 36, of Dixon, was arrested for driving while under the

Sept. 26 Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 1000 block of Illinois Route 64 at approximately noon. After an investigation, deputies learned Paul Branning, 53, of Oregon, was traveling eastbound in the 1000 block of Illinois Route 64 on a Harley Davidson motorcycle when a black Ford F250 driven by Jeffrey Boyden, 48, of Oregon, pulled out of a private drive and struck Branning. Branning was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash. Boydon was cited for failure to yield at a private drive, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident

and expired registration. Sept. 27 At 1:11 p.m., deputies and Byron Fire/EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 6900 block of Illinois Route 2. After an investigation, deputies determined Donald L. Cleven, 90, of Madison, Wisconsin, was driving a Chevrolet Sonic southbound on Illinois Route 2 and attempted to merge from two lanes down to one lane. As Cleven was merging, he struck the front driver’s side bumper of a Peterbilt tractor, driven by Jose Rodriguez Arreguin, 59, of Rockford, that was in the lane Cleven was attempting to merge into. Cleven struck the front bumper of the Peterbilt with the rear passenger side of his vehicle, lost control of his Chevrolet and entered the west ditch. Cleven and his passenger were checked by Byron EMS. Cleven was transported to SwedishAmerican Hospital as a precaution, but did not appear to have any injuries. Cleven’s passenger was released. Rodriguez Arreguin was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

Crafts and collectibles, a parade with marching bands and floats, strolling entertainers and lots of good treats to eat are just some of the staples of this year’s festival. The theme for the popular two-day event is “Rockin’ 50 Years”, marking the festival’s 50th anniversary. To celebrate that milestone, the all-volunteer AOP committee has added a new attraction – a beer garden with live bands. “Patrons of AOP have requested a beer garden in the past, so the AOP

committee decided to add this event to the 50th anniversary celebration,” AOP committee member Dave Boehle said. The beer garden, sponsored by Martin & Company Excavating, will be on Saturday only, in the 100 block of South Jefferson Street between Third and Fourth streets. You must be 21 to enter. A $5 cover charge will be collected, which will include the first beverage. Local band Burn N’ Bush will be performing from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by another local favorite, Blue Steel, from 3 to 6 p.m. “Our local pub Tipsy Hog will be providing the beverages,” Boehle said. But the heart of the festival is the Farmers Market and Craft Fair that features more than 150 vendors selling arts and crafts ranging from handmade wood items to homemade

baked breads. Booths are set up around the lawn of the historic Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets on both Saturday and Sunday. Ornamental produce, locally produced honey, jewelry, soaps, candles, antiques, seasonal items and homemade pies are just a few of the hundreds of items that can be found throughout the show. Visitors to Autumn on Parade can partake in scrumptious treats in the Food Court, where local nonprofit organizations prepare their specialties each year. Apple fritters, pork chop sandwiches, funnel cakes, bratwurst, kettle corn and gyros are just some of the items offered. The festival is one of the major fundraising events for most of the nonprofit groups in the food court. On Sunday, Autumn on Parade’s

annual Harvest Time parade will march through the streets of Oregon. The annual event, which has about 125 entries each year, is known as one of the most entertaining parades in the region. Entertainment includes The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Chicago Drill Team and local marching bands, clowns, queens and floats. Stronghold’s Olde English Faire will not be held this year. Other Autumn on Parade events include a Car Show, Antique Tractor Classic, and tours of the Chana School Museum on Saturday at Oregon Park East. A Fun Zone for kids with bounce houses and a petting zoo next to the Oregon Coliseum in the 100 block of North Fifth Street and a 5K and Fun Run on Sunday morning, Oct. 3.
