Shop local and everyone wins!

Shopping locally not only means getting to see the same friendly faces each time you patronize a nearby business, it also means keeping money in your community. A study from American Express, the company that founded Small Business Saturday (which is celebrated the day after Black Friday), and the National Federation of Independent Business found that roughly two-thirds of every dollar spent at a small business ultimately stays in the local community. That boils down to 67 cents out of every dollar. The American Independent Business Alliance also references the “local multiplier” regarding local spending. This occurs when people spend at a locally-owned and independent business instead of chain stores or mega online retailers. Although the exact amount of dollars recirculated by locally-owned businesses varies due to certain unique criteria, retail studies conducted by Civic Economics has found a person’s dollars at these locally-owned businesses recirculate through the local economy two to four times more than money spent at non-local companies. This money helps generate more local wealth, charitable contributions and jobs.

National Pizza Month is celebrated in October. Check out these facts that may get you even more fired up about pizza!

The United States celebrates National Pizza Month each October. Check out these facts that are bound to get you even more fired up about pizza!

• More than 10 percent of food service sales in the United States involve pizza. Plenty of people are ordering pizza to their homes or dining at restaurants that serve this beloved dish.

• Pepperoni is the most popular added pizza topping.

• Pizza consumption tends to be highest during sporting events.

Pizza retailers sell millions of pizzas during the Super Bowl every year.

• When pizza originated in Naples, Italy, it was intended to be an option for low-income families, as it was a cheap meal to make at home.

• Around 80 percent of Italian cheese production in the United States revolves around making mozzarella to accommodate the pizza industry.

• Americans love pizza. Of the more than five billion pizzas sold worldwide each year, about 60 percent of them are sold in the U.S.

• The outer edge of the pizza is known as the “cornicione.”

Despite the interesting name, chances are someone in your household leaves that crusty goodness behind on their plate.

• When American World War II soldiers returned home after eating pizza in Italy, they brought their love for this food with them and helped bring pizza to the masses.

• Each year, the International Pizza Expo takes place so that those in the pizza industry can share information about this delicious food.

A night out on the town enjoying delicious food with friends is a recipe for a memorable evening. Restaurant tours can be a great way to sample various local cuisines in a single night and can be especially enjoyable when organizers take some planning tips to heart.

• Confirm restaurant availability. A food tour might be best begun prior to the evening dinner rush, so it’s best to call ahead and confirm each establishment’s hours and menu availability. Some restaurants may not offer a full menu prior to dinner hours, while others may have tasting menus that could be ideal for a food tour.

• Confirm how many people will be attending. A headcount is vital when planning a restaurant tour. Many establishments will require reservations, particularly for larger parties. It’s best to ask invited guests to confirm if they will be attending in advance.

• Encourage guests to share any dietary restrictions. No two people are the same, and that’s something to keep in mind when organizing a tour. When inviting guests, ask each person to identify their dietary restrictions, including food allergies.

• Consider a multi-night event. It’s not always necessary to start and finish a restaurant tour in one day. If time allows, consider stretching the tour out over a full weekend. This can allow people a chance to eat a little more at each stop if they desire.

• Go meal by meal. Food tours are often conducted within a given time frame. For example, a tour may be designed to begin and end in four hours. But planners also can go meal by meal, visiting a different local restaurant for each meal of the day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). This approach can be ideal if planners find tasting menus hard to come by.

Make your living room a more comfortable space

A kitchen is widely recognized as the most popular room in a home. Though it might be true that home life runs through the kitchen, many a memory is made in the living room as well. Living rooms tend to be go-to spaces for family movie nights, game watching and places to gather during holiday celebrations. That’s a lot of quality time spent in the living room, and those moments can be more enjoyable if the space is as comfortable as possible. With that in mind, people can consider various ways to make living rooms more comfortable.

• Prioritize comfort over aesthetics. Aesthetic appeal certainly has its place in a living room, but it’s important to remember how much living will be done in this room when designing it. Comfortable couches and furnishings can make it easier to relax, whether you’re watching a movie, cheering on your favorite team or reading a book.

• Ensure there’s ample seating. It can be hard to feel comfortable in cramped quarters whether you’re welcoming friends and family into your home or simply lounging around on Sunday mornings. If comfort is your top priority, arrange the room so there’s ample seating so people don’t feel like they’re sitting on top of one another.

• Consider neutral paint colors. Furnishings are not the only things that can affect how comfortable people feel in a living room. The home improvement experts at The Spruce note that neutral paint colors with warm undertones help to establish a cozy feel. Various shades of white, beige, tan, or gray can help to establish a warm, comfortable vibe.

• Incorporate the outdoors into the room. The great outdoors can have a calming effect on anyone, so it makes sense that bringing the outdoors into a living room can make the space feel more comfortable. Furnish the room with plants and look for items with earth-toned furnishings to create a relaxed vibe in the space. New windows that allow for more natural light and offer views into a yard can also help.

Make kitchen improvements. The kitchen is the heart of many homes. Real estate agents may recommend that homeowners make minor to moderate kitchen upgrades like resurfacing cabinets, upgrading countertops and changing fixtures or hardware to give the room an overhaul.

Homeowners with properties they are considering listing for sale would be wise to make certain changes that will help garner the best prices from buyers.

Declutter the home. Homeowners should clean out items they no longer need. Decluttering can make a space feel bigger, which is beneficial in a market where open concept floor plans remain popular among home buyers. When buyers walk through a prospective home, they want to envision themselves living there, something that is more easily done if the home isn’t overrun with the current homeowner’s belongings.

Get to painting. Painting a home is a cost-effective renovation with a lot of oomph. Freshly painted rooms appear clean and updated. Homeowners should choose neutral colors to accommodate the widest array of potential buyers.

Improve the landscaping. The exterior of a home is the first thing potential buyers will see as they roll up to view a property or look at a listing online. Ensure the lawn is well maintained and add plants that provide color without a lot of maintenance.

Expand usable space. Think about adding to the usable space in a home. This translates into finishing basements or attics or converting garages to rooms. It may even involve adding a three-season room.

Having pets is an ideal opportunity to introduce children to some measure of responsibility. Introducing children to age-appropriate pet-related tasks can set the groundwork for a lifetime of loving and caring for companion animals. Children shouldn’t be given all of the responsibilities of caring for pets, but there are some notable roles they can play.

• Teach gentle interactions. Toddlers may be unaware of how rough they are being. Therefore, they will need a lot of supervision and reinforcement to learn how to be gentle when petting or engaging with companion animals.

• Start off with some play sessions. Playing together is a great way for kids and pets to bond and get some exercise. They can play games like high-five, rolling over, finding treats in hidden places, and practicing tricks or commands. Children also may be able to do short training sessions with pets, like helping them get acclimated to a new pet carrier or wearing a leash.

• Family vet visits. Children can learn a lot about pet health and care at the vet’s office. Bring youngsters along to help out and see what is involved in routine veterinary visits. Kids can soothe and distract the pet during the adminstration of vaccines and watch how a vet assesses an animal’s overall health. Watching a pet go through a physical examination also may help a child become more brave in relation to his or her own medical check-ups.

• Participate in feeding. Children can be responsible for putting pre-measured s scoops of food in the bowl for feeding and help refill the water. Kids also may be able to offer treats to pets who are able to take them gently out of hand.

• Teach about quiet time. Pets need opportunities to rest, and children should understand that quiet time means the pet should be left alone. Kids can help set up a cozy napping spot where a dog or cat can retreat when they need rest.

A wicked good time... for adults!

Halloween may seem like child’s play, but many adults participate in Halloween hijinks. According to the National Retail Federation, $1.7 billion was spent on adult Halloween costumes, while $1.2 billion was spent on kids’ costumes. Those planning Halloween parties for adults may be inspired by these frighteningly fun ideas.

• Hallo-wine time. Make a Halloween party even more spirited with a winethemed party. Party hosts can try to find wines with macabre-sounding names.

• Classy gathering. While Halloween may be about ghastly and ghostly decorations, some party hosts may want to have parties that offer subtle nods to Halloween instead. Black-and-white plates on purple placemats with orange candles or centerpieces can set the tone for a fancy Halloween gathering.

• Murder mystery party. Guests follow a script and figure out “Who done it?”

Some of the biggest challenges with this type of party are creating the characters and story. Free printable scripts make it easier for event planning.

• “Ghouls” night out. Girlfriends can get together and plan a coordinated costume theme and then have a girls night out by visiting various bars or restaurants around town.

• Scary surgeon. Plan a party around a mad scientist or scary surgeon concept. Decorations can include laboratory equipment or doctors’ tools, and foods can be made to look like body parts.
