It’s baking time
Newton Main Street Baking Contest back at Newton Fest By Jamee A. Pierson Newton News Cookies, brownies, pie and more, the Newton Main Street Baking Contest is a sweet treat for Newton Fest. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, bakers can drop off their delicious delicacies to be judged in hopes of placing first, second or third in the contest. “The idea came from the chair of the promotion committee, Laurie. We wanted something that all ages could be involved in,” Newton Main Street Director Erin Yeager said. “(Last time) it went well, we are hoping to get more entries this year. Bakers, get to baking and bring in your goodies!” Anyone can participate in the baking contest. Those 17 and under can only en-
ter the kid category of Cookies, Brownies or Dessert Bars. Adults can only enter the three adult categories; however, they can enter multiple categories but only one entry per category. The categories include: Kid Cookies, Brownies or Dessert Bars — This category is intended for baked cookies, brownies, or dessert bars; Adult Cookies — This category is intended for baked cookies; Adult Pie — This category is intended for baked pies (fruit, custard, etc.) and Adult Dessert Bars — This category is intended for dessert bars. Preregistration is available along with registration the day of the event. Check in runs from 10 to 10:25 a.m. Saturday at the Newton Main Street Office, 122 First St. N. Judging will take place at 10:30 a.m.
“Participants may enter any recipe and it does not need to be an original recipe created by the entrant,” Yeager said. “Recipes may come from cookbooks, magazines, websites or any other means.” Participants are asked to bring a copy of the recipe, and submissions must be home-cooked. Also, no refrigeration is available. All entries need to have a quantity of a half dozen or more and a full pie must be submitted. Recipes will be judged on criteria including appearance (maximum 10 points), taste (maximum 10 points) and creativity (maximum 10 points) with a maximum total of 30 points possible. Finalist will be announced at 11:30 a.m. and must be present to receive the prize.
WIND-WIND SITUATION TPI Composites holds interactive open house at library By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News The largest employer in Jasper County will be hosting an interactive open house for families to learn all about the wind energy industry. TPI Composites will hold its wind energy interactive open house noon-3 p.m. June 12 at the Newton Public Library, 100 N. Third Ave. W., during Newton Fest. Along with games to participate in and prizes to win, guests will have a chance to enter a raffle and win an electric LEGO Creator
Wind Turbine Building Kit. All ages are welcome to participate. “Being that we are the largest employer in Jasper County, we are thrilled to offer an interactive, fun event where we can bring a little bit of TPI to the community and celebrate such an awesome city like Newton,” TPI Community and Associate Relations Coordinator Katelyn Kolsrud said. TPI has been manufacturing composite wind blades since 2001. The company is a leading wind blade manufacturer and the only independent wind blade manufacturer with a global footprint. TPI also “accounted for approximately 13 percent of all onshore wind blades on a MW-basis globally in
2020.” In 2020, TPI reached a record high in net sales, earning $1.7 billion and producing more than 10,600 wind blades. Headquarters located in Scottsdale, Ariz., TPI holds domestic facilities in Warren, R.I. and Santa Teresa, N.M. in addition to Newton. International facilities are held in Dafeng, Taicang Port and Yangzhou, Jiangsu in China; Kolding, Denmark; Chennai, India; Juarez and Matamoros in Mexico; and Izmir, Turkey. TPI Iowa has been located in Newton since 2008. The facility is dedicated to advanced wind blade manufacturing to serve markets in North America.

Finish a 5K, get a free beer — what could be better?
Gezellig to host Brewery Running Series and celebrate 2-year anniversary By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News Is there a better incentive to join a 5K run than the promise of a cold beer at the finish line? If you ask the folks over at the Iowa Brewery Running Series, they’d probably say no. Operated and locally managed by Iowa natives Kadyn Hutchinson and Audrie Leib, the series regularly holds fun-runs at breweries. Without the pressure of a time clock weighing on their minds, runners are encouraged to just participate. Oh! And enjoy a tasty craft beer, too. Iowa Brewery Running Series’ Run for Beer 5K will be held 11
a.m.-2 p.m. June 12 at Gezellig Brewing Company, 403 W. Fourth St. N., during Newton Fest. The 5K course starts and ends at the local microbrewery, whose taproom has earned numerous awards since it opened in 2019. Of course, there’s a free beer waiting for participants who complete the course. Don’t feel rushed though. Organizers welcome all levels of runners, walkers, joggers and crawlers, so go at your own pace. Participants will also receive their choice of a collector’s pint glass or seasonal swag items from the Brewery Running Series, which got its start in Minneapolis in 2012. Door prizes like merchandise or a growler are also up for grabs. Event festivities, games, goodies and

giveaways are also available to those registered. Registration is limited, so sign up ASAP. Ever since Brewery Running Series’ inaugural event nine years ago, the organization has been able to donate more than $200,000 to local nonprofits. The event at Newton Fest will add to that tally, organizers said. The 5K run is an open course, meaning roads will not be closed. Participants must bring a valid ID or driver’s license and are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and regulations. The course is designed to show off the surrounding neighborhood and will be marked with arrows. Although runners don’t have to be 21 to enjoy the event, they must be of age to enjoy the beer. But please drink responsibly. In addition to hosting the beer run, Gezellig is celebrating its twoyear anniversary during Newton Fest. The brewery located in Legacy Plaza first opened its doors to the public at the popular 2019 Newton Fest, which attracted hundreds to thousands of people to the new space. Betsy Duffy, who co-owns Gezellig with Mindi Vanden Bosch, said staff kicked it into high gear to meet the influx of people. And it’s a good thing, too, because there was a line out the door throughout most of Newton Fest. Since then, Gezellig has fortified its position a top notch brewery in the state. And it has the awards to prove it. In 2019, Gezellig earned two silver medals from the Great American Beer Festival for its All The Goodness (saison) and Hug Deal Gone Sideweiss (hefeweizen) beers, which have been officially canned and distributed to local stores thanks to a partnership with Confluence Brewing Company.
One year later, Gezellig won another GABF silver medal for its Hugzilla (rye hazy double IPA) beer. The 2020 San Diego International Beer Competition earned Gezellig the title of “Champion Brewery,” along with three gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal. “The awards I just view as the icing on the cake,” Duffy said. “What I’m most proud of, really, is making it this far. We’ve had a whole lot of challenges. Owning a business is very much like raising a child. There is not one single day that I do not worry about this business.” Gezellig didn’t even get to truly celebrate its oneyear anniversary because of the pandemic. As it enters its second year in the community, the brewery is ready to hop to it and celebrate. Vanden Bosch said, “We have such an amazing team at Gezellig and we are so thankful for all who have supported us. Thanks to Betsy, Grant, Lucas and all the staff to making Gezellig such a success. Also, thanks to DMACC and the City of Newton for an amazing welcome.” The two-year anniversary party begins 4 p.m. June 11. Ready for a good time The Nadas, Damon Dotson headline Newton Fest entertainment By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Homegrown talent will rock the stage for Newton Fest 2021. The party begins Thursday with Okoboji native Damon Dotson and finishes Saturday with The Nadas both starting at 7 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl at Maytag Park. “It was decided to go with two Central Iowa-based bands this year as the situation around musicians and touring was uncertain at the end of last year when we started exploring having Newton Fest in 2021. The bands we’ve booked play music that will appeal to a wide variety of music fans,” Newton Fest organizer Danielle Rogers said. “Damon Dotson and his band have ties to Newton — they’ve played at several venues in town including Newton Fest several years ago, the summer concert series and RAGBRAI. The Nadas are a Central Iowa icon and have wildly successful shows around the area and draw large crowds wherever they go. With their Iowa roots, it was quite a shock that they had never played in Newton before.” Keeping with the tradition of the Summer Concert Series, Rogers said it made sense to have the entertainment at the outdoor amphitheater. The space can not only hold a large number of patrons but is also a beautiful location made for these kinds of events. “With pandemic-related closures at DMACC and Legacy Plaza (where Newton Fest concerts have occurred for several years), Maytag Bowl seemed like the perfect venue,” Rogers said. “Maytag Bowl also allows people to social distance and be outdoors, so it was ideal for the concerts. And Maytag Bowl is a gem — so why not show it off?” With the last year bringing challenges nobody could foresee, from a world-wide pandemic to the derecho storm, Newton Fest is a time the community can celebrate. Both acts will put on performances to remember and show just how awesome it is to be in Newton.
“Newton Fest is a way to celebrate all things Newton — and that includes how the community pulled together in 2020. While Newton Fest may be slightly different this year, it was essential to bring the community together through various activities and events. And that includes live music at Maytag Bowl,” Rogers said. “I’m excited that we are at a point in 2021 to enjoy live, outdoor music as a community safely.” The Nadas For almost 27 years, The Nadas have entertained audiences not only across the State of Iowa but throughout the country and beyond. Born from two Iowa State University students Jason Walsmith and Mike Butterworth around 1993, The Nadas have gone on to play with acts including The Beach Boys, America, Bon Jovi and Huey Lewis. Now with bassist Brian Duffy and drummer Brandon Stone, the groups plays a mix of country, rock, alternative and indie with flawless songwriting and catchy melodies for a crowd-pleasing experience. Having sold more than 200,000 albums, the groups is sure to put on a great show for Newton Fest 2021. Damon Dotson A local favorite, this isn’t the first trip to Newton for Damon Dotson. The singer/songwriter now based out of Des Moines has played the Summer Concert Series, Newton Fest and other events throughout the community. Having been named “Best Local Musician” two years in a row, Dotson has sustained his career for
15 years and has released four original albums including “Tumblin,” which reached number 24 on the iTunes Rock chart. During his time performing, Dotson has opened for legends including BB King, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys and Huey Lewis and The News along with modern artists such as Matt Nathanson, The Band Perry, Edwin McCain and The Lone Bellow. He keeps a busy schedule performing more than 180 shows a year. His performance kicking off Newton Fest 2021 is sure to be one to remember.

BOSS HOG BBQ connoisseurs duke it out for bragging rights and good cause By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News It’s a little known fact the best type of contest is one that involves food. Newton Fest will again host the Q 4 Causes BBQ Contest at noon June 12 in Maytag Park, 301 S. 11th Ave. W. The 2021 competition features a dozen contestants vying for awards and the all-important bragging rights. When it comes to BBQ competitions, everyone wants to be boss hog. Or, in the case of the non-cooking guests, a taste of the action. And if the 2019 contest is anything
to go by, the food will be gone quickly. Indeed, the Newton News knows all too well just how fast festival taste-testers can scarf down delicious ribs, pulled pork and chicken wings. Organizers said in 2019 the food was all gone in about 15 minutes. Judging for the BBQ contest takes place in half-hour intervals starting at 11 a.m. By noon, the public will be allowed to sample the meats for a free will donation of $5 a plate. The proceeds of which will benefit Discover Hope 517. Awards will then be distributed after the feed. Q 4 Causes is a nonprofit organization consisting of four local families. In
2019, the BBQ contest at Newton Fest raised $1,625 for a local nonprofit. START YOUR ENGINES Whose car gets ‘draggin’ rights? By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News Think you have a cool car? Well, there’s only one way to find out for sure.
At the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Cool Cars” Car Show, participants and their engine-revving, chromed behemoths have a chance to earn trophies, including “Best of Show” and “People’s Choice.” Trophies will also be available for the different classes of cars, including “Best Truck” and “Best Convertible.” Whether they’re sporting a restored classics or a newer model beefed up with the latest specs, all car enthusiasts are welcome to participate and register online at
www.experiencenewton.com/events/newtonfestcool-cars-car-show. The “Cool Cars” Car Show is held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 12 in the town square during Newton Fest. Those who pre-registered only have to pay $10; the first 150 registered will also receive a free dash plaque. Otherwise, participants will have to pay a $15 registration fee the day of the car show. Day-of registration is 9-10 a.m. Participants can begin parking at 7 a.m. To be included in judging, participants must pre-register. Sponsors for this year’s car show include Harris Rebar, TPI Composites, TruBank and United Land Title Company. Spectators and gawkers can enjoy a live DJ playing your favorite classic tunes. The car show is free to attend. Amanda Price, executive director of the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Chamber is excited to be hosting our ‘Cool Cars’ Car Show this year around the downtown square. The car show will feature some amazing old and new cars and trucks that are fully restored and beautiful.” In 2019, the “Cool Cars” Car Show attracted a record breaking 150-175 cars of all types and eras. Back then the car show attracted hundreds — if not thousands — of visitors to scour through the lines of impressive looking cars.

Shared pride keeps alumni connections strong Newton grads reunite for golf tourney, class window contest, fundraisers By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News Newton Cardinals share a special bond that is exemplified every year during alumni weekend. Graduates of Newton High School return to town to not only reunite with old classmates and friends, but also enjoy each other’s company and participate in numerous activities and fundraisers. Lisa McKinney, president of the Newton Alumni Association, credits both the community and the school district for keeping graduates in touch with one another for all these years. Many alumni look back fondly on their high school experience and can’t wait to catch up, swap stories and make new memories. It’s the Red Pride and the camaraderie that keeps alumni together, she said. “We even have people that come from out of state,” McKinney said. “It’s the sense of community. Think of the Fourth of July Parade how people turn out for that. We have that same level of community for our alumni. And I think that’s what sets us above and beyond what a lot of schools do.” Newton Alumni Weekend on June 11-12 is the culmination of that sense of community, which remains prevalent with each new graduating class. This year, alumni weekend organizers are celebrating classes ending in 0, 1, 5 and 6, which are invited to participate in the class window contest. As usual, numerous events will be held throughout the two-day celebration. The all-class reunion will be held 6 p.m.-midnight June 11 at the Hotel Maytag Ballroom. North Second Avenue East between First Street and Second Street will be blocked off for the group. Admission is $5 per person and includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres
until gone. At the same time, Muse Wine Bar will be offering beverages to thirsty alumni. Food trucks will be set up at the end of the block. Mid-Town will also be open for food, seating and small class gatherings. Classes will be assigned a table to decorate and gather in both Mid-Town and the Hotel Maytag Ballroom. A Saturday brunch and a Hall of Fame award ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Newton High School, where tickets
cost $12. Class reps can accept payments for their class. Payments can be mailed to Newton Alumni Assn., PO Box 623, Newton, Iowa 50208. Of course one of the main attractions at this year’s alumni weekend is the second annual Jack Chadwick Golf Tournament, named after the famed Newton High School golf coach and teacher. The tourney will be held at 1 p.m. June 12. In case of rain, the tournament will be rescheduled to June 13. Call Westwood Golf Pro Brad Sponseller at 641-792-3087 to reserve a spot. ALUMNI WEEKEND 2021 McKinney said the tournament debuted in 2019. Because of the pandemic, the 2020 tourney and every other subsequent community event was cancelled. However, the 2019 tournament was a huge hit and she expects that trend will continue in 2021. Chadwick was present during the 2019 tournament. In April 2021, the former golf coach died at the age of 81 at his dual residency in Florida. The love for Chadwick will certainly be present at this year’s event. “There was such a tremendous turnout in 2019,” McKinney said. “The golfers and
the golf team absolutely loved him. They showed up in force to really show their respect, and we were thrilled not only to do that for him but that in turn he could see just what an impact he made on golf in Newton.” Currently, the Newton Alumni Association is raising money for the high school cross country team’s new course. Classes, individuals and businesses are invited to donate toward this cause. McKinney said the cross country team has never had its own course to practice and have meets. The association will still be accepting donations.
