Newton Fest will be full of revving engines in downtown, Iowa Speedway By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News Downtown Newton truly is a marvelous sight to behold when it is full of people, and full of awesome looking cars and motorcycles. Newton Main Street is kickstarting the engine roaring with Thunder Nites. The annual community motorcycle rally makes its triumphant return after a brief hiatus and is now under the watchful eye of Main Street volunteers. As an added bonus, the bike night event from 6 to 10 p.m. June 10 will be held downtown. Laurie Moffitt, chairperson of Newton Main Street’s promotions/organization committee, told Newton News in April that the new ownership allows the downtown organization to turn Thunder Nites into a fundraiser, ensuring there will be more bike nights and opportunities for economic vitality for years to come. So far the community interest seems high, judging by the positive feedback Main Street received when it announced it was taking over Thunder Nites. “I was overwhelmed by it in a good way,” Moffitt said. “But now I guess that makes it even more exciting for the city of Newton to be able to have an event like this that does bring so many people from different cities and states and gives us an opportunity to really show off our downtown.” After the bikes leave, classic cars and sporty rides will take over the town square. The Greater Newton Area Chamber
of Commerce’s “Cool Cars” Car Show will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 11. Parking and registration for participating cars will be from 8 to 10 a.m. The registration fee is $10, or $15 the day of. According to information posted by the chamber, the car show will award trophies for best of show, people’s choice and other classes. Pre-register for the car show at the chamber office, 113 First Ave. W., calling by phone at 641-792-5545 or online at www. experiencenewton.com. Are there opportunities for trophies? Well, duh! Participants can win the coveted “best of show” trophy or “people’s choice” award, in addition to the honors for different classes. When the car browsing has finished, Newton Fest guests can make their way to the Iowa Speedway for even more car action. The ARCA Menards Series Race begins at 8 p.m. June 11 at the Iowa Speedway. Grandstand tickets start at just $19. Kids ages 12 and under can see the race for free! Danielle Rogers, community marketing manager for the City of Newton, said the volunteers involved with car show and bike nights have years of experience making events downtown happen successfully. “…I’m excited to see people back on the square for these two iconic events,” Rogers said. “I think people get excited being in the heart of the community and the downtown is definitely one of the gems of Newton that those of us who plan events like to showcase.

FREE FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN AT NEWTON FEST Newton Fest is chock full of activities for kids at no cost to parents By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News Summer fun is best spent with family, and what better way to kick off the season than with family-friendly activities at Newton Fest. Organizers have packed the festival schedule with free festivities to keep the kiddos and parents entertained throughout the multi-day event. For the creative types, DMACC Newton Campus’s “Chalk the Walk” allows participants to tap into their inner artists with a chalk art competition 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 9 at Maytag Park. The theme is “Summer Time in Newton.” Prizes will be given out for best themed, most creative and best under 13. Wash off the chalk the next day with a free community pool party from 7 to 9 p.m. June 10 at Maytag Pool. Sponsored by Advantage Credit Union, the pool party will have concession sales available to all who participate. And, yes, you read that right — the pool is open free of charge. Stop! Drop! Roll! Well, most kids already know all that thanks to our local first responders. Safety Fest from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. at Maytag Park reunites the youth with their in-town firefighters and police officers who have hands-on activities that give kids a glimpse of what it’s like to use a fire hose or sit on a police bike. In addition, staff from Newton Public Library will be on standby for a miniature storytime session with a safety book,
along with stickers and temporary tattoos. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will have kids crafts and a story walk from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maytag Park. Fun Zone activities featuring inflatables and laser tag will be held for kids all ages noon to 4 p.m. throughout the park. Oh! And for those families who just want to relax (and be amazed), a magic show featuring Eric Michaels will be held 1 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl. Danielle Rogers, community marketing manager for the City of Newton, said Newton Fest is meant to be a way to celebrate all the incredible things happening in the community. It is also meant to be a fun way for families to get out and enjoy their hometown at places like Maytag Park, downtown or Legacy Plaza. “We don’t want the activities to be cost prohibitive,” Rogers said. “So activities like the free community pool party hosted by Advantage Credit Union at Maytag Pool, the chalk the walk event that DMACC is organizing at Maytag Park, the free inflatables and laser tag that the City brings to the open area at Maytag Park, the free concerts at Maytag Bowl featuring Opus Taylor on Thursday and Damon Dotson + Band on Saturday, or even Safety Fest hosted by the Newton Police Department and Newton Fire Department will be ways that families can get out, enjoy our great parks and amenities without making a dent in their pocketbook.”

For instance, the folks who really want a workout can mosey on over to Gezellig Brewing Compa-
ny for the Iowa Brewery Running Series Run for Beer 5K. The run is from 10 a.m. to noon June 11. It’s a fun run so take it as seriously as you like. Because after you cross the finish line you get a free beer! Of course, you don’t have to run it. Organizers are more than OK with having participants walk or jog the route. Participants also get their choice of a collector’s pint

NHS Alumni Weekend 2022
REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD Cardinals from all graduating classes to have reunion party at Legacy Plaza By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News Legacy Plaza is the home of the All Class Reunion this year. Newton Alumni Weekend will kick off 6 p.m. June 10 at 400 W. Fourth St. N. Building 20. Both Gezellig Brewing Co. and The Cellar Peanut Pub will serve as beverage providers for Cardinal alumni. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served to those who pay the $7 cover charge per person, which will support Dollar For Scholars. Food trucks will also be getting up at the venue for more access to delicious eats. Classes will be assigned a table to decorate and gather at Building 20 and the courtyard. Newton Alumni Association will be reaching out to class representatives. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance, but the association requests advance tickets so they can plan food accordingly. find out where your Saturday night class reunion will be held. Information to venues are on the “Reunion Info” tab at www.newtonalumni.org. Ike’s, Pizza Ranch and Elk’s have classes already scheduled. The June 12 brunch and hall of fame will start at 9:30 a.m. at the Newton High School upper g ymnasium. Tickets are $15 per person. Class representatives can accept payments, if they so choose, for their class. Payments can also be mailed to Newton Alumni Association, PO Box 623, Newton, Iowa, 50208. Koni Bunse, vice-president of the Newton Alumni Association, said the annual class reunion brings everyone together. It is a true party atmosphere and almost feels like a big family reunion at times. Bunse said the familiarity and “common cause of Cardinals” makes people feel like relatives. “It’s a homecoming,” Bunse said. “…It’s nice to touch base again and to see friends again and to find out how they’re doing and what they’re doing and hear about their kids and grandkids and great-grandkids. Our lives have changed, but we remain Cardinals. We’re forever Cardinals.”
Other ways to compete In addition to golf tournament, Newton Fest has dodgeball and pickleball competitions Sports fanatics and casual competitors will also have other chances to get sporty at Newton Fest this year. In addition to the Jack Chadwick Golf Tournament held June 11 at Westwood Golf Course, organizers of Newton Fest will be offering a pickleball tournament from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 11 and June 12 at Aurora Park and a dodgeball tournament at 3 p.m. June 11 in Maytag Park. The two-day pickleball tournament is organized by the Newton YMCA. The fee is $40 per team. The round robin play tournament has medals for first, second and third place. Teams will be seeded based on performance in the round robin play. All matches will be best of three. For questions, call 641-792-4006. You don’t have to dodge a wrench to play in this dodgeball tournament. Teams of six in two age divisions (ages 12-17 and ages 18 and up) will be competing in the tennis courts of Maytag Park. The single-elimination tournament is sponsored by the City of Newton’s community services department. Prizes will be distributed for first, second and third place teams, as well as a special trophy for the “best dressed” team. But if walking or running isn’t your thing either, there is always a great stay-
in-one-place workout waiting for you at Maytag Park. Morning Yoga at the Bowl will be held 9 to 10 a.m. June 11. The free session will be led by Rachel Braafhart, and it is open to all skill levels. Bring a yoga mat! “It is easy to feel rushed in a weekend packed with events, activities and gatherings,” Braafhart told Newton News. “Yoga reminds us to slow down, be present and enjoy the moment. Memories aren’t made when you are in a hurry.” Danielle Rogers, community marketing manager for the City of Newton, said there are so many ways to be active in the community that are showcased at Newton Fest. “So having events such as a free community pool party, the beer run that Gezellig Brewing Company is hosting, as well as yoga at Maytag Bowl, the Newton YMCA’s pickleball tournament at Aurora Park and the Newton Alumni Association’s golf tournament at Westwood Golf Course make sense,” Rogers said.

GET READY FOR A GOLF OUTING Newton Alumni Weekend’s golf tournament brings Cardinal fellowship By Christopher Braunschweig Newton News For the past three years, Newton alumni have returned to their hometown to participate in a golf tournament named after a renowned coach. The Jack Chadwick Best Shot Golf Tournament makes its return to Alumni Weekend this year, and the event will include two separate tee-offs for participating teams. The first round of flights will be held 8 a.m. June 11 at Westwood Golf Course, and the second round will begin at 1 p.m. If there is rain, the event will be moved to June 12. Lunch will be provided. Teams of four cost $300, or $75 per person paid on the day of the event. Call 641-792-3087 to reserve a spot. If there are not enough teams to make two flights — a full flight is 18 teams — then there will only be one flight at 1 p.m. The Jack Chadwick Golf Tournament was officially created in 2019. Several former Cardinals were already scheduling golf outings during the annual Newton Alumni Weekend, so it made sense to play to those golfers’ interests. While folks are smacking the ball across the green, they’re catching up with old friends. Who is Jack Chadwick? To most Cardinals he was known as “Coach,” on and off the greens. Chadwick led the high school golf team to two state championships and 12 conference titles and was twice nominated for National Golf Coach of the Year, according to the Iowa High School Coaches Association. Ed Ergenbright, the former head football coach and longtime educator at Newton High School, organized the tourney in Chadwick’s honor. The same year the tournament launched was also

the same year Chadwick was recognized at the NHS Hall of Fame ceremony. “We really need to honor Coach Chadwick,” Ergenbright said in 2019. “So I decided that I would take responsibility for organizing the tournament. I bounced my idea off the other members and they thought it was a great idea … I know a lot of his former players have heard about it and decided to come back and play.” Chadwick died on April 1, 2021, at
the age of 81. Despite his passing, his passion for coaching and golf lives on in his student athletes, who have, in part, taught their children the same game. Loved ones said Chadwick’s passion for the game is contagious, and there is no denying that. The alumni association memorializes the beloved coach’s legacy with this yearly tournament, which champions competition and fellowship among Cardinals.
Koni Bunse, vice-president of the Newton Alumni Association, said Chadwick was such a big part in Cardinals’ lives. Bunse said Chadwick was able to attend the first year the association held the tournament. He just beamed, she said, and was so genuinely touched to have a golf tournament named after him. “That was what it was all about,” Bunse said. “We just wanted to honor him as a teacher and coach.”
