Newton Fest set to celebrate all things Newton June 11-14 By Jessica Lowe Special to Newton Daily News When snow covered the ground and the temperature was still falling, a group of citizens gathered to discuss creating an event to celebrate Newton for summer 2015. Fast forward five months and Newton Fest, a four-day event with dozens of activities, is a reality set to begin Thursday. “The purpose of Newton Fest is to bring the whole community together for a fun celebration of everything people love about Newton, Iowa,” said Natalie Umsted, a Newton Fest organizer. “In planning this weekend, one of the things that was very important to our committee was making Newton Fest an event to
be enjoyed by all ages of all interests. There are sporting events, live music, kids’ activities, teen activities, historic events — I really think everyone could find something to celebrate at Newton Fest.” Historically, the second weekend in June has been known as Alumni Weekend in Newton. Alumni Weekend is a time when hundreds of Newton High School graduates return to their alma mater for the all-class get-together, brunch and individual class reunions. For the past 13 years, the Iowa Sculpture Festival also has taken place and often coincides with alumni activities drawing in artists and art lovers from around the country. The two events served as cornerstones for
the development of the larger celebration. “Traditionally, this weekend already had some great time-tested events like the Sculpture Fest and the alumni activities. We wanted to build upon those successes and add even more events to the lineup,” said Nathan Unsworth, who is helping coordinate Newton Fest. Organizers said the weekend will not only feature the popular longtime events but also feature a variety of live music, family-friendly activities, retail sales, food, historic programs and more. The additional events have been added through collaboration with Iowa Sculpture CELEBRATE | 5

Celebrate Continued from Page 3 Festival organizers, Weekend Pit Stop/Thunder Nites committee, Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, Newton Alumni Association, along with local businesses and civic organizations. “Throughout the weekend, we are highlighting the arts, schools, parks, downtown businesses and more,” Unsworth said. “We also want this event to give people the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy time with fellow citizens, alumni and visitors.” The kickoff to the inaugural weekend celebration is “Lemonade in the Shade,” a concert featuring the Des Moines-based band Boomerang on Thursday. The concert sponsored by Black Hills Energy will start at 6 p.m. at the historic Maytag Bowl. Newton Fest will be in full swing Friday. Events include alumni author reception at 4 p.m. at the Newton Library, and a teen pool party for seventh- and eighth-grade students from 6-9 p.m. at Maytag Pool. The Newton Alumni Associations allclass reunion is set for 6 p.m. at Iowa Speedway. Maytag Dairy Farms will feature special tasting and tours on both Friday and Saturday. Saturday is jam-packed with events for all ages and interests. Festivities kick off at 8 a.m. with The Birds & The Bees Fun Run to benefit the Newton Arboretum. Also starting at 8 a.m. is Hy-Vee’s Healthy You Mobile Event. Activities at Hy-Vee are scheduled until 2 p.m. with everything from children’s programs to yoga classes, and health screenings to a well-

ness walk. Starting at 8 a.m. is Ridiculous Day, a long-standing summer tradition for the downtown. The Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ridiculous Day, which had been scheduled for July, was moved to Newton Fest weekend to help promote businesses and fun during the community celebration. Chamber sponsored events on Saturday include a car show, carriage rides and retail specials at local businesses. “After consulting with our members and getting

For Cardinals, Newton Alumni Association will host its second annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as part of the annual all-class brunch beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at NHS. The ceremony is a time to honor alumni who have left an indelible mark on their community and the world at large. Organizers of the 13th Annual Iowa Sculpture Festival, one of the state’s premiere art events, have added family-friendly activities to their schedule. The first day of the festival will include a community art project, caricature artists and more, all located at the DMACC Newton campus from 1-4 p.m. Newton Fest organizers have been busy coordinating new activities to enhance the existing events. Added for Saturday, at 11 a.m. food vendors will be selling everything from pickles to pork chops, ice cream to gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. Newton Police and Newton Fire departments will host an open house and Safety Day with tours, free hot dogs, along with fire trucks, police cars and the Mercy One helicopter on display also at 11 a.m. The Newton Fest Kids Zone was created to offer free, family fun for all ages and is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. at DMACC in Newton. Sponsored by Alliant Energy & Black Hills Energy Hometown Rewards, Kids Zone will have free bounce houses, an obstacle course and activities to learn about energy efficiency. Celebrate Continued from Page 5 The events include a historic photo display, reenactments of influential Newtonians, tours of the historic Jasper County Courthouse and a special reception in the courthouse rotunda. The Historic District Celebration is hosted by the Newton Historic Preservation Committee. Beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday, downtown Newton will be the site of seven hours of live music thanks to City of Newton — a title sponsor, First Newton National Bank and Forbes Office Supplies — both platinum sponsors, along with 18 local businesses and organization. Local favorite JJ Express takes the stage at 4 p.m., followed by “Nearly Elvis” Ron Semler at 6 p.m. The night will be capped off with 3D In Your Face at 8 p.m. The Nebras-

ka-based hair metal band will perform during the street dance hosted by Young Professionals of Jasper County. The Spinal Tap-esque performance will feature pyrotechnics. In conjunction to the live music, a beer garden, hosted by the American Legion Newton Post 111, will open at 4 p.m. All three concerts are free and open to fans of music of all ages. “I am most looking forward to the live music on Saturday afternoon and evening. The band that is booked for the street dance — 3D In Your Face — looks like they will be a lot of fun,” Umsted said. Sunday rounds out the weekend with the final day of Iowa Sculpture Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the final Newton Fest show of Newton Community Theatre’s “Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” which has
performances each day of the celebration. Iowa Sculpture Festival A love of nature brought to life through sculpture artist Shaklee
By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The 13th Annual Iowa Sculpture Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday in the climatecontrolled venue on the Newton DMACC Campus located at 600 N. Second Ave. W. More than 25 artists from around the Midwest will be featuring their works of art for the public to view as well as to be judged for six awards. “This is the first year ever that we will have juried two dimensional art,” event coordinator Linda Klepinger said “The emphasis is still on sculpture. We are still a small show

but we are a distinctive show, high quality.” The purpose and goal of the Iowa Sculpture Festival is to celebrate the development and growth of sculpture as an ultimate art form and to feature artists who create it. It begins Saturday at 10 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. with judging taking place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Artists will be up for the Best of Show award with first place taking a $2,000 prize. Also, the Memorial Awards, Awards of Merit and People’s Choice Award will be distributed. Also Saturday, a special family art time will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday the festival opens up at 10 a.m. with the event wrapping up at 4 p.m. “We always have young people art creations but this year there is going to be a family art tent outside. People are going to create a mosaic wall for the Centre for Arts and Artist for the new gift shop gallery,” Klepinger said. Artists at the festival include: Martha Aldridge, David Belitz, Margaret Caldwell, Penny Christensen, Russ Christensen, Art Ciccotti, Jonathan Curiel and Mary Tiso, Herman Deaton, Ron Dinsdale, Phylis Garner, Teresa Hansen, Judd Hoskins, Nick Klepinger, Wayne Kolstad, Laura Lengeling, Marilyn Marsh, Karen Neppl, Elizabeth Ritter, Dale Roark, Nancy Sams, Kim Shaklee, Kimberly Shinn, Eric Stearns, Marilyn Terlouw and Heather Whittlesey. “Truly the diversity of the show and approaches to the mediums are absolutely outstanding,” Klepinger said. “Of the 13 years we’ve been having this 10 of the artist are first timers with lots of surprises. The range of diversity are top flight.” Authors Carson and Connie Ode who wrote “Celebrate Iowa” and “IOWA—Spaces, Places, Faces” will be attending the festival along with emerging artist Collin Ferguson and exhibitor Kevin Korte. Demonstrations will be given by Rick Stewart and Jaci Thomassen. The art is available to purchase with price ranges for everyone, Klepinger said. The funds collected will go toward the operation of the Iowa Sculpture Festival’s year round education effort. Returning artist Kim Shaklee did not start sculpting until she was an adult but always had art as a part of her life. The family grew up in Denver and spent many summers and weekends throughout the year at her family’s summer home located within Rocky Mountain State Park just outside of Estes Park, Colo. She majored in Forestry and Natural Resources at Colorado State University and at that time never thought art would be a career for her. “Always intrigued by nature, the
abundance of wildlife that frequented our mountain property cultivated a deep foundation for my desire to become a wildlife sculptor. There was always something new and exciting to research,” Shaklee said. After attending a horse show in 1987 and being consumed with a lifelike bronze sculpture of a horse on display, she felt a life changing connection and desire to become a sculptor. “I primarily do bronze sculpture, though I have done and enjoy stone sculpting. I have also done some work in oil and watercolor, as well as
stained glass, jewelry and photography. My subject preferences are quite broad in scope,” Shaklee said. “I enjoy doing very smooth works with beautiful line quality. The smoother the finish, the more enticing for me, and others to touch.” Shaklee’s sculpture “International Harvester” was a part of a previous Iowa Sculpture Festival and found a permanent home at Maytag Park. The sculpture, nick-named “Harvey,” is in honor of the late Ann Krumm, who was a major benefactor and supporter of the arts. Funds for the piece came from donations of Krumm’s
friends and prefer to call it “Ann’s Wild Hare.” The sculpture is made of bronze and is located at near the pool entrance. “Children and adults seem to equally love this sculpture. The rabbit exudes personality, including a bit of arrogance about him,” Shaklee said. This is the third trip to the Iowa Sculpture Festival for Shaklee and she has only positive things to say about her time here previously. “My experiences were very pleasant and welcoming. I found the show is very friendly and organized, and the people are delightful,” Shaklee said.
Ridiculous Day moves to Newton Fest By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News In conjunction with Newton Fest, the Newton Chamber of Commerce’s Ridiculous Day and “Cool Cars ‘round the Courthouse” car show are planned for Saturday. Tour the square for bargains from
vendors and downtown businesses starting at 8 a.m. and running through out the day. “The Newton Fest Ridiculous Day is all about supporting and promoting our Newton Chamber members and our hometown business community,” Chamber Executive Director Craig Light said.
“Ridiculous Day begins at 8 a.m. with incredible bargains. Food and other vendors will also be part of the festivities.” For only $2 guests can also take a horse and carriage ride courtesy of Plume Hill Carriage. The rides will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. After grabbing lunch, head

Two awards will be given at the car show including Entrants Choice and Spectator’s Choice. Best of Show plaques

Newton to show off historic downtown during festival Events begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at County Courthouse By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Last fall, Newton’s downtown business district earned a prestigious distinction of becoming the 13th listing for Jasper County in the National Register of Historic Places. During this weekend’s Newton Fest celebration, there will be events to commemorate
this historic designation. At 1 p.m. Saturday, a celebration will commence at the Jasper County Courthouse. The celebration will include a presentation, old photographs, a tour of the courthouse, dramatic interpretations and a reception. Larry Hurto, the chair of the Newton Historic Preservation Commission, said the
event will partly serve as a reminder of how far the city has come in its quest to preserve its history — and it will outline the importance of the work that lies ahead. “This will be both a chance to celebrate, and to see what will still need to preserve,” Hurto said. HISTORIC | 13

Historic Continued from Page 11 The directional boundaries for Newton’s historic Downtown Business District are as far east as East Fourth Street and as far west as West Third Street. The northern boundary is just north of North Second Avenue and the southern boundary is the alley south of First Avenue. However, the Jasper County Courthouse will be the center of Saturday’s events. Hurto will begin with a onehour talk about a display of photos taken by Frederick Clifford, the teenage son of Charles Clifford. “What makes this outstanding collection of early Newton images remarkable is the fact that the artist who snapped the shutter was only about 15 years old,” Hurto said. “Think about the tripod and how laborious photography was in those days.” Hurto said about 30 such photos were published in the June 25, 1884 issue of The Newton Journal, a Republican weekly newspaper. The photos will remain on display until 4 p.m. in

the courthouse. In the meantime, other events are slated. At 2:15 p.m., a 45-minute dramatic recreation called “Reenactments of Influential Newtonians” will take place at the courthouse. Three actresses and two actors will play various roles from Newton’s rich history, in costume. Olive Jane Lamb will be portrayed by Linda Dougan, Frances Neel Lynn will be portrayed by Tammy Sposeto, Fred Maytag will be portrayed by Lonnie Appleby, Theodore Fehleisen will be portrayed by John Dougan, and Vernon W. Skiff will be portrayed by Frank Sposeto. Sue Buekema is helping the actors assemble their early20th-century costumes. Winonah McGee wrote the scripts, based on information provided by preservation commission. At about the same time actors are getting ready for the first performance, a separate activity will be starting up. Jasper County Board of Supervisors Chairman Denny Carpenter will conduct a tour of the courthouse, which has had its own entry in the National Register of Historic Places since 1981. The courthouse construction began
in 1909 and was completed in 1911, so it is one of several Newton buildings that are more than 100 years old. At about 3:15 p.m., Carpenter will start the tour from the beginning, and the re-enactment performance will be repeated. At 4 p.m., a reception will be held in the courthouse rotunda. Hurto said he expects to see a presence at the reception from the Newton Convention & Visitors Bureau and other organizations at the reception. “This really has turned into a large celebration,” Hurto said. “This is a great chance for us to get the word out about how much work has been done to maintain our history.” Hurto said the preservation commission took trips to places such as Winneshiek County, which has 31 items in the national registry. The national registry designation makes property owners within it to qualify for specific grants and tax credits. These funds can be used to help maintain the “mid-century modern architecture” motif seen in much of the area. “I’m a 19th-century guy myself,”
Hurto said, referring to the era of American architecture that he enjoys the most. “But that’s the criteria for the national designation: to stay true to the sort of 1950s-era construction ideas.” The commission includes Hurto, the chair; Mary Jo Niskin, who is vice chair; Rita Reinheimer, who is the project manager and representative to Newton Main Street; Fred Chabot and Sue Smith. Hurto said the Newton Main Street program, along with its executive director, Andrew Bassman, have both been extremely helpful to the commission’s goals. Newton High School Alumni Association By Mark D. Hallam NHS Alumni Association The Newton High School Alumni Association has promoted the tradition of what we now call Red Pride since 1882. The Association, a voluntary social fellowship, was founded by early graduates with Emerson Hough as the first president. One of our greatest responsibilities is to organize and promote Reunion Weekend. But that’s far from all the NHS Alumni Association does to promote Red Pride. • We write and publish the 24-page magazine ALUMNI NEWS twice per year, completely devoted to the activities and accomplishments of current and future Newton alumni. • We provide a scholarship to a graduating NHS senior each year who is the son or daughter of Newton alumni. • We organize and sponsor the All-Classes Open House and Reunion, the annual All-Classes Brunch and Social at Newton High School, and host the Newton High School Hall of Fame. Our magazine, scholarship program, and outreach efforts are funded entirely through membership dues and donations. Newton High School Hall of Fame 2015 The 2015 Newton High School Hall of Fame class will be inducted Saturday at the Newton Alumni Association’s annual All-Classes Brunch. Joining the NHS Hall of Fame are: Chuck Jarnigan, 1950, athletics; Joanne Jackson, 1955, fine arts; James Tiedje, 1960, science; Tom Starr, 1965, business; Buzz Levick, athletics/education; and John Jenkins, athletics/education. Buzz Levick Among other leadership roles at NHS, Levick was head men’s basketball coach and led the Cardinals to two back-to-back state championships. He has been inducted into the IHSSA Hall of Fame and the Wartburg College Hall of Fame. At the time of his induction at Wartburg, he was one of only 65 coaches in the nation to have won 500 games or more. John Jenkins Coach Jenkins is the winningest football coach in Cardinal history, with an overall 143-41 record and two state championship finals. In 2002, he was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year and received the National College Football Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

Chuck Jarnagin, 1950 Chuck was an outstanding Cardinal at Newton High School and was named the state of Iowa’s No. 1 forward by the Des Moines Register during his senior year. A Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences at Michigan State University, he is a microbial ecologist and internationally recognized for his research on microbial processes.

Tom Starr, 1965 Starr has more than 28 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics management. In 2014, he became the first sports executive to have been executive director of three individual bowl games: the Sun Bowl, the Freedom Bowl and the Fort Worth Bowl. Park Centre... My name is Andrea Jensen. I grew up in Newton and my dad worked for Maytag. My mother broke her arm and needed skilled nursing care and subsequent care in assisted living. We chose Park Centre. My mother’s care has been the best care that could possibly be provided. The staff are obviously carefully screened for their loving personalities. If there was more time, I could tell you stories about the wonderful care my mother has experienced at Park Centre. The facilities are bright, superbly clean, spacious and well kept. Mom needed x-rays but it was not problem, there is a tunnel to Skiff Hospital. The food is also well chosen and my mother really loved her meals. Park Centre Administration is also focused on customer service and very accommodating. My mother recovered and returned to her home.
