OF ‘BIG BAD BUDGET BATTLE’ AND ‘THE PIONEER WOMAN ON FOOD NETWORK In terms of inexpensive ingredients, what are your goto’s for staples?
Well, I’ve always in my show been a real fan of looking for deals that you can buy in bulk, whether it’s a huge family pack of chicken thighs or even packages of meats, proteins that are a day or two away from needing to go, they mark them down, you can buy a family pack of 36 chicken thighs sometimes. And then the second I get home I break them down, package them into smaller portions and freeze. And so that’s my favorite trick, is to kind of find the deals on proteins.

Frozen vegetables are also a whole lot more convenient.
Well, if you make a broccoli cheese soup, for instance, nobody really knows once the soup is done if it’s been fresh broccoli or frozen. So over the years, you find the things – you know, some things you have to use fresh but when you don’t, having those frozen options are so great.

“McEnroe” premieres Sunday on Showtime.
And then another thing I’m a fan of is frozen vegetables. They aren’t fresh but they’re the next-best thing to fresh. So things like broccoli florets and green beans and even frozen onions and peppers mixtures that you can get now. So we can’t all go to a farmers’ market or a farm stand every other day so it’s really great to have things on hand like that. And I’m a huge fan of the freezer (laughs).
