Though “Chesapeake Shores” is now in its last of six seasons, do you think this is really the end for the saga?
We’ve all talked about the possibility one day of doing a O’Brien-family movie, which I think would be a wonderful thing. I can’t speak for Hallmark, but I know that there’s hope on the part of our extraordinary writers to do stories that would take each of the couples to the next stage of their lives. That’s all wishful thinking, though. Right now, we’re focused on having as many people as possible watch this season. To speak of one of your earlier series, can you talk about your special relationship with your young co-star Vivien Cardone while filming “Everwood”?
My children were all of 4 and 8, and I went to Utah by myself and tried to get home to the kids when I could. She also was apart from her family, and she was 7 years old. I went to her and said, “Listen, I’ll be your dad for the run of the show if you’ll be my kid.” The hardest part of what we do, I think, is being away from our families for long periods of time. And she and I are still very close.

You’ve done so much work in the police genre, from the movie “Prince of the City” to your recurring role on “Blue Bloods” and your part in the recent limited series “We Own This City,” do you enjoy maintaining that connection?
It was really wonderful when they sent me “We Own This City.” It was almost full-circle, like (the “Prince of the City” character) Danny Ciello retired now and looking back on the corruption that was going on. I thought that once that story was exposed, it would all be over, but it’s cyclical. If you don’t keep an eye on it, the corruption starts again, and then you have to stop it again.
