Newton native Jeremy Heaberlin, a former member of Newton’s city council and school board, has announced that he is running for the Jasper County Board of Supervisors. Heaberlin is running as a Republican and is one of four candidates — Joe Brock, Dennis Carpenter and Jason Webster are the others — vying for the two open seats on the board. “(If elected) changes I would
like to make would be more of a focus on … getting out there and making Jasper County more of a name,” Heaberlin said. “Advertising it — putting it on the top of the list for anybody looking for new developments (and) anybody that wants to invest, not just going through the motions and keeping the county running. “I think, honestly, the current supervisors have done a good job, but I think so much more can be done.” HEABERLIN See Page 5A

Ty Rushing/Daily News The Jasper County Historical Museum has retooled a number of things to prepare for its opening for the 2014 season. One of the most prominent changes took place with how the museum displays its collection of washing machines, which range from a number of former Jasper County manufactures.

“The biggest changes we’ve made involve the washing machines, because they are a dominant part of the museum, just like they were a dominate part of Jasper County back in the day,” Barthelman said. “We formally had all the Automatic (Electric Washer Company) and non-Maytag (washers) in one area kind of mixed together.”
Newton has been growing and changing in the past few years, with new initiatives and plans in the works for the city. To teach their students about communities and why the newspaper serves as an important part of the community, the Thomas Jefferson Elementary School third-grade co-teaching team of Megan Frehse and Lucinda Sinclair decided to introduce their students to their local newspaper. “We went through each part of the paper, explaining the different parts of the paper, explaining the purpose behind each section and how it serves the community and why it’s important,” Sinclair said. The class also had a chance to interview Newton Daily News Senior Staff Writer Ty Rushing, who said he was excited about the opportunity to be a part of the event at TJ. “I thought it was wonderful,” Rushing said. “I am all about promoting journalism, and instilling the love of journalism in people at a young age is a great thing. It was great to see them get involved and respecting the newspaper.” Rushing was asked many questions, including what story was his favorite to write and which school is his favorite. “I didn’t give a straight answer to [the favorite school question] because that is a hard question because I love all of my schools equally,” Rushing said.

By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer While you can’t change history itself, you can change the way it’s presented. Today, the Jasper County Historical Museum is opening for the 2014 season, and Ken Barthelman, the new executive director, has helped implemented a few changes in some of the museum’s exhibits and displays.
