Prepping for the holidays Local shop owners get in the holiday spirit months before the seasonal goods hit the store Crisp, brisk air and sparkling frost signal the start of the holiday season each year. But for local shop owners, preparing for their busiest months began well before the first holly was hung. Finding out the up-and-coming trends, purchasing the perfect holiday gifts and staging their stores is a yearlong process to help make shoppers get in the holiday spirit while searching for the perfect gifts. “Most of my income comes in November and December so I do have to do the prep work beforehand to make that happen,” The Farmer’s Wife own-
er Bonnie Terpstra said. “It is a lot of work and my storage is up the stairs but you have to do it to make the reward.” Terpstra’s store on the northwest corner of Newton’s downtown is transformed into a holiday wonderland, a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. But she doesn’t wait until the end of summer work on the holidays, it’s a process that kicks off just as the last holiday season wraps up. “For looking, it’s always right after Christmas. I’ll go to market in January and order most of it there,” Terp-
stra said. “You can kind of see what is trending in all of the show rooms. I have my favorites that I like to buy from. Also, what’s trending, what sold well for me the past Christmas. Things change and evolve and you’ve got to move with the new colors or whatever they come up with on the designs.” Market can be in Dallas, Las Vegas, Atlanta or many other large cities across the country. Stacy Barney from Fine Things on the south side of downtown Newton said owner Julia Prendergast is always prepping for

Get to know: Danielle Rogers Newton’s community marketing manager is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to they city’s public image Tell us a little about yourself: I grew up on a farm in southwest Minnesota near Worthington, Minn. (which is about 45 minutes from Lake Okoboji to give folks an Iowa reference point). I was super involved in 4-H and FFA growing up — even to the point of serving as a regional vice president in the Minnesota FFA organization and as a 4-H camp counselor for a few summers. with the Des Moines Buccaneers, which turned into my first full-time job, and the City of Clive, which is where the seeds of local government were nurtured. Monroe bus driver creates holiday joy by whittling Santas out of pencils, rolling pins Dale Vander Linden has a different kind of Christmas tradition. While others are decorating gingerbread houses, baking seasonal treats or spiking cups of egg nog with a shot of rum, the 82-year-old Monroe man spends his time leading up to the holidays in his shop, whittling away at pieces of wood until a familiar face appears on the surface. If the rosy cheeks, plump nose, strong brow and long beard don’t give it away, the red hat should: it’s Santa Claus, of course. For the past 25 years, Vander Linden has been
carving Saint Nick from balsa, basswood or any other type of wood he can get his hands on — even pencils, and, most recently, rolling pins. Several of the rolling pins were purchased by Mike and Cindy Sell, who own the upcycled decor store Farmhouse Creation in Newton. The pieces have since been put up for sale. Vander Linden said it might be the first time or few times he has ever been paid for his creations. Oftentimes he just gives them away. A bus driver for the PCM Community School District, Vander Lin-
den has frequently gifted his handcarved pencils featuring Santa and other festive characters like Frosty the Snowmanto students around the holidays. Sometimes he’ll even give the kids two-dollar bills on their birthdays. Both kids and adults get “tickled” whenever they get a hold of his creations, Vander Linden said. “He makes them for me every year for my students,” PCM teacher and Vander Linden’s daughter Angie Landgrebe said. “It is exciting

O’ SO MANY CHRISTMAS TREES Jasper County Museum uses its historical backdrops to display almost 200 Christmas trees Christmas comes early at the Jasper County Historical Museum. By the time children begin writing down their wish lists for Santa, and before their parents deck out the home with colorful light displays, the volunteers of the local museum will have already decorated more than 175 trees throughout the facility. Historical artifacts and displays unique to the region serve as a backdrop for the Tree-mendous Christmas Experience, a new holiday tradition founded by the board members of the museum. With boxes upon boxes of holiday decorations at their disposal, volunteers spend months preparing for this important fundraiser. Dave Rorabaugh, a longtime board member, said it takes about five months to get all the trees decorated. Volunteers go all out to make sure every nook and cranny in the museum is filled with holiday ornaments and decorations,
and to do that takes time. Like last year, they began working on the event in August. With aspirations to improve the holiday-inspired event this year, Rorabaugh said the museum mailing more flyers and attempting to reach more families outside of Jasper County. Ultimately, the event serves as a fundraiser for the museum and is also a way for families to enjoy themselves during the holidays. The museum unveiled the inaugural Tree-mendous Christmas Experience last year, to great success. Larry Hurto, a volunteer for the museum, said more than 1,000 people visited the event,
which was supported by 33 sponsors. Organizers are aiming for at least 40 sponsors and even more visitors than before. “We had people come in from out of town, out of county, out of state,” Hurto said. “But what really tickled us — and this is contrary to what our purpose was — is people tried to look behind the trees at some of the displays. There were people that had never been here before or it had been years.” Community response to the event was well-received, too. Several people had even donated their old trees and decorations leading up to the inaugural event, and that has since continued into the second year. Hurto could not believe the turnout of last year, particularly when traffic was backed up. “People have come out of the woodwork just because of the that magic that is

the holidays, finding different pieces throughout the year. “She does go to market and she has companies that she uses,” Barney said. “Most shows for any store will be spring and winter.” Along with purchasing items from outside companies, Stephanie Moran owner and designer at Silverado Jewelry, makes her own products, an ongoing project as the trends evolve. “The year before, we will make notes of things we want to do differently for the following year, what we want to buy, what we want to look for. Then, a couple of months ago actually buying things and figuring out how we are going to decorate and position things,” Moran said. “We get inspiration from different influencers, trying to see what the market in going towards. We want to have the right colors, right fit, the right textures, that is all important to us.” Once the products are secured, getting the store ready is the next big task. Shoppers who might want to start decorating their own house begin to look for pieces before the holidays start, giving shop owners the opportunity to begin teasing what is coming for the season.
“I always start decorating Oct. 1 because I have large store,” Terpstra said. “I start at the back and move forward. Each section has a different theme. We have the farmhouse, the kitchen area, a black, white and silver and the front is usually a lot of sparkle and glam that Christmas comes with.” Terpstra hinted at trends flowing in a boho direction incorporating a lot of wood tones and naturals for the upcoming season. Of course, the traditional reds and greens can also be found through each store, too. “We try to hold back a little bit ... once we get into the first of November, within the next couple of weeks everything will be out,” Barney said. “We’ll be good and prepared by then.” By mid-November, shops are completely transformed to winter wonderlands, filled with holiday cheer and plenty of goodies to keep patrons busy. With several shopping weekends offering specials and deals along with extra activities in the downtown, shop owners are eager to welcome the hundreds of shoppers looking to celebrate throughout the holiday months. “It is so incredible the support we get from the community,” Moran said. “It is indescribable.” — Jamee A. I was commuting from West Des Moines to Newton for about a year when my apartment lease was set to end and I decided that spending two hours in the car each day wasn’t a good use of my time. I had started building relationships, making friends and getting involved in the community — and realized that Newton was becoming home. What is your position at the city and what are your responsibilities? I’m the community marketing manager for the City of Newton; and the list of my responsibilities is long. I’m a marketer, communicator, advertiser, writer, editor, graphic designer, storyteller, social media manager, webmaster, event planner and brand coordinator … just to name a few of my responsibilities. An easy way to summarize it — anytime you see something with the Get to Know Newton logo on it — I’ve probably been a part of the project in some way, shape or form. No two days are ever alike. What are some exciting things you’ve done through your job? I always enjoying getting to speak about social media, communications, marketing and local government; I’ve done so at several conferences in Iowa over the last couple of years. Sharing with other local government employees how they can engage and communicate with their communities is always rewarding. One of my favorite projects has been the videos that we have done; ranging from recruiting for the Newton Fire Department, explanations about the Newton Sanitary Landfill to shopping to support our down-
town businesses during the holiday shopping seasons. It’s always exciting to be behind the scenes and see our community’s story come to life on a screen. Being a part of the 2018 Newton RAGBRAI Committee was life changing. Not sure if I’ll ever get to be part of such a dedicated, passionate group of individuals who helped make our overnight stay such a success. What is challenging about your job? Everything is a challenge. It’s not easy communicating in today’s day and age – people’s attention spans are short and pulled in so many different directions. But I love trying to figure it out! It’s also challenging to get people involved in local government; I’m a huge advocate for civic engagement. I do my best to put the pieces into place — but can’t always get people to put the puzzle together or understand how all the pieces fit together. You want to make a difference? You need to come to public meetings, attend open houses, vote in local elections and be an informed member of your community. I’m always willing to engage in respectful dialogue and conversations about how they can make this community better. What are areas of your job people probably don’t know you handle? I serve in the public information officer role for the City of Newton, so I talk with the local and regional media when necessary. Mostly when the emergency operations center for the city or Jasper County Emergency Management Agency is activated for large scale events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, August 2020 derecho or the March 2022 tornado. I also spend time working with our economic development partners on
a variety of projects where my focus is usually on tourism and visitors. I keep in touch with the Iowa Tourism Office and represent the city at different meetings, special projects and events. What else are you involved in throughout the county and state? Professionally, I am an active member of the Government Social Media Professional Association, the City-County Communications & Marketing Association and Engaging Local Government Leaders organization. Locally, I volunteer some of my time with Newton Main Street and the Newton Community School District’s master planning exploration team. I spent about five years on the United Way of Jasper County Board of Directors, six years on the Drake University Central Iowa Regional Advisory Board and almost seven years as a judge for the Iowa First Lego League programs through Iowa State University College of Engineering. What do you like to do in your free time? I spend what little free time doing things that make me happy. Whether it’s going to Iowa Wild hockey games, attending shows at the Des Moines Performing Arts Center or traveling to new places with my best friends. I try to see my family as often as I can (I have seven nieces and nephews ranging in age from just over a year old to almost 14 years old). I love how much the Legacy Plaza area has changed since I’ve moved to town. So I try to get friends together to enjoy the food trucks and craft beer, as well as the different events that happen in the courtyard. I’m also a bit of a coffee addict, book lover and podcast fan as well.

because some kids will say, ‘my brother has one of these,’ then they are excited that they get one.” Vander Linden picked up carving after visiting a vendor in Des Moines who was selling a wooden cowboy for $75. But he thought that price tag was a little too steep. So when Vander Linden returned home, he bought himself a set of carving knives and whittled his own cowboy, a statue he still keeps in his living room. “It was the first thing I ever carved,” he said. “And that got me started. Then I started doing some pencils and people seemed to like them. So I made a whole bunch of ‘em. This year I think someone took about 80 pencils I had. I gave up 25 or 30 to my daughter who teaches school down here (in Monroe).” Throughout the year he’ll also carve cowboys, firefighters or whatever else he feels like. But by the time his collection grows, Vander Linden has found people to give his carvings to. His wife, he said, gets first dibs. But his children also have a knack for taking a few of their dad’s
creations to add to their collections. “There’s always somebody that wants them,” Vander Linden said. “I’ve got relatives — nieces and nephews — that collect all the stuff that I’ve made. They’d come over and visit, and they know whenever they come over they get to take something home. If they’re far away and I visit them, I take them to them.” Vander Linden had no intention of becoming a wood carver or showed any real interest in the craft earlier in life. But it wasn’t as if he was unfamiliar with the world of creation. Vander Linden worked as a tool and dye maker at Maytag for more than 20 years of his 38-year run with the company. He remembered the foreman would give him a blue print and a quota, and then turn around and walk away. Vander Linden was confident in his skills to make the foreman exactly what they wanted. When people ask him how he did that, Vander Linden just shrugs his shoulders. “If you got a picture of something, you can make it,” he said. “And if I can see a picture of something, I can carve it.”
Some of his most favorite carvings he keeps for himself, like the Santa made from a cypress knee — which Vander Linden described as a root of a tree that grows out of the swamps of Louisiana. But why Santa? Well not even the artist himself knows the answer to that question.
Although he has no hard feeling about giving away his carvings, there isn’t a single person that has a work of his that Vander Linden wasn’t proud of. He’s “very fussy” about his painting, he said. And if it’s still no good he’ll cut it off and start all over again. “Until I’m happy with it, it ain’t going out the door,” he said. Chances are there are more than a few people in town that have held on to those carved pencils they received when they were kids. Some might still be hanging on their Christmas tree. Until Vander Linden gets tired of making them, he’ll still be making them in his shop and giving them away when he finds time. “As long as it makes them happy — that’s the important thing,” he said. — Christopher Braunschweig

Christmas,” Hurto said. “With our publicity, we want folks to have the sense that it’s a professional looking job. The words that we heard more than any other from a lot of folks was that the display was ‘staggering’ or ‘overwhelming.’” Keeping the community in mind, the volunteers have come up with ways to get residents involved as much as the business sponsors. Diane Dafflitto, secretary of the museum’s board of directors, said a tree near the Herman Deaton diorama will have gold and silver star ornaments featuring departed loved ones’ names. “They’re about 17 inches across. Hopefully we have a light coming through the star so that it’s lit, and then have a name of a person there,” Dafflitto said, noting the silver stars will represent the past directors the museum. “The public will have the rest. It is like the memorial tree we had last year on the second floor.”
The memorial tree was adorned with 40 hand-decorated ornaments and it was used by the public to honor family member or friend who passed away. “It was very popular last year,” Dafflitto said. “This year it’s right off the lobby and it’s a main focal point down there.” Ken Barthelman, executive director of the Jasper County Historical Museum, said the Tree-mendous Christmas Experience also draws attention to museum itself. He hopes when families come through the facility during the holidays that they’ll want to return when the museum is open. “People just have no clue how much we have in here,” he said. “They’ll come in from the north side and the building looks very small. If they don’t go all the way around the corner, they don’t see it’s a two-story building. And it is just packed with Jasper County. We don’t do national stuff. It’s all Jasper County.” Hosting a holiday event shows not
only the community but out-of-town visitors that the museum is not just some building on a corner. “There are things here that they should come see,” Barthelman said. “And the trees are wonderful, too! It’s a great thing to walk in and see all the Christmas trees. It’s inspiring.” Tree-mendous Christmas Experience will be held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from. Dec. 2 to Jan. 1. The museum will be open 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. For group visits, call the Jasper County Historical Museum, 1700 S. 15th Ave. W., at 641-792-9118. It is a $5 entry per person. Children ages 7 and under can enter free. Memorial stars cost $100. Sponsors interested in participating in the event should contact the museum. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards to operation costs of the museum. — Christopher Braunschweig
