New art gallery to open at Old Sandstone Encore! Mt. Morris, a community development group, will open an art gallery in the old Sandstone building at 122 S. Wesley Ave., on the former college campus in Mt. Morris. The first floor gallery will open to the public on Friday, July 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and feature six northern Illinois artists, including local sculptor Jeff Adams and Mt. Morris alum Andria Thorngren Burchett. The gallery will be open 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the following Fridays, July 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5, to capitalize on the Friday night concert crowds and activity on the Mt. Morris village square. According to a press release from the Encore! Mt. Morris Steering Committee, the gallery opening is one of the most visible first steps in Encore! Mt. Morris volunteers’ efforts to develop the community – and in particular the former college campus – into a unique cultural arts center. “We’re building on the strong foundation of Wednesday and Friday night music concerts, the longrunning performing arts group, and local culinary talent that you see at the Friday Farmer’s Market,

for example,” said Steering Committee Chairman Jeff Bold in the press release. “Growing into a recognized arts center is a long-term goal, of course, but we have strong support from local businesses, the Economic Development Group and Mt. Morris Village Board to move forward. We’re very excited about the new gallery space and our first display of fine arts.” The featured artists have a breadth of experience, including exhibitions and awards in their chosen medium, Bold said. IDNR narrows its conservator search By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com Another step was taken in the right direction this week for the restoration of the Black Hawk statue. Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) officials and engineer Amy Lamb Woods met Tuesday morning with two applicants for conservator on the project to repair the iconic monument. The group met at Lowden State Park near Oregon where the 105-year-old statue stands on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River. State Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) said Tuesday that he had spoken with IDNR officials, who told him they have narrowed their search for a new conservator to two candidates and were meeting with them to discuss the project. Woods confirmed Tuesday morning that she was attending the meetings as well. Previous conservator Dr. Andrzej Dajnowski from Conservation of Sculpture & Objects Studio, Forest Park, declined to sign a new contract with the IDNR for this year due to a conflict with Lamb Woods over how to proceed with the repairs. Created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a

tribute to Native Americans, the 50-foot statue draws thousands of visitors each year. It was unveiled and dedicated in 1911. Black Hawk, as it is commonly called, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2009. The effects of time and weather have caused parts of the statue to crumble and fall off. The repair project ground to a halt earlier this year because of state budget woes and the conflict between Lamb Woods and Dajnowski. Demmer assured a group of Oregon residents at a Chamber of Commerce Lunch ’n’ Learn June 21 that he would work with the IDNR to get the project underway again. “I’ll definitely be a strong advocate for Black Hawk,” he said then. Part of the lunch discussion focused on funds raised to repair the statue. The Friends of the Black Hawk Statue, an organization formed approximately seven years ago to develop a plan and raise the funds to have the statue repaired, has raised most of the estimated $900,000 needed. All but $350,000 came from private donations that are being kept in a fund with

which Demmer said still hasn’t happened. “Money for the grant was not included in the stopgap budget [passed June 30],” Demmer said. “We mainly focused on keeping agencies open.” He said grants will be considered in future budget action. “Hopefully, that will happen in the next round — hopefully,” he said. “I’ll see what I can do.”

Ogle County Clerk Laura J. Cook is looking for some help on Election Day. In the last several weeks, she has addressed city councils and village boards all over the county seeking individuals to serve as election judges. Cook said last Friday that judges are often in short supply for the March primary elections and April consolidated elections. “A lot of our election judges are snow birds,” she said. “So for the spring elections we are short.” Being an election judge involves overseeing the procedures at the county’s 32 polling places whenever an election is held. Each of the 52 precincts has its own judges, although several precincts may use the same polling place. They have to be there at 5 a.m. to set things up, stay all day, and then deliver the ballots and voting machines to the courthouse in Oregon after the polls close at 7 p.m. “It’s a long day,” Cook said. “It’s not a very glamorous job, but it’s an important job.” “The election judges who operate the polling places are a very important part of the electoral process,” she said. “These persons are the only contact the county clerk’s

office has with the general public during voting hours, and they’re responsible for administrating the actual voting procedures in each precinct. Without them it would be impossible to conduct an election.” For all the duties and qualifications of an election judge go to the clerk’s website at www.oglecounty.org. Cook said election judges are encouraged to take the training offered for the task. Judge of Election School will be held in late September of early October in time for the Nov. 8 general election. Election judges are not expected to serve without compensation, Cook said, and are paid $100 per election, and $125 if they attended a Judge of Election School. Comments sought for judge candidates By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com The judges in the 15th Judicial Circuit are seeking comments about the nine individuals who have applied for an associate judge vacancy. The 15th Judicial Circuit is comprised of Ogle, Lee, Carroll, Jo Daviess, and Stephenson Counties. Those applying for the vacancy, which will be effective with the retirement of Ogle County Associate Judge Kathleen Kauffmann on Sept. 30, include Constance L. Augsburger, Maria N. AMC cars will tour Oregon area on July 28 Classic AMC cars are coming By Chris Johnson cxjohnson@oglecounty news.com A trip through Oregon on July 28 might bring memories of a classic 1958 song. The song “Beep, Beep” is about a Nash Rambler, which is one model that might be spotted during the American Motors Tour Day. The American Motors Owners Association is holding an international convention in Rockford on July 27-30. A day trip on Thursday, July 28 will bring classic AMC cars from the 1950s through 1980s down Ill. 2 through Byron, Oregon, and Grand Detour. More than 50 cars and their owners are expected take part in the tour.

Spectators are welcome to stop and take photos of the cars and talk with the owners during the tour. The plan is to leave Rockford at 9 a.m. with arrival at Butitta Brothers Automotive in Oregon by 10 a.m. At this point the AMC car owners are free to explore the sights in Oregon or head to Grand Detour to visit the John Deere Historic Site. Lunch for the group will be served by the Oregon Lions Club at Butitta Brothers between noon and 1:30 p.m. Anyone with an AMC car is encouraged to bring out their vehicles to drive along with the group. Membership in AMO is not required to join and drive the route. The AMO convention will feature a full car show with swap meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tebala Shrine, 7910 Newburg Rd., Cherry Valley, on Saturday, July 30.

Spectators are free to stop by view the cars, however to display a AMC car during the Saturday show, membership in AMO is required. A daily membership is available or car owners can purchase a yearly membership. that would swivel to unlock the cap,” said Sherman. “He said the joke was the gas cap cost more that the car itself.” The Gremlin badge was a popular decoration and a 1972 AMC Gremlin is confirmed to be part of the July 28 tour. Matt Woodstrup, who is one of the organizers for the convention, will be driving his green Gremlin and would enjoy talking to any AMC enthusiasts during the tour.

Food and family fun will be the highlights of the newly reinstated Forreston Hometown Days July 22-24. Green Gene, president of the Forreston Area Business Association (FABA), said a Kids Fun Run will at Warnken Park will kick off the event at 6 p.m. Friday, June 22, followed by a 5K Fun Run and Walk at 6:30 p.m. The Forreston Legion Auxiliary will serve food at the park from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Forreston’s Hometown Days festival was formerly held every June, but was discontinued more than a decade ago. “We started it back up this year,” Green said. “It’s a

community effort.” An all-day 3-on-3 basketball tournament will start off Saturday’s activities beginning at 8 a.m. in the junior high parking lot. A craft and vendor show is planned from 8 am to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park. “We already have 28 vendors,” Green said. The Forreston FFA will hold a tractor show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park with a food stand from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. FABA will sponsor a Bouncy House and obstacle course at Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The Miles in Memory (formerly the Rick Hahn Memorial Run) will be Saturday, July 23 at the Byron Forest Preserve, 7993 N. River Road, Byron. Quilt display in Ottawa Turn Down is July 16 - 17 The Reddick Mansion Association is hosting a Vintage Quilt Turn Down on Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the mansion, 100 W. Lafayette St., Ottawa. During the “Turn Down”, vintage quilts are stacked on a bed and, as each quilt is “turned down” and displayed, the unique story of each quilt is told— who made it, when, where and for what reason. Other details of each quilt are also discussed: the fabrics, the stitching, the pattern and its history. Back in early June, the Association made a public request of the community, looking for vintage quilts to be part of the event. “We were very happy with

the people’s generosity, ” said Diane Sanders, president of the Reddick Mansion Association. “We will have 18-20 vintage quilts as part of the Turn Down, including one from Amboy, another for Hennepin, as well as quilts from Ottawa, LaSalle-Peru, and the surrounding local area.” The oldest quilt in the Turn Down, a woven bedspread, is on loan from Edith Alsvig of Ottawa, and was made in 1849. “We know this because the date is actually woven into the bedspread itself ”, said Joyce Kellogg, chairperson of the event and volunteer at the Reddick Mansion. “We will have lovely family heirlooms spanning almost 100 years on display. The most recent quilts were made in the 1940s.” During the presentations,

white gloves will be worn by the volunteers handling the quilts and Lorraine McCallister, vice president of the RMA, and Kellogg will tell the story of each quilt. The Vintage Quilt Turn Downs will be in conjunction with the Illinois Valley Quilters Guild 2016 Quilt Show at Festivities Unlimited that same weekend. After the quilt presentation at the mansion, refreshments will be served. Cost is $5 per person and attendance is limited to 20 people per session in order to insure everyone is able to see the quilts. For more information call the mansion at 814433-6100. All money raised will be used for the maintenance and restoration of the Reddick Mansion.

Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will offer two programs at the in July. Both programs area the Freeport Public Library, 100 E. Douglas St., Freeport The monthly program “Wildlife Wednesday,” will be Monday, July 20 from

10:30 to 11 a.m. The program is geared for children two to seven years old. The theme will be “The Hottest Animals”, with story time followed by an activity. A program called “Beat the Heat” will be Tuesday, July 21 from 1 to 2 p.m.

The Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society will be holding classes for beginners in genealogy starting Wednesday, July 20 at 7 p.m. in the second floor conference room at KSB

Hospital, Dixon. Classes will be held for five consecutive Wednesdays, each lasting about 90 minutes, including time for a question and answer period.

The first class is free. The remaining four classes are open for donations. Light refreshments will be served, and the room is handicapped accessible.

Community blood drive at the Rock River Center on Aug. 1 The Rock River Center will hold a community blood drive on Monday, Aug. 1 from 12 to 6 p.m. at the center, 810 S. 10th St., Oregon. Staff from the Rock River Valley Blood Center will conduct the blood drive. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds, and in general good health to eligible to donate blood.

One in three people will need blood. The Rock River Valley Blood Center needs to collect 1000 units each week to meet area patient needs. Dog training is offered in July Newly established in 2016, the Granny Rose K-9 Enrichment center is up and running. It is located at 613 River Lane, Dixon. The next agility class sessions start July 18, obedience and ring ready novice obedience start July 19. Puppy classes start July 20. The training facility welcomes all breeds and mixes. Classes are offered for all all levels of obedience, household manners, rally, agility, conformation and more. July 5 At 12:30 p.m., police issued a complaint and notice to appear to Carl D. Pitt, 74, Oregon, for theft under $300. Pitt will appear at a later date for this violation. and Washington Streets involving a 2013 GMC driven by Bruin A. Rastello, 22, Manton, Michigan, and a 2006 Freightliner semi driven by John F. Leffelman, 54, Amboy. No citations were issued. Oregon Lions Club installs new officers The Oregon Lions met at Maxson Manor Restaurant, north of Oregon on June 23 for the installation of new officers. Past District Governor Paul Lindstrom introduced each new officer and explained their new responsibility to the club members. Club President on three different occasions. Oregon Lions held its Fathers’ Day Car Show at Oregon Park East on June 19. The large crowd could see 100 vintage cars, each of which have been carefully restored and kept in mint condition by their owners. Perfect weather for Ganymedes vintage base ball The weather was just about perfect for the Oregon Ganymedes vintage base ball club when they hosted The Aurora Town Club at the Chana Museum field on Sunday. A slight breeze and overcast skies helped keep the temperatures in the mid80s as team members field balls amongst trees on the makeshift field, located just south of the historic Chana School. The Ganymedes fell to Aurora 9-7 in what was the first home game for the team this season. The Ganymedes club is mainly comprised of players who graduated from Oregon High School. Some graduates don’t live in Oregon anymore, but come back to play with the team. The Ganymedes will attend the World Tournament of Historic Base Ball event held at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village, located just outside of Detroit in Dearborn, Michigan Aug. 13-14. The Oregon club is one of only 12 vintage teams that will be playing at this year’s base ball history event. There will be teams representing five states (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York). Oregon is the lone team from Illinois.

“This is a very competitive 1867 rules tournament that attracts large crowds of spectators to the Henry Ford Museum,” Ganymedes manager Mark Herman said. “All teams wear authentic vintage uniforms and play by the rules and customs of the times.” Oregon is scheduled to play teams from Detroit, Michigan and Brooklyn, New York on Saturday and other opponents have yet to be determined in the round robin format. Dates are set for screenings for Oregon students Testing offered at BHC July 28 and Aug. 4 Dates for pre-participation drug, alcohol, and nicotine testing for Oregon school district students have been announced. Testing will be Thursday, July 28, from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 5:45 p.m. and

Thursday, Aug. 4, from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and 1 to 3:25 p.m. at the Blackhawk Center, Oregon. The cost is $30 per student. Testing is mandatory for all students in grades 6-12 prior to participating in any athletic extra-curricular activities for the upcoming school year. Any fees required and completion of the preparticipation drug test will be due before the first

competition (game, race, match, etc.) KSB Corporate Health and Wellness staff will test the students. Call Oregon High School at 815-732-5300, ext. 4041 to schedule an appointment. Students who are unable to attend either of the scheduled dates should call the KSB Oregon Clinic at 815-732-3151 to schedule an appointment at the Oregon facility.

When calling for an appointment in Oregon, students should identify themselves as OHS students. All payments must be made at the Blackhawk Center Athletics office, and a receipt of payment must be presented at the KSB Clinic if testing is completed there. In order to conduct the testing at either site a parent consent form must be presented at the time of the testing.

Students can not be tested without the official parent consent form. Consent forms may be found on the school website listed below. In addition to the mandatory testing, every student in grades 6-12 planning to participate in athletics within the Oregon School District must have a current physical, concussion form, and the consent/ registration form on file in the office before they will be

allowed to practice. These forms can be turned into the office at DLR Jr. High for junior high students or Blackhawk Center for high school students at any time before the first practice of the athlete’s first sport. Sports physicals are good for one calendar year, at which time they must be renewed. Information on forms and fees are also be found on the district website, www.ocusd.net.

for Mini-Iron Hawks The Oregon-Mt. Morris Junior Tackle Mini-Iron Hawks football camp will be held July 13, 18, and 20 at the Oregon High School practice football fields. These free workouts will be held from 4:30 to 5 p.m. on each of these four dates. They are designed for kids entering grades fifth through eighth. Participants will need shorts, T-shirt, and football shoes. The workouts are intended to help junior tackle players prepare for their season. They include

warm-up, speed and agility work, and an introduction to football fundamentals. Athletes do not need to be signed up for youth football or playing it this fall to attend the workouts. They are designed for anyone that wants to get some speed, agility, and football skill work in. There is no cost for the workouts and kids can attend any or all workouts.

The Oregon Park District’s annual Sprint Triathlon will be Saturday, July 30 beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event features a 300 meter swim, ten mile bike and 5K run. This year’s triathlon will feature a new course for both the 10 mile bike and 5K run. The bike route will now go on Oregon Trail Road further than before. The route will turn around prior to Ridge Road and out on Gale Road, it will turn around prior to the rail road tracks. The run this year will be out and around Fairgrounds Park instead of Park West. Registration will be accepted through July 27 but register by July 13 to be guaranteed a shirt. Check out the website for

the new bike and run course map. The event is for individuals or teams of two or three people. The swim segment is held at Nash Recreation Center indoor pool. Biking and running courses will loop through the community and surrounding areas. Registration is $35 per person or $70 per relay team of two or three people. OHS alums to take on Rock Falls Football game Friday, July 15 in Oregon Friday night football will make a rare, summer appearance on Saturday, July 15 at 7 p.m. as former players from Oregon High School and Rock Falls High School face off in an alumni matchup at OHS. The third annual Oregon alumni football game will feature former players of all age groups in a familiar

rivalry among Big Northern Conference football fans. Oregon alumni have won both previous contests against Winnebago and Amboy. The game is hosted by Alumni Football USA – a group that helps organize and officiate dozens of alumni games across the country each year. Oregon alum Shawn Melville has helped locally to organize the alumni games for the last three years and currently serves as a detective on the Oregon

Police Department. “The alumni football game is a great opportunity for former athletes to reunite with old friends and the game they love — all while supporting the current students at their alma mater,” said Melville. “Everyone who comes out to watch the game has a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to Friday’s matchup.” Tickets are available both in advance and at the gate on game day for $10. Fans can also purchase tickets from alumni players,

who will donate a portion of the proceeds towards the Oregon High School football program. Oregon man to be arraigned in fatal boat crash By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com An Oregon man charged in a June 24 fatal boating accident will be arraigned in Ogle County Court on Friday. According to court records, Marc Mongan, 46, pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol and reckless operation of a watercraft and demanded a jury trial during a court appearance July 6. Megan M. Wells, 31, Rockford, died as a result of a collision between a johnboat operated by Mongan and a pontoon boat on which she was a passenger. The crash occurred on the Rock River approximately three miles north of Oregon at 8:40 p.m. Wells was thrown overboard in the collision and was pronounced dead at Swedish American Hospital,

Rockford. An autopsy performed by the Winnebago County Coroner’s office showed Wells died from blunt force trauma to her chest. Ogle County Sheriff Police said Nicholas Lamb, 29, Oregon, a passenger in the johnboat, was transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Other occupants of the pontoon boat were David Daily, 52, Leaf River, the operator; Phillip Lukes, 52, Chicago; and Sherry Bushre, 59, Chicago. They refused treatment at the scene. Mongan also refused treatment. According to court records, Oregon attorney Alan Cargerman initially represented Mongan, but will file a motion Friday to withdraw as counsel. Rochelle attorney David Tess entered his appearance as Mongan’s legal counsel during the July 6 hearing.

Sheriff Arrests Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity. July 4 At 12:55 a.m., deputies responded to the 10000 block of North Pecatonica Road for a one-vehicle accident. When deputies arrived they located an unoccupied Blue Ford Focus in the east ditch with damage to the front. On July 6, deputies were contacted by the owner and driver of the Ford, Sondra Heffran, 32, Leaf River. Heffran was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of drug equipment, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to report an accident to Police and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Heffran was booked and released through the Ogle County Jail and will appear in court at a later date. July 5 Shelby Crossen, 51, Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Crossen’s full cash bond was set at $287 pending a court appearance. Keegan Akers, 20, Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant on a motion to increase bond. Akers posted $2,500 as a full cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 22. Chet Harrolle, 34, Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Harrolle’s full cash bond was set at $807 pending a court appearance.

July 6 At approximately 12:04 p.m., deputies responded to the 8000 block of Kishwaukee Road in reference to a possible violation of an order of protection. After an investigation, Michael Shaw, 47, Stillman Valley, was arrested for violation of an order of protection. Shaw was transported to the Ogle County jail where he was held in lieu of bond pending a July 6 court appearance. At 9:47 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 12,500 block of North Baileyville Road, on a 2000 Ford Van that was reported stolen from an address in Lanark. After a short investigation, Jessica McHugh, 28, Lanark, was arrested for unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug equipment, unlawful possession of hypodermic needles, and driving under the influence of drugs. McHugh was also given citations for improper lane usage and failure to show driver’s license. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Deputies responded to an accident with injuries in the 16,000 block of East Ill. 72. Juan M. Sanchez, 53, Chicago, was traveling west in his white 2003 Mack semi when the right tires left the roadway and entered onto the soft shoulder. Sanchez attempted to drive the semi back onto the roadway and over corrected. He lost control of the semi and it overturned and struck a utility pole. Sanchez was transported

to Swedish American Hospital by Monroe Center ambulance due to non life threatening injuries. Ryan M. Scudder, 31,f Byron, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Scudder posted $1,854 as a purge bond and was released with no further court date needed. Tyrone G. Rogers, 30, Genoa, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while under the influence, failure to appear, and two violations of bond warrants. His total bond amount was set at $7,481 pending a July 8 court appearance. Michael Shaw, 47, homeless, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear and violation of an order of protection. His bond was set at $815 pending a July 8 court appearance. Xzavier D. Parker, 24, Morrisonville, Wisconsin, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His bond was reduced to $300 pending a July 8 court appearance. At approximately 6:15 p.m., deputies performed a traffic stop at the intersection of Seminary Street and Emily Street in Mt. Morris. After an investigation, Kimberly Dial, 49, Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of cannabis between 10-30 grams. Dial was also issued a citation for improper lane usage. Dial was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 7 At approximately 1:21 a.m., deputies responded to121 1/2 S. Fourth St., Oregon, in reference to a domestic battery which had occurred earlier in the night at the White Pines State Park campground. After investigation, deputies went to White Pines State Park and arrested John Hitchcock, 33, Oregon for domestic battery. Hitchcock was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. At approximately 5:27 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle property damage accident at the intersection of Mulford Road and Ill. 38. Upon completing an investigation, it was determined that Marcus C Stroud, 23, Kingston, was southbound on Mulford Road in a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer when he failed to yield to a vehicle stopping in front of him. Stroud rear-ended a 2003 Chevy Blazer driven by Tyler A.N. Schumacher, 18, Dixon. No injuries were reported. Stroud was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Stroud was taken into custody for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond. At approximately 6:57 p.m., deputies and personnel from the Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash on Baseline Road near East Line Road. An investigation determined that a westbound vehicle driven by Ronald Weis, 67, Rockford, skidded off the south side of the road and overturned. Weis and

his wife Wiltrud Weis, 70, were transported by LSR Ambulance to Swedish American Hospital for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. Christopher Elswick, 26, Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for petition to revoke. Elswick posted 10 percent of the $3,000 full cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 5. William J. Kelley, 35, Creve Coeur, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for motion to increase bail. Kelley’s bond was set at $25,000 pending a court appearance on July 8. July 8 At approximately 2:15 p.m., deputies performed a traffic stop at the entrance to Lake Ladonna in the 1000 block of South Harmony Road. After an investigation, Douglas Knautz, 31, West Frankfort, was arrested for no valid driver’s license. Knautz was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Knautz was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. At approximately 3:15 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on a silver Jeep Cherokee in the 100 block of N. Sixth 6th St., Oregon. The stop was initiated due to the vehicle having an expired registration. As a result of the stop the registered owner, Gretchen L. Warmolts, 69, Oregon, was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration. Warmolts was also found to have an expired driver’s license. She was issued a citation for driving without a

license and given an I- Bond on the scene and is scheduled for a court appearance on Aug. 3. Dillon Singley, 23, Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Singley posted $206 full cash for bond and was released with no further court date. Daniel Stickler, 19, Byron, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Sheriff Arrests From B3 Road in reference to a single vehicle accident. An investigation determined that the driver of the vehicle, Sean D. Winsel, 22, Winnebago, had swerved to miss a deer. County News Obituaries Doris J. Ackerman Doris June Ackerman, 83, Forreston, died on Saturday July 9, 2016 at Polo Rehabilitations & Health Care Center. Doris was born on June 8, 1933 in Forreston, the daughter of Myron and Josephine (Gershbaugh) DeWall. She married Donald Ackerman on May 4, 1954 in Forreston. He died on Nov. 24, 1993. Doris graduated from Deaconess Nursing School and farmed with her husband for many years. She enjoyed gardening and sewing for her grandchildren. She was a member of Forreston Reformed Church

Gregory M. Frantz Gregory M. Frantz, 61, Oregon, formerly of Elmhurst, died on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the University of Wisconsin Madison Hospital. He was born on Aug. 5, 1954 in Elmhurst, the son of Rollin J. and Margaret E. (Duff) Frantz. He graduated form York High School in Elmhurst in the Class of 1973 and then attended the University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana. Greg married Elizabeth “Betty” Gleiter on Dec. 29, 1988 in Walworth County, Wisconsin. She preceded him on Jan. 16, 2015. Greg worked 37 years as a Nuclear Reactor operator at the Exelon Station in Byron, retiring in January of 2015. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oregon where he taught Sunday School and served on the church board.

Megan M. Wells Megan M. (Swaziek) Wells, 31, Rockford, died on Friday, June 24, 2016 after a tragic boating accident when a speedboat hit the pontoon she was riding in on the Rock River near Oregon. She was born in Winfield on July 3, 1984, to David and Robin (Daily) Swaziek, and married Robbie E. Wells on May 24, 2014. Megan was an avid Green Bay Packers fan who counted down the days until football season started. She loved the outdoors, bonfires, and spending time with her family. Megan was a loving mother to her three children. Her life revolved around her children and family. Megan loved visiting the Swaziek family farm in Muscoda, Wisconsin, that has been in the family since 1890. Megan graduated from Harlem High School in 2002 where she was a star member of the swim team.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the Greg loved to cook, create with Lego building blocks, and ride his bicycle with the various bike clubs he belonged to. He served on the parent board of the Northern Illinois Academy in North Aurora. A big part of his legacy is his involvement with his two sons which he and Betty adopted from Brazil. He is survived by his two sons, Ederaldo “Edge” Frantz, North Aurora, and Steven C. Frantz, Oregon; three brothers; Jeff Frantz, Elmhurst, Mark (Alice) Frantz, Western Springs, and Tim (Annette) Frantz, Lawrenceville, Georgia; mother-in-law, Frances Meyers, Calumet City; father-in-law, Joseph Gleiter, Orland Park; Brazilian daughter Bruna, and her children, Duda and Enzo. He was predeceased by his parents and wife, Betty. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 12 at Megan worked for Gleason Cutting Tools. Ewell D. Gardner Ewell D. Gardner, 67, Mt. Morris, died peacefully on Friday July 8, 2016 at his home with his wife by his side. Ewell was born on April 20, 1949 in Bristol, Washington County, Virginia, the son of Harrie W. and Mary Lee (Gilley) Gardner. He graduated from Gate City High School, Gate City, Virginia. Ewell married Mary Etta Heshelman on May 26, 1973 in Belvidere. Ewell moved to Belvidere in 1967 to work at Green Giant and then work for Chrysler. He moved to Mt. Morris in 1976 and worked for lumber yards in Oregon and Polo. Ewell most recently enjoyed his time helping Sunset Golf Club with anything they needed. Wilma P. Pierce, 93, died on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris. Wilma was born on Dec. 7, 1922 in rural Polo, the daughter of Roy and Frances (Hoak) Reynolds. She graduated from Polo Community High School in the Class of 1940. She married Wayne Pierce on Sept. 1, 1942. He preceded her in death on April 25, 2010. From September of 1942 until April of 1943 she was with Wayne who was at Army bases in Georgia and North Carolina, then returned to Polo. In August of 1945 when Wayne returned from overseas they moved to Mt. Morris, being there until her death except for winters spent in Tucson, Arizona, from 1985 to 2004. Wilma was an active worker and member of the
