kfinlon@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Current and soon-to-be DeKalb city officials said they don’t plan to further address the backyard chickens issue following a majority of voters April 6 indicating they don’t support the measure in an advisory referendum. As of 9:15 p.m. April 6 with 26 of 26 City of DeKalb precincts reporting, 53.94%, or 1,970 voters, within the city voted against having backyard chickens within city limits. Those who were in favor of the advisory referendum made up 46.06% of the vote, or 1,682 votes. “So the message of the people who took the time to vote appears to be they do not want to allow backyard chickens in the city of DeKalb,” DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas said. DeKalb Mayor-Elect Cohen Barnes said April 7 “the people have spoken” on the matter. He said he hasn’t thought about whether he would personally entertain an ordinance being brought to the City Coun-

cil anyway, but the bottom line is that voters voted the referendum down. “I think we should support the will of the voters at this point,” Barnes said. Ward 4 race remains too close to call In Ward 4, incumbent Greg Perkins leads challenger Matthew Keys by just four votes, so the race will not be called until outstanding mail-in votes are certified and final tallies are counted. Perkins received 50.34% of the vote, or 296 votes, while Keys received 49.66%, or 292 votes. Keys said the race was “closer than anticipated,” and said he’s waiting for the remaining mail-in ballots to come in. “I think the most important take from this result is just how effective every person’s vote is, especially in local elections,” Keys said. DeKalb Ward 2 race leader reaction Barb Larson, who appears to be the next Ward 2 alderman according to unofficial results, said she was surprised to see how close the vote was on the chicken referendum.

She said she thought more people would be against it – and maybe that’s still the case, but the split was a lot closer to the center among the voting population. Larson said she is looking forward to getting to work. She said she applauds Barnes for what he had to say about addressing issues within the city surrounding Hunter Properties and his goals to strive for social equity in the city. “I am right there to support him in any way I can and the vote will be to protect the taxpayers,” Larson said. “ ... We are taxed out.” Doug Johnson, DeKalb County clerk and recorder, said 136 mail-in ballots were outstanding as of April 6. Ballots postmarked by April 6 will be counted if they arrive by 14 days after the election. Results will be certified two weeks after Election Day. Larson said she’s feeling good about her chances to win the race. “I’m feeling pretty secure,” Larson said. “But I’ll be more secure in the next couple of weeks when they verify everything.”

Steve Braser takes big lead in Sycamore mayoral race By KATIE FINLON

kfinlon@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Within an hour after polls closed April 6, a current Sycamore alderman is well ahead in the city’s mayoral race. As of late-evening on April 6 with 18 of 19 Sycamore precincts reporting, Sycamore Ward 3 Alderman Steve Braser so far is leading in the mayoral race with 81.21% of the vote. Braser is pulling ahead of challenger Adam Benn, who has 18.79% of the vote. “I just appreciate all of the support that I’ve had,” Braser said.

Braser said his first priority, should he officially win the mayoral race, will be hiring a new city manager after longtime city manager Brian Gregory became DeKalb County administrator starting March 1. “I’m just looking forward to see what kind of opportunities we will have ... and who applies for the position,” Braser said. Braser said the city’s in a good spot so far. He said Acting City Manager Maggie Peck is doing well in the role so far, as are other staff members including recently appointed public works director Matt Anderson.

“Things have really been falling into place,” Braser said. “We just have to keep on making the right decisions.” As of late-evening on April 6 with all eight of Sycamore’s 2nd Ward precincts reporting, incumbent Pete Paulsen is leading with 65.24% of the votes, accounting for 137 votes. Challenger Mike Rodriguez had 34.76%, or 73, of the votes. Doug Johnson, DeKalb County clerk and recorder, said more than 450 outstanding mail-in ballots weren’t returned as of April 2. It’s unclear how many outstanding mail-in ballots remain as of April 6.

DeKalb Municipal Band sets season opener for June 8 THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The show must go on even entering a second season amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as the conductor for the DeKalb Municipal Band announced the band’s 167th season will begin June 8. “It is with great pleasure and excitement I announce that the DeKalb Municipal Band will begin its 167th consecutive season of live music two months from today, June 8th, 2021,” Director Kirk Lundbeck said in an April 8 statement. The band has operated continuously for 166 seasons, and didn’t let the pandemic stop performances last year either, with concerts amended to follow public health protocol last summer. “It is expected, at this point, to begin the season under the same pandemic rules we had to implement last season,” Lundbeck said. “We will again limit our band size slightly to create the proper social distancing for our band members and limit the size of our audience by creating a reservation system through dekalb-

countytickets.com. As COVID guidelines are modified or reduced, we will adjust our band size and our available audience seating.” A full schedule of concerts is expected to continue through Aug. 17, Lundbeck said, marking his ninth year as music director and 10th conducting “this wonderful group of talented musicians.” The band puts on free outdoor concerts on Tuesdays throughout the summer at the Dee Palmer Bandshell at Hopkins Park. In his announcement April 8, Lundbeck recalled his predecessor’s spirit headed into the next season. “The beloved Dee Palmer is with us in spirit every week as we continue to raise the spirits of our very supportive audiences,” Lundbeck said. “It is with your support that we can continue the legacy of this musical icon for many years to come.” Those wishing to support the band are invited to donate to the band through the website at www.dekalbmunicipalband. com.

DeKALB – Last July, Julie Lesmer was cleaning up trash along the side of the road when Laura Adkins stopped to join. After working together to pick up trash, the two friends decided they wanted to do more to clean up DeKalb. Lesmer and Adkins created the Facebook group, Trash Squirrels: Cleaning Up DeKalb, which has more than 300 members. The group’s mission is to help make the community look better by picking up garbage along roads and in parks. “I think starting the group comes from a love of biking and wanting our paths to be clean,” Lesmer said. “Picking up trash is something easy to do. You can even do it while out walking your dog. I hope the group helps make this a way of life. People can bring their kids and make it a learning experience. It’s our land, and we, a collective we, all care about the outcome.” The Trash Squirrels have picked up more than 1,000 pounds of trash since last year. During a cleanup event April 3 along Greenwood Acres Drive in DeKalb, the group filled 25 garbage bags and one bag for recycling. The items collected weighed a total 168 pounds. The group found interesting items while picking up trash: a car tire, an iPhone, an inflatable pool, a decoy plastic swan, golf balls, $2 and a rolled up pair of socks. Aaron Schwab found $100 while picking up trash with the group previously, and he used the money to purchase trash pickers for future cleanup events. “It’s a bit sad that all you see is trash when you drive around,” Schwab said. “It’s definitely fun to clean up, and you get instant gratification. You start with an empty bag, and you end with a big bag full of trash that’s not on the ground anymore.” Philip Henrikson learned about the group online. “I wanted to support however I could, so I brought extra gloves, trash pickers, trash bags and wagons,” he said. “It was a no-brainer because it

Some of the names that are given our good old city of DeKalb are amusing to say the least, and it is a wonder that mail men working on the railroad know where to consign the letters and circulars. It is a common occurrence to have mail received here spelled “DeKolb” and other such oddities. One was received today at The Chronicle office that is ahead of anything so far received. The mail was addressed to a member of the firm of the “Debalk Chronicle Pub. Co., Debalk, Illinois.” It is any wonder that sometimes mail goes wrong. Reports were received at the police station yesterday that someone is in the habit of borrowing bicycles from the Glidden school at various times during the day and causing considerable trouble there. The superintendent of the school has enlisted the aid of the police in an effort to stop this practice in every case thus far, the young man is said to have returned the bike before school is out in the afternoon, but it is believed better to stop the practice at once. Fire Chief McEvoy and his electrician Louis Moulton, have been scouring around today looking for trouble. They were not looking for trouble whereby they would be called upon to defend themselves in a fistic encounter, but trouble with the fire alarm system. In some manner a grounded wire was discovered somewhere in the system and it took the chief and his aid the most of the forenoon before they found the trouble. DeKalb people, both young and old, should remember that automobiles have just as much right to drive through the streets as they have to walk across the thoroughfares. Another thing they should remember is that crossing a street in the middle of the block is dangerous, as many people driving cars on Lincoln Highway have their hands full keeping the machine in the road on account of the ruts. Fifteen sleepers and one drunk were in the custody of the police department over the weekend, ten of the sleepers coming in Saturday night and the remaining five last night. A young man of the city arrested Saturday night told the police someone slipped him a drink that knocked him cold was also before the judge this morning and given a fine. He insisted that it was the first time he had ever been drunk and on that account he was not given a severe punishment by the court.

1946 – 75 YEARS AGO August Bartels of Genoa has purchased the old H. H. Slater property which is located at the southwest corner of Main and Genoa Streets. Included in the sale are four lots on which are located a gasoline station and the old Slater residence. Before entering the service, Mr. Bartels operated the Ford agency in Genoa. Mr. Bartels has not decided as yet what he plans to do with the property and did not comment on his purchase. A freight train engine was derailed and three freight cars were overturned this morning at Kirkland when an eastbound Milwaukee freight crashed into the rear of another freight, also eastbound, and stopped at the time. Two carloads of shelled corn and a carload of scrap iron were overturned and scattered and the engine was derailed although it did not overturn. The accident occurred just west of the feed yards located at the western edge of Kirkland. Fortunately no one was injured in the crash but considerable rail was torn up. Chief of Police George Mier sent out a warning today to all owners of dogs. All dogs found loose with or without license will be picked up. Chief Mier stated that there had been a lot of cases reported recently of persons being bitten by loose dogs. Also complaints have been coming in about dogs digging in gardens that have just been recently planted. Mier said he had been lenient with the owners up to now, but

the dogs will be picked up and disposed of if they are not kept on a leash. While Grover Hart, a Milan resident, is a patient at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minn., recovering from major surgery, his friends gathered at his farm home today in an effort to clean up his spring work. About twenty neighbors with fifteen tractors arrived at the home early this morning and were taking care of the spring plowing and seeding in a one-day rush of activity. They expect to have the major share of the work out of the way by evening. Shortly after 9 o’clock this morning, Marie Edwards reported to the DeKalb police that Mrs. Zerby of 1016 Grove had walked into the side of the car driven by Mrs. Edwards east on Grove Street. Mrs. Zerby was cutting diagonally across Grove Street between Tenth and Eleventh Streets and was just brushed by the auto as Mrs. Edwards swerved the car. Mrs. Zerby was knocked off her feet but fortunately escaped serious injury and did not need medical attention.

1971 – 50 YEARS AGO The possibility of a new airport site or the feasibility of rejuvenating and enlarging the present municipal airport will be studied by the city as a result of action by the city council last night. An Alderman introduced a proposal to “look at some new possible sites now that the air space east of the city formerly taken by Sycamore’s airport

(now abandoned) is available.” A watch dog was apparently sleeping on the job during a burglary at Bob’s Outboard Marine. An unknown number of guns and rifles were reported missing from the store. The owners said this morning that he has still not determined the exact number of weapons that were taken, and is uncertain of their total value. A dog which was kept near the gun shop at the rear of the property apparently did not scare the burglars or make enough noise to alert nearby residents.

1996 – 25 YEARS AGO The DeKalb Plan Commission approved an annexation agreement and concept plan last night for a 242-acre, 900-unit subdivision at the southwest corner of Rich Road and North First Street. Developers are touting the upscale development’s roughly 60 acres of meandering ponds and steams, waterfalls, covered bridges, nature trails and landscaping surrounding single-family, duplex and multi-family housing. Members of the DeKalb County Board were presented with a proposal last night to build a new county nursing home facility which would be operated by a public-private partnership. So far, 52 accidents involving cars striking deer have been reported to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department this year and officials believe that number could rise in the next few weeks.

Sycamore plans new twist on Cinco de Mayo celebration THE MIDWEEK SYCAMORE – For more than 20 years, Sycamore’s Cinco de Mayo has been providing an opportunity to celebrate the Hispanic culture through food, entertainment and family activities, all while creating awareness and raising money for the local nonprofit community. Last year, the event was canceled the first time in its history because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A modified event for 2021 will take place on Sunday, May 2, with Sycamore Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Packs to Go. All of the fan favorites will be packaged together to create and enjoy a fiesta at home. While the “event” will look different, the intent to celebrate the Hispanic culture and raise money for the nonprofit community remains the same. “We are so happy to be able to continue to carry on the tradition of Cinco de Mayo for 2021,” Jesus Romero, Sycamore’s Cinco de Mayo founder, said in a news release. “Keeping our community safe is our No. 1 priority, and the

new format for this year’s event will allow everyone to ‘fiesta’ safely at home. We hope to celebrate with the community once again in person in 2022.” Starting now through April 25, guests can reserve their taco fiesta to create the perfect party at home. Evaluating seniors’ biggest expenses METRO CREATIVE New parents may not be able to visualize that one day their largest expenditures won’t be centralized around providing necessities for their children. Adults go though many years of paying for diapers, toys, clothing, food, and education for their children. Yet, when the children have flown the coop, spending patterns change, and even more changes await come retirement. According to a 2020 survey from the financial services firm Edward Jones, 68 percent of workers soon to retire said they had no idea how much they should be setting aside for expenses, particularly health care and long-term care. Professionals approaching retirement would be wise to analyze the Consumer Price Index – Elderly (CPI-E). It is a good reference to estimate which future expenses will cost the most after retirement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics looks at consumer spending and uses various data to determine the rate of inflation in key areas that apply to older adults starting at age 62. Individuals may be surprised to learn about where they’ll be spending the bulk of their money when they get older. Here’s a look at some key categories. • Housing: According to data from the Employee Benefit Research Institute, in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available, housing accounted for roughly 49 percent of all spending for seniors. Focus should be centered on lowering those costs when a fixed income is imminent. The possibilities

include paying off a mortgage; downsizing a home to have a lower rent or mortgage payment; refinancing a home to a fixed-rate loan so that costs are predictable; and taking on a tenant to offset costs. • Food: The cost of food will not change dramatically, but it can eat into your budget. Even though food costs may decline when there’s only two mouths to feed, food and beverage spending may go up due to more leisure time and dining out. Utilize senior discounts by shopping on days when stores offer percentages off purchases. Save money on restaurant spending by eating out at lunch instead of dinner, splitting plates or skipping appetizers. • Healthcare: Experts warn that while many expenses decline in retirement, health care spending increases. According to Fidelity, the average 65-year-old couple retiring in 2020 in the United States needed roughly $295,000 just to cover their retirement health care expenses. Those with family histories of severe illnesses or those with preexisting conditions will need even more. It’s also important to realize that roughly half of the population will need longterm care at some point, offers The Motley Fool, and that requires advanced budgeting as well. Many people find that Medicare supplement plans can bridge the gap in expenses that government-run plans will not cover. Saving through a health savings account (HSA) when employed also can create extra cash on hand for retirement expenses. Understanding which retirement expenses will be high can help people plan better for the future.

Community Foundation funds new incubators at Oaken Acres THE MIDWEEK The job of a wildlife rehabilitator is a challenging one but made easier with modern equipment. In the past, the DeKalb County Community Foundation has funded the purchase of an exam station, an autoclave, and now, two new modern incubators at Oaken Acres Wildlife Center in Sycamore. The incubators are equipped with nebulizers and digital temperature and humidity controls. Oaken Acres has been using incubators for decades to save the lives of wild orphans that people from DeKalb County rescue and bring to them. From squirrels, raccoons, opossums, foxes and coyotes to nestling birds and ducklings, all newborns need constant and controlled temperature and humidity to increase their rate of survival. These are the most sophisticated units that Oaken Acres has had.

“We are very honored to support Oaken Acres Wildlife Center in the purchase of an incubator to help save the lives of more orphaned and injured wild animals in DeKalb County,” DCCF Grants Director Tiffany McQueen Lewis said in a news release. “Our support of this organization over the years has helped enable them to better fulfill their mission, and we are proud to be in partnership with such a treasured organization in this county,” Lewis said in the release. Oaken Acres has cared for more than 25,000 orphaned and injured wild animals since it was founded in 1984 in rural Sycamore. Kishwaukee College recently awarded nine COVID-19 relief grants to local small businesses. Grants were made possible through a partnership between Kish College, Waubonsee Community College Small Business Development Center and First Midwest Bank. Businesses receiving the $500 grants include: Le Print Express, Energize Fitness, The Warehouse on Park, J&M Productions, Marathon Fitness of Sycamore, Mellow Mammals, The Enchanted Valley Farm, Dimensions Dance Academy and Sib’s Corner Grill. Businesses are able to use grant funds for resources or items that will help them recover. “The grant from Kishwaukee College through the SBDC was perfect

timing. It was used for upgrading the fans in our dining room,” Greg Sibigtroth, owner of Sib’s Corner Grill in Genoa, said in a news release. “I feel very fortunate in starting a relationship with Waubonsee Community College, Kishwaukee College and the SBDC. In the last two months, I have received the grant, met with the SBDC, and have been introduced to several contacts, which I feel will support and help the growth of my business. I’ve been in business for one year and look forward to the many avenues they have to offer.” COVID-19 relief grants are still available on a first-come, first-served basis. Civil War reenactors returning to Sandwich’s Knights Park April 16-18 THE MIDWEEK SANDWICH – The 10th Illinois, Company H, Sandwich Guards, representing a local company of Civil War soldiers, will be encamped at Knights Park, at the corner of Arnold Road and Latham Street in Sandwich, from Friday, April 16, through Sunday, April 18. Bob Winters, captain of the company, said April 16 will be set aside for

accompanied children who are attending area schools or are being homeschooled to attend. Admission is free and open to the public. The members of the Civil War group will be dressed in uniform, explaining their activities and duties while in camp and eating food prepared by the cook on an open fire.
