DISCOVER LOMBARD IN A NEW WAY

LHS App and America 250 Exhibit

Self-guided walking tours, local event information, and ideas on where to grab a cup of coffee or enjoy a meal are coming soon with a new app from the Lombard Historical Society.

Launching this spring for Lilac Time, the app brings the Lombard Historical Society into the digital space, creating a place where Lombard’s history and what is happening today come together. It offers residents and visitors an easy way to explore the community and all it has to offer.

“We want it to be useful for both those who live in Lombard and those who visit,” said Executive Director Alison Costanzo. “We see it as a way to elevate the Lombard Historical Society while also supporting the broader community.”

The app will guide users through self-

paced walking tours of Lombard’s historic sites while also serving as a real-time resource for what is happening in downtown Lombard. Through push notifications and regularly updated content, users can stay informed about events such as farmers markets, cruise nights, and activities hosted by the Lombard Historical Society and other local partners.

Beyond events, the app will help users discover Lombard more broadly, offering suggestions for places to eat, shop, and explore.

“I’m excited about the possibilities and the ability to support all of our great partners,” Costanzo said.

The app will also highlight current and upcoming exhibits, including this summer’s Power of Place: America 250

Outdoor Art Installation, with additional content added over time to keep the experience fresh and relevant.

The Power of Place project brings together Lombard students and professional artists in a collaborative exploration of what makes the community meaningful. Created in partnership with the Village of Lombard and the Lombard Park District, the installation reflects a shared vision of connection and place.

Earlier this spring, students from Lombard schools were invited to reflect on the theme Power of Place, considering the people, spaces, and experiences that shape their connection to the community.

“We wanted to do something that would bring people together,” Costanzo said. “We asked, how do we foster a sense of community?”

“We’re so fortunate. Lombard has so many amazing stories,” Costanzo said.

In addition to highlighting wellknown figures from the village’s past, the Lombard Historical Society is committed to sharing the stories of everyday people who have shaped the community.

“This is a celebration of the stories that make Lombard unique,” Costanzo said. “We’re not just a place for old things. We see history as part of everyday life. It is a living, breathing thing.”

LOOK AT LOMBARD

Connecting people and places, the Look At Lombard Committee continues to find new ways to promote the downtown business district.

The Look at Lombard Committee was established to market downtown tourism, promoting events and business. President and CEO of the Lombard Chamber of Commerce Rick Galfano said it’s been exciting to watch the reinvestment in the downtown, with new business joining long-time businesses, creating a coveted destination in the community.

The Look at Lombard Committee has completed the third iteration of the Historic Downtown Lombard Walking Map. The convenient, free map for our community and mini visitors’ guide is a useful valueadd for Lombard Chamber of Commerce Members, Galfano said.

“Downtown Lombard is a notable landscape of mom & pop shops, creatives, and entrepreneurs who said yes to sharing their dreams and vision with our community,” Galfano said. “Our goal is to amplify and support the heartbeats of those spaces where our neighbors and visitors gather. Our local businesses are surrounded and highlighted by the strength and beauty of Lombard’s rich history, parks, gardens, trails, and accessibility via many modes of transportation.”

The map is available at the Lombard Chamber of Commerce office, Lombard Park District, Lombard Village Hall, Helen Plum Library in downtown Lombard and in business locations throughout downtown Lombard.

In addition to promoting community events, such as the weekly Farmers Market on

Tuesday evenings, May through October, and the village’s summer Cruise Nights on Saturdays, the committee is excited to announce a new event for the calendar.

The Historic Downtown Lombard Art Walk will debut Sunday, Nov. 15. Fine artists will exhibit their work at venues across the downtown.

For the art walk, visitors will pick up an art passport, and collect stamps as they visit locations to see the art from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The art walk will take visitors to local restaurants, retailers and businesses in downtown Lombard, with ample time to stop and snack and shop along the way. Accomplished painters, potters, photographers, and other fine arts media will be on display for purchase, and the opportunity to meet the artists.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Building a strong community takes great partnerships and that’s what drives Trevor Dick, the Economic Development and Planning Director for the Village of Lombard.

“I really love getting things done and that takes partnerships,” Dick said. “The village can’t do it alone, it takes working with the Lombard Chamber of Commerce, DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau, Choose DuPage and the school districts and businesses.”

Dick joined the Village of Lombard in 2025, bringing experience from working in Aurora and Naperville. While those communities still had parcels of open land, Lombard is fairly built out, Dick said. That puts his focus into redevelopment.

“The opportunity for redevelopment, looking at building usage that is outdated, or vacant, or in need of remodeling,” he said.

One of these opportunities includes the redevelopment at Yorktown Center, which includes new residential developments as well as spaces the greater community will enjoy in addition to the dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities.

“It’s going to be exciting to see that, almost like a second downtown,” Dick said.

Every four years the Village Trustees update a strategic plan, which serves to guide the community, and for Dick, provides some focus areas for economic development.

“Those represent the top priorities,” Dick said, adding having the village leadership’s top priorities and the areas of focus helps hone the vision for the community.

He has dived into his role and was part of the collaboration to bring forth the first Restaurant Week for the Village of Lombard at the end of January. The event was well received, with restaurant participation from local and national business owners and it brought visitors to the community for dining experiences, generating additional revenues at a traditionally quiet time for businesses.

“I had the goal of getting 10 restaurants to participate for the first year and we had 50 restaurants. From mom-and-pop restaurants to big national brands,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out.”

GIVING DUPAGE

Giving DuPage collaborates with nonprofits and services agencies to information to individuals, businesses about opportunities for volunteering and making contributions. JUNIOR WOMEN’S CLUB

Lombard Junior Women’s Club is part of the Illinois General Federation of Women’s Clubs organization. Its members are diverse and multi-faceted women with a common commitment of community service. The group participates in a number of service projects including the TLC Camp for children with cancer, the Lilac Princess program and charitable organizations in Lombard. Lombard Noon Lions Club is one of the world’s largest service organizations and seeks to encourage serviceminded people to serve their community without personal or financial reward. POISED FOR SUCCESS

Poised for Success provides interview and business appropriate clothing to women who need assistance in the job market, including veterans transitioning to civilian workforce, domestic violence survivors and single parents. Through generous donations its volunteers assist clients, who are referred by social service agencies and seen by appointment, with items to wear, as well as the opportunity to work on interview skills. ROTARY CLUB

Rotary Club of Lombard sponsors college scholarships for high school seniors, distributes food and money, contributes to a variety of local nonprofit organizations, as well as supports the efforts of Rotary International, which include eradication of polio, provision of clean water in developing countries and support of literacy. Lombard Service League is an affiliate of the International General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The club serves the community through various service projects and fundraisers. THE OUTREACH HOUSE

The Square—planned for the former Carson’s department store site— will serve as a vibrant outdoor destination designed for visitors of all ages, said Gayle Gleespen, Yorktown Center’s marketing and business development lead. The space will feature a mix of entertainment and recreation, including a children’s playground, a dedicated dog park, and a stage for outdoor concerts and community events. Generous seating and lush, landscape green areas will be incorporated throughout, creating a welcoming environment for gathering, relaxation, outdoor dining, seasonal activations and programming.

Yorktown Reserve leasing remains strong with interest in the luxury residences, designed for individuals and families across multiple demographics. The residential floorplans vary from studio apartments to units with three bedrooms and three baths.

Yorktown Reserve offers upscale fixtures and amenities including a private courtyard pool, outdoor kitchens, pickleball courts, and sports simulators. all within walking distance of the center’s shopping, dining, and entertainment. The first residential units are scheduled to open in summer 2026.
