What causes fibromyalgia? Widespread pain in the muscles and joints can make daily life very difficult. When such pain persists, it may be the byproduct of an illness known as fibromyalgia. The Mayo Clinic says fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is often accompanied by fatigue, and may even affect memory, mood and sleep. People with fibromyalgia usually experience periodic symptoms that are characterized as flare-ups. It can sometimes be overwhelming and exhausting to navigate fibromyalgia, says the Cleveland Clinic. The periods between feeling good and suddenly having a flare-up can cause anxiety and despair. Experts aren’t exactly sure what causes fibromyalgia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people ages 30 to 50 are more likely to develop the condition. Women, those with a family history of fibromyalgia, and individuals with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis also are at higher risk of developing fibromyalgia. Doctors know
that symptoms tend to follow a triggering event. Triggers may be surgery, infections, injuries, or emotional stress. The Cleveland Clinic says people with fibromyalgia are usually particularly sensitive to pain. It is believed genetic mutations responsible for forming the neurotransmitters in the brain that receive pain signals might cause fibromyalgia, although a direct link has yet to be identified. Fibromyalgia typically is diagnosed after a physical exam, X-rays, lab tests, and an evaluation of a person’s medical history. There is no cure for fibromyalgia; health care providers treat and manage symptoms with medication and therapy. People with fibromyalgia may identify ways to manage symptoms on their own. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which changes how people act or think, also can help someone cope with negative thoughts about their symptoms, says the CDC. Researchers continually strive to understand the causes of fibromyalgia and to develop new treatment strategies so individuals can find relief. TF265839

How to recognize mental fatigue Everyone feels tired at some point. The signs of physical fatigue are often easily recognizable. Slower movements, heavy eyes, achy muscles, and even frequent yawning are some telltales signs that a body is tired. But what about mental fatigue? WebMD notes that mental fatigue affects the mind instead of the muscles. That can make mental fatigue difficult to spot. But identifying the presence of mental fatigue is important, as untreated mental fatigue can affect decision-making and performance at work and in the classroom. Anyone can develop mental fatigue, but those who find themselves frequently overwhelmed by work, school or personal obligations may be particularly vulnerable. Recognition of the following signs of mental fatigue may compel those dealing with such exhaustion to take
a break and seek help. • Mood changes: People suffering from mental fatigue may experience mood changes that would otherwise be considered out of character. Increased irritability, a shortened temper, a lack of patience for others, and increased instances of snapping at people are some mood changes that indicate the presence of mental fatigue. • Loss of productivity: A noticeable dip in productivity is another sign of mental fatigue. WebMD notes that a loss of productivity induced by mental fatigue occurs because the feeling of tiredness compromises a person’s ability to concentrate. Mental fatigue also can drain a person’s motivation. Distractions become harder to ignore when suffering from mental fatigue, which in turn diminishes productivity.
• Instances of zoning out: Mental fatigue can get in the way of a person’s ability to focus on what he or she is doing. This sense of zoning out can be particularly dangerous, as it can strike even when driving a vehicle. In fact, WebMD notes a link between mental fatigue and car accidents. • Inability to sleep: It may seem counterintuitive that mental fatigue would make it difficult to sleep, but it can. People with mental fatigue may struggle to wind down and stop thinking about work- or schoolrelated tasks come bedtime. That can trigger insomnia. One of the dangers associated with this side effect of mental fatigue is that lack of sleep can worsen feelings of exhaustion. • Increased anxiety: WebMD notes that mental fatigue triggers the sympathetic nervous
system, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and panic. These feelings may be everpresent. • Physical side effects: Some people find it harder to exercise when their minds are fatigued. A 2017 study published in the journal Sports Medicine found that the duration and intensity of a physical task are important variables when considering the potential effects of mental fatigue on physical performance. Researchers identified a decreased time to physical exhaustion, and a resulting decline in endurance performance, as a side effect of mental fatigue. Mental fatigue can take a serious toll. Anyone who suspects they are suffering from mental fatigue is urged to contact a health care provider. EL265823

Common migraine triggers More than a billion people across the globe experience and live with migraine headaches. The National Institutes of Health says 14 percent of the population experiences migraines, and that number includes 40 million people in America alone. People who regularly experience migraines know that an attack is rarely just a headache. A migraine is a complicated neurological event that often features a host of symptoms that may vary depending on the person. Recent data from the Global Burden of Disease study confirms that migraines remain the leading cause of disability among neurological disorders. The Migraine Science Collaborative says research has moved from viewing migraine triggers as isolated events and instead focuses on the several
small factors that may stack up until a migraine sets in. Recognizing what can lead to an attack may help people get faster relief. • Gender: SingleCare says women are three times more likely to suffer migraines than men. While gender isn’t a trigger, it is a risk factor for women. • Stress: Pfizer says more than 70 percent of migraine sufferers cite stress as a major trigger for migraine. Often the cooling off period after a stress-

ful event is when the attack strikes. • Hormones: Wild shifts in the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, particularly during menstruation and perimenopause, account for a significant percentage of migraine attacks, says Alloy Health. Many women may find significant relief once they reach post-menopause and their hormones stabilize. • Weather: An upward trend in migraine severity is linked to extreme heat and rapid barometric pressure changes, suggests National Geographic. • Surprisal score: A surprisal score is a measure of how much daily experiences deviate from a person’s typical routine, according to the JAMA Network. Those with a higher surprisal score may find an increased, short-term migraine
risk. For example, drinking a glass of wine per day may not impact migraine, but having several drinks in a day may cause a rise in migraine odds within a certain period afterward. • Sleep disturbances: Pfizer says too little sleep and too much can disrupt the brain’s homeostatic balance and contribute to a migraine. • Foods and beverages: Foodand beverage-related triggers are subjective. But foods and beverages like aged cheeses, processed meats, red wine, artificial sweeteners, MSG, and caffeine may trigger a migraine, indicates Geisinger Health. Migraines are unpleasant, but people may be able to reduce their frequency by recognizing potential triggers, tracking them, and making certain lifestyle changes. TF266923

Can cataracts be prevented? Vision should be cherished at every stage in life. However, as one ages and vision changes become more profound, it is even more important to stay abreast of what can be done to care for the eyes in the hopes of preventing certain conditions, including cataracts. Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lenses. The World Health Organization estimates that cataracts affect more than 94 million people globally. Cataracts also account for nearly 45 percent of all blindness cases. Even though cataracts are considered an unavoidable part of the aging process, some people wonder if they can be prevented. Reedsburg Area Medical Center says that, while one cannot entirely stop the biological aging of the lens, delayed onset and reduced severity of cataracts is possible through targeted lifestyle choices. According to EyeHealth Northwest, by age 80, more than 90 percent of adults will either have a cataract or have already undergone surgery for them. Technically cataracts cannot be prevented, but these steps can help push cataract development
further into later life. • Wear sunglasses with UV protection. The consensus among experts is that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet B rays accelerates the breakdown of lens proteins. Consistent use of sunglasses that offer 100 percent UV protection can greatly slow this protein degradation. Wraparound frames will block light from the periphery as well as the front. • Lower oxidative stress. Preventing oxidative stress, a primary driver of lens opacification, can be achieved through diets

rich in antioxidants, says Premier Eye Care of Eastern Idaho. Lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C act as shields for the eye. Eye Physicians of Long Beach says the risk of age-related cataracts reduces by around 26 percent for every additional 10 mg of carotenoids added to a person’s diet. • Manage diabetes. The National Institutes of Health says individuals with diabetes face a 63 percent higher likelihood of requiring cataract surgery compared to those without the condition. Managing high blood sugar will prevent sorbitol from depositing in the lenses and causing cloudiness earlier in life. • Quit smoking: Smoking is a key factor in cataract development, says Optometrists.org. Smokers have a 1.66 times greater risk of developing cataracts than non-smokers because the toxins in tobacco smoke can deplete the body’s natural antioxidant stores. Although it may not be possible to turn off aging and prevent cataracts entirely, cataracts can be delayed and made less impactful through lifestyle changes. TF266929

When to consider duct cleaning
Homeowners know that maintenance is vital to protecting their home and their investment in it. A well-maintained home is both a point of pride and a sound investment. Home maintenance can improve the look of a home, and such efforts also may help to make spaces healthier for residents and guests. Duct cleaning is a home maintenance task that homeowners look to with the intention of making interior spaces healthier. The United States Environmental Protection Agency notes that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems, but the EPA nonetheless advises homeowners to consider duct cleaning if certain conditions are present. • Mold growth: The EPA notes a duct cleaning may be necessary if there is substantial and visible mold growth inside
hard surface ducts or on other components of a heating and cooling system. Mold growth can be difficult to confirm, as much of the heating and cooling system will not be visible. If an HVAC technician

reports the presence of mold, ask that a sample be analyzed at a lab, which the EPA notes is the only way to confirm the presence of mold. The EPA estimates the cost to analyze a sample is roughly $50.
• Presence of vermin: Rodents and insects in the ducts are a notable problem that needs to be remedied. A duct cleaning should be a component of vermin remediation, as rodents can leave feces in ducts, which may look like small brown pellets. • Dust and debris accumulation: The EPA notes that dust and debris that accumulates in the ducts can clog them. This also can lead to dust, debris and particles being released into the home through the vents. Duct cleaning can be part of the solution when homeowners are confronting certain conditions, including mold growth, vermin infestation, and excessive accumulation of dirt and debris. But the EPA notes it’s important that the underlying cause is addressed to prevent future issues. TF267969
