About THE CHAMBER
The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce, established in 1945, is a not-for-profit organization of businesses representing industry, retail, service professionals, and agriculture in partnership with tourism and government to further promote economic growth and quality of life in Mendota. The strength of the Chamber lies in the active involvement of its membership. Both large and small businesses are represented and influence the direction of the organization.

The Chamber office makes referrals of its members and promotes them through a variety of activities, making the public aware of the goods and services available here in Mendota from its membership.
Sponsoring community events and promoting tourism, such as Mendota’s Annual Sweet Corn Festival, one of the largest harvest festivals in the Midwest, annually attracting more than 40,000 visitors to Mendota, is also an important role of the Chamber. The Chamber office organizes the hundreds of volunteers necessary for this and other smaller events during the year.
The Chamber acts as a community information center, answering a variety of questions daily from the public.

endota’s mayor-council form of government, along with a dedicated clerk-collector, city treasurer, and city attorney, proudly serves its 7,000 residents. City leadership remains deeply committed to revitalization, beautification, and the continued growth of local businesses and amenities — ensuring Mendota remains a vibrant place to live, work, and gather.
Led by Police Chief Jason Martin, the 16-member Mendota Police Department provides 24-hour patrol and maintains a strong, visible presence throughout the community. Officers work closely with residents to support neighborhood watch programs and foster relationships built on trust and accessibility. The department is an active member of the TRIDENT Drug Narcotics Unit, provides a school resource officer at Mendota High School, and is further strengthened by K-9 Yoshi, who serves alongside officers in enhancing public safety efforts.
For fast, reliable information in case of an emergency, residents are encouraged to sign up for CODE RED. Information can be found on

The Mendota Fire Department exemplifies the same commitment to service, maintaining a full fleet of modern firefighting and rescue equipment, including three engines, an aerial tower, a heavy-duty rescue vehicle, and a rapid response vehicle. Their readiness and professionalism reflect the strong sense of duty shared by Mendota’s emergency services.
A Regional Dispatch Center supports these efforts by providing efficient and coordinated response for police, fire, and emergency services.
The Mendota Civic Center, located on the scenic shores of Lake Mendota, serves as a central gathering place for the Illinois Valley. With flexible meeting, conference, and banquet spaces accommodating groups from 15 to 500, it reflects the community’s welcoming and connected spirit.
Mendota continues to invest in its future through a range of programs and resources, including city-owned parks and a public pool, the CDAP Revolving Loan Fund, Tax Increment Financing, and participation in an Enterprise Zone. Through funding, coaching, and ongoing support, the city empowers both new and existing businesses to grow and thrive.

Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Activities
Mendota is a haven for anyone who loves the outdoors. With more than 325 acres of parkland — including 71 scenic acres along the water — the community offers endless ways to stay active, unwind, and connect with nature.
On the northwest side of town, Lake Mendota Park and nearby Lake Kakusha create a perfect pairing of recreation and relaxation. Spanning 68 acres, Lake Mendota is a favorite for anglers and features an accessible fishing pier. The surrounding park is packed with amenities, including playgrounds, pickleball courts, a dog park, Frisbee golf, volleyball courts, baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, and picnic areas complete with shelters and grills.
Just minutes away, Lake Kakusha offers a quieter escape. This 104-acre wildlife refuge is ideal for fishing, picnicking, or simply enjoying the peaceful beauty of a more secluded natural setting.
A short drive southeast leads to Snyders Grove Nature Area, a 98-acre space perfect for exploring and reconnecting with nature. Within the city, additional parks, including Apple Orchard Park, Strouss Park, and
Blackstone Park, provide even more options for outdoor fun. Families will find playgrounds and picnic shelters at Apple Orchard and Blackstone, while Blackstone also features public tennis courts. Strouss Park serves as a hub of activity with its swimming pool, basketball courts, ball diamonds, playgrounds, and well-equipped picnic areas.
For young athletes, Mendota offers a strong lineup of youth sports programs. Little League provides baseball and softball opportunities for ages 6–12, along with senior league play for older teens. Additional options like youth soccer, wrestling, and junior tackle football keep kids active year-round.
Fitness and wellness opportunities continue at the Mendota YMCA, where residents can take advantage of group fitness classes, health seminars, screenings in partnership with OSF Saint Paul Medical Center, and personalized training. The Y also supports families with programs like Adventure Camp, after-school care, and youth leagues in basketball, volleyball, and NFL flag football.
Recreation extends beyond the parks as well. The Mendota Elks Lodge is home
to six sanctioned bowling lanes, offering both league and open play. Just west of town, the Mendota Golf Club features an 18-hole course with affordable rates, along with league play, a pro shop, and a full-service clubhouse.
For something a little different, nearby Triumph is home to the Waltham Curling Club, where visitors can try their hand at curling on a three-lane ice sheet during the winter months.
Outdoor enthusiasts also benefit from Mendota’s proximity to some of Illinois’ most popular state parks. Starved Rock State Park offers miles of trails through stunning canyons and bluff-top views, along with camping, fishing, and boating. Buffalo Rock State Park provides sweeping views of the Illinois River and a chance to see live buffalo, while Matthiessen State Park is known for its dramatic rock formations and waterfalls. The nearby Canal State Trail adds even more opportunities for hiking, biking, and snowmobiling throughout the seasons.
Whether you’re looking for high-energy recreation or a quiet place to recharge, Mendota offers something for everyone — right in your backyard.
OTHER CULTURAL & RECREATIONAL FACILITIES:
The Hume-Carnegie Museum contains an extensive photographic collection covering more than 150 years of the area’s history, Wild Bill Hickok memorabilia, items fashioned by various Mendota industries, and changing exhibits dealing with Native American items, local sports, and military displays.
Union Depot Railroad Museum, located in a restored part of an 1888 depot, contains an HO train layout showing 1930s Mendota in life-like detail, and outdoor rolling stock, including the CB & Q #4978 steam locomotive.
The Breaking of the Prairie Museum is housed in a replica barn with glass walls for open viewing and is also comprised of another building – a prairie chapel.
There is a 2,000-seat gymnasium at Mendota Township High School for viewing of sporting events. The high school also has a 524-seat auditorium for not only school productions and symphony, jazz, and choral concerts, but also productions put on by the Mendota Community Theatre Group and musicals by 3M Productions, a group comprised of talented residents, representing Mendota High School, Mendota Education Association, and the Mendota Community Theatre.
Education
Mendota is served by two school districts – Mendota Elementary School District #289 and Mendota Township High School District #280.
Mendota Elementary School District #289 has three elementary schools. The District 289 Education Center holds Preschool Special Education classrooms, speech and physical therapy classrooms, and administrative offices. The total enrollment of the District #289 schools is over 1,100.
BLACKSTONE SCHOOL
This school, where the youngest members of the school district can learn and have fun, is for kindergarten and first grade. It has a media center, library, and computer lab.
LINCOLN SCHOOL
Lincoln School serves students in second grade, third grade, and fourth grade. Like Blackstone, it has a media center, library, and computer lab. In each classroom, it also has computers.
NORTHBROOK SCHOOL
This school serves fifth-grade elementary students and sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade middle school students. It has a media center, mobile laptops, and desktop PCs. With many extracurricular opportunities, the school hosts basketball and volleyball games, band, choral concerts, and other community activities.
MENDOTA TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT #280
The high school has an enrollment of 488 students and offers many opportunities for students, both in academics and extracurricular activities. The school offers dual credit coursework in conjunction with Illinois Valley Community College, FFA activities, and fine arts.
The students of MHS learn in a 1:1 technology environment with Chromebooks. The high school, built in 2003, includes a complete outdoor athletic and co-curricular complex that is utilized by physical education classes, agriculture greenhouse and Waldorf Agricultural Center, as well as athletic activities of football, soccer, track, baseball, softball, and tennis.
HOLY CROSS SCHOOL
Holy Cross offers pre-school enrichment and a parochial grade school, with an enrollment of 180, for students in
preschool through eighth grade. It’s known for its academic excellence, a safe environment, and many extracurricular and sports activities.
They offer a faith-based education, an advanced technology program, small class sizes, and strive to challenge each student to reach full potential through spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, and physical development. They offer a yearround Child Care Program as well.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS SCHOOL OF CHRISTIAN EXCELLENCE
Northern Illinois School of Christian Excellence is a small private Christian school that has a low student/teacher ratio. The staff at the school places a high emphasis on critical thinking, while encouraging them to study the Scriptures. The school can accept students ranging from preschool through high school. The high school offers college prep courses, foreign languages, athletic training and competition, as well as travel opportunities throughout the U.S.

Churches & Organizations
Eleven churches, many of them in beautifully built, historic buildings, represent various denominations. The congregations sponsor social clubs and a variety of youth-oriented activities, including a community Vacation Bible School.
More than 50 civic, fraternal, and social organizations and clubs are active and meet regularly. These groups, with their many caring volunteers and community spirit, maintain and improve the quality of life in Mendota.
Health Care
The OSF HealthCare Saint Paul Medical Center, located on East 12th Street, has been serving the community since 1951. This nonprofit, 25-bed Critical Access Hospital provides high-quality care close to home. Its active medical staff includes 16 physicians specializing in family medicine and general surgery, supported by allied health professionals, consulting physicians, and contracted providers to ensure a wide range of expertise.
The medical center offers a variety of outpatient specialty clinics, including cardiology, neurology, nephrology, oncology, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonology, urology, and wound care — giving patients access to specialized treatment without the need to travel far.
Residents benefit from comprehensive hospital services, including 24/7 emergency care staffed by physicians around the clock. Additional departments include a medical-surgical unit, a fourbed intensive care unit, day surgery and surgical services, laboratory services,
rehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary care, including cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Diagnostic imaging services are available at all hours and include advanced technology such as MRI, CT scanning with fluoroscopy, ultrasound, mammography, and nuclear medicine imaging.
With a team of more than 200 employees, the hospital plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of the Mendota community.
Beyond the hospital, Mendota and the surrounding area offer a variety of healthcare options. Davis Family Health provides primary care services, including physicals and routine healthcare, along with additional wellness offerings such as massage therapy, allergy treatments, vitamin injections, and aesthetic services. Community Health Partnership expands access to care through services like cancer screenings, family planning, primary and oral healthcare, and community outreach programs.
Just a short drive away in DeKalb, Compassus offers in-home healthcare services designed to support independence and dignity. From IV therapy to compassionate end-of-life care, their services allow patients to receive care in the comfort of their own homes.
Mendota is also home to quality senior living and long-term care. Residents benefit from private suites, skilled nursing care, and access to physical, occupational, and speech therapies.
Stonecroft Village Retirement Community offers a peaceful setting with both independent and assisted living options. Its resident-focused approach ensures supportive services in a comfortable and caring environment.
Together, these facilities and providers create a strong, well-rounded healthcare network — ensuring Mendota residents have access to quality care at every stage of life.
Business & Industry
With a solid industrial base, Mendota affords opportunities to growing companies, both new and existing. Numerous highly diversified manufacturing plants, most with international distribution, currently provide a good share of jobs for the men and women of Mendota.
Area industrial and business employers benefit from the proximity of training programs provided through Illinois Valley Community College.
Through the use of incentives, new industry is continually drawn to the Mendota area. There are area Tax Increment Financing Districts to assist in financing new development and improve infrastructure. The city administration and an Economic Development Department are focused on planned growth and productive expansion. Mendota’s financial institutions are also prepared to lend strong support to new business.
Mendota’s Business Park has a flexible development plan to attract firms needing small to large acreage sites. The city-owned park offers competitive land costs and excellent location advantages. It is located on the east side of Mendota adjacent to Interstate 39. Sites include service by rail line Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, close proximity to I-80 and I-88, and municipal water and sewer to the property line.

Tourism
Mendota has become well-known for its largest tourist event – the Annual Sweet Corn Festival. This event is always held on the second full weekend in August and brings 40,000 people to Mendota to join in on the fun and to eat some delicious, sweet corn.
The festival offers free entertainment every day that appeals to young and old festival attendees. In addition to that, there are balloon twisters, magicians, professional face painters, a queen pageant, and musical entertainment, running the range from classic rock-nroll to country. There is a carnival on the midways and a crafter’s marketplace and flea market with beautiful handmade crafts, arts, antiques, and collectibles.
For adult entertainment, there is a beer garden in the evening featuring high-energy live bands. On the Sunday of the festival, the grand parade is always a big crowd-pleaser as it makes its way down Mendota’s tree-lined streets. The parade features drill teams, bands, Shrine groups, antique farm implements, floats, and performers.
The food at the festival is outstanding, with food booths lining the streets and offering ethnic, regional, and festival foods. The “big event” is when the free, hot, buttered sweet corn is served, which takes place on Sunday afternoon. All that sweet corn is cooked in an antique steam traction engine before it is served by the Mendota Area
Chamber of Commerce and numerous volunteers. The corn is dripping with butter and salted to your personal taste.

FOOD TRUCK MAINIA MONDAYS
On the second and fourth Monday evenings of each month from May through October, food trucks can be found at 800 Illinois Avenue. The event, run by Reimagine Mendota, hosts six to ten trucks
THE MENDOTA MUSEUM & HISTORICAL SOCIETY
This society presents a Railroad Crossing & Country Fair event on Father’s Day weekend at Mendota’s Union Depot Railroad Museum and the Breaking of the Prairie Museum. Featuring old-time demonstrations, a tractor show, and tours of both museums, it gives visitors a glimpse into Mendota’s historical railroad and agricultural past.
3M MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS
3M Musical Productions hosts an annual musical on the first weekend in August. Talented performers from Mendota and the surrounding area, representing the Mendota Education Association, Mendota High School, and the Mendota Community Theatre, produce first-class musicals such as “Grease,” “Cats,” “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Footloose.”
MENDOTA FIREWORKS CELEBRATION
The last Saturday of June, the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce hosts a wonderful fireworks display along with food trucks and activities at Lake Mendota.
