Fighting for You: SGKR’s Four-Decade Legacy of Justice in the Illinois Valley

When life takes an unexpected turn — a workplace accident, a serious injury, or a devastating diagnosis — having the right legal team in your corner can make all the difference. Schweickert, Ganassin, Krzak and Rundio, LLP (SGKR) now known to the area as SGKR Injury Law has been that team for Illinois Valley residents since 1977, building a reputation as one of the region’s most trusted personal injury and workers’ compensation firms.

With offices in Peru, Ottawa, Morris, and Chicago, SGKR Injury Law is never far when you need them most.

DEEP ROOTS, PROVEN RESULTS

Nearly 50 years of advocacy doesn’t happen by accident. SGKR Injury Law has earned its standing in the Illinois Valley through decades of genuine commitment to the people they represent. The firm’s attorneys

bring more than 70 years of combined experience to every case — experience that translates directly into better outcomes for clients navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

At SGKR Injury Law, legal representation goes beyond courtrooms and case files. The firm’s attorneys understand that injury victims are often overwhelmed — physically, emotionally, and financially. That’s why they place equal emphasis on guiding clients through the process as they do on fighting aggressively for the compensation those clients deserve.

COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

SGKR Injury Law handles the full spectrum of personal injury cases, including workers’ compensation claims, car and truck accidents, slip and fall incidents, medical malpractice, nursing home

abuse, and wrongful death lawsuits. Whatever the circumstances, the firm’s approach is the same: personalized attention combined with relentless legal advocacy tailored to each client’s unique situation.

SPECIALIZED MESOTHELIOMA REPRESENTATION

Among SGKR’s most important work is their specialized representation of mesothelioma victims and their families. These cases demand a rare combination of complex legal knowledge, medical understanding, and genuine compassion — and it’s a combination SGKR Injury Law has developed and refined over many years of practice. For families confronting an asbestos-related diagnosis, SGKR Injury Law provides not just legal expertise, but a steady, knowledgeable guide through extraordinarily difficult terrain.

JUSTICE SHOULDN’T DEPEND ON YOUR FINANCES

One of the hallmarks of SGKR’s community-focused philosophy is their commitment to accessibility. The firm offers free case evaluations, ensuring that quality legal representation is available to anyone who needs it — regardless of financial circumstances. It’s a reflection of the same values that have kept SGKR Injury Law serving Illinois Valley families for nearly five decades. If you or someone you love is dealing with a personal injury, workplace accident, or mesothelioma diagnosis, SGKR Injury Law offers the experience, dedication, and compassionate support to help you move forward. Visit SGKRLAW.COM to learn more or schedule your free consultation. For personal injury matters, call 815-640-SGKR (7457). For mesothelioma-related cases, call 815-640-MESO (6376).

Theos Audiology Solutions: Committed to Finding the Best Hearing Solution

Hearing loss is more than a nuisance. It’s a loss of communication. It’s the feeling of missing out, wondering what was the joke that was missed, what was the funny story someone just shared.

Studies show that hearing loss can affect the brain and cognitive abilities. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline, depression and anxiety.

Time and again, the team at Theos Audiology Solutions hears its patients question why they waited so long to commit to a hearing solution and regain their life and joy.

Dr. Kendra Theodosopoulos is committed to helping her clients find the best hearing solution. She is proud to serve the Illinois Valley, where she was born, raised and continues to call home for her own family. She has built a successful practice with locations in Peru, Galesburg and Streator, serving patients throughout the Illinois Valley.

Dr. Kendra Theodosopoulos enjoys family time with her husband and son. Don’t let hearing loss steal away family time, visit her offices in Streator, Peru and Galesburg to learn how to navigate hearing loss and take back the joy in life.

Last year her husband, Bill, joined the practice bringing his years of experience in the field of engineering to Theos Audiology Solutions as a hearing instrument specialist trainee as he works toward his license. Last year Tyler Swedeen also joined the practice as a hearing instrument specialist in the Peru and Streator locations.

One of the first faces most patients meet is Maricia Cocanour, the patient care coordinator and audiology assistant, who has been with the practice since the beginning and previously with Connect Hearing. Kennedi

Hear Every Word. Effortlessly.

Clark is another friendly face who serves as the patient care coordinator for the Galesburg location.

Dr. Theodosopoulos became an audiologist to help people maintain communication and stay active and healthy in their lives.

“We want to help our patients bring back those activities they love and regain the joys in their life, like attending a music concert, spending time with loved ones,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.

Technology has made hearing aids sleeker, smaller and more versatile. Some make it possible to take calls, answer text messages and listen to music. Hearing devices have improved functions to reduce background noises and help with speech clarification. Clients can return to the activities they love, like dining out without the clatter of rattling dishes or playing pickleball without voice echoes in the gymnasium.

At Theos Audiology Solutions patients can count on continued care through their journey, from initial exams and a device fitting to continued follow-up and maintenance.

“We treat you like family and we want to make sure you are happy,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.

IVAC remains a driving force in business and community

Over the past 115 years, the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce (IVAC) has remained a driving force behind business growth and community development across LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties. As the needs of businesses continue to evolve in 2026, IVAC has expanded its impact by introducing more than 20 innovative programs and initiatives over the past several years, each shaped directly by member feedback and regional priorities.

One of IVAC’s cornerstone programs, the Illinois Valley Community Leadership Academy (IVCLA), continues to grow in both reach and impact. Designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders, the academy connects participants with influential business and community figures while offering hands-on leadership training, expanded mentorship opportunities, and collaborative capstone projects that address real community challenges. Recent cohorts have focused on workforce

development, downtown revitalization, and nonprofit partnerships, all creating lasting value across the Illinois Valley.

Supporting entrepreneurship remains a top priority, and not just by providing ribbon cuttings. IVAC has continued to build on the success of Lemonade Day, a youth entrepreneurship program developed to teach grade school students how to create and run a business. The program has served more than 500 students since its start and helped them earn more than $15,000 dollars.

IVAC has also strengthened

businesses and communities

its role as a regional convener through new initiatives. These include programs like the BREW Crew, Regional Executive Round Table, and joint chamber seminars. These programs are designed to help businesses share experiences and make connections with others across the region.

Recognizing excellence continues to be a hallmark of IVAC’s work. Signature programs like the 40 Under Forty and Community Cornerstone Awards continue to allow the amazing work being done by individuals across the area the spotlight they deserve. These

celebrations not only honor achievement but also inspire continued growth and collaboration throughout the region.

Professional development offerings by the chamber have continued to evolve. IVAC now offers expanded access to leadership training, including DiSC assessments and workshops led by Executive Director Bill Zens, along with new offerings and seminars focused on needs shared by members. These resources help organizations strengthen teams and build resilient workplaces.

Looking ahead, IVAC continues to invest in regional growth through partnerships, advocacy, and forward-thinking programming.

“Everything we do is driven by the voices of our members and the needs of our communities,” Zens said.

With a clear focus on innovation, collaboration, and impact, IVAC remains committed to helping businesses succeed and strengthen the Illinois Valley for years to come.

Quality Care Cleaning turns 30

Three decades. For Tami Thomas-Leonatti it can seem like an entirely different lifetime ago when she helped launch Quality Care Cleaning, her family business that turns 30 this year.

Flipping through newspaper clippings, looking back at old photos she remembers the excitement she felt in 1996 when she and her first husband launched Quality Care Cleaning to provide janitorial services in the Illinois Valley. In business, as in life there have been ups and downs, challenges and new opportunities, and through it all family and community have remained at the center of it all.

After her first husband died, Thomas-Leonatti decided to continue managing the business on her own while raising her young family. She calls it a blessing to find love a second time, and in finding Greg,

she found another business partner who helped ThomasLeonatti and her children to continue building their brands and companies to satisfy the needs they saw in the Illinois Valley.

Under GTL Enterprises the family business has expanded beyond janitorial cleaning to include janitorial cleaning supplies. Additionally, it has launched the companies Secure Key Solutions, a commercial locksmith business, G & T Rental Group and Management for rental services and Illinois Valley Radon Mitigation.

Answering the needs in the community goes beyond businesses for Thomas-Leonatti. Through her volunteer time with the Ottawa Business Builders, she and Cherie Reynolds stepped up to plan the first Black and White Ball to support the Easter Seals of La

Salle and Bureau Counties in the year 2010. They continued managing the ball for its first five years.

“The community is such a huge part of my business and a huge part of me giving back,” Thomas-Leonatti said.

Thomas-Leonatti isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Concern for the health and safety of her staff and clients, she moved her company to complete the RMC Green Cleaning Program in 2006.

“We were one of the first janitorial services to promote Green Cleaning in our area,” Thomas-Leonatti said.

Her employees become part of the family, like Lorrie Lauf, director of operations who keeps things moving in the right direction, ThomasLeonatti said.

When she launched the business 30 years ago, her youngest son was still in

preschool. Today, he helps manage one of the family companies and Thomas-Leonatti is working to support the next generation in her family. She’s working toward the goal of launching a nonprofit childcare center. In welcoming her grandchildren, Thomas-Leonatti has come to recognize a tremendous deficit in childcare providers in the Illinois Valley. With more childcare resources, parents can work and support their families.

For Thomas-Leonatti, her work on the latest company is fitting in that family has always been at the core of her life.

“My legacy that I want to leave is putting my family first because they’re the reason I do this,” Thomas-Leonatti said. “Second, I want my legacy for that of giving and my love of the community because of all they have given to me and my family.”

Details, passion drive staff at Carpet Weavers

Details matter to Annette and Kevin Fischer, owners of Carpet Weavers Flooring & Furniture Gallery location in Peru. When a customer finds the flooring they want in their home, it’s often Kevin Fischer visiting the home and to take the measurements himself. With 46 years of experience in flooring installation, he’s known for his detailed work.

“He’s very good at custom fitting and adding those details that make the flooring look amazing,” said Annette Fischer.

When Carpet Weaver founder Mark Weaver approached his top-rated installer with the business opportunity to open a store location in the Peru-LaSalle area it seemed a bit daunting at first, Annette Fischer recalled. She was from the tiny town of Roanoke, IL and was offering interior design help while raising the couple’s six children. With her eye for design and his top-notch installation skills, the pair took a leap of faith and opened the store 10 years ago.

It wasn’t easy, competing with other long-time businesses and big box stores, but the couple maintained the Carpet Weaver promise, providing custom-

ers with a large selection and standing behind their work to keep customers.

“Flooring is a big ticket purchase and we want to help our customers make the most of their dollars and find the right look, product and fit for their home and lifestyle,” Annette Fischer said.

In the beautiful flooring gallery find luxury vinyl, laminate, hardwood, tile and carpet. The Fishers strive to provide customers with the largest selection in products to meet every style, every budget. With fellow designer Tony Gende, Annette Fischer will bring samples for free in-home design consultations.

“We can make a room come alive and make it look beautiful,” Annette Fischer said. “I really do love my job. I love people and I love helping people.”

Stop into Carpet Weavers of Peru and see Annette Fischer and Tony Gende.

Al Cioni Ford

Congratulations to Al Cioni Ford on achieving the prestigious 2025 Ford President’s Award, on behalf of Ford Motor Company. Sixty years ago, technology looked very different. Com puters filled rooms, not pock ets. Networks existed only in government labs. And in 1966, right here in North Cen tral Illinois, Connecting Point began its journey—one built on curiosity, craftsmanship, and a simple belief: technol ogy should make life easier, not harder.

In those early days, customers came to us with questions that felt brand new because they were brand new. What’s a personal computer? How does software work? Can this machine really help my business? And our team—small but determined—made it their mission to provide answers, solutions, and the kind of patient guidance that only a true local business can offer.

As the world changed, so did we. When home computers became commonplace, we were there to help families adopt their first desktops. When the Internet arrived, we helped businesses get

City of Mendota working to revitalize business

City of Mendota is working to revitalize business and enhance the beauty in downtown Mendota. Two new murals created by professional artists will be a big boost for this effort.

After months of planning, and with support from the Mendota Art Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, artists Justin Suarez from upper New York and Audrey Carver from Minneapolis will create one-of-akind murals.

The nature-themed mural at 907 Washington St. will be painted on the north and east side of the Frontier building. The mural painted on the north side of the YSB building at 728 Main St., will be an Audubon project and will depict endangered birds, flowers and a welcome to Mendota sign.

Work is scheduled to begin in June and culminate in the community’s Painted Wings and Wild Things Art Festival scheduled for Sunday, June 14, taking place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Mendota. Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy

the murals, art show, live wildlife raptor exhibit and other activities. For full details visit Mendota.il.us/arts.

One way for visitors to enjoy the new art will be the return of Food Truck Mania on the second and fourth Mondays and Night Markets on the fourth Monday of the month in May through October. Night Markets will include a variety of vendors as well as many of the downtown retailers staying open late.

Along with the beauty the City of Mendota is excited to

welcome new dining and retail shops into the area including those in the downtown area.

To further advance economic vitality and a strong business culture, the City of Mendota has established a Business Association that will meet bi-monthly. The Mendota Chamber of Commerce will host Business After Hours bimonthly. The intent of these two additions is to provide space for communication, networking and development.

The City of Mendota continues to utilize its Façade Grants

to assist businesses with the financial costs of improving the exterior of their property. Additionally, the City of Mendota supports a Revolving Loan Fund, established by the Community Development Assistance program to spur job creation and retention. Two new campaigns , “Shop Mendota” and “Meet in Mendota” are other pieces to strengthen community connections and enhance tourism.

Improvements aren’t limited to the downtown, work is set to continue with improvements at Strouss Park, including a new playground, an additional basketball court, new dugouts, additional restrooms and a new walking path. The project is to be completed by 2027. The park improvements have been funded with an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant. The city is also working on the design for the 1.9 mile bike path from the train depot to the lakes to be completed in 2028 and funded through an Illinois Transportation Expansion Project grant.
