Did you know there are still movie theaters around where your parking spot is also your seat? That’s right, drive-ins haven’t gone the way of the Edsel. Their screens are still reaching for the stars and they’re still pulling in audiences who can’t get enough of having a blast with the past — and some of them aren’t that far from Lake Carroll. If you’re reading this and wondering what a drive-in is, then you’re probably part of a cell phone cinema generation that downloads instead of down-shifts to see a film, or maybe you’ve heard your grandparents talk about hanging a speaker on a car window and watching Hollywood’s magic show on the silver screen. But there was a time when cars and stars were all the rage.
At their peak during the 1950s and ’60s, more than 4,000 drive-ins dotted the landscape across the U.S. Visiting one was a favorite pastime for families who wanted to spend some time together (and teens who wanted to spend some time alone). While their story stretches back as far as the early 1900s, the drive-in wasn’t patented until 1933.

A few decades later they had taken on a starring role in the movie-going experience; but by the 1970s, the rising cost of real estate, the growing number of more modern indoor theaters, and later, home video. curbed people’s enthusiasm for drive-ins. Today, there are only about 325; of those, Illinois has nine (with one currently inactive), as does Wisconsin, and Iowa has four. Of those, three are only a day trip away and a night trip back from Lake Carroll. But despite those dwindling numbers, drive-ins still hold a special place in American culture. There’s a certain something about seeing the stars under the stars — loading up the lawn chairs and blankets and piling the family into the Ford to see the latest flick flicker across a screen rising from the countryside, breathing in the fresh air, watching friends and families share the movie-going experience. Watching from the back of a truck, stretched out in a van, or snuggling in the back seat. And with the advent of digital projectors and sound broadcast on the FM band, gone are the days of fuzzy films and tin-sounding speakers hung on windows. Drive-ins have even been featured prominently in popular films, including “Grease,” where Danny and Sandy have an argument; “The Outsiders,” where the Greasers sneak in to one; and at the end of “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure,” with a mockumentary of Pee-Wee Herman’s own life and his crusade to find his stolen bicycle. Most drive-ins offer double features, with ticket prices comparable to the cost of just one movie at a regular theater. It’s a bargain for the customer, but drive-ins are willing to pay the price. Film studios get much of the ticket revenue and drive-ins rely on concessions to boost their bottom line and keep the “Now Showing” signs up. So if you’re ready for a retro ride, load up the car and get ready for headlights, camera, and action — golly, it’ll be swell!

Midway Drive-in Theater
Located on the historic Lincoln Highway, the Midway Drive-In opened in 1950, and is home to the oldest standing drive-in screen in Illinois. The road it’s on once was the major traffic link between the two cities, but a four-lane highway built a decade after the theater opened put the Midway “off the beaten path.” The parking lot can hold up to 500 cars in 11 rows with as many as a couple thousand people viewing the 90-foot-wide screen. Though unused, the old speaker pods still stand to give that retro vibe. Once showing strictly firstrun features, owners Mike and Mia Kerz of Niles have also shown classic films and hosted special themed events since they bought it in 2007.

A pair of booths are available for those who want to grab a seat and eat. While there, you can read the Dixon Evening Telegraph ad from Aug. 22, 1950, announcing the grand opening of the “new and beautiful” Midway Drive-In. In a sign of the times, when people would still get dressed up to go to the theater, the ad invited people to “come just as you are.” Another sign of the times: Two cartoons opened each show. The Kerzes also operate the Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention and have brought a taste of that to the Midway screen in recent years, including one event in 2020 with an appearance by Bruce Campbell of the “Evil Dead” trilogy. Several reminders of earlier days remain a part of the Midway experience. The old animated short intermission films with dancing snacks lead in to each feature presentation. The black-and-white chessboard floor remains squeaky clean in the concession building, where old movie posters grace the walls. One of the posters is a copy of its opening week advertisement: The first film was 1949’s Technicolor “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” starring Frank Sinatra, Esther Williams and Gene Kelly. The Midway, like many drive-in theaters in the last 10 to 15 years, converted from film reels to digital projection. It was a costly, but critical investment, as movie studios ceased production of movies on film. Some drive-ins nationwide couldn’t afford the change — which involved more than $100,000 worth of upgrades — and closed, despite their best efforts to keep them alive.

In 2014, the Kerzes ran a Kickstarter fundraiser to help with the transition, but that effort fell short of their goals. Despite that, they bit the bullet and dug in to invest in a digital projector. They’ve kept the old 35mm projector off to the side, though, which shows classic horror films and an occasional digitally restored horror classic at its annual Dusk to Dawn Horror Fests in October. While the concession stand serves up several theater favorites of popcorn, candy, nachos, hot dogs, burgers and pizza, it also allows customers to bring their own food with them, for a $10 fee. The nightly food permits were an idea stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic when its concession stands was closed for 2 years, before they reopened for this season. Just 8 years after converting to digital, the investment has paid off and the Midway continues to survive as one of three movie theaters within a 5-mile drive of one another when including two traditional theaters in Sterling. In addition to having a drive-up ticket booth, advance tickets and food permits can be ordered in advance at themidwaydrivein.net, where donations to keep the theater operating also can be made. Private parties also can be arranged.

Sky-Vu
Just 4 1/2 miles north of the Illinois-Wisconsin border — where Illinois state Route 26 turns into Wisconsin state Route 69 — is the Sky-Vu, built in 1954. In 2012, the theater was one of the earliMONROE, WISCONSIN est drive-ins to convert to digital projection. Sky-Vu is one of the few drive-in theaters to have been owned by the same family since it opened. Brothers Robert and Nathan Goetz opened the drive-in to expand the Monroe area’s theater offerings from the family-owned Goetz Theater downtown, itself founded by brothers Chester and Leon Goetz in 1931. The third and fourth generations of the Goetz Family continues to operate the drivein, which has always been the only one in the state southwest of Madison, Wisconsin’s capitol.

At a little more than 100 feet, Sky-Vu’s screen is among the largest in the Midwest, with eight rows of parking. It’s also one of the cheesiest, too — when it comes to its pizza. It’s in Wisconsin, what else would you expect? The Sky-Vu Pizza (photo at right) is a multicheese blend with a thin crust, with a variety of toppings available. Be sure to bring cash when visiting, as it’s the only form of payment accepted for tickets and concessions. No carry-in food is allowed.
Route 61
Like the Midway, the 61 Drive-In — which also opened DELMAR, IOWA in 1950 — is on a road that now has become less of a beaten path. Located west of Delmar and south of Maquoketa, the road once carried U.S. Route 61 between Dubuque and the Quad Cities, but a four-lane highway was built in recent decades to divert travelers away from the old road, but not too far. Even though fewer cars zoom by the theater on the two-lane road, plenty of people still find the drive-in. In fact, the drive-in is observing a milestone this season: Owner Dennis Voy has been in charge of the theater for 50 years; three generations of his family have been a part of its operation since.

20 Years of Service in Lake Carroll
The 61, like many drive-ins, have an area in front of the screen where kids can play before the first film. The area has a swing set, sandbox, tether ball poles, and spaces for whiffle ball, basketball and volleyball. If the kids want to explore more of the drive-in, they can do that too, with a “train” ride around the perimeter. The parking area is slightly sloped downward on grass, but cars are parked on small bumps in order for their view to even out. In all, there are eight rows of parking, with the back four high enough to peer over the concession and projection building in the middle. If the stalls are full, no problem: Moviegoers can park outside, bring a lawn chair and get a ticket to watch the movie. The drive-in also lets customers bring their own food, but there’s a concession stand to help support its operations. In addition to the typical staples, 61 also sells a “taco in a bag” — taco ingredients in a small potato chip bag that are eaten with a spoon — barbecue pulled pork sandwiches and macaroni and cheese (a new menu item for this season). A limited number of portable radios can be rented as well; also sold are insect repellents and batteries.

ood things can happen when people come together. Just look at Lake Carroll. People from different backgrounds and walks of life came together 50 years ago and created a community. That same year, some of those people formed a club to help people in the community come together. Fifty years later, they’re still bringing people together, and they’re still making good things happen. The Lake Carroll Women’s Club grew from a seed planted the same year the community itself was created, and like the community itself, it just kept growing. The club brings members together for service, knowledge and friendship, creating a network of ideas, strengths and know-how that gives members a place to meet and greet new friends and old, and provides them with a way to give something back to their community.

The Women’s Club first met in 1999, but its origins reach back farther than that, all the way back to 1972, when the Lake’s first Social Committee was formed. The mission then was simple: Get people out of their homes and help them get to know each other through meetings and community events. Through the years, the group grew and took on different names as its mission evolved. It began to look beyond the simple social aspect, to Lake Carroll and beyond. Today, the group has grown into a non-profit, philanthropic organization that, according to its mission statement, works to “develop intellectual opportunities, social fellowship, community service and charitable endeavors.” Through fundraisers to support local causes and Raismonthly meetings, the club has given members a place ing money for where they can find friends and find a purpose. Club secretary Pat Bykowski enjoys seeing how the club brings together fun, friendship and fundraising. “We have a great group of women,” Bykowski said. “There’s a lot of camaraderie and we have a lot of fun together.” The club’s three pillars — knowledge, fellowship and philanthropy — have supported a lot of causes through the years. Meetings are held September to June, so as not to interfere with peak vacation months during the rest of the summer. Meetings can involve speeches, hands-on demonstrations, and presentations by members and special guests. Past programs have included presentations by Master Gardeners, local authors, chefs and public officials. Most meetings are at Plumtree Lodge, but sometimes one will he held offsite. Each year’s schedule of programs has a certain theme to it. The 2020-21 theme was “a year of gratitude,” with programs centered around being grateful for various things, ideas and aspects of everyday life, such as being an American, a freedom of expression, having friends, being kind, and the joy of socializing. The 202122 season that wrapped up in June involved “leading with kindness,” to show how different methods of generosity can help others in new and exciting ways. The club’s vice president is usually in charge of arranging the events, most often with input and buy-in from members. Tammie Farley, this year’s second-in-charge, already has next season’s theme figured out: “sharing within the community.”

“I’ve been talking with a lot of the members and they’re going to step up and do a program,” Farley said. “Our first program usually is with the Lake Carroll Association and the general manager, so Calvin [White] will be with us for our September program. He wants to work with us to talk about our 50-year legacy and what our future looks like.” Other topics on tap and events for the coming season include a brewery tour, “pampered chef” cooking ideas, and stories about visits to national parks presented by a resident who, Farley said, has been to all but a few so far. The Christmas luncheon in December is usually well-attended, and Farley hopes to bring something new to it this year: a Lake Carroll Association Holiday Chorus to add some holiday harmonies to the event. “We always really have a nice luncheon,” Farley said. “The luncheon entails women who volunteer their Christmas dishes and decoration, and they set the table in their own unique way. Sometimes one or two people come together to put the tables together. It’s always really been a well-attended meeting.” Along with other Lake Carroll clubs, the Women’s Club has several standing committees of smaller teams that focus on certain aspects of club functions. Three of the more visible ones are a Program Committee, which plans programs at each of the meetings that are of interest to club members; a Ways and Means Committee, which organizes fundraisers to support its charitable goals; and Allocations Committee that determines which charities to contribute to and how much to donate — the only requirement being that they support Carroll County.
The club prides itself on being open to all sorts of ideas, and members pride themselves on seeing those ideas through. Oliver said that oftentimes members come up with more than enough ideas, and rarely is there any real recruitment effort; members step in on their own and step up to get things done. She added that taking a more low-key approach can help, too. “I don’t want the ladies to feel like I’m coming at them all of the time to do stuff,” Oliver said. “I know that sometimes in the past, members felt that every time they turned around the Women’s Club was asking for something. I didn’t want that.” The club’s major fundraisers are in the spring and fall of each year, and there’s no shortage of help. The craft show in November at the Clubhouse brings together several vendors from the Lake and beyond who rent tables to sell their creations, all while club members coordinate a bake sale. Spring’s fundraiser can have various themes; the most recent one was Dancing at the Derby on May 7 at Plumtree. Members also take part in other community events and annual occasions. One example: Several members made and sold cocoa bombs at Lake Carroll’s tube hill this past winter. All the money raised by the club goes back to the community and club’s causes — club treasurer Roseanne Stangl sees to that. She works with the Allocations Committee to ensure all the funds go to organizations that need the most help. With all that has been going on with the world, and community, in the past couple of years with the COVID-19 pandemic, members have sharpened their focus on determining who needs what the most.

“The pandemic caused us to focus on things that were more affected by the pandemic,” Stangl said. One consistent beneficiary over the years has been the Shannon-Lanark Food Pantry. For many years, that club organized parties, potlucks, hoedowns, card parties, costume parties and similar get-togethers in order to help residents get acquainted. After awhile, several women in the club began to look beyond just the club, to the community as whole, and eventually into nearby communities. From that came the idea to join the North Otter Creek Livewires group of the Carroll County Homemakers Extension Association.

Many programs and endeavors through the Homemakers Extension catered toward women, with emphasis on home life, health, gardening, family and finances. Lake Carroll women were able to take what they learned from that partnership and use it to establish their own group, the Lake Carroll Can-do’s, in 1991, and later the Women’s Club in 1999. In 2007, Vicker took time to write a detailed history of the club, complete to that time with its origins, endeavors, charities it has assisted and highlighting the remarkable volunteers who brought creativity to the fold and made the club better (Vicker’s history appeared in the September 2020 issue of Lake Lifestyle). What she wrote Hattie Vicker then still holds true today: “Not until participation does one realize the profound effect of life at Lake Carroll.” Vicker passed away in 2015, and while she may be gone, the people she got to know through her years in Women’s Club, such as Davies, are carrying on her legacy. “Every time I meet someone new, they mean something,” Davies said. “The way they look at me, the way they treat me, everyone is special. Many of them have been to college and around the world, but not me. So everything, for me, is huge. The people here enjoy the fact that they have things they can share, the knowledge they have that they can bring to us, and every one of these ladies has done something here to make it grow.”

uring a child’s roadside adventure, there’s one word on a sign that will get them to whip their head around, widen their eyes and start asking mom and dad: “Can we stop?! Can we stop?! Can we stop?!” Toys. That one word can spark the imagination and get any kid fired up for fun — put a toy in their hand and you’ll put a smile on their face, and you can do both at a shop in Lena. All you have to do is head through the village on state Route 73 and stop at Down on the Farm Toys and More, a place where people in the driver’s seat can give their back seats full of bubbling energy a lot to smile about. More than 3,000 square feet of toys, puzzles and decor greet wideeyed kids and customers, with much of the merchandise rooted in farming — but like the sign says, there’s more. Folks will find Hot Wheels, Legos, Fisher-Price toys, Barbies and selections from the Melissa and Doug line. You’ll also find David and Enola Troxell, the couple behind the toy counter who are keeping the toy store tradition alive and well in the little village about 12 miles north of Lake Carroll. You’ll also find something else at the store, and a lot of them: smiles. The Troxells have seen countless kids get giddy over the gobs of toys and more on their shelves during the 15 years they’ve been in business — and that’s one of the best parts about their job. “It’s fun to do when you see the kids’ eyes open so wide when the first come in,” Enola said. “When they come in and see all of the toys, sometimes they can get a little overwhelmed I think.”

The fact that the shop has lasted so long gives fans of toy stores something to smile about, too. Toy stores were a more common site decades ago, found in downtowns big and small, but these days it’s harder to find one. Big box stores and online sales have made it hard for standalone stores to peddle toys, but Down on the Farm has bucked that trend. The Troxells have managed to stay on top of trends while also stocking items you won’t find in big-box stores. They also know their market — a farm market. Found in the heart of farm country, the couple caters to kids looking for farm toys. The shop gets customers who come from both the country and city, and they both enjoy farm toys. The Troxells have seen many a youngster from the city who’ve had their eye on farm toys, fascinated with the machines that they don’t see on city streets.

“They like what they see every day,” David said. “They see the farmer spreading manure every day, and they want a manure spreader, or maybe their grandpa has a combine.” But it takes more than just farm toys to make a business grow. There’s the “Toys and More” part of their business name, too: cars, trucks, puzzles, dolls, action figures, and more. “We get more toys for everyone else, so it’s more than just farm kids that come in here,” Enola said. “We have games, dolls and puzzles, and try to be unique in what each toy looks like.” The couple’s toy story didn’t begin with Down on the Farm. David grew up on a farm and knows his farm toys, and Enola used to run a children’s retail shop, the Little Peoples Store, during the 1990s. They’re also parents, so they’ve got some firsthand experience in fun for kids. A few years after The Little Peoples Store closed, they started to get the itch to get back in business, so they decided to start a store from scratch. They started selling farm toys at regional toy shows, and that went well enough that it inspired them to plow ahead and start a store of their own. More than a decade later, the couple is still making kids smiles, and making some-
thing else that’s pretty special, too. “We get to make friends, too, and not just customers,” Enola said. “A lot of kids just really get excited.” Speaking of friends, some friendly farm rivalry also plays out on the store’s shelves — and all you have to say is “Are you green or red?” and you’ll know what it is. The store doesn’t take sides, though. There’s room for both colors at Down on the Farm: John Deere green and IH red. New Holland fans will find their blue, too. As for the kids? Well, they’re not too picky. “If it’s green, or it’s red, they want that color,” David said. The store carries most brands of farm toys, such as SpecCast, Bruder, Greenlight, and of course, Ertl — which once was its own popular farm toy company, and now is a brand under the Tomy Company. Kids who are hooked on Fisher-Price toys will find them at Down on the Farm, and there’s a whole herd of farm animals — horses, pigs, ponies, chickens, and more — waiting to find a new home in a child’s toy box.
For some, green tractors are near and Deere to their heart; for others, the policy is: If it ain't red it stays in the shed. But whatever color you prefer, Down on the Farm has got you covered — including blue, too.

For the budding young builders, a fleet of construction vehicles is available — dump trucks, mixers, scoopers and more. Police cars and fire trucks can also be found on the scene. For ones who want to get behind the wheel, the store has rideable toys, too. “Kids see what dad drives, what grandpa drives,” David said, and they want to be just like them. One company has even managed to milk more out of the materials it uses, and its line of toys can be found at Down on the Farm. The Troxells added Green Toys to their inventory last year. Green Toys is a California-based company that makes toys out of recycled milk jugs, which are shredded into flakes, pressed into pellets and molded into parts. While the kids can walk the aisles and let their imagination run wild, the store also has items for the folks who bring the kids to store — farm-themed decor, collectible signs, framed pictures and figurines. For the collector, some premium toys can be found in a glass case. For many, a walk down the aisles is like a

stroll down memory lane. “Over 15 years, we’ve had kids come in and they’ve come back with their kids,” David said. “They’re brand-new kids, and their parents will tell them about how they used to buy toys here when they were younger. Then there are kids who graduated with our kids, and they stop in all of the time.” If you can’t make it to the store, purchases can be made online with plastic or PayPal, at downonthefarmtoys.com and its Facebook page. But there’s still nothing quite like visiting a toy store in person. “We have a couple with a boy and a girl who come to visit their parents every year from Arizona, and they make a point to come here every year,” Enola said. “The boy collects cars and trucks.” It’s experiences like that that make the Troxells proud and happy that they’re doing something they enjoy, and their customers enjoy, too. “It took us a long time to build up the clientele that we have,” Enola said, but that time has been worth the investment. “It’s not about the money,” she said. “Sure, it helps, but we’re here for people.”

Majestic Skyscape is nestled in the rolling hills of Carroll County ’s scenic countryside near Lanark, just a few miles west of Lake Carroll.
new Lanark business is more than just a shop and art gallery — you could even call it a kitchen. It’s where Lois Grove mixes together ingredients from around the world in a melting pot of creativity, talent, imagination and inspiration at Majestic Skyscape. Nestled in the scenic countryside just a couple miles west of Lake Carroll, the shop in rural Lanark opened just a few months ago, on May 17. The art gallery/ store is filled with an eclectic selection of decor, art pieces, and gifts from near and far. Many pieces are handmade and many come with a something extra: a story — and Grove is more than happy to tell the tales. “There’s a story to a lot of it, and it’s waiting to be told,” Grove said. “I’ve had a voyage with every single one of these pieces, and it’s not just by chance with all of these things here.” People will come through the door as customers, but they’ll leave as world travelers, with Grove serving as their tour guide. Grove’s own journey from collector to artist to business owner was one she really hadn’t thought of taking just a few years ago, but once she started down that road she just kept going, and in the process she discovered a whole new world.

She eventually found a place where cultures and creativity could come together under one roof, and it wasn’t far from home. Grove’s commitment to sharing her passion led her to open Majestic Skyscape on land she shares with her husband, Rod. Lois, a Thomson native, and Rod, moved to their property 15 years ago to enjoy the scenic timbers and the rolling valleys that lead north toward Northwest Illinois’ scenic Driftless Region. Lois recently retired from the health care field after four decades and Rod works in construction. In 2019, she had a week off for vacation and was looking for something to do. She stumbled upon a picture of a painting with colorful bubbles and waves that caught her eye and thought that would be a neat thing to try. That chance discovery led her down a rabbit hole to a wonderland of world culture.

The piece she saw was created with the paint pouring method, and Lois delighted in discovering the process of pouring cups of paint on canvas and letting the colors spread and swirl their way into a work of art. The paintings are like a colorful Rorschach test — everybody sees something different. “I had a week off once, and I thought, ‘I got to do something during that week,’” Lois said. “Somehow this popped up. I started out very, very, very basic, and went from there. “They came out, I thought, fun and beautiful.” Some of her own works are displayed throughout the store. One painting led to more, and that led to an association with like-minded artists, each with their own unique styles. Lois continued to immerse herself in the world of art and it didn’t take long for her journey to take her to work from
around the world. “It’s really interesting to look and find all of the different art,” Lois said. “Once you get your heart into it, it just goes and keeps going” — and Grove just kept on going. She’s found pieces not only from throughout the U.S., but around the world, too — Africa, Asia and Europe, and elsewhere — bringing a little piece of each country’s culture to her Carroll County shop, where customers can go on their own journey of discovery. For Lois, anything can be a work of art, even everyday items like lamps. Lois has a collection of ornate and distinctive pieces from Turkey and South Africa. The ones from Turkey can paint a room in color with their stained glass shades, and her South African lamps help coax light out of its shell: They’re made from ostrich eggs, with various scenes carved into the shells.

A tip of the hat to these happy ladies This group of fun-loving ladies added a splash of color to The Clubhouse during a recent meeting of the local chapter of The Red Hat Ladies. Sandi Szulkowski snapped a photo of the women and thought it would make a good photo for “Life on the Lake.” According to its website (redhatsociety.com), The Red Hat Society is a “unique international playgroup” that recognizes that women need an occasional “recess” from family, career and community — a place where they can enjoy some time for themselves. The group is passionate about promoting the power of fun, friendship, fitness, and the freedom for women to express themselves in positive ways. The Red Hat Society’s roots go back 25 years, to 1997, when California artist Sue Ellen Cooper bought a red hat during a trip she was on. Inspired by a Jenny Joseph poem, “Warning” — which begins, “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple, with a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me” — she bought another one for her friend to encourage her to have fun growing older. She went on to do the same for other friends and the women held the first Red Hat Society meeting the following year. Originally for women 50 and older, the group has since expanded to include women of all ages. Red Hatters, those 50 and older, wear purple clothing and red hats, while other members wear lavender clothing and pink hats. Thanks, Sandi, for sharing her photo of life on the lake!

Peekaboo! You’ve heard about flora and fauna, but how about flora and a fawn? When Stephanie Glowienke looked out at the flower bed in her yard at Lake Carroll, she saw more than greens sprouting up, she saw this little critter resting in her bed. A lone fawn isn’t that uncommon, in fact, they’re part of mom’s plan. Mother deer will leave their first-year fawns in tall grass or bushes, sometimes backyards, while they go off to feed during the day. Tucking them away in a safe place and leaving them alone during the day also avoids leading predators to the location of their offspring. The does return at dawn and dusk to tend to their young. While some well-intentioned people will try to rescue what they think is an abandoned fawn, wildlife experts say they should be left alone. Editor’s note: Throughout Lake Carroll’s 50th anniversary this year, we’ve been running submissions from readers of their memories of life on the lake. Below is one sent in by Sue Cox. If you have special memories you’d like to share, email them to ccutter@saukvalley.com. Ron and I built our lake house in 1988 and moved in January 1989. We loved this house from the minute we occupied it. I wanted a big house to have enough room so that we could have more than 40 people staying at the house for 3 to 4 days. Everybody who came brought food and beverages, and chipped in with all of the work. We would play games down by the lake, and were in the water and on boats and Sea-Doos the whole time. If it was rainy, we would play card games and board games. There was a lot of eating and some drinking. We always said that the minute we walked into the house, we would get hungry for some reason. Ron and his friends, and our older boys, would do fireworks in the cul-de-sac until Ron got too close to a fuse and one of the boys ended up deaf for a while. I said, “That was the end of that,” and hired professionals from that next year on. It was much more enjoyable for everyone. We would all line up on the deck and look out into the lake to see all of the lights from the boards waiting for the show. After a couple of interactive fireworks, depending on how the wind was blowing and getting the dregs dropping on us, we started to wear construction goggles. After the show, we would come in and have root beer floats. We lived in the house year-round. We would snowmobile, skate and sled down the hill next to us, then all of the kids would hop into the big bath to warm up. In the summer, one of our favorite things to do was to drive around the lake and look at all of the beautiful houses. There always were things to do any time we were there. We have so many great memories. Sadly, Ron passed away in August [of 2021], and we had discussed selling the house if he could not keep up with the things he enjoyed doing. That made it easier for me to decide to sell it. It was his and my favorite place in the world after our resort in Maui. It will be very hard for me and a lot of others who have good memories of the lake house, but our memories always will be with us.
