arroll County is a place rich in history, from its days as the land where Chief Black Hawk’s Native Americans made a life for themselves, to a time when Mississippi River traffic helped Savanna develop into what was then the largest city on the river in the early 1800s, to the years when creameries used creeks to turn out dairy products around the turn of the 20th century. While Lake Carroll’s story doesn’t stretch back as far as the county it calls home, it’s still managed to pack a lot of history into its half-century — and the story it tells is pretty remarkable. As the 1970s dawned, developers saw a blank slate nestled in the county’s countryside and carved out one of the state’s premier lakeside communities, transforming forest and farmland into a place that hundreds call home. Lake Carroll has more than earned its place in the county’s history book, and people can learn more about the fascinating chapter of local history during Legacy Day.

As part of the community’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration, Legacy Day will put Lake Carroll’s history front and center. Coming just a day before the anniversary of lake’s official opening, on May 15, 1972, Legacy Day will be held May 14 at the clubhouse. Lake members and their guests are invited. The daylong presentation, “An Exhibit of Lake Carroll Through the Decades,” will take visitors on a tour through Lake Carroll’s history, from the first mounds of more than a million cubic feet of soil moved to create it all the way to the present. Mercedes Meyers, a resident for more than 20 years, is leading a team of volunteers who’ve researched the lake’s history, and not unlike the people who helped build the lake, they’ve done some digging of their own: unearthing files and photos that tell the lake’s story, transforming them into a visual presentation of the lake’s past and present, and its people. “Our purpose is to recognize Lake Carroll’s history and Lake Carroll property owners,” Meyers said. “Then the by-product of that is to encourage all of us to continue the legacy.” The Legacy Day committee consists of Meyers, Beth Loscudo, Rose Ann Masella, Char Messmore, Helen Sykora, Wayne and Sue Ugorek and Tom and Pat Weinecke. Meyers is a member of Lake Carroll’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee, and volunteered to coordinate the Legacy Day program. At first, only a few volunteers were recruited to recount the lake’s history, but more were brought in when it became clear that there was a lot of history to unfold. They met monthly, and then every Monday, to arrange the collection of notes, pictures, photocopies and other artifacts that they were amassing. It didn’t take long for the team to get hooked on history. Discovering the genesis of various parts of the lake’s legacy, such as its first residents and social clubs, became a fascinating history lesson for all involved, Loscudo said. “Getting to know of the different people in the community who have taken an interest in making it what it is has been so gratifying and rewarding to me,” Loscudo said. “The stories they have are phenomenal. They are the storytellers of this history.”

They’ve had plenty of help from longtime members and residents who have chipped in a photo or memory or two, or even old notes, newspaper clippings and files from committee meetings. The team has enjoyed piecing together the past, and they hope the story they tell will inspire more people to take an interest in the lake’s history. The Legacy Day research team used all the tools in its toolbox to tell Lake Carroll’s story: time, dedication, detective work, planning, paperwork, a magnifying glass — and lots of Post-It notes.
The Member’s Room offers plenty of comfortable seating for members and their guests to sit back, relax, and share their memories of the lake, or create some new ones. “We also encourage them to interact with other people who are there,” Meyers said. “They can find a Legacy Day member to talk to, or to exchange stories. We all have a story.” The posters will be lined up in chronological order, beginning with the genesis of bringing a private lake community to Carroll County and curling around the room all the way to more recent developments, such as Candlelight Inn coming into the clubhouse. The team hopes the presentation will have something for everyone — that no matter whether they’re new to Lake Carroll or are longtime members, that guests learn something. For example: One part of the presentation covers why certain sections have smaller yards than others: It has to do with the stages of Lake Carroll’s evolution through lots laid out by its original developer, Russwood, Inc., to those later carved out by the Patten Corp. If Russwood and Patten aren’t familiar names to Lake Carroll’s residents, they can come learn about them — and more — through the history on display. “Whether you browse for a few minutes or spend some more time there, you will leave with several remarkable facts,” Meyers said. “We have learned things amongst ourselves just by being on the committee.” At 2 p.m., Lake Carroll Operations Manager Joe Rush will present a slideshow history on the evolution of the lake and dam through pictures taken nearly 50 years ago by Leroy Hinkle, for whom the lake’s dam is named.

Hinkle was a neighbor of the Weineckes until his death in 2006. Tom has plenty of fond memories of Hinkle and his dedication the lake’s role in the local ecology. Taking a great interest in the specifics of the dam — water flow, discharge and efficiency — helped earn Hinkle the distinction of having his name live on at the lake. “He was for the whole community, but he was instrumental with the dam and documenting it and everything,” Weinecke said. “I’m just trying to continue his legacy the best I can.” The Weineckes have owned property in Lake Carroll for more than 35 years, and being able to take a stroll down memory lane and rekindle memories of all of the people who’ve held create the community is what makes Tom excited to be a part of the team.

“I bought my lot in 1986, built my home in ’87 and was a weekender until 2012,” Weinecke said. “It brings back memories.” Sykora has also lived in Lake Carroll for more than 30 years. Like Weinecke, she also got to know many of the early local “icons” who made lasting contributions to the lake. For her, the trip down memory lane has been bittersweet at times. Flipping through pages from the past, from newspapers to documents, has helped rekindle many fond memories of the people she knew, but she wishes more of them were still here to share their stories and celebrate what the lake has become.
“It’s kind of fun, but kind of sad in a way because there are a lot of people that are no longer here that were here during those early years,” Sykora said. “At first it seemed overwhelming, but it’s all going to work out well.” Loscudo is unique among the group in that she’s a relative newcomer, having lived in Lake Carroll for only a few years. For her, volunteering for Legacy Day has helped reminder her of what makes the lake so special, and why she’s glad she moved here from Virginia to be closer to family. Being part of the Legacy Day team has given her “a whole new appreciation for what Lake Carroll is, and how it became this way, and how it’s going to continue,” she said.

“My husband Mark and I moved here in December of 2018, and we had only heard of Lake Carroll in September of 2018, so I had no prior knowledge when we moved out here to be with our children and grandchildren,” Loscudo said. “Knowing that it was going to satisfy our next stage in life, this project has fulfilled that.” The team hopes their fellow residents are as interested in the lake’s story as they are, and that the Legacy Day event gets a large turnout. People are invited to make a day of it: stop by, then grab a meal just across the hall at Candlelight Inn, or browse around the pro shop for some Lake Carroll apparel — and they can wrap up the day some with laughs. The team plans to have a comedy night performance later in the day with Wisconsin-based comedian Mike Mercury performing at 7:30 p.m. The day is sure to bring up several names, moments and highlights of Lake Carroll’s history, and, most importantly, the appreciation to those “founding fathers and mothers” who had visions of making the community what it is today. “When we recognize our predecessors, it validates the work that our current volunteers are doing,” Meyers said. “There’s more encouragement and motivation by doing that.”

s this year’s Eastland High School seniors are writing one last chapter of their extra-curricular legacies as Cougars, Olivia Klinefelter is just beginning hers. Though they’re only a few years apart, being a freshman on a varsity team with juniors and seniors can seem like quite an age gap when you’re a teenager, and it can be intimidating too. But this base player in a band of sisters has managed to hold her own on Eastland’s softball team — and do pretty well — alongside her more experienced teammates. She’s keeping her eye on the ball at first base, and at home plate, and that talent is coming in handy this year as the team, coached by Keali Eich, looks to improve upon a 10-4 a season that was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, when they earned a second-place finish in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference’s South Division. In addition to school sports, Olivia also plays club volleyball for Lanark’s No Limits national team, traveling near and far, improving her game wherever she goes. Olivia is the daughter of Jim and Amanda Klinefelter, and she has a brother, Eric Schaney. The family has lived in Lake Carroll for 5 years, having moved from their previous home down the road in Shannon. Lake Lifestyle recently caught up with Olivia to talk to her about her time on the diamond. What do you like about playing softball? The bonds that I create, and also fielding, where you’ve got to stay focused when you’re catching the ball. Playing first base is such an important part of the game; do you feel like there’s any pressure to be relied upon to prevent the runners from reaching base? Most of the balls are coming to you, and you don’t want to drop them, so you’re just always making sure you can catch the ball. How long have you been playing softball competitively? I have played town ball [in Shannon] since I was 7, and then this year. What makes softball a good sport to play? The energy, staying focused and having a lot of adrenaline when the opposing batters hit the ball. What’s it like being a younger person on a team with juniors and seniors? It’s fun because you have a lot of bonds that you make, and they’ll include you in. You’ll have some nerves, but they’re just there to help you. What are some of the awesome experiences you’ve enjoyed so far on the softball team? All of the memories that we’ve had in the first few weeks of practice. Our game [on April 6 against River Ridge] was fun, also; it was a long and cold double-header.
As a three-sport athlete, Olivia Klinefelter balances her time between volleyball, basketball and softball during the school year. Do you have a preference when it comes to playing weather? Warm! What can be challenging about playing out in the cold? Batting. You just can’t think about your hands being cold. It helps when my adrenaline is high. What do you like about playing first base? I like catching, because I like reaching out for a lot of balls. It’s just fun to make those good plays. Sometimes it can be difficult because I don’t know how far I need to go. What does it take to be a successful at first base? Being able to stretch and just getting every ball you can, as good as you can. How about being a good batter? Staying focused and watching the ball, and not the pitcher throwing. The pace of play is different from town ball to high school varsity ball; has that been difficult or easy to adapt to?

After the first few games, what did you come to learn about your softball game? Staying focused, and that every run really matters because it could come down to the very end of the game. What’s been one amazing moment that you’ve experienced in the first few games of the season, one that’s made playing on the team fun? Our game with River Ridge when [second baseman] Mallory Misiewicz made a good play and then she started dancing. She got a good play and started busting out a move!
When something fun like that happens, how does it help the team? It’s fun. It helps calm everything down and keeps the game going. Does your team, or do you, have any certain goals for this year? We want to do as best as we can, and keep going until we can’t. We want as many wins as we can. What do you enjoy about living at Lake Carroll? Being able to walk down to the water, and being out on the boat is pretty fun. That, and I like deer. I like seeing all of the deer that are around.

Anderson will get into the swing of things at the University of Dubuque When Eastland High School senior Andy Anderson filled out his college application for the University of Dubuque, he made sure to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s. When he signed on to play sports there, all he had to worry about were the tees. Anderson signed his letter of intent in April to play golf for the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, next year. Andy, the son of Scott and Kelly Bares of Lake Carroll and Lonnie Anderson, plans to major in biology while playing golf for the Spartans. During his time at Eastland, Andy has competed in golf and basketball. During the past two seasons he’s advanced to the golf sectional and was voted to the NUIC first team all-conference golf team. or more than 30 years, Wayne Wilhelm and Gary Shellhause have made a living making the American dream come true for families who’ve made their home at Lake Carroll. They’ve put up “Sold” signs on a lot of properties during their time as owners of Fawnridge Realty, but there was no sale like the one made recently — sealing the deal to sell their business. Wilhelm and Shellhause have stepped down as Fawnridge’s owners, and on April 29 they passed the realty reins to a couple who’ll be able to see a lot of themselves in the clients they’ll be serving: Nick and Kayla Block, themselves owners of a home in Lake Carroll. Fawnridge is the Blocks’ first foray into owning a real estate business, but they have plenty of experience on the other side of the handshake, as clients who’ve bought and sold their own homes over the years.

“Hopefully we can bring a new level of experience to the clients because we’ve been through so many different situations,” Kayla said. To celebrate the transition, Fawnridge will host an outdoor cookout and ceremony during Memorial Day weekend to usher in its new chapter. As for Wilhelm and Shellhause, they aren’t riding off into the real estate sunset yet; they’ll remain with Fawnridge as managing brokers for at least a couple of more years to help make the transition a smooth one. “It was time,” both said of making a change to the company they began in 1992. “The sale makes me a little happy but it also makes me a little sad,” Wilhelm said, “but I know time marches on and we’re very happy that Nick and Kayla have come on board with a family operation, and it makes me feel very good.” Shellhause is no stranger to the Blocks. He sold them their home on the lake 8 years ago, and, in typical Fawnridge fashion, kept in touch with them well after the sale. “She’s got the right personality for it,” Shellhause said. “Personality has a lot to do with it, and she’ll have the knowledge. She’ll do fine.” Wilhelm, Shellhause and Larry Moser started Fawnridge after spending a few years selling homes and lots for the Patten Corporation, which laid out much of the northern and eastern portions of Lake Carroll. Moser remained with the
agency until his death in 2007. The trio each grew up within a few miles of Lake Carroll, and remember the area before the earth was moved and the land was transformed into a lakeside community — when country roads, farmland and winding creeks made up the landscape that would become home to many of the properties they would someday sell. When they joined Patten, they were in charge of selling lots that were much larger than the original tracts that Russwood Inc. laid out 50 years ago when Lake Carroll opened. Patten aimed for lower density and bigger yards, Shellhause said, and it led to larger homes being built on their end of the lake. “We grew up in this area and just saw the future of Lake Carroll and thought this was going to be a golden opportunity,” Shellhause said. “It has been.” Several brokers have come and gone through the years, but the current Lake Carroll sales team all have at least a decade of experience selling properties. Fawnridge isn’t just limited to selling homes in Lake Carroll, they also have a couple of brokers who concentrate on properties in Galena and Apple Canyon Lake. Lake Carroll, however, is their primary focus, and they drive home to each prospective buyer that there’s something special about life at the Lake — they’re not just selling properties, they’re selling a lifestyle.

Cyndy Griffin, who has been a broker with Fawnridge since 2003, enjoys promoting lake properties as “living the Lake Carroll lifestyle.” “You’re letting them see the lifestyle,” Griffin said. “You’re letting them see how people want to live and enjoy their lives, and the type of camaraderie and friendship of the community they’re living in.” Griffin and Barbara Hill both began as office managers when they started working at Fawnridge. Hill, like Griffin, moved up to become a broker after just a couple of years with the company. “The people make me enjoy coming here every day,” Hill said. “Nothing is ever the same, that’s for sure.” Office manager Megan Allvin does a lot of legwork to help support the brokers, including shooting photos of the homes. She also said she enjoys the long-lasting camaraderie that comes with helping someone find a new home. “A lot of the clients have become friends,” Allvin said. “I think everyone can attest to that. You stay in contact long enough during the sale. If you need anything, or maybe have a friend that starts looking, or a family member, or another generation comes in.” Dedication to Lake Carroll’s roots also is something Fawnridge takes pride in. About 4 years ago, they resurrected an old promotional video from the early 1970s from Russwood and posted it to their YouTube page. Like any business, Fawnridge understands the power of promotion and word of mouth, and through the years they’ve gotten that word out through print ads and TV commercials — but there was one deal in particular that attracted the attention of some people who helped a lot more people hear about Fawnridge: the team at HGTV. The people who produce the cable-TV channel’s “House Hunters” show caught wind of Jimmy and Amy Holt’s search for the perfect home. The Davenport, Iowa, coupled had narrowed their search for a part-time home to three Lake Carroll properties, and Griffin helped guide them through the process as the cameras rolled and directors stood watch in the background. Episodes are filmed like a reality series, and nothing is scripted and there’s no looking at the camera, in order to capture the process as it unfolds. The search was filmed in the fall of 2017 and premiered a few months later, on Feb. 26, in the episode “The Lake House Getaway in Illinois.” The Holts eventually picked a home on Lakeview Drive. “It was fun,” Griffin said. “We see them quite often. HGTV came out and you had to audition for them. We went through that, and this couple — they couldn’t have had a more perfect couple for a television show because he loved being in front of the camera. It was just perfect.” The exposure created a ripple effect: With Fawnridge’s name, and Lake Carroll’s identity, presented to a national audience, Griffin got more calls about properties along and near the lake; one of them came from a family in California who once lived in Kewanee. “They saw the show, and said ‘That’s where we want to move to,’” Griffin said. “They came back here, looked at houses and just last year bought their house and are now living in Lake Carroll.”

Fawnridge has also brought its message to a Chicago audience, through TV ads promoting Lake Carroll as the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. “Advertising Lake Carroll has been part of the reason why we’ve been so successful,” Wilhelm said. “We’ve spent a little over a million and a half on TV ads, and we’ve done all kinds of things as times have changed, with the internet being the big thing. We used to run ads on WGN-TV and the money really helped to help give Lake Carroll some notability, and people found us out here.” As with other longtime businesses, Fawnridge has seen its share of highs and lows through the years — shifting markets, housing bubbles, a pandemic — but through it all they’ve risen to the challenges and celebrated their successes. Recently, the pandemic prompted several city and suburban dwellers with houses in Lake Carroll to spend more time in their part-time homes, and inspired others to buy a house. During the pandemic a growing number of buyers were pulling up the “For Sale” signs at houses almost as fast as real estate agents could put them out. Toss in falling interest rates on top of that and it was a prime time for prime real estate. Low rates super-charged demand for land and homes across the U.S., and it kept Fawnridge’s agents busy. About $29 million in sales were tallied in 2020, nearly double from the previous year, and last year saw $39 million in sales. As a result of the pandemic migration, the Eastland School District saw its enrollment jump by more than 75 students.

“When it first started, I told my wife that it was going to be a sloooow year, and I’d get a lot of things done at home that I’d always wanted to do,” Shellhause said. “About a month later the gates broke loose, and it was non-stop. “The inventory’s still pretty tight, but there are still buyers out there. It was wild and crazy.” That sales growth helped Shellhause and Wilhelm go out on a high note, and set the Blocks up for continued success. Wilhelm’s wife, Phyllis, and Nick’s father, Doug, both work for the Highland Community College Foundation Board. That’s how the Blocks, who are Pearl City natives, heard through the grapevine that Fawnridge was about to be put on the market. “There was a foundation meeting and after that I went over and talked to Doug, who asked me how Gary was, since they were high school classmates,” Wilhelm said. “We chit-chatted, and I said that Gary and I were thinking about selling our business. We hadn’t decided for sure, but were thinking about it.” The Blocks quickly became interested and looked at owning Fawnridge not only as a business opportunity, but as a way to “have a legacy here,” Kayla said. “This area is home to us, not only growing up but also having a home at the lake for the last 8 years,” Kayla said. “We love the area and want to help people that are buyers see the opportunity of having a property at Lake Carroll as well as support the sellers in realizing the best outcome when they transition away from the lifestyle at the lake.” The Blocks have to wait 2 years until they become a managing broker and fulfill other licens-

ing requirements by the State of Illinois, but are eager to get going this month. “We want to bring a new level of client experience to Fawnridge,” Kayla said. “To do that, we will build on what they’ve established but also take it forward by enhancing the buyer and the seller experience with new marketing and technology approaches.” The transition will conclude with a “thank you” celebration May 29 at Plumtree Lodge to honor the customers they’ve served, the friends they’ve made, and the community they’ve been a part of over the past three decades, and to pass the torch to the Blocks. The celebration will include a barbecue, a 21-gun salute by Lake Carroll’s Veterans Club, live music, and fireworks in tribute to late Lake Carroll resident Ron Cox, who used to have an annual fireworks show near the Fourth of July. The fun lasts from 4 p.m. until the fireworks are over. (For more details of the celebration, including times, see the ad on page 45). As Lake Carroll celebrates 50 years of being a getaway, its history is being shared in many ways throughout the year, and the seeds are being planted for the next half-century. Wilhelm and Shellhause are excited to see what the Blocks can bring to the community and look forward to working with them. “I watched Lake Carroll being built, and we all have a lot of roots here,” Wilhelm said. “We haven’t had a lot of turnover of employees, and Gary and I are very happy about that. Hopefully this is just the first or second chapter of Fawnridge Realty, and they’ll go on to write a whole book.”

Rail lines such as the Illinois Central, Chicago Great Western, Milwaukee Road, Chicago Burlington and Quincy, and the Chicago and Northwestern sprouted out of Chicago like a steel starburst, leaving The Windy City for destinations near and far. The region west of the Mississippi River had yet to be fully explored when these lines were first laid out, and for many Americans, the only way they could go west, young man, was on a train. While cars and highways replaced trains and tracks as the preferred means of personal travel, the lines that stretch across the nation are still a major part of America’s transportation system, moving goods from coast to coast; and advocates for passenger trains — who’d like to see a return of passenger service to the area, including stops in Freeport and Galena — are hoping their efforts pick up steam (visit ridetherail.org for more information). Don’t worry though; the Easter Bunny didn’t run his furry little feet off hiding them. They were in plain sight, and not one of them was dyed pink or purple. That’s because there was nothing to dye for; the kids were learning about life instead — as in the facts of — and they were doing it at Lake Carroll’s fish hatchery. Nearly 50 Eastland Jr. High students visited the hatchery during an open house April 11 to learn more about how the operation works and see the miracle of life in action. The hatchery, one of the few in the state that’s privately owned, keeps the lake stocked with fish. Lake Carroll’s Fishing Club maintains the hatchery and the gear that keeps it running, and for 6 weeks out of the year the hatchery is teeming with life as members keep their eye on millions of eggs vying to see the light of day. Once ice thaws on the lake, by early April, club members start gathering up as many walleye as they can

to harvest their eggs, as many as 25,000 from one fish. How do you harvest fish eggs? With a squeeze, kinda like a tube of toothpaste. Once they’ve got the eggs, they’re placed in a steel bowl and fertilized (courtesy of the male walleyes’ contribution to the cause). The next step on their journey back into the water is into a bin for a few hours, then into a large tube. About 2 weeks later, they begin to hatch and the small fry — no, that’s not a nickname; newly hatched fish are called fry — wiggle in to the world. The fry are then placed into another tub for about 4 days before being placed in a nearby holding pond where they’ll become strong enough to survive in the lake. After a few months, the pond is drained through a valve where the fish are netted and transported to the lake. The survival rate for the eggs is less than 1 percent, so of the nearly 25,000 eggs laid by one fish, less than 250 usually make it through the hatching process. “You got to consider all of the other fish and the predators. If we can get half of 1 percent of what we put in, it’s a good hatch,” club member Mike Siciliano said in an interview with Lake Lifestyle last year. With odds like that, maybe the small fry could increase their odds with a lucky rabbit’s foot — just don’t ask the Easter Bunny for his.
