Maybe you’ve had one of “those days”: bad weather, slow golfers ahead of you on the course, the sun setting too soon, or maybe it’s just a day when you want to hit a few shots but don’t feel like walking the course. PrairieView Golf Club’s PrairieFire simulator and restaurant opened in June 2020, and it’s a perfect place to have fun golfing year-round in a relaxed environment, in practically any kind of weather, day or night, all while enjoying food and drinks with friends. Its eight heated hitting bays are equipped with Toptracer Range technology. The hitting bays allow golfers to send their shots flying in several game modes on virtual courses. Cameras track and trace the ball as it sails over the driving range. Each of the colored targets illuminate and blink when a ball lands on it. The system tracks the balls with two cameras, one on each side, that triangulate the ball’s path, tracking, speed, spin, apex, curve, carry, total distance and more. Statistics are shown on a computer screen at each bay; the displays look similar to how televised golf programs break down shots by the pros, with graphics and statistics. Kids can get in on the action, too, with Toptracer’s Go Fish game, where sea creatures can be captured by sending shots to targets on a screen. The game can be played individually or in teams of four golfers. Each bay also has overhead heaters, fans, and fire pits for coldweather play, as well as lounge areas that allow for maximum comfort for larger groups. Hitting bays can be rented by the hour, even for a late-night game. PrairieFire is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday (minors must be accompanied by parent or guardian after 10 p.m.).

Golfers and guests can watch the action from the indoor viewing areas right off of the driving bays at PrairieFire, or they can grab a seat outside to keep an eye on the action. If you’re looking for a spot where the focus is less on food and drink with your fun and more on the game, The Golf Room at Dixon’s Miller Golf Complex has an indoor TruGolf Vista 12 Pro golf simulator. The facility opened in January 2021. The simulator offers play on hundreds of courses from around the world, with cameras used to figure out stats such as club head speed, ball trajectory and more. It can be programmed to play golf, practice or play games. The facility also can be rented for special occasions. The building is not staffed, so customers are on their own, but there is a tutorial on the park district’s website at dixonparkdistrict.com/the-golf-room, as well as instructions for entry inside the building. Enjoy snacks and a television while waiting to step up to the green. When the weather’s nicer, Miller Golf Complex has a driving range, open from dawn to dusk, to help improve the first stroke. The Golf Room is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. 7 days a week.

Kaddy’s offers both a restaurant/bar and a trip to the world’s famous golf courses, all under one roof, with The Major Room. It’s the area’s latest entry into indoor golf, having opened in May. When you’re done playing at Pebble Beach, you can grab a pizza, or any of Kaddy’s other menu offerings, including 10-ounce burgers, wings, mac-and-cheese and various sandwiches on Texas toast for lunch or dinner. Just off the dining area, The Major Room offers a top-line Full Swing simulator with a 120-inch screen and 50 famous golf courses to choose from. Simulators like this one can be found in top pros’ homes, such as Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, so you’ll be in good company. Winter leagues also are run on the simulator. Also off from the dining area is The Clubhouse, which has two Golden Tee game machines for players who prefer arcade-like action, a dart board, a pool table, a bowling game and eight TVs, including a 180-inch screen. You can top off your New York-style pizza with dessert: The Club Champion is a piece of vanilla cake with chocolate frosting in the middle, battered, deep-fried and covered with powered sugar, caramel, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. hy should summer get all the glory when it comes to having a good time? Yeah, we know: Fun in the sun and all that. But Old Man Winter has a few things up his sleeve too. There’s plenty to do outdoors even when there’s snow on the ground and a chill in the air. While it may be tempting to curl up and stay inside while you wait for the mercury to get a spring in its step, there’s a winter wonderland out there full of fun things to do, and many of them aren’t that far from Lake Carroll. On the following pages are eight great outdoor winter activities to enjoy in the area, so let’s warm up the car and hit the road!

While getting in a game of traditional golf probably isn’t in the cards (but you can play inside; see story on page 4), disc golf is a little more suited to playing in the winter climes. The game has increased in popularity in recent years, and a growing number of cities have added courses. Heading out for a brisk walk amid the baskets not only gives you something to do, it’s good exercise, especially during the winter when we’re less active — just make sure your discs are bright and not white. Here’s a list of courses within an hour’s drive from Lake Carroll; and even if you decide not to try your hand at a game this winter, keep the courses in mind when the weather gets nicer ... Even though renovation work continues at Lake Carroll’s ski hill, you can still hit the slopes; you just have to strap on the seatbelt before you strap on the skis. Until work on the hill is finished, enjoy this trio of resorts – each within 90 minutes of the lake. Chestnut Mountain Resort, 8700 W. Chestnut Mountain Road, south of Galena, is the closest slope. In addition to challenging skiing, Chestnut Mountain also has a restaurant and lodging packages. Most of the 17 slopes at Chestnut are for intermediate and expert skiers, but there are a couple of smaller and easier hills for beginners. The net drop is 475 feet with 3,500 feet in all among its slopes. Sundown Mountain Resort, 16991 Asbury Road, is west of Dubuque, Iowa. It, like Chestnut Mountain, is located in the scenic Driftless Area and offers plenty of hills and eye-catching scenery. The mountain, at 475 feet, has 20 runs — eight

beginner, eight intermediate and four difficult slopes — as well as two freestyle terrain parks. Want to see how you stack up against others? Competitive Nastar racing opportunities are available on most Saturdays. The lodge has a restaurant and a coffee shop. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday; check sundownmtn.com for special event times. The park has 14 ski and snowboard trails within 28 acres and a 262-foot slope, with one-quarter of the fun designated for beginning skiers, another one-quarter for advanced skiers, and the remaining half for intermediate triers. Tubing, disc golf and zip line tours — including one up to 1,300 feet long — also are available. The lodge has two restaurants and a lounge. Ever wonder why it’s so much quieter when there’s lots of snow on the ground? It’s science: According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (nsidc.org), “when the ground has a thick layer of fresh, fluffy snow, sound waves are readily absorbed at the snow surface, dampening sound.” It can be so quiet, you could hear a pin drop — but good luck finding it in the snow. Larger parks nearby can take you away from hustle and bustle. Drive in, park, or stroll to a shelter and experience the peace and quiet. Ward’s Grove Nature Preserve, 3528 S. Willow Road east of Stockton. According to a state tourism website, Wards Grove is the considered “the best mound forest remaining in the Driftless Area.” It features 335 protected acres of woodlands with populations of sensitive plant and animal species. Slip sliding away down hills is always a family favorite, and these days more options are available. You can bounce down a hill on a tube, zip down on a Rocket Sled, take a trip on a toboggan, or glide down on good old-fashioned snow sled. Sure, going down is more fun than coming up, but that uphill battle is great exercise. While any hill will work, some of the area parks — including the aforementioned Krape Park in Freeport, Sinnissippi Park in Sterling and Mississippi Palisades State Park — offer some slippery slopes worth a visit.

Up until 3 years ago, semi-professional hockey had a home within an hour’s drive from Lake Carroll, but there’s still exciting action to be had a short drive away even after the days of the Monroe Blues. The Freeport Park District reserves its ice rink at Read Park, 112 S. Burchard Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m. every Thursday for those who want to lace up the skates, slap the puck, and lead their team to victory. There’s no cost to play, but waivers need to be filled out before participation. Contact the park district at 815-235-6114 for more information. Rather watch a game than play one? Head to Wisconsin to take in a high school hockey game and cheer on the Monroe High School Cheesemakers. The team is made up of students from Monroe, New Glarus and Pecatonica high schools in Wisconsin, as well as Warren High School in Jo Daviess County. Cheer on the athletes in the Illinois Special Olympic Games, which run from Feb. 1 to 3 at Chestnut Mountain Resort. The games, which include slalom and super slalom skiing and snowshoe dashes, attract more than 400 Special Olympic athletes from throughout the state who qualify during local regional events. Participants are helped by more than 150 coaches and 300 volunteers. Downtown Galena is host to the opening ceremony, which is also a great place to visit anytime of year. OK, so when winter comes you’d rather settle down for a long winter’s nap and not wake up until it’swarm outside. We get it. The weather outside is frightful and inside it’s so delightful. So, if you’d rather not venture outside, here are few things to keep you occupied inside this winter. Don’t want to play outside? Press “play” inside — Enjoy a movie marathon. What to watch? Check out the list of lake-related movies elsewhere in this issue. Mix things up — Whether you crack open a cookbook, and scroll through the countless recipes online, winter time is a good time to try out some new recipes, or whip up some old favorites. Move the needles — Try knitting. Make a scarf (you know, just in case you change your mind about going outside). Spring cleaning in the winter — OK, now that you can’t be distracted by all the fun in the sun, it’s time to sort through all those boxes, organize some things, and toss out what you don’t need — or better yet, donate items to a local thrift shop or charity. Clean out your e-mail — Do you really need every e-mail you’ve ever gotten? Delete, delete, delete! Then delete some more. Host a craft-making party — Make jewelry, scrapbooks, or other crafty creations while catching up with friends. Swapping sweets — Put together a cookie exchange. After all, what better time to crank up the oven and do some baking? Invite some friends over to see what’s on their cookie sheets. The games people play — Have some friends and family over for game night. Who knows, you may end up playing a Monopoly game that’ll last all the way through summer. Think we’re kidding? Check out Hasbro’s Monopoly: Longest Game Ever. It’s a version of the classic game that’s designed to go on and on and on. Among the differences: There are more properties on the board, bankruptcy won't get you out of the game, and there’s only one die — no more doubles — And in order win you have to own every property on the board. The company promises it’ll be the “Longest ... Monopoly game ... ever” Give pieces a chance — Jigsaw puzzle sales exploded during the pandemic, but if you didn’t jump on the bandwagon, maybe now’s a good time to pick up a puzzle. Don’t want to go it alone? Invite some friends over for a puzzle party. Edge pieces first! Don’t worry about Yogi and Boo-Boo — Have a picnic in the living room. Sure, it may sound silly, but why not? Pack a picnic basket, lay down a blanket and roast some hot dogs in the fireplace. Got kids? Roll out the sleeping bags, or pitch a pup tent and let them camp out inside. Just have fun!

The people planning Lake Carroll’s golden jubilee have found the perfect gift, and it’ll take lake residents a year to unwrap it — and what they’ll find inside will be a gift that keeps on giving: old traditions and new friends, and a celebration of what’s brought them together for the past half a century. The lake’s 50th anniversary party already has started — when Plumtree Lodge hosted a New Year’s Eve bash Dec. 31 that kicked off a celebration of Lake Carroll’s 50 years as Illinois’ largest private lake community — but don’t worry if you’re late to the party; there’ll be a lot more chances to join in.

Among the fun at Plumtree that night was a performance from local cover band Better Late Than Never, hors d’oeuvre and a champagne toast at midnight to raise a glass not only to 2022, but 1972, the year Lake Carroll opened its doors. The party kicked off a string of events scheduled to take place each month through the year, wrapping up with another clink of the glasses at midnight on Dec. 31, when party-goers will usher in another new year. This celebration that’s been 50 years in the making wouldn’t have been possible without a hard-working team behind it all — a group that’s going the extra mile for this milestone. Lake Carroll Marketing Manager Sara Ashby, Activities and Events Coordinator Kari Wolfe, and their anniversary planning committees are putting in plenty of hours to make sure that there’s no shortage of familyfriendly celebrations throughout the year for Lake Carroll’s 50th anniversary celebration. Many members of the team have helped with oneoff special events in the past, but this is the first time any of them have tackled a year-long celebration. “We talked with people who have worked on past events to find out what works and what doesn’t work,” Ashby said. “We also brought in some younger members for some fresh ideas.” “We have a great team of people on our task force putting together these events. It’s fun to collaborate with them,” Wolfe said. That the events will be fun is a given — the team is making sure of that — but they also want them to be an opportunity for the entire community to come together and get to know one another, a sort of year-long meet-and-greet. “It’s really important for us to get more people out to our events to experience Lake Carroll and meet new people,” Wolfe said. “This is especially going to be a great year, with the new members that we’ve had, to get everyone together.” With the community seeing more new residents in the past 20 months — due to varying reasons, the COVID-19 pandemic among them — knowing their neighbors can go a long way in assuring safety, security and peace of mind. Wolfe knows what it’s like to meet new people. She’s been at Lake Carroll for less than a year, but since taking over as Activities and Events Coordinator and helping with the anniversary planning, she’s been able to meet a lot of long-time residents and greet plenty of new faces. She hopes the rest of the lake residents will do the same. “I hope to see more people coming out to the events,” Wolfe said. “I hope to see more people getting involved in Lake Carroll, coming together and growing as a community: new members coming in, and new members meeting older members.” Several of the lake’s social clubs are also lending a hand, which not only brings more ideas to the table, but takes some of the pressure off the planning team. Lake Carroll’s Women’s Club will have a Sweetheart Dance on Feb. 19, the Yacht Club will host “Robber’s Bingo” on March 19, and the Prairie Club is coordinating a community Clean-up Day on April 23, the day after Earth Day.

“It’s nice that the clubs and committees have adopted their own events,” Ashby said. “It’s really helping to separate some of the duties a little bit, and makes it easy to work with. They’re planning them, we’re helping to fund them, and they’re doing the work. It’s a good working relationship between the clubs and committees, and it makes things go a lot smoother.” History will be the theme of the celebrations in May, when Legacy Day honors the people who have made Lake Carroll successful throughout its half-century, along with a look back at what life was like in years past. Legacy Day will be on May 14, with an open house in the Members Only Room at the Clubhouse. Comedy performances will be at Candlelight Inn later that night. The Legacy Committee is devoted to making the community’s history come alive, and that’s involved plenty of digging through files, media and photo albums to tell the story of how Lake Carroll came to be, and how those memories and traditions continue to play a role in the community today. Bringing the past and present together is important in bringing the people of Lake Carroll together. “We have a lot of new members in the last 2 years, and usually a lot of the events have the same people over and over again,” Ashby said. “We’re hoping to expand and have more and more people come out and have new members get to know more and more people.” Going into the summer months, the Fishing Club will have its annual Kids Fishing Derby on June 18, where kids can catch a fish, enjoy a cookout, play games and win prizes.

That brings us to July, when things really start to pop. Lake Carroll Fest aims to be the biggest event of the anniversary celebrations. Residents are invited to the parking lot in front of the Clubhouse, where the 3-day event will run from July 29-31, with live music, food, games, fireworks and a parade. The annual Big Cup Golf Scramble will take place on the 30th, open to members only. National Night Out is Aug. 2, and residents and their families who either served in the military or are/were first responders will be honored. On Aug. 28, a car show and car parade rolls in, and just a few days later the annual Labor Day Bash will be put on by the Campground Social Club with food, music and a bonfire. Last year’s campfire saw the biggest turnout in many years, Wolfe said. The National Night Out event and Lake Carroll Fest are both first-time events at the lake. The fun continues into the fall: The Ski Club will host October Fest on Oct. 15 with beer, brats and live music; and a Turkey Trot Sara Ashby 5K and fun run-and-walk will loop around the lake Nov. 19. This timetwisting tale — a remake of the 2002 film South Korean film “Il Mare” — involves a couple living in the same lake house exchanging letters, even though they lived in the house 2 years apart. What transpires are exchanges that lead to a love story with a twist ending. The scenery isn’t too far from Lake Carroll: The movie is set in Chicago, and many of the scenes will filmed there, at Maple Lake Forest Preserve in Willow Springs, as well as in Aurora and Riverside.

A tale from life in the late 1930s, a middle-aged British woman retreats to an Italian lake resort in an attempt to heal herself from the recent loss of her father. While there, she meets a well-off bachelor, who is also a British military officer, and the two begin a romance. Meanwhile, a young American woman also arrives at the lake and starts to flirt with the officer. Who winds up winning his heart in the end? You’ll just have to watch and find out.

It’s the first time she has been back to the cottage in many years, and she hasn’t seen her father in just as long, but her son develops a close bond with his aging grandfather — quite the opposite from the estrangement between father and daughter. Henry Fonda earned his only Oscar award for the film; he died less than a year after its release. The film was remade 20 years later for a TV movie with the same title, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Investigations start with a dead body from deep below the water, but after the creature shows itself to the team of hunters, they find they might be in over their heads. Can the terror be subdued peace return to the lake? The movie spawned five madefor-TV sequels. White’s role as Delores Bickerman, a “sweet old lady” who hides a deadly secret, was hailed by some critics as one of her best.

Some of those trips focused on specific themes, such as specialty food shops and things to do in the fall, while others took you to places within an hour’s drive that you might not have been familiar with. Whether you’re new to the lake or have lived here for a while, we encourage you to get to know more about the area by visiting the area’s sites and towns and enjoying what they have to offer. This month, we’re back in the driver’s seat for a trip to Savanna, about 15 miles west of Lake Carroll. Savanna is a small town that’s big on things to do. In fact, there’s so much to see and do that the city was voted No. 1 among Best Small Towns for Adventure in a 2021 USA Today readers choice contest. Carroll County’s largest city (pop. 2,900) bills itself as a “Sportsman’s paradise” and is also a prime destination for both motorists and motorcyclists, who enjoy the scenic ride there along the Mississippi River. Savanna is accessible from U.S. Route 52, and state Routes 64 and 84.

The town was founded in 1828 by a group of workers from the lead mines in Galena, about 20 miles northwest; they chose a spot that had once been home to an Indian council house where neighboring tribe leaders met. The economic boost that came with being a river town helped Savanna grow with the flow. The city began as a steamboat stop for runs between Galena and St. Louis and continued to grow as a logging and shipping port and railroad hub. Barges are still loaded along the city’s riverfront as they make their way down the Mississippi. Today, Savanna retains its old-town charm, with many of its century-plus buildings still standing. Many storefronts now are home to small mom-and-pop shops with clothes, antiques, and crafts, as well as its share of bars and restaurants where visitors can relax during their visit. Among residents who have gone on to have some level of fame since growing up in town include astronaut Dale Gardner, for whom the bridge connecting Savanna and Sabula, Iowa, is named for; and Wayne King the “Waltz King,” whose music was heard on many radio and television shows during the 1940s and ’50s. At exploresavanna.com, Mayor Chris Lain says “Savanna is ready for you to explore,” and with all it has to offer — food and drink, scenery and shopping, history and hiking, and more — there should be plenty to discover. While the weather may be a little chilly right now, there are still things to see and places to go inside, and you can save the outdoor destinations for when it gets nicer outside.

looking the Mississippi River north of Savanna is a perfect spot for people of all ages who want to enjoy nature, whether it’s a leisurely stroll or a hearty hike, or maybe you just want to soak in the sights of nature’s handiwork. Trees as far as the eyes can see create a see of green during spring and summer, and serve up splashes of vibrant color during the fall. You can also take a hike along any of the 11 marked trails, which combine for 15 miles throughout the park. For those who want a bit of MississippiPalisades adventure in their day, the park is one of the few in the Open: Dawn to dusk state that allows rock climbing. And if you want to make a night out your day trip, the park has more than 200 campsites where you can sleep under the stars. Park is located on the grounds where small mills used to be along the Plum River. The park has ball diamonds, tennis courts, a basketball court, playground equipment and picnic shelters. One of the shelters, Plum Pavilion, is built over a small creek and resembles a European-style home with screened-in walls and a view of the creek in two directions. Good at tossing footwear or flying discs? The park has a horseshoe court and disc golf course. You can also learn about local history through signs at the park, including one that tells the story of Plum River Falls, which powered saw, powder, grist, and flour mills at various times between 1836 and 1885; and an “honor roll” of prominent wrestling athletes who went through Savanna High School, a program that won six Class A state championships from 1974 to 1982.

its second longest, the Mississippi meanders along Illinois’ western border and serves as key shipping channel for barges, which you can watch being loaded along the riverfront. The Mississippi has historically served as America’s east-west dividing line. On the eastern side, Marquette Park runs about a third of a mile along Savanna’s riverfront and offers boating, fishing and picnicking with a scenic view of the Mississippi River. North of town, boaters can enjoy the colors of fall as they take a leisurely trip past Mississippi Palisades State Park. Buffalo Lake, between the river and the park just north of town offers a prime spot for fishing, while a few miles south of town, you’ll find the area where the river reaches its widest point, 3 miles, between Iowa and Illinois. Bringing a boat? The Savanna Marina and the Island City Harbor in Sabula are a couple of places where you can park it.

The bus has been refitted inside to store kayaks and water tubes and can transport passengers to the fun that awaits them on the river, or maybe make a turn into the much smaller Plum River that runs south and east of town.

SAVANNA IS THE NORTHERN STARTING POINT OF THE GREAT RIVER TRAIL that extends down to the Mississippi’s confluence with the Rock River near Rock

Island. In town, the trail begins at the northern end of Marquette Park near the Dale Gardner Bridge, and follows the river throughout much of town proper. Headed out of town, the trail runs along the swampy lakes along the river’s edges, where flora, fauna and frogs can be found on both sides. One interesting spot along the trail is the Eugene T. Flack Bridge, which carries the trail over the Canadian Pacific rail line. This bridge, named for its mayor from 1989-2005, has a fence surrounding it on three sides to keep people safe; however, it also is a prime train watching spot as it is parallel to the rail line’s intersection with the busy BNSF Aurora Sub line that goes from St. Paul to Chicago. So, if you’ve always wondered what’s in those open train cars, you can peer down and take a look.

Many of these rooms are open on the tours, the rest are behind closed doors as Alan continues to live in the historic home.
