Owner Aby Breed said she never could have imagined her home would become a vacation destination when she bought the property 18 years ago. Breed, originally from Stockton, returned to the area after a career change. When she bought the property, she could see it came with a long list of needed improvements, but she also saw its potential – and its future as a place where her dream of farm life could come true Breed didn’t just want to fix up the place, she wanted to preserve the character of the land and the home, built in 1867. The life-long animal lover said she has built a home that her 10-year-old self would have loved. And yet, financially it wasn’t easy to manage the dream on her sole income as a health care administrator for Freeport Health Network. She saw sharing her home as a way to earn some additional income. For years she had welcomed friends for visits, but the decision to accept strangers took considerable consideration as she pondered giving up her privacy and maintaining the integrity of what she had built. Breed said she ultimately decided, “I like it here. I like it so much I want share it.” Plenty of people have taken her up on her offer. The retreat has been a popular destination since opening — and just because the snow’s about to fly doesn’t mean that Heritage Hollow shuts down. She offers her guests a comfortable place to sleep, cozy spaces to relax and the opportunity to enjoy farm life. Guests can join Breed with her daily chores, animal care, spending time with the horses, or playing with the farm dog while having their own private, modern accommodations. She’s been surprised at how many guests have been eager to join her on the farm: Couples nearing retirement who want to experience farm life for the first time, young families that watch as their children laugh with delight at the feel of the sheep’s long curly wool,or helpers who want to harvest just-laid speckled eggs for breakfast.

“I’ve had children setting their alarms to make sure they don’t miss helping me with chores, even at daybreak in the summer,” Breed said. “I’m excited and really grateful to have the opportunity to share what I love most about the world with others.” For the Halpins the farm has been an escape from their one-bedroom high-rise apartment and their demanding jobs. With each visit they discover a new animal, a new sound, a new experience. They’ve enjoyed the serenade of frogs and crickets under a summer moon and watched meteor showers beneath a blanket of stars after a bonfire. The Halpins said they’ve used vacation rental sites before to find places to stay and met other hosts, but none can compare to the hospitality and setting of Heritage Hollow. “The farm has become a special place in our heart and Aby is a great friend to us,” said Emily Halpin adding she can’t wait for her next visit to check on Bea the orphan sheep or see how the other animals are doing. Breed said the decision to open her home to guests has been a blessing. Whether they want to test drive farm life or simply escape of the daily hustle and bustle, she has discovered she enjoys meeting her guests and allowing her dream farm to become a part of their life’s narrative too. “They can chill and relax, they can hike in the fields or fish in the ponds and if they want, they can join me to groom the horses,” Breed said. “I’m floored at how many people love it and they keep coming back. I feel like I’ve got friends and we pick up conversations where we left off.”

about 7 miles north â€” a certain legendary log-splitter who would later lead a nation through one war played a part in another one. As a young nation born on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean pushed westward, its people encountered Native Americans who had settled the land long before, and were willing to fight for their right to keep their home; among them, the Sac Indian tribe.

At first, colonists pushed west with little resistance, but Chief Black Hawk and his tribe decided to push back – and they weren’t alone. The Sac (pronounced “Saw-k,” like Sauk Valley Community College in Lee County) crossed the Mississippi River and back into their once beloved land along with groups of Meskwakis and Kickapoos. But the newcomers were prepared to fight, and so it was that the Black Hawk War of 1832 began. The United States’ militia was called into action, too. They mobilized and attacked, but Black Hawk’s band evened the score with a victory over Maj. Isaiah Stillman along the Rock River, near present-day Byron in Ogle County. The skirmishes led to a foot chase and several more battles as the Indians fled up toward southwestern Wisconsin, where they were eventually handed a final defeat at the Battle of Bad Axe. One of the battle sites along the war’s path is about 15 miles north of Lake Carroll at a place called Kellogg’s Grove. The 2-day battle, which took place over a few miles of land, left 17 dead, and the need for a burial site.

He built forts in the grasslands, tracked animals, and fished in the river. “It was a good place to grow up, a good time to grow up,” Castro says. “Everybody was poor, but nobody really knew it.” Castro went on to art school in Chicago (what now is known as the Illinois Institute of Art), but soon enlisted in the Navy, where he trained as a “frogman,” or a combat diver and swimmer. He completed three tours in Vietnam as a frogman, and as a front gunner and sniper for the riverine patrol boats. He transferred to the Navy SEAL team after the war. Castro attended college on the G.I. Bill and earned degrees from the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, and Northern Colorado University. He was an art teacher and wrestling coach at Freeport High School, and he remained in the Navy Reserve, where he was a deep-sea diver, dolphin trainer and performer in the Chicago Air and Water Show. He retired a warrant officer with the Navy SEALs in 1998 and retired from teaching in 2007. A full-time artist, Castro, who’s in his 70s, drew on his humble childhood and his combat experience to craft the Lincoln Statue at Kellogg’s Grove: a 7-foot sculpture of a young Lincoln upon his arrival there, where he stepped onto the blood-soaked battlefield and surveyed the slain soldiers. The statue, formally titled “Captain Abraham Lincoln-Black Hawk War, Burial Detail,” was placed at the park in 2018 Black Hawk War memorial near Kent, about 15 miles west of Freeport in Stephenson County. (Editor’s note: Lincoln was a captain early in the war when chasing Black Hawk’s band, but was mustered out of service days after the defeat at Stillman’s Run, before serving at Kellogg’s Grove. When he was mustered back in, he returned as a private.)

Most portrayals of Lincoln show him as a lawyer, statesman, or president, Castro said. This depiction shows him as a soldier, “a 22-year-old who marched his men through arduous terrain … and witnessed such casualties,” Castro says. “I tried to picture him on that march, the apprehension, the worry,” Castro says. “I tried to picture him getting to that site – the compassion, the anger. “War adds the perspective of battle and death to a soldier’s character,” he adds. “No doubt, this experience would reflect in his decisions when he became president.” A nonprofit group, the Capt. Abraham Lincoln Sculpture Committee, raised the $80,000 needed for the sculpture. “I just feel this is a project worth pursuing,” Bettye Corbin, project manager for the group, said in 2015. “It’s something that I feel is important to the community because this is a part of Abraham Lincoln’s life that very few people … are aware of.”

Pvt. Abraham Lincoln, following the trail in the company of Capt. Jacob M. Early, was one of several men assigned to the grim task, laying the dead to rest where they had fallen. Lincoln helped bury five of the men and the rest were buried throughout the area where they fell. Fifty years later, local farmers relocated the remains on top of a nearby hill overlooking the Yellow Creek Valley. The mound was hallmarked by a limestone statue in 1901, followed later by government-issued military burial stones. Lincoln was stationed at Dixon’s Ferry (present-day Dixon) throughout much of his time in north-central Illinois. It is widely believed that he also was present at the burial of dead after the Battle of Stillman’s Run; a monument there tells the story of his presence, but supplementary proof of Lincoln’s time there has yet to surface. His work at Kellogg’s Grove, however, has been documented by Lin-

coln historians, such as the famous poet Carl Sandburg in “Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years.” Following Black Hawk’s band was done by traversing through trails established by the few white settlers who lived in the area. One trail that connected points in the area was Kellogg’s Trail, named after original settler Oliver W. Kellogg. It was part of a larger trail that connected Dixon’s Ferry with Prairie du Chien in Wisconsin. As researched by Polo historian Russell Poole in the mid-20th century, Kellogg’s Trail meandered in a northwesterly direction from Buffalo Grove to Kellogg’s Grove. The trail was about 2 miles northeast of the northeast corner of the Lake Carroll community, close enough to see – as Lincoln likely would have – what would become Illinois’ largest private community nearly 150 years later.

Sandburg transcribed what Lincoln would later write about his experience at Kellogg’s Grove: “I remember just how those men looked as we rode up the little hill where their camp was. The red light of the morning sun was streaming upon them as they lay, head towards us on the ground. And every man had a round red spot on top of his head, about as big as a dollar where the redskins had taken his scalp. It was frightful, but it was grotesque, and the red sunlight seemed to paint everything all over. I remember one man had on buckskin breeches.” The Black Hawk War represented Lincoln’s only military service as a soldier; later, as President, he was commander in chief of all Union military forces during the Civil War. Confederate President Jefferson Davis also saw action during the Black Hawk War, but was nowhere near Lincoln: He was assigned to a group that escorted Black Hawk into captivity after the defeat at Bad Axe. The area around the monument later became a park, which is maintained by Stephenson County; it also has interpretive signs, a large picnic shelter, and a playground with a see-saw with the original wooden plank, and a metal slide that shines bright in the sun. In 2018, a 7-foot statue of Lincoln was installed in the middle of the park, created by Savanna native Ramon “Jay” Castro, a tribute to the private turned President who helped shape a nation.

DIRECTIONS — From Lake Carroll via Pearl City: Take state Route 73 north to Pearl City, and turn left on Goldmine Road for 1.5 miles, turn right on Flack Road for 1.5 miles, and then left on Blackhawk Road for 1 mile; the park will on the left after a sharp left-hand curve. From Lake Carroll via Loran: Take Zier Road west to Carter Road, and turn right at the ‘T’ intersection at Loran Road. Veer left at the church after going through the village of Loran, and follow for 1.5 miles. Turn left at a ‘T’ intersection with Kent Road, follow for 2 miles, and turn right at Blackhawk Road; the park will on the right 1 mile away. MORE ABOUT KELLOGG’S GROVE — The grove is named for Oliver W. Kellogg, the brother-in-law of Dixon’s founder, John W. Dixon. Kellogg settled in the area in 1827 and built a log cabin and barn there. He went on to help develop a wagon trail from Galena to Peoria. Though most of the 56 acres of Kellogg’s Grove is privately owned, Stephenson County obtained 1 1/2 acres in 1886 and turned it into a park that includes a monument and small cemetery commemorating the Battle of Kellogg’s Grove and the Battle of Waddams Grove. The park also includes a picnic area, shelter and playground. The Kellogg’s Grove battle site was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and a log cabin was moved there in 1981. A statue of Abraham Lincoln by local Freeport sculptor Jay Castro was installed at the park in June 2018 (see the story on pages 16 & 17 for more about on the statue.)

igh school cross country has been a great leap forward for Jason Prowant. The 14-year-old Eastland High School freshman is finding out, race by race, that the finish line seems a lot closer than it did in prior races. In just his first month of donning the orange and blue of the Cougars, he improved his time by 4 minutes from his first race. While Jason doesn’t have as much cross country experience as several of the seniors on this year’s squad, he’s not the only one. He has plenty of teammates in the same boat, but they’re taking advantage of an opportunity this year to still compete in extra-curriculars while other sports, such as football and volleyball, have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the goal of improving with every race he runs, Jason nearly broke 22 minutes just four races into the schedule, and averaged around 21.5 minutes before the postseason meets. When he’s not meandering the hills at Lake Carroll, or other fields or valleys, Jason, the son of Chris and Carrie Prowant of Lake Carroll, also participates on the track and field team and the school’s academic bowl club. nnn

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT RUNNING CROSS COUNTRY? The main thing that I enjoy is the constant urge to improve. With each race, the main goal is not to beat somebody else, but to beat your own time. DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU EVER RAN A RACE? The first time I ran in a race was in eighth grade at Oregon. I didn’t know what to expect, where to go, what to do, or anything, really. It was a pretty short race; the course was only a mile and a half. I was nervous at the beginning, but once I got going I settled in and got a half-decent time.

ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR FAMILY RUN FOR FUN? My mom has run for a long time, and probably was my inspiration to start running. She has given me a lot of advice throughout the year and a half that I have been running.

WHO INFLUENCED YOU TO WANT TO JOIN THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM? My mom was a huge inspiration in me joining last year, as well as a few people from the team itself.

WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE ON THE HIGH SCHOOL TEAM BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? Although there have been good moments and painful moments, I have enjoyed my experience.

junior high when I got lost with somebody else. It wasn’t funny then because we ended up running further, but it’s one of those things you look back on and laugh at.

THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON CAN START OUT PRETTY WARM BUT FINISH UP COLD. DO YOU PREFER ONE OVER THE OTHER WHEN YOU’RE RUNNING? When it comes to running, I would rather it be cold than hot. Normally, I don’t mind the heat, but when you’re running, it basically adds another 15 degrees to whatever the temperature is.

HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AFFECTED YOUR RUNNING AT ALL; ANY INCONVENIENCES AND SUCH? The main problem that COVID-19 had is that we had to cancel some practices due to poor weather. This is because if we get a cold, people might think we have COVID and kick us out of school.

WHO IS SOMEONE ON THE TEAM WHOSE TALENT MIGHT COME AS A SURPRISE? To be completely honest, there are too many people this year that have been a surprise. Around 10 people are running cross country for the first time this year, and when you start to run for the first time, it doesn’t come on to you right away. There were several new people this year that jumped right in and did really well.

IF YOU WANTED TO ENCOURAGE SOMEONE TO JOIN THE CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? The main thing that I would tell them is that when you run, you unlock a whole new side of yourself that you never knew you had.

SAY SOMEONE HAS NEVER RAN COMPETITIVELY IN THEIR LIFE; WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM TO GET THEM TO WANT TO TRY IT OUT? If they have ran, but just not competitively, then I would tell them just to run like they normally would. With running, you strive to beat yourself, not to beat others.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME, OUTSIDE OF GOLF AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES? I am a big history nerd, so I spend a lot of time watching documentaries and just researching history. WHAT WILL YOU DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I don’t know exactly what I want a major in, but it would have to be some sort of history or engineering. I would probably go to the University of Wisconsin – Platteville.

ow have things been going for members of the Lake Carroll Quilt Club? Sew far, sew good – and there’s no end in sight. This group of fabric fans has been gathering for more than 25 years, giving pieces a chance — be they squares or circles or triangles — as they put together the shapes of things to come to create their quilts. They combine colors, from amber and amethyst to zaffre and zomp, and express themselves in their designs – flowers, Americana, the story of the lake they love, even John Wayne. They swap patterns and pieces, trade tips and techniques. And they have a good time. Their creativity is endless, and it’s just part of what has kept the club going for so long, said Phyllis Davies, one of the club’s founding members. The other part? Members like Phyllis, who are dedicated to the fine art of fabric. Phyllis has seen many members come and go, and today is one of nearly 30 who meet once a month – typically at 1 p.m. on the first Tuesday at Plumtree Lodge – to enjoy company, camaraderie, and “circle time” to show off their creations.

“We keep getting new members,” she said. “They’re just very excited about what they are doing, and it just makes it so fun to come. We’ve made so many friends and have done lots and lots of quilts.” Quilting has seen a renewed interest in recent months, as people who had to stay home during the pandemic found themselves with extra time on their hands, and they used that time to hone their handiwork skills, or pick up new ones. According to a recent article in New York magazine, even clothing designers have embraced the craft, with quilted clothing turning up on runways. Phyllis, the most senior member of the club, still sews quilts by hand, while younger members have mastered machines to craft their quilts — but whether they stitch by hand or by

machine,they all have one thing in common: creativity. “It brings out your creativity,” she said. “It brings out what gives you joy. It’s kind of cliche, but it really does bring joy. You have assorted fabrics and designs – squares, circles, triangles – and the color combinations and the activity of making something.” If you’re thinking about joining the club, but you’ve never quilted or sewn, no problem. They’ll show you. There are many types of quilts: traditional or modern; pieced or appliqued; hand quilted, long-armed, or just tied; there are also baby quilts, holiday quilts, comforters, picnic blankets, wall hangings and table runners – in all, thousands of quilt patterns that range from simple to challenging.

“Circle time” is when members sit on chairs in a circle – these days 6 feet apart from one another – to view each other’s creations and show off their own; and if anyone is short of a supplies, their fellow members are always willing to help out. They’ll also swap patterns. These days, the internet has made researching patterns easier, but many books still are available to help a person get started. “They’ve got Pinterest on the internet, and you can stay there for hours and watch quilts,” Phyllis said. Their nifty needlework does more than just let them explore their creative side; it helps them find ways to help others, too. Members are more than happy to donate quilts to help local health, shelter and youth organizations. Among the organizations and fundraisers the club has helped in recent years: Project Linus, inspired by that most famous of blanket lovers, Linus VanPelt of the “Peanuts” comic strip, has resulted in hundreds of blankets every month being donated to children in need. There;s also Sadie’s Dream for a Cure, which the club has sewn tote bags to give to kids battling cancer. The club also has made blankets for donation and show for Mount Carroll’s Mayfest and Lanark’s Old Settler Days. Another big event every year for the club is celebrating National Quilt Day on Sept. 12. This year, to celebrate their craft and share it with others, many members hung quilts outside their homes, and others were displayed at the Clubhouse. It was “a good way to honor a craft that has stood the test of time,” Club President Loretta Dick said. While there are those who might not bother with quilting because they have other sources of entertainment, the ones who do decide to give it a try are hooked. “Quilting brings joy to those of us who watch our projects go from an idea to a finished blanket or wall hanging,” she said. “It also brings joy to the people we create them for. Although quilting has always been a source of comfort and relaxation, it has been a lifesaver during the [coronavirus] pandemic. The beauty of quilts is so much more than just the finished product.”

Leading a financial institution during the unprecedented times of 2020 hasn’t been easy, but then again, Wilhelms Saar said she isn’t the first bank president to navigate uncharted waters, pointing out her grandfather opened the bank during the Great Depression. “With the foundation dad and grandfather established in the bank, it is a true honor to carry out their legacy and build upon our growth,” she said. The bank leadership passing generation to generation is not unlike the many agriculture clients the bank serves, who care for the land just as their parents and grandparents have done before them. Agriculture lending, as it was

in the early years of the bank, remains a key component to First State Bank, said Amanda Klinefelter, the bank’s marketing specialist. Added Wilhelms Saar: “We have long-standing relationships with many of our clients, especially our agriculture clients. Many of our ag clients manage multigenerational businesses and we treasure our deep relationships with them. Our bank has long-standing specialties in many areas, but our roots began and continue with the knowledgeable experiences and leadership in agriculture lending.” First State Bank also has deep ties with the Lake Carroll community. Omar Wilhelms worked closely with the community’s developer, and he and his wife, Janice, bought one of the lake’s original waterfront lots. He also purchased the property on Payne Road for Lake Carroll’s own full-service bank, which was built 12 years ago. Ten employees from the bank’s three locations also call Lake Carroll home.

Wilhelms Saar began her work at First State Bank of Shannon, Polo and Lake Carroll in the late 1990s, helping to build the wealth management group while witnessing her father’s leadership. She said for her father, the heart of banking was its relationships. She said she’s often reminded of his philosophy as she greets clients in the lobby. “One thing that dad would always pride himself in was developing a relationship with every client,” Wilhelms Saar said. “In the digital age, our business is changing and we need to adapt to that, but we cannot deviate from our roots of taking time with our clients to develop lasting relationships.” These relationships go beyond person-to-person, and extend into community support.
