instrumental in guiding the district into the Common Core Learning Standards implemented by the state, District 44 Board President Brooke Wozniak said. The standards establish clear expectations for what students should learn in English, language arts and mathematics at each grade level, according to the Illinois State Board of Education. “He has been a fabulous leader,” Wozniak said. “We’re going to miss him, but we wish him well.” The district has not yet

started its search for Blanche’s successor, Wozniak added. While Blanche does not plan to officially retire after leaving his position, he added that he is not actively pursuing future employment opportunities. Coming to Lombard was one of the best things to happen to Blanche, both professionally and personally, he said. “I am indebted to the community,” he said. Lombard Elementary School District 44 is made up of seven schools and has roughly 3,100 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

LOMBARD – Twenty-three days, 172 likes and growing. “The total reach is pretty phenomenal,” said Lombard Village Trustee Dan Whittington, who earlier this month created a Facebook page geared toward residents and business owners living and working in District 1 where he serves. Whittington created the page, District 1 – Lombard, on Jan. 5 and within a week, it began to take off. Mainly through word of mouth and sharing, a feature on Facebook that allows users to share content with other users, District 1- Lombard had 30 to 40 followers. “It’s a communication tool, and I can garner ideas from folks in the district,” Whittington said. “People out there have some great ideas.”

The top vote getter was for a grocery store – specifically through the Prairie Food Coop, a Lombard-based company seeking to open community-based cooperatives that focus on local, sustainable food.

LOMBARD – A student-organized food competition will be hosted tonight at St. Pius X Parish School which will pit teams against each other in an effort to raise money for charities. The inaugural Food Wars Challenge for Charity will run from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the school’s Social Center. The event was inspired by Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” and Food Network shows like “Chopped.” “We wanted the kids to be more involved in charity work,” said Barbara Dawson, advancement director at St. Pius X. “They’re always asking to do bake sales and car washes, so we said ‘let’s challenge them.’”

The free event features 18 teams and more than 65 junior high students and recent graduates of the school, said Dawson, who described it as a “food fest for the community” similar to the Taste of Lombard. From the beginning, the planning and organization was up to the students, Daw-

The “St. Judes Judettes” will be selling homemade cookies, cupcakes, brownies, breads and muffins, along with soda and salads from Labriola Baking in Oak Brook. Labriola is a team sponsor, along with Lilac Bakery in Lombard, Mike’s Market in Villa Park and Cafe Laguardio in Chicago. The team will support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Chicago. Originally, the goal was to award the most profitable team with the total revenue, which would all be donated to the team’s support charity, Dawson said. However, the team captains will be polled prior to the event, and the new goal may involve dividing the funds to support multiple charities.

Miracles From Mia was born in 2006. “I feel like when I do it, it honors my daughter,” said Georgi Clements, a Villa Park resident. Mia was born with bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney disease, which means neither of her kidneys functioned properly. Friends and family pooled their money to help pay for Mia’s necessary kidney transplant. “We had really good insurance, but no insurance lasts forever,” she said. The fund was originally called Miracles For Mia (note “for” instead of “from”), but Mia died before she received a kidney.

The nonprofit’s biggest annual fundraiser is Cupid’s Kisses, conducted at the Diplomat West in Elmhurst where Clements said owner Tom Shubalis always makes an extra effort to help with the event. Each year, 200 to 300 people buy tickets for the benefit. This year, the benefit will support two families in the area. Aidan Schwarz, a 3-year-old from Lombard, weighed just 4

pounds, 4 ounces when he was born premature at 36 weeks. He had trouble eating safely because he would aspirate. Aidan was diagnosed with Danon disease, a condition that causes weakness in the heart and skeletal muscles in addition to mental delays. He now eats on his own and just started walking this year, but his parents expect Aidan will need a heart transplant in the future and possibly braces or even a wheelchair as his muscles get weaker. “He’s a happy little boy,” his mother Rachel Schwarz said. “He likes to be social.” Aidan started preschool this year at Community Presbyterian Church in Lombard where his father, Eric, is a youth director. LOMBARD – It doesn’t seem that long ago that Whitney Cimaglia was walking the halls as a student at Glenbard East High School. Still anchored in Lombard, her career path has not led her far in terms of geography, but the 28-year-old is definitely on her way up. As the new president of the Lombard Area Whitney Chamber of Cimaglia Commerce and Industry, youth has its advantages. “I am hoping that it encourages younger professionals to get involved,” said Cimaglia, a branch manager at Inland Bank, 837 S. Westmore Ave. in Lombard. Cimaglia, a Lombard native and Glenbard East alumna, has been a chamber member for five years. She began her leadership role as a chamber director three years ago, and last year had the title of vice president. “The idea is that every director that comes onto the board has the ability and the desire to move up the ranks,” said Cimaglia, who was appointed president earlier this month at the Chamber’s annual membership meeting. “She is dynamic and she’s very intelligent,” said Lombard Village Trustee Dan Whittington, who is also the chamber’s current vice president. “She is a good fit – all of the [chamber] board members believe that.” Along with common goals like keeping the chamber board engaged, developing business growth and local promotion through social media outlets and networking events, Cimaglia hopes to draw members from neighboring communities including Glen Ellyn and Villa Park. She also wants to put a focus on member businesses that may not be able to get out of the office for events, but still want to be active in the chamber. “We care about all the businesses in town, and we’re going to do the promoting work for you,” Cimaglia said.

A new mobile application, “MyChamberApp,” is also a feature used by the chamber, and allows consumers – both local and visiting – to quickly identify local businesses. “Local members [businesses] are on the app, and it shows where people can dine, shop and stay at when they’re here,” Cimaglia said. The chamber maintains a close relationship with the village, something that goes back to late Lombard President William Mueller, who Cimaglia said was very heavily involved with the chamber. “The relationship was very important to him,” she said. “He showed up to everything, and I think he laid that example for the future [village] presidents to come. The village is very supportive.” Cimaglia admits that she wouldn’t have envisioned herself in this role so quickly when she began five years ago, but that it’s a “real honor.” “It’s been crazy how many people have come up to me and said that it’s refreshing and encouraging,” said Cimaglia, one of the youngest managers at her bank. “Sometimes you can get push-back because it’s assumed that you’re young and don’t know everything, but so far, I have not felt that at all.”

LOMBARD – A firefighter from York Center Fire Protection District was injured last week while battling a box alarm blaze at a duplex in Glen Ellyn, according to a news release from the Lombard Fire Department. The injured firefighter was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, according to the release. More than a dozen area fire departments responded to a call around 11:30 a.m. Jan. 24 at a two-story, multi-family building at 1180 Brighton Place in Glen Ellyn, the release said. The call was placed by plumbers working inside the building.

Responding crews arrived to heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the building, according to the release. Glen Ellyn Police Deputy Chief William Holmer, who was on the scene, evacuated residents from the building. The fire was quickly upgraded to a box alarm, which brought a response from neighboring departments, the release said, including Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Villa Park, Hinsdale, Westmont, Wheaton, Addison, Oakbrook Terrace and York Center. The estimated damage is more than $100,000. The fire appeared to have started where plumbers were working, the release said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Joining forces to boost youth mentoring The impact one person can have on another, especially that of a caring adult on the life of a vulnerable youth, can last a lifetime. As coordinator of the MetroMentors program at Metropolitan Family Services DuPage, my job is to match such mentors and mentees. Effective mentoring relationships can help increase children’s self-esteem, social competence, academic achievement and positive life choices. And mentors often find they gain much by giving their time, attention and support. Though many stories have been told about the benefits of mentoring, another story that should be shared is about the COMMUNITY organizational partnerships VOICE that are helping programs Marsha such as MetroMentors survive Ndoko and grow. In our case, joining forces with local school entities such as District 45 and organizations such as Parkview Community Church in Glen Ellyn has been a recipe for success. MetroMentors provides weekly mentoring opportunities in schools by working with various DuPage school districts, including District 45. Through Kathy Gerber, the guidance counselor at Jefferson Middle School, we at MetroMentors discovered that Parkview was interested in deepening its mentoring outreach. Steve King, worship arts pastor at Parkview Community Church, said: “As we considered the requirements of starting up a mentoring program with the District 45 schools, we knew there were areas of expertise we were not qualified to address, such as the administration, screening, oversight and coordination between the schools, students and mentors. MetroMentors has filled that role with Parkview and District 45. The result has been a partnership that maximizes our ability to focus on recruiting and engaging mentors with students at the schools.” As a result of the partnership, on average, students with mentors saw a 70 percent increase in academic performance, an 82 percent improvement in social or emotional challenges, an 85 percent improvement in learning, as well as performance increases in a number of other areas. MetroMentors greatly appreciates the support of Parkview Community Church, District 45, other participating school districts and other partners who are helping to support mentoring services and benefit the greater DuPage community. MetroMentors always has a demand for mentors, especially adult males and volunteers who can donate time during the school day. We live on a wider street and two cars tried to pass and knocked the mirror off a visiting guest’s car. Do you think they stopped? People are very quick to judge the village for their poor job of cleaning the streets, but do they ever consider the residents who don’t move their cars properly?

I was so disappointed to see My Favorite Toy Store close in Downers Grove at the end of last year. Its name truly described our family’s feeling about the store! Michael Geisen was a one-of-a-kind owner, personally talking with my daughters when they were young, showing them the latest toy or game and letting them try it out. Energetic employees shared the owner’s philosophy of encouraging kids to have fun in his store. After My Favorite Toy Store came to Downers [Grove], I never visited the big-box stores again for toys, games or crafts. They just didn’t have that personal touch. We have fond memories walking downtown on summer afternoons and “playing” at the family-friendly toy store, it will be greatly missed!

Clements remembers finding someone to donate a door to a family who needed a new one for their home. Every family that’s been a Cupid’s Kisses recipient receives free tickets to the event each year because, Clements explained, the event is more than a fundraiser. “What’s really neat is the families start talking to each other,” Clements said. “They learn something from each other.”

LOMBARD – Subzero temperatures and dangerous wind chills hit the Lombard area Sunday night into Tuesday, forcing local schools and government buildings to close. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures hit a low of minus 11 early Tuesday morning, with wind chills as low as minus 30. Locally, schools in districts 44, 45 and 87 were closed. The cold also forced major delays along Metra lines. The cold snap wasn’t quite as frigid as the polar vortex that descended on the western suburbs Jan. 6 to 7. That freeze brought temperatures as low as minus 15 and wind chills as low as minus 45.

Common Core State Standards A Statement by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) Catholic schools have a long-standing commitment to academic excellence that is rooted in the faith- based mission of Catholic education. The Common Core State Standards in no way compromise the Catholic identity or educational program of a Catholic school. The Common Core State Standards initiative, begun in 2007, is a state-led, bipartisan effort that is not a requirement for participation in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) or any other federally- funded program, and there are no mandates for any Catholic school to follow any federal rules if they adopt the Common Core. Adoption of the Common Core is voluntary; individual states, Catholic dioceses and other private schools make their own decisions about whether to adopt the standards. The Common Core State Standards are a set of high-quality academic expectations that all students should master by the end of each grade level. The standards establish consistent learning goals for all students that focus on preparing them to succeed in college and careers in a globally competitive workplace. The standards define and clearly communicate grade-specific goals and inform parents about learning outcomes, making it easier for parents to collaborate with teachers in helping their children achieve success. The Common Core State Standards are not a curriculum. A curriculum includes what is taught, when it is taught, how it is taught and what materials to use. None of these items are included in the Common Core State Standards. For Catholic schools, all of these elements will continue to be determined by diocesan superintendents, principals and teachers working to meet the needs of their students. The Common Core represents a fundamental shift in the teaching and learning process. The Common Core establishes clear, measurable goals for students that assist teachers in making instructional decisions. The standards place emphasis on creativity, critical and analytical thinking and application to curriculum content. The Common Core is not a national curriculum. It guides the way that instruction takes place in each classroom, allowing the Catholic school to develop its own curriculum content. An excellent Catholic school provides a rigorous academic curriculum that integrates faith and knowledge. As trained professionals, Catholic school administrators and teachers continually seek the best instructional methods for educating students. In the past, dioceses and schools have developed their own standards or adapted state standards for use with their own curriculum. Some will continue to do this. To assist those incorporating the new standards, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and partners in Catholic education established the Common Core Catholic Identity Initiative (CCCII). CCCII provides resources to design and direct the implementation of Common Core within the culture and context of a Catholic school curriculum. Bakersfield gives fresh spin to American fare WESTMONT – With its open floor plan and California-style setting, Bakersfield gives west suburban diners a fresh experience, and some good food, too. The restaurant pairs its modern, airy atmosphere with a made-from-scratch menu that’s mostly American with accents from a number of cuisines. Bakersfield touts its homemade fare featuring fresh ingredients picked from just across Ogden Avenue at its sister store Standard Market, an upscale grocery that chose Westmont for its first location in 2011. A companion and I visited Bakersfield on a recent weeknight, a chilly evening that made complimentary valet service quite beneficial. As we entered the restaurant, our eyes immediately went to the far side, where diners can see a half-dozen or so chefs busy preparing the night’s dishes. The lack of a wall gives a peek into the preparation involved, especially appealing to foodies. The open setting continues throughout the restaurant, with a three-sided bar on one end and an elevated seating area on the opposite, although diners get an intimate experience with raised booths that are just tall enough. The guacamole was creamy and fresh, and the salsa had a nice hint of chipotle. If you’re a fan of Mexican cuisine, definitely give it a try. Other appetizer selections at Bakersfield include Pot Roast Sliders, Crispy Thai Shrimp and Blue Crab Dip. For her main course, my date, at first indecisive, opted for the pan-roasted Chilean Sea Bass. She loved the dish, and said it was just the right amount. Class: Senior Position: Guard Impact: Poole wasn’t much of a factor on the varsity team a year ago, but has stepped up to be second in the team in scoring this season at around 10 points per game. Poole is a quality outside shooter and shares ballhandling responsibilities for Willowbrook.

teams in the conference. It was really nice to get a win against them.

Was that game one of your better varsity games overall? Yeah, it’s probably one of my better games of the year. I made a couple mistakes, a couple turnovers I’d like to take back, but I like the result that we got.

Did the team’s experience in close games this season help you down the stretch against the Mustangs? It’s happened so many times. We drill it all the time in practice situations like this. That definitely has a lot to do with it.

With the Denver Broncos and quarterback Peyton Manning set to play in the Super Bowl on Sunday, few people can offer the perspective of Ryan Diem. A former teammate of Manning, the Glenbard North graduate played 11 seasons in the NFL as a member of the Indianapolis Colts before retiring in 2011. Still living in Indianapolis with his family, the former offensive lineman is now involved with a couple of different businesses, primarily a software company called CloudOne. Diem and his family return to the Chicago area every year for the Ryan Diem’s Allie & Friends Golf Classic. In nine years, the event has raised more than $1 million for neuroblastoma cancer research. Diem talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about Manning and his own career.

Perhaps more impressive, this is just the fifth Super Bowl in history and the first since the New York Giants played the Buffalo Bills following the 1990 season that the NFL’s top scoring team, Denver with 606 points has faced the leagues number one scoring defense, Seattle with 231 points allowed. It gets better. This is just the second time in Super Bowl history the league’s top team in total offense, Denver – 7,317 total yards, 457.3/game has faced the top defense, Seattle allowing just 4,378 total yards, 273.6/game. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said, “It’s historically as hard as it gets. It can’t get any tougher. They’ve done everything – broken every major

record in the throwing game, points and everything. Peyton’s (Manning) been extraordinary. He’s had the year that everyone would dream to have. I wished him luck and told him I enjoyed watching his college career.” Wilson knows he had a brush with greatness and seems to understand his place in the QB matchup. “They have an unbelievable quarterback in Peyton Manning. I have so much respect for him and what he’s done over his entire career. He deserves all of the credit. He’s an unbelievable quarterback and human being. “Just the energy in this area right now, in New Jersey. All of you guys (media) here in the New York area, it’s going to be a great scene. It’s going to be a great game. It’s going to be a battle to the end and I’m really looking forward to that game!”

You’ve just got to come out here, be yourself and compete.” A Bears fan, Garoppolo said Jay Cutler is his favorite Chicago quarterback. The two might differ in personality, but Cutler has plenty of confidence, something Garoppolo said he knows he needs to show during the draft process, and he can gain that more with his arm than his words. “If you belong, you belong. If you don’t, you’re going to stick out and people are going to know that you don’t belong,” he said. As the days went by in Mobile, Fisch saw a trend. Maybe Garoppolo read the articles about his rising draft stock, but more likely, he saw what he was capable of against top competition. “Each day, I have noticed a trend in a way, that his confidence has continued to improve and therefore his charisma has showed up,” Fisch said. “He has a nice presence about himself.”

MOBILE, Ala. – Regardless of what the unknown team sought when asking Jimmy Garoppolo, “Name as many things as you can do with a brick in a minute,” the personnel folks probably were impressed with how the Eastern Illinois quarterback handled his interview. “All the questions have a purpose behind them,” Garoppolo said at the Senior Bowl, laughing about the odd question he received. “Sometimes you don’t know what they are; you’ve just got to answer truthfully, really.” A linebacker until his junior year at Rolling Meadows High School, Garoppolo didn’t receive a single Division I offer. Four years later, his performance at the East-West Shrine game last week earned him a last-minute invitation to the Senior Bowl – a long journey that continues to be positive for Garoppolo. “Last week helped me out,” he said
