Starved Rock State Park stands as a unique destination in Illinois, drawing visitors seeking solace from the hustle and bustle since the late 1800s. Even now, over a century later, it remains a sanctuary. As you wind your

way through the towering trees bordering the park, a sense of departure from the familiar Illinois landscape envelops you. Spanning over 13 miles, the park’s trails weave along and above the Illinois River, offering a plethora of breathtaking vistas, fishing, boating opportunities, and serene spots to unwind amidst nature’s grandeur. Regardless of the season, Starved Rock promises an unforgettable experience, leaving indelible memories.

Consistently hailed as the top attraction in Illinois, Starved Rock boasts 18 distinct canyons, with 14 of them showcasing

spectacular seasonal waterfalls. Visitors can traverse a vast network of trails, encountering awe-inspiring panoramas and diverse flora and fauna. Beyond hiking, the park’s historic lodge and informative visitor center host an array of engaging activities including guided hikes, trolley tours, wildlife presentations, live concerts, and dining options, ensuring there’s something for every visitor.
You can borrow binoculars, dog bowls, and dog leashes for FREE at the front desk of the Visitor Center.

The Starved Rock Visitor Center
This is the perfect place to start your State Park adventure! Here, you’ll find interactive educational displays, free videos on the park’s history, hiking maps and a bookstore! While you’re there, be sure to check out Trailhead Concessions and Gifts for a great selection of hiking provisions.

From the Visitor Center, take a short 0.3-mile hike towards the park’s namesake, Starved Rock. The summit is home to one of

the best views in the entire park, where you can marvel at the Illinois River, or watch birds plunge for fish near the base of the Illinois Waterway Lock and Dam.
STOP 3:
St. Louis Canyon
Just a few minutes to the west of the Visitor Center, off IL-178, you’ll find the parking lot for St. Louis Canyon. At the end of this 0.4-mile hike you’ll be treated to a beautiful box canyon, complete with a tall waterfall and hidden alcove that runs behind it. Even when falls aren’t in season, the canyon’s towering walls of intricate sandstone make for quite the sight.
Starved Rock’s sandstone canyons, often graced with waterfalls after heavy rainfall, offer mesmerizing sights. St. Louis, LaSalle, French, Wildcat, Ottawa, and Kaskaskia Canyons stand out among the best, each with its unique charm. From St. Louis Canyon’s spring-fed waterfall to LaSalle Canyon’s walkbehind feature, there’s an enchantment around every corner. French Canyon’s accessibility from the Visitor Center and Wildcat’s towering cascade exceeding 70 feet further add to the park’s allure.

STOP 4:
One of the easiest hikes in the parks, just so happens to lead to one of the most beautiful canyons! Located just 0.4-miles southeast of the Visitor Center, French Canyon offers a towering 45-foot tall waterfall during the rainy season, and beautifully eroded Saint Peters sandstone all year round. After a rainfall, admire the colorful streaks left on the canyon walls by the mineralrich water.

During winter, a stretch of the Illinois River near Starved Rock transforms into a haven for eagles, drawing these majestic birds with wingspans reaching eight feet. The nearby Plum Island Sanctuary provides a secluded wintering site for these eagles, offering optimal conditions for roosting and hunting. Visitors can observe these magnificent creatures from designated overlooks, such as Lover’s Leap and Eagle Cliff, equipped with binoculars available for loan at the Visitor Center.

STOP 5:
LaSalle Canyon
Located about a mile from the Parkman’s Plain parking lot, LaSalle Canyon boasts a wide picturesque canyon and jutting sandstone shelf, suspended 20 feet off the ground. Best of all, your hike to the canyon will wind you along the Illinois River, providing you with a great view of the river and a chance to see some rare birds and foliage.
STOP 6:
Water Cruise or Trolley Tour
If you’re looking to get out of the canyons and take a break from hiking, or if you have a party member looking for a less active excursion, you can reserve a spot aboard Starved Rock’s Eagle One Water Cruise (running Jun. – Oct.) or take a Trolley Tour (running year-round). These narrated tours merge history and sightseeing for a truly one of a kind view of Starved Rock.
STOP 7:
Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center
After a full day of hiking and sightseeing, cap your trip off with a stay at Starved Rock Lodge and Conference Center. This historic hotel nestled in nature, features a Cliffside panorama of the Illinois River, an indoor pool complex, on-site restaurants and a beautiful rustic lounge. You can choose from historic lodge accommodations, spacious hotel rooms or charming log cabins.
Starved Rock’s canyons and overlooks provide captivating vistas of sandstone cliffs, lush foliage, and the mighty Illinois River. Council Bluffs Overhang and the eponymous Starved Rock offer panoramic views, steeped in both natural beauty and historical significance.
In winter, many of Starved Rock’s waterfalls transform into stunning ice sculptures, enhancing the park’s appeal during colder months. Notable ice formations can be found in St. Louis, French, Wildcat, Ottawa, and Kaskaskia canyons, showcasing nature’s artistic prowess.
Starved Rock ranks among the top destinations for dog-friendly hiking in the Midwest. Trails like the River Trail cater to canine companions, while the Lodge’s outdoor Veranda even offers a special menu for dogs, ensuring a memorable experience for both pets and their owners.

With its labyrinthine sandstone canyons and dense forest canopy, Matthiessen offers a stark contrast to Starved Rock’s sprawling trails and lofty bluff overlooks, beckoning visitors to immerse themselves in its natural splendor.

Nestled along the northern banks of the Illinois River, Buffalo Rock State Park offers a harmonious blend of rustic prairie trails and captivating cliffside panoramas, making it a cherished haven in LaSalle County’s landscape. With a rich tapestry of history, this park has

witnessed the presence of Indigenous American tribes, served as a sanctuary for religious groups, and even housed a tuberculosis sanatorium during the early 20th century. Today, it stands as a truly unique destination, seamlessly weaving together the realms of fine art and conservation.
Situated just 3 miles west of Ottawa, Illinois, Buffalo Rock has long been a favored destination for picnics and serves as an ideal terrain for novice hikers. The park beckons with two distinct trails, each offering a unique journey: the River Bluff Trail winds alongside the Illinois River, providing ample opportunities for birdwatching, while the Woodland Trail immerses visitors in the serene

beauty of trees, wildlife, and the striking “Effigy Tumuli” mounds crafted by visionary earthworks artist Michael Heizer. Drawing inspiration from Indigenous American burial grounds, these monumental sculptures, depicting five colossal animals including a snake, turtle, catfish, frog, and water strider, offer a glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage.

Nestled along the Illinois River in Marseilles, Illini State Park is a serene public space offering guests the perfect place to hold a picnic or family gathering. This 510-acre park boasts not only incredible views of the river, but also 100+ picturesque campsites, a boat ramp for easy river access and ample places for anglers to fish for Crappie, Bass, Bluegill and skating pool has frozen over, and the large sledding hill is covered in snow. LaSalle County is also home to two spectacular county-operated parks. These parks boast some of the regions’ signature prairie and forest paths, alongside other great amenities like fishing ponds, horseback riding trails and two brand new playgrounds offering modern kid-friendly equipment. Here’s a look at these great lesser-known parks:

Donated to LaSalle County by its namesake, Catlin occupies the transition zone from the Grand Prairie natural division to the upper Mississippi/Illinois River bottomlands. Explore the abundance of aquatic flora and fauna in the wetlands and lowland creek.
