eople aren’t the only ones who call Lake Carroll home; plenty of their best friends do too, and if a group of pet lovers has their way, every dog will be able to have a day in the park. Jane Moll and Jennifer Reardon are leading an effort to create a dog park at Lake Carroll. The concept still is in the idea phase, but they’ve garnered enough support from residents to get the ball rolling — and give pets a place to chase that ball. A dog’s best friends ... Jane Moll and Jennifer Reardon are leading an effort to create a dog park at Lake Carroll. Reardon (at left with her 5-month-old Aussie Bernedoodle, Koda, and daughter Ocie, 3) said dog parks not only benefit dogs, but their owners, too. “Open spaces, like the dog park, include social activity and mental activity for seniors and younger people, so it’s a way to combine everybody to get inclusion and engagement.” Moll (at right, kneeling behind the family dog, Aurora, with her daughter, Chelsey Heckman, and her sons Cruz, 7, and Cavin, 11.) has lived at the lake for more than 40 years and said now’s a good time for a pooch park. “There are so many more dogs that are out here than there used to be.” Moll, who’s called Lake Carroll home for more than 40 years, said that during walks with her 10-year-old German Shepherd, Aurora, she’s noticed the lake’s canine community has been growing right along with the rest of the community. “I’ve noticed all of these dogs around when I would go out and walk Aurora,” Moll said. “There are so many more dogs

that are out here than there used to be.” Moll’s father, John Webermeier, was Lake Carroll’s first general manager, and owned a German Shepherd as well. She was approached by a longtime friend, Gloria Vitelli, after Webermeier’s death in January 2020 about organizing a dog park in his honor. After an informal survey of the community, the idea of a dog park started picking up speed.

“We have a lot of interest,” Moll said. “A lot.” One reason Moll wants to get a dog park going is so that dogs can get out and about without being distracted by other animals that also roam throughout the community, such as deer, and perhaps more notably, the occasional bobcat. Fenced yards are not allowed in Lake Carroll, and invisible pet-fencing doesn’t prevent other animals from poking their noses into people’s property. The park is still just in the early planning stages, with many details — size, maintenance, and rules — still being worked out, but organizers do know they want to be able to keep dues low. That’s why they’re seeking funds through partnerships, donations, grants and other sources, to help keep the costs down for residents.

Dog parks are becoming an increasingly popular amenity in towns — Oregon, Dixon and Freeport have one, and Morrison and Sterling are planning ones — but the closest one to Lake Carroll is in Pearl City, on Goldmine Road, west of town. Besides giving pooches a safe place to play, the parks are a good way for dogs to get to know each other, said Reardon, who has a 5-monthold Aussie Bernedoodle, Koda. “He wants to get socialized,” she said. “He likes to jump around a lot, and [the park] is going to help introduce him to new dogs while they’re off-leash.” Reardon, who’s been researching the benefits of dog parks, said they help not only dogs, but their owners too.

hen it comes to the operation of Lake Carroll, the buck stops with Steven Mack. In his first year as Lake Carroll Board President, Mack takes over at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a toll on the economy, but also at a time when things have been on the upswing at the lake, with more people moving to the lakeside community, and activity picking up. Lake Carroll has put its trust in Mack to help keep the community strong, just as clients in his personal business trust him with their finances.

This year has been one of change in Lake Carroll with two new names at the top: Mack, and General Manager Calvin White, who was hired in February. As the community approaches its 50th anniversary next year, it’s up to Mack and the Board of Directors to lead the way, and help White and his staff make the community thrive for another 50 years and beyond. Mack, who previously was board treasurer before his term as president and has lived at the lake for more than a decade, looks to use his business know-how and familiarity with Lake Carroll to help it grow. He is the owner and president of Mack Investment Securities in Northfield. Before that, Mack worked for his family’s Cadillac business, turning it around to become Chicagoland’s top Cadillac dealer; and was one of Merrill Lynch’s top brokers. How did you decide to make a home in Lake Carroll? We came down from Minocqua, Wisconsin; we had a summer home up there. It was 6 hours of driving, and this is 2 1/4 hours. We looked at everything coming down from the north. We looked at probably about 100 different homes, and we came here and found a nice home that had lots of trouble inside of it, and I was able to make a deal with the seller. It’s quite a place now. How did you seek the leadership roles? I’m the president of the Board of Directors, and I started that in December. Before that, I was treasurer for 2 years, and

before that I was on the finance committee here. Before that, I thought I’d just get a little more involved. I told my wife, “Let’s go see a board meeting.” So we went to watch the meeting, and I thought, “This is real well organized.” Watching all of the interactions, I went to probably a third of the board meetings and decided, “Why not get on the finance committee and help out a little and give back a little?” I did that for a year-and-ahalf or 2 years, then became the secretary. What do you like and enjoy about your role as board president? I enjoy the work. It’s a good challenge. I’m working with very bright people. Being able to see the results of action like a slow-motion train, starting things a couple of years ago all coming through now. I run a business. Lake Carroll is a business. I love running a business. You don’t have to have immediate action, but you need to be able to have a direction. As you go down that, you have to be dynamic, you have to be willing to change a little bit, not be to hot-headed, and that’s the way it’s going to be. You and Calvin White started the Connect and Comment meet-and-greet sessions recently to help bring residents closer to leadership. How has that turned out so far? Calvin used to do something like that out in Colorado, and I’ve done this in the past in my own areas. I don’t mind having conversations that are not easy. In a challenge like this, once you identify those areas that are challenges, then the other side is, can we fix that?

[One example is] the Clubhouse. Last year was a terrible year for the Clubhouse. Lots of losses, loss of use, not as consistent. The staff is good, but I don’t know if we know how to run a restaurant as well as we could. We’ve worked with a bunch of very talented people in a committee, I don’t know how to run a restaurant but they do. But I know how to listen to them on the business side. We came up with what we call “paths.” The paths are ways of, how would you improve? In different ways, though. Then let’s try to get down to the one way, and find out if that’s the way, or maybe it’s the second path, or the third path, let’s come down to a path that may take this place to another area. I’m interested in 5-to-10 years, I’m not interested in how I can change it for the next year, even if I’m not around. I’m just a volunteer passing through time. The next volunteer passing through time hopefully is consistent, hopefully has some business sense, because if you don’t then the place will run out of money. We’re all volunteers trying to get this right. What have you come to love and enjoy about being in this community and the people around you? That’s the exact word. It’s community. I’ve seen lakes from Lake Geneva to Lake Delevan to Green Lake and all of these different ones going north. They’re not necessarily communities. You may have a community where you get to know 20 people, or if you don’t want to know people you don’t have to. But this community is so open. You can come in the Clubhouse, and as soon as you meet 10 people, you’re going to meet 50 people if you want. The different amenities that we have – the golf course, the lake, campground, swimming pool – all of these different things are ways to enjoy something that you don’t usually get in an open area like this. You’re usually in a city and have to wait for traffic, and you got to go through much more to get to enjoy what you get here. Have you been involved in any of the many clubs here? There’s the Yacht Club, which is more a way to get together. The Fishing Club, I don’t know how to catch fish, and wherever the fish are I’ll tell you that I won’t be able to catch them. This is a wellstocked, well-cared-for lake and the lake manager [Joe Rush] is an outstanding person. We’ve got great fishing here, I just don’t know how to catch them. If you wanted to convince someone to come live here, full time or part time, what would be some-

thing to tell them to get them going this way? If they want a home that’s in a safe area, this is a secured area. It’s very safe. The homes are spread out. If they want something to do, if you like to go golfing, or if you like to go boating, you can do things. If they say they don’t mind getting to know new people, then they can keep moving down the line and have the social aspect of this. We’re a very nonjudgmental group out here. We really all get along. It’s very diverse in its own way. What do you see for the future of Lake Carroll? If Lake Carroll hires people and brings people to the board that don’t have conflicts of interest, that’s my big thing that I worry about. If I come to the board and I have an agenda that I want to do something that might benefit me, or benefit some specific thing that is not all Lake Carroll, that’s a risk. If we go forward and get the right idea of taking care of what we have here, then I see this as a community that’s going to continue to be premier; I don’t know of a better community. The future: I think it’s going to be developed more. Financially, I think it’s getting much stronger as we go along. It’s very exciting for the people that live here to see the changes as we go along. It’s also leaning younger as we go along; the demographics are showing that these people are wanting to leave to come to an area like this because they can now work remotely much easier. The biggest surprise to me was finding out how many people are here. There are 2,000 members, but you got 5,800 people here. Obviously the wealth is coming out of Chicago, but at the same time there’s a local feel because the people that are local can come out here and enjoy it as well. When you’re talking 5,800 people, it’s an overwhelming number to try and satisfy everybody, but trying to be a financially strong organization, we just can’t let that fail and slip by. Anything else you would like to share about the community? Calvin is a man who creates partnerships, he’s not dictating “this is how it happens,” but rather “here’s how I would like to work with you to help it happen.” I look at the same thing. I have a board of people who are working with me, not for me. So being board president just means I’m working with them. I help make an agenda for meetings, I help direct the meetings, and I realize they have confidence in me. It just comes down to that we’re just passing through time, but we have a job to do, and that’s to try to support this community the way they want.

One of the keys to Schneider House’s success is the relationships that the owners, Tim and Tammy Schneider, and their staff have built with customers through the years. “We’ve made really good relationships,” Tim said. “We’ve made a lot of really good friends, not just customers. People from Lake Carroll will come in and buy furniture for their lake home, and the next thing you know they’re buying furniture for their home in Chicago or wherever.” The only furniture store in Carroll County, it’s been in the Schneiders’ hands since 1993, and they’ve built up quite a reputation since then. The key to their success? Relationships. “We’ve made really good relationships,” Tim said. “We’ve made a lot of really good friends, not just customers. People from Lake Carroll will come in and buy furniture for their lake home, and the next thing you know they’re buying furniture for their home in Chicago or wherever.” While a lot of furniture stores can be found between here and Chicago, Tim’s proud of the fact that customers still pick his family to serve their families.

“We’ve made a lot of trips to Chicago,” Tim said, “and I always think about it when we go, how many furniture stores I drive by to get to their house.” While service is a big part of the business’ success, so too is selection. Schneider House’s legacy goes back more than 125 years to the Frank family and their furniture and funeral home business in Chadwick, a few miles southeast of Mount Carroll. While furniture and funerals may not seem like a natural fit, at the time furniture shops made their own custom furniture, and their expertise led to making caskets, too, which lead to stores expanding their business to services and undertaking. Tim joined the Franks in 1979 after working at National Manufacturing in Sterling. At first, he worked with flooring, deliveries, and even helped with the funeral home, until it was sold and moved out in 1988. A few years after that, the Franks decided to sell the 101-year-old family business. It didn’t take long for Tim to hear opportunity knocking. “Out of the blue one day, we’re sitting in the back room having coffee, and they said they were going to retire and are going to sell the business,” Tim said. “Me and another guy who was working here had the first opportunity to buy it, and it went real fast.” The past 28 years have been a blessing for the Schneiders, who have kept their family furniture store going even as the retail landscape continues to change. But online sales and big-box stores can’t match the small-town charm and service found in stores like the Schneiders’. “A lot of people like that we’re a family-owned business,” Tammy said. “We want people to be happy.”

eid Law didn’t have to go far to find his rhythm. It was right there in his backyard. That’s where his grassroots movement took root and a premier entertainment venue grew out of it, in a place some people might call the “middle of nowhere.” But that “nowhere” has become somewhere pretty special: an outdoor amphitheater in the rolling hills of Carroll County that hasn’t been around that long but which is already attracting some pretty big names in the world of music. Rhythm Section Amphitheater, located about a mile north of Mount Carroll at 13137 state Route 78, has been a labor of love for Law, who had some land on his hands, and time, and put them both to good use, creating an outdoor performance venue that’s putting Carroll County on the map.

Of course, he has a crack crew to help with lighting, but even they can’t create the kind of light show that nature has created. A highlight of each performance is the moment when all of the venue’s lights go dark, with fair warning, for about 10 minutes – either before a performance or during one – letting concertgoers, and performers, immerse themselves in the serene solitude and beauty of the night sky’s natural lighting. “We want everyone to look up and see the stars, because a lot of people who live in cities don’t ever see them,” Law said. “That’s been a huge hit. That’s been kind of like our mainstay now, and people ask when we’re going to do the blackout.

There’s billions of stars out here.” The stars are both above and below — in the sky and on the stage — whether it’s local bands who hope to hit it big or acts who’ve already hit it big. When it comes to the big names, it’s been a learning curve — the bigger the act, the more paperwork – but Law and his staff are learning more with each act. “When it comes to music and artists and management, and all of these things, it seems like it should be simple on the outside, but it becomes very convoluted inside,” Law said. “There’s all these people and there’s layers. It takes a lot of time. You learn to be patient. You don’t want to rush. And they have to have confidence in us.”

Law has plenty of experience hosting events, but he’s used to handling motorcycles more than music at his MC Motopark, which hosts national events and has drawn performers from around the world. A former racer himself, he opened his park in 2001 to keep his love for the sport going. After more than a decade of success with the track, he wondered if he could replicate that kind of success with bands instead of bikes. So far, he’s on the right track. He’s booking big names and business has been good. But it takes more than a stage and seating for the full concert experience. Law added a bar and concession areas at the top of the hill, and in keeping with the lay of the land, the bar and green room (where acts wait to go on stage) are housed in repurposed silos. There’s also a hog shed that was renovated to become the Heritage Pub, which is hard to miss with the castle-like portcullis gate in the front. The pub’s interior was inspired by the look of one of Law’s popular Florida destinations, the Celtic Ray in Punta Gorda, Florida, and the wood beams that hold it up come from old railroad bridges in the area.

The silos and shed came from Carroll County, as did most of the pub’s farm decor. The shed has an upper level that provides a vantage point where people can still see the stage; the steps leading up to it also are pieces of local history – they are made from the planks that used to be on the historic Galena Street Bridge, the iron bridge over the Carroll Creek in Mount Carroll, which now carries pedestrians on a new surface. Barnwood that makes up the top of the stage comes from a farm north of Shannon. For those who want to make a night of it, camping is available onsite. As for the the venue’s name, it’s music to Law’s ears in more ways than one. Rhythm sections aren’t just a part of a band; they’re also a small set of jumps on motocross tracks that help riders get into a rhythm on the course. “The Rhythm Section was something that just, over time, I wanted to start doing,” Law said. “I had two criteria: excellent sound and excellent viewing. This particular part of the property we really didn’t utilize that much, so I just got things in my head and started building.” The area still is a work in progress, and he has plans to reutilize the former Long Hollow Scenic Overlook Tower once more. The wood tower once sat at a rest area on U.S. Route 20 west of Elizabeth until it closed nearly 15 years ago. “We want to bring in unique things,” Law said. “There’s a lot of unique oddities within the buildings. It’ll give people something to look at, too.” Law is already working on next year’s lineup, and he’s hoping to build on this year’s success to make 2022 even bigger and better than this year. “I think it’s going to be an amazing season,” Law said. “The people we have coming here are phenomenal. These are higher level artists that are going to be showing up to the middle of nowhere.”

Just take a look at the magazine you’re holding in your hand. It’s the 15th issue of a publication launched in April 2020 with the promise, in a column launching the magazine, “to introduce its readers to regional entertainment venues and recreational opportunities, to highlight local hot spots, to thank those quietly living lives of service, and to celebrate the bonds that define this small but vibrant community.” Over the past nearly year and a half, we’ve had the pleasure of bringing you more than 100 articles and photos that celebrate the lake’s lifestyle and the people who live it — stories about businesses, events, venues, restaurants, lake residents and staff, history, day trips — everything that makes Lake Carroll a special place for the people who live there, whether they call it home, or a home away from home. It’s people who make this magazine possible, and it’s people we enjoy celebrating, whether they own a business, are part of a social club, plan an event, or have an interesting story to tell. As new Lake Carroll Board President Steven Mack says in a Q&A elsewhere in this is issue, “This community is so open. You can come in the Clubhouse, and as soon as you meet 10 people, you’re going to meet 50 people if you want.” Our role at Lake Lifestyle is to help you meet some of those people, and share what makes their community special. Lake Carroll boasts a population of a small city, and each of those people has a story to tell.

But just because the lake is billed as “northwest Illinois’ best-kept secret” doesn’t mean we want to keep its stories a secret. That’s where you come in. Involved in a club at the lake? Iowa and Wisconsin are less than 50 miles from Lake Carroll, and Dubuque, Galena, Rockford, the Quad Cities and the Sterling-Rock Falls-Dixon area are all within an hour’s drive from the community.
