When Fred Reddies peered into the future, he saw a place at Lake Carroll where everyone – whether they were walking or were on wheels – could drop a line and pass the time. Now, thanks to friends and neighbors who helped tackle the project, that vision has become a reality By Cody Cutter | For Lake Lifestyle

red Reddies has traveled all over North America, catching the ones that didn’t get away and setting his sights on wild game. The 63-year-old Savanna native has reeled in 6-foot tarpons and sailfish from the Florida coast, and on the other end of the continent took down a caribou mere miles from the Arctic Circle. In recent months though, he’s had bigger fish to fry: getting a handicapped accessible pier installed at Lake Carroll, where he’s lived since 2012. It’s a project that’s near and dear to his heart. On May 3, 2018, Reddies suffered a stroke that left most of the left side of his body paralyzed and put him into a motorized chair. It was a setback that almost forced him to put away the “Gone Fishin’” sign for good, when he couldn’t find a safe place to fish at the lake.

But Reddies turned that setback into an opportunity. The lake’s former fish hatchery manager floated the idea of building a safe and user-friendly place for people like him to fish. With help from his friends, neighbors, and the Lake Carroll Fishing Club, the new pier at the east marina has rolled out the welcome ramp, making it easier and safer for Reddies and others to fish. Now, they can head up the ramp to a pier with rails and cast their lines. “This is a great community,” Reddies said. “We watch over our neighbors, and our neighbors watch over us.”

And all it took was some gentle pier pressure from Reddies. Not wanting to just sit at home, feeling like his fishing days were over, Reddies pitched the idea to the Lake Carroll Fishing Club in September 2018, and club secretary Michael Bykowski took the bait. When he read Reddies’ e-mail, it got him fired up about the plan to make Lake Carroll more fisher friendly for everyone. He wanted to help his friend find a way to get back to fishing again. Just a couple of days before Reddies’ stroke, he and Bykowski had gone on a catfishing trip along the Yellow Creek east of Freeport.

“He said what Lake Carroll needs is a handicapped accessible fishing pier,” Bykowski said. “It was Fred’s email, and it was just that simple, just a couple of sentences, but it started the thought process of something we really need out here.” Bykowski and the Fishing Club set out almost immediately to raise money for the pier. The club contributed more than half of its $16,268.64 price tag through dues money, and reeled in another $7,680 in donations. Another member of the Lake Carroll community had

a hand in the plan, too. Steve Nilles of Goettsch Partners, whose firm has designed several large office buildings throughout the world, drew up the design for the pier. With plans in hand, Lou Baier of LTB Construction built the pier, with help from Lake Carroll facilities manager Don Aleksy. Others pitched in, too, and nearly all of them did the work pro bono. “Everybody works together out here,” Reddies said. “It’s teamwork.”

It took about 4 months to finish the project, and when it was done, Reddies was eager to grab his gear and head to the pier, but first he had to get a pair of scissors. He was the guest of honor at a ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 23, and snipped the streamer to officially open the pier. Though he’s racked up his fair share of impressive catches, the pier project holds a particular place of pride for Reddies, knowing that he played a part in a project that will benefit the whole community. “We want to have it out here for everybody,” he said. “This is all-year, for everyone.” His wife, Julie, is happy to see her husband’s more hopeful outlook, and she’s impressed with how the community came together to create opportunities for disabled folks to engage in activities at the lake. The community also recently added a lift to the indoor pool, for those with disabilities.

It’s got a lot of bluegills in there, and they’re ready to bite. It’s where I would take my grandchildren.”

From postmaster to president, from committees to a county board, she’s done a lot for the places she calls home. “As long as you’re able, it’s good for you to give back,” Anderson said. “If you give back, if you’re able to give back, you get more out of it. When Barbara Anderson tells people how great it is to be involved in their community, she knows what she’s talking about. She’s been living up to her own words for more than 40 years: The more you put into life, the more you get out of it 10

If folks at Lake Carroll have a question or concern about matters in Carroll County, they don’t need to go far to find someone to lend an ear or lend a hand. They can just call one of their neighbors. Barbara Anderson was elected to the Carroll County Board in 2018. She represents not only the Lake Carroll community she calls home, but the eastern third of the county as well. While she strives to make sure all her constituents are heard, she’s especially proud of the fact that Lake Carroll has a voice in county matters. “I love Lake Carroll. I think it’s a great community,” Anderson said. “My passion is to look out for the interests of Lake Carroll.” And does she ever: When she’s not concentrating on her county board work, Anderson also is the secretary of Lake Carroll’s bylaws committee, treasurer of its Ski Club, serves on the recreation committee and is a member of the fishing, prairie and women’s clubs at Lake Carroll. All of that involvement comes after her service on the Lake Carroll Board as secretary and then a term as its president in 2015.

Roughly two-thirds of Lake Carroll sits in the county’s first district, which includes Savanna, Washington, Woodland and Freedom townships along the northern and western edge. Anderson lives on the east side of Lake Carroll, which sits in Cherry Grove Township in the county’s third district, which also includes Shannon, Rock Creek, Lima, Wysox and Elkhorn Grove townships – including the communities of Lanark, Shannon and Milledgeville. Also serving with Anderson in her district are Joseph Payette of Shannon and Keith Vandermyde of Lanark. While third-district voters are the ones who put her in office,it’s the interests of the whole community that are front and center when she’s making decisions about county matters. “I’m pleased that we are able to keep the taxes down in our county, and with all of the building going on at Lake Carroll, that’s helped,” Anderson said. “We’re trying to do the best we can to keep taxes low, and to provide services to the people of our county.”

All of that involvement also comes at a time in her life when many people her age are enjoying a leisurely retirement. That should come as no surprise for anyone who knows Anderson. The 82-yearold’s passion for helping her community hasn’t let up after more than 40 years, much of that time spent in leadership positions. “Most people don’t believe I’m that old,” she said. SHE SERVED AS POSTMASTER FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS in her former hometown of Seneca until she retired from the post in 1998. She also raised three children with her first husband, Iver Anderson, and was involved in several parent-teacher committees as they grew up, serving as president on one occasion. When Iver died in 1986, Barbara began to honor his memory by becoming more involved in community functions and taking on leadership roles. She served as president of the Illinois Chapter of United Postmasters and Managers of America, and president of the retiree organization of the chapter. “As long as you’re able, it’s good for you to give back,” Anderson said. “If you give back, if you’re able to give back, you get more out of it. You really do.” After serving on the LaSalle County Parks and Recreation board, among other organizations, Anderson and her second husband, Dennis Ganz, made the move from Seneca, about 30 miles west of Joliet, to the opposite side of northern Illinois, settling in Lake Carroll in 2007.

ANDERSON HAS ALSO SERVED AS THE BOARD’S LIAISON TO THE COUNTY’S 911 COMMITTEE, but starting this year she’ll switch to serving in a similar role with the county’s Motel and Tourism Committee, bringing her decades of experience in public service to yet another role. “I thought it would be interesting to do a different job,” Anderson said. “When I was on the board for Lake Carroll, I was liaison for all sorts of different committees because I wanted to get my fingers in other things and see what’s going on all around. This is why I’m changing here, to get more of a view on what’s going on in the county.” Seeing what’s going on in the county is something Anderson is doing well, even though the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t made it easy. For a couple months, Carroll County ranked among the top 10 for counties with the highest positivity rates in the state. Like others around the world, she’s had to learn how to adapt to changing and uncertain times. The pandemic switched up how county operations are run, and these days the county board meets via the Zoom for its twice-monthly meetings.

WHEN SHE MOVED, ANDERSON DIDN’T LEAVE HER PENCHANT FOR LEADERSHIP AND PASSION FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT BEHIND. She brought it with her, joining, and rising through the ranks, of the Lake Carroll leadership team. It wasn’t long before others took notice, and when there was an open spot on the county board a couple of years ago, board member and county Democratic party president Ron Preston urged Anderson to seek the seat to which she eventually became elected. Anderson doesn’t identify herself with a certain political party, and thus is a nonpartisan member. “I agreed because I thought I could look out for the interests of Lake Carroll,” Anderson said.

Despite those changes and challenges, Anderson said she’s rolling with the pandemic’s punches. “It’s tough because we can’t associate, and all of our meetings have to be on Zoom anymore,” she said. “You can’t interact, but we’re doing the best we can. e all know that cheese comes from cows, meat comes from livestock, and wine comes from fruits. But where does all that food get its start? At Barrel and Brie – in the small community of Eleroy, about 10 minutes northeast of Lake Carroll – all you have to do is look at the labels to find out. Lena couple Scott Wanek and Kim Confer offer up a “who’s who” of regional cheese makers within 75 miles of Lake Carroll in their freezers and coolers. Shullsburg, Decatur, Springbrook, Brunkow – you name it, it’s there. That’s the way Barrel and Brie’s team prefers it, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people want to know where their food comes from, Confer said.

Barrell and Brie owners Kim Confer and Scott Wanek opened their shop this summer, and already it’s become a favorite stop for local customers, and those just passing through. “Talking to customers and talking about our product, it’s not like shopping in a grocery store aisle,” Confer said. “We like making relationships, and now we have customers who come weekly from around here that I wouldn’t have met if it were not for this setting. As for some of the meat sold there: “You can’t get Scott Wanek’s beef anywhere else but here,” Confer said. “A lot of people want to know where their food is coming from, more now than before,” she added. “I knew that was on the rise last year, and now it’s actually been good having people know where their food is from. They’ll ask where we get our meat from and where we get our eggs from, and I can tell them the beef is from just down the road.” The store opened June 15 – smack dab in the middle of the pandemic – but business has been good so far, despite the challenges. Wanek and Confer bought the building in June 2019 and took nearly a year to redesign and renovate it, as well as link up with the many regional cheese companies and vineyards to have their products on their shelves. They’ve come to know many of those vendors on a first-name basis, which goes a long way toward build-

ing trust and a good working relationship. When it comes to the meat, Wanek knows one of his suppliers pretty well: It comes from his farm. Ribeyes, ground beef, pork chops, roasts, ham steaks, chicken – it’s all from local livestock. The proof is in the labels, some of which read: “Picked by Scott Wanek.” The store has been an idea that Wanek has toyed with for the past 10 to 15 years, while driving his own truck, hauling cheese all over the Midwest. “I drive a truck, and every time I see a cheese or meat store, I’m always stopping and taking some mental notes,” he said. Among Barrel and Brie’s most popular cheeses are Shullsburg (located 45 miles from Lake Carroll) and Decatur Dairy, from Brodhead (55 miles away), which offers a variety of different cheese blends such as green olive cheese curds.

Barrel and Brie has a wide selection of regional cheeses – Shullsburg, Decatur, Springbrook, Brunkow, and more – along with locally sourced fresh meat, including some from co-owner Scott Wanek’s (seen in the photos below) farm. “You can’t get Scott Wanek’s beef anywhere else but here,” co-owner Kim Confer said. The shop also carries the fruits of local winemakers’ labor, including Massbach Ridge Winery in Elizabeth, as well as canned goods – beans, beets, Brussels sprouts and more,

“A lot of people know we get those fresh on Fridays and they’ll come in for the cheese curds,” Confer said. Just a few miles down the road from Barrel and Brie, in Lena, are Savencia Cheese, which makes brie, and Torkelson Cheese. Other regional offerings include Springbrook Cheese from Davis, Illinois (40 miles away), which is known for making Swiss cheese; Brunkow Cheese in Darlington, Wisconsin (50 miles); Deppeler’s in Monroe, Wisconsin (40 miles); Forgotten Valley in South Wayne, Wisconsin (35 miles) and Country Castle Limburger cheese, also from Monroe – it’s the only place in the United States that makes Limburger cheese, popular in Germany. Country Castle even has a smoked variety of the pungent product, which customers can find tucked away Barrel and Brie’s cooler.

The store’s many varieties of wine come from places such as Massbach Ridge in Elizabeth, Famous Fossil in Freeport, and Hawk’s Mill in Browntown, Wisconsin. Twas the season for Christmas, too, when the shop brought in some metal Christmas ornaments and wall art, courtesy of Countryside Powder Coating & Metal Art in Freeport, and fresh-cut Christmas trees from Fennimore, Wisc. “We’re trying to keep everything as local as possible,” Confer said. “It’s good advertising for those small businesses, too. It’s been really great for all of the small businesses that are having their products here.” There’s also maple syrup from Hilltop Sugar Bush in Plain, Wisconsin; Jack & Co. elderberry syrup from Pecatonica; and vanilla extract from Furst-McNess in Freeport. The vanilla was a popular product in years past, and recently made a comeback in smaller shops. It’s proven popular at Barrel and Brie. Confer ordered 24 bottles and all but two were gone in less than a week. “Everybody remembers it from this area,” Confer said. “It’s an oldie that people haven’t been able to find for a long time.” The store also will whip up some eats to go, offering grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese curds daily. On Friday through Sunday, Wanek gets out

his smoker and works with brisket and pulled pork to concoct specials to go along with the cheeses. “We do it the old-fashioned way,” Wanek said. “Every couple of hours all night long we’re putting wood on the smoker, so it’s not like the restaurant style. “You get more flavor out of it with the different kinds of wood. It’s a lot of work, but people love it.” Special occasions, such as the Smoked Days, help Barrel and Brie’s staff of 10 get to know their customers, some of whom come from nearby and others from far away. Sitting off of U.S. Route 20 – the longest highway in the nation – also helps attract customers from different walks of life. In this month’s Lake Carroll Employee Spotlight, we visit with Lemm, who first worked as a front desk representative in 2017 before taking about a year off, returning to her role this past summer. Judging by the comments on a recent post spotlighting her on the Lake Carroll Facebook page, residents were happy to have her back, describing Lemm as “awesome,” “always smiling,” and“a wonderful lady.” Lemm, 55, is originally from Minnesota and moved to Thomson in 1996. She’s lived in Lake Carroll since 2013. She and husband James have four grown children and 13 grandchildren. In her free time, she likes to cross stitch, play piano, and bowl – “less than an average game,” she’s quick to admit. nnn

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB? We’re all just one big family here. I left for a little while, and I really missed the members and missed the people I work with. It’s quite a different atmosphere than working in any other office I’ve ever been in; we care about one another, we’re more than co-workers, we’re friends. There’s a camaraderie here. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE THAT YOU WANTED TO COME BACK? I was asked to come back. They asked me at the end of July and it was a no-brainer. People have been so welcoming to me coming back. They’re very kind to me here.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND ENJOY ABOUT THE WORK

YOU DO? I like being around people. When I was gone, I worked at a customer service job, and then that became remote because of Covid. I am a social being, I cannot be isolated. It is very tough when you were used to working with people. I’ve worked in retail and cosmetics, and so I’ve always enjoyed working with the public. You hear a lot of very interesting stories from a lot of people. WHAT ARE YOUR CHIEF RESPONSIBILITIES? We answer all of the phone calls and direct them. We answer any inquiries that our members and any prospective members have. We have the information regarding the actual statistics at the lake, and what your membership includes. We issue all of the membership decals. We accept dues payments, and do general office management. DO THINGS GET STRESSFUL, OR IS IT PRETTY MUCH EASY GOING? We have ebbs and flows. We finished [in December] with our annual voting to approve the budget, and we had an election to vote in two new board members. Those are busy times of the year. After the main season, which ends in Labor Day, usually, we have a little bit of a lull. Then we get going on the election, the budget, and things like that. This month, we have to mail out all of the new billing for the year: your dues, what you owe for decals, verifying your information, and then it starts – people will start coming in busloads. Those points get kind of hectic, you just got to keep your cool, ask for the next person in line, and just do your duties.

TAKE US THROUGH A TYPICAL RECENT DAY FROM START TO FINISH. The office opens at 8 a.m., and we’re actually the ones to unlock the doors and turn on the lights. We then answer the voicemails, typical office duties, and respond to any of the emails we receive from the prior evening. Then we work with getting letters drafted to go out with our annual mailings, since we also mail out marina slips if you’re going to use it for the next year, campground slips if you’re going to use it for the next year or put someone else in those areas. We are the first point of contact for any new owners that come out here. Once they close on their house, they come to the office and we will get them registered in the system, give them their ID cards, their amenity ID cards, and explain a little bit to them about Lake Carroll – we’re a four-season community – and what the amenities include. We give them our information so they can call us, and we get a lot of calls. Simple things, like, “Who picks up our garbage?” “How tall should our mailbox be?” Little things that you wouldn’t think of until you’re in the house.

Sturtevant Feedlots, east of Lake Carroll on Pane Road, recently celebrated its bicentennial anniversary. The farm, run by three generations of Sturtevants – Ron, Steve, Scott and Trey – was first tended to by Ron’s great-great-grandfather, William Boardman, in 1820.

The Slurp N’ Burp bar is the only bustling business in Loran, just a few miles northwest of Lake Carroll.

The Carroll County Courthouse in Mount Carroll has two Civil War monuments. An annex had to be constructed to honor the soldiers whose names couldn’t be etched into the original granite monument. Hide-A-Way Park, 8701 West Block Road, east of Pearl City, has playground areas and hiking trails, as well as access to the Yellow Creek.

The old water tower in Shannon was built in 1892 and stands 82 feet tall, but it was taller when the tank at top was still in place. The tower stored water for more than 100 years before a new one was built in 1997.

Willow Creek Farm, built in 1855 on Spring Valley Road, east of Lake Carroll, is said to be haunted. Its spooky story has made it a tourist attraction for ghost story seekers. Find Haunted Willow Creek Farm on Facebook for more information.

The Galena Street Bridge over the Carroll Creek in Mount Carroll was built in the late 19th century. Today, the nearly 100-foot long bridge is used for pedestrian traffic. A newer bridge was built next to it a few years ago.

This Lanark building, built by R. Lucke in 1886 at 104 N.
